Optimal Design and Implementation of

Coordinated Control of STATCOM and PSS for

a Multimachine Power System
AbstractNowadays Power System has become a very complex network because of large number of
interconnections. And with the large number of interconnection there are also some weak tie line.
Due to line outages and heavy system loads weak ties can lead to poorly damped intertie modes.
Power System work at close to its limit therefore in synchronous generator the damping that the
field and damper windings provide to the rotor oscillations is weakened due to excitation control
system action. Excitation systems with high gain and fast response time greatly aid transient
stability (synchronizing torque), but can also reduce small signal stability (damping torque).
PSS control provides a positive contribution by damping generator rotor angle swings,
which are in a broad range of frequencies in the power system. These range from low frequency
intertie modes to intra plant modes. These modes are present in all interconnected systems and
the damping is a function of tie line strength and unit loading factors. STATCOM is also used for
the power oscillation damping and with proper coordination, these controllers can damp out inter
area oscillations too. Proper coordination can be done by using some optimization techniques.
