Qaswa / Kaswah Camel
We all know that everything about the life of our Beloved Rasulullah SallAllahu alaihi
wasallam was perfectionsowing seeds of such love and devotion in heartsreading that
he SallAllahu alaihi wasallam gave names to his blessed animals touches yet another chord
of love and deep affectionrevealing the extent of his love and respect for all of creation
teaching us to acknowledge all Allah Taala has provided for usnothing is to be taken for
grantedone can only allow the imagination to take flight and listen to how he SallAllahu
alaihi wasallam would be speaking to his beloved animals, SubhanAllaha tingly tenderness
washes over one
Riding beasts.
He has ten horses, although there is some disagreement [among scholars] regarding that,
and they were:
1. al-Sakb: (which means the one that runs a lot) He was on it on the Day of Uhud, and it
was covered with white patches with the exception of its right leg;
2. al-Murtajiz: (it was named that because it had a pleasant neigh) it is the one regarding
whom Khuzaymah ibn Thabit testified (when the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam bought
it from Sawa ibn al-Harith, who later denied selling it to him);
3. al-Lizaz: (it was named that because of its flesh tightly joined and pressed. From the
verb lazza, which means to be connected or joined firmly) which was gift from al-Muqawqis;
4. al-Lahif: (it was named because it was big and fat) which Rabiah ibn Abi al-Bara gave
him as a gift;
5. al-Zarib: (it was named because of its firmness and solidity) which was given to him as a
gift by Farwah al-Judhami;
6. al-Ward: which was given to him as a gift by Tamim al-Dari;
7. al-Mirwah: (from the word rih, wind, because of its speed)
8. Sabbah (a horse is called sabih if it is good at stretching its legs when running)
9. Al-Bahr: which he bought from some Yemeni traders. He won a race on it three times, so
he wiped over its face and said: You are nothing but an ocean, bahr
10. al-Mandub;
11. al-Najib;
12. al-Yasub;
13. and al-Sirhan

He had the mule which al-Muqawqis gave to him as a gift. It was the first mule to be ridden
in Islam; it is the one that was called Duldul. it lived after him SallAllahu alaihi wassalam
until it became old and lost its molars, and so the Companions would treat it kindly and
grind barley for it to eat; it was grey in colour. he also had al-Ayliyyah, which was given to
him as a gift from the King of Aylah (an ancient city located at the centre of Aqaba, Jordans
port which lies in the north eastern corner of the Gulf of Arabia, an extension of the Red
Sea) and another one from Dumah al-Jandal. He had another mare called Fiddah [silver],
which was given to him as a gift from Farwah al-Judhami; it was white, and it was the one
he rode on the Day of Hunayn; he later gave it away to Abu Bakr RadhiAllahu anhu as a
gift. He SallAllahu alaihi wassalam had two donkeys called Ufayr and Yafur. It has not been
transmitted that he kept cattle.
Milch camels and goats
He had twenty milch camels, and they are the ones that were attacked in al-Ghabah and
the ones the family of the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wassalam used to live off. He had
distributed them over his wives; every night, two large water skins filled with their milk
would be brought to him [as supper for him and his family]. They are the following:
1. al-Hinna;
2. al-Samra;
3. al-Urayyis;
4. al-Sadiyyah;
5. al-Bughum;
6. al-Yasirah;
7. al-Dubba;
8. al-Shaqra;
9. and Burda
As for his goats, then they were seven:
1. Ajrah;
2. Zamzam;
3. Suqya;
4. Barakah;
5. Warshah;
6. Atlal;

7. and Atraf.
Umm Ayman RadhiAllahu anha would herd them in Uhud and bring the milk to the house in
which the Messenger of Allah SallAllahu alaihi Wasallam was scheduled to spend the night.
source: Muhammad SallAllahu alaihi wasallam The Best of Creation Sayyid Muhammad ibn
Alawi al-Maliki al Hasani RahmatuLlahi alaihithis is an invaluable book to have. Not only
researched and written by this illustrious scholar but the information he is sharing contains
a comprehensive summary of some of the most authoritative and voluminous works written
on the Prophetic biography. The first part deals with various aspects of the Prophet
SallAllahu alaihi wasallams life, such as his early years before receiving revelation,
members of his family, signs of his propehthood, the weapons he used in battle (including
the names he gave them), the clothes he wore and so forth. The second part is a
chronological summary of the most important events to have taken place in his SallAllahu
alaihi wasallam life. Quoted from the back cover of the book.
interesting that Sayyid Muhammad ibn Alawi al-Maliki al Hasani RahmatuLlahi
alaihi does not mention Qaswa the mubarak camel that featured prominently
in the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallams lifethe dear camel that went blind
due to profuse crying after the demise of his masterthe Sahabah RadhiAllahu
anhum tied a blindfold over his eyesQaswa refused to eatand not long after
