The idea of using a criminal interrogation for the

preliminary task is similar to what I did in GCSE,


however, whereas that was done in a classroom
with little use of costumes, here we wanted to
make the short film appear to have a bit more
effort with the short amount of supplies
available. Due to each of us living too far apart
we decided to use a school office and the studio
which would be our Police office and our living
room for the task.
We went through an idea involving a divorce but
since we didnt really want to go through with
this idea we decided to change topic to a police interrogation. Storyboards were drawn up
and each of us had a similar idea of what to do.
The first scene would involve Jessica Richards as
the police woman feeling bored, she would tap her
fingers and swing on her chair etc. During editing I
removed most of this as I felt like it was pointless
padding so instead I kept the typing scene and
included Jessica picking up the phone as it was
necessary for the short story. Through a series of
cuts and changes
of camera angles
such as close up of Jessica picking up the police hat and
mid shot of her leaving the room, I made attempted to make
a whole transition occur as if it were one long shot with
different cameras taking the different angle, this being a
match on action shot. The problem with this segment os
that the cuts seem too aggressive and not fluid and in terms
of continuity some shots show Jessica put a hat on with two
hands and no notepad to having a notepad all of a sudden in one hand. Lighting in the area
was very bright and came across as almost
blinding.
Our next segment is the door opening and
walking inside the murderers home. As a part
of the task we needed someone opening a
door and sitting down opposite to another.
We did the door scene and did it in the same
room as the living room to make the
transition clearer. Problem here was that the
background behind Jessica when she opens
the door is clearly indoors as opposed to being outdoors Jessica walks across the room in
a POV shot, where it establishes the events that have unfolded. I added uncopyright music
to make the scene intense and cut the music when I speak. Despite efforts to increase the
volume of the video to make me sound louder, the sound is all off and its hard to understand

what I was saying. Through the window an easy mistake is noted with the classrooms
outside, decreasing the realistic setting we
attempted.
Now onto the interrogation. We filmed plenty
of different shots for this task, however, as it
turns out there were some problems. Due to
filming in
different
periods
and
different days some shots we filmed had lights on, and
some with light off, this meant when it came to editing
we had to decrease the brightness of the lights and
fiddle with the colour setting, which was a murky, warm
orange colour. To add to this we had problems with a
180-degree rule shot as if we did some of the studio
items such as cameras, TVs and boards (which we did
clear away from the filming zone in advance but due to
space it was hard to move everything about.) getting in
the way. That said we used different shots and editing
techniques of the two characters talking to one another,
such as over the shoulder shots, shot reverse shots and close ups. These are done every
time one of the characters starts talking. We end the video off with a panning shot,
interestingly the lighting becomes is blinding at first but becomes darker as the camera pans
onto the dead body.
If I were to do this again I would try and get a 180-degree rule involved. A problem with the
video sound throughout this video is that dialogue is extremely quiet while a loud buzz
sound dominates the scene and if I knew how to get rid of it I would do so to make dialogue
louder and clearer, one way is to have a close up on the characters allowing for the sound to
be clearer.
