EXCELLENCE IN
MARINE MATERIALS
Copper nickel has enhanced strength and corrosion resistance while maintaining a high inherent resistance to biofouling. The 90/10 copper nickel alloy
is the most commonly used wrought copper alloy for marine engineering and can be found in seawater systems for naval, commercial, shipping,
offshore oil & gas, multi-stage flash desalination and aquaculture. Alloys with higher nickel content, and those which are more highly alloyed with
chromium, aluminium and tin are used where greater resistance to flow conditions, sand abrasion, wear and galling are required, as well as higher
mechanical properties or castability.
While the more economical 90/10 copper nickel alloy is the most widely used, the 70/30 copper nickel alloy is stronger. Iron and manganese levels are
important in optimising the corrosion resistance of both alloys.
TUBE
NES/DEFSTAN CuproRight 70 & CuproRight 90
CuproRight 70 and CuproRight 90 are exclusively available from Righton and conform to Naval Engineering Standards (NES). NES may require specific
testing procedures to include hydrostatic and ultrasonic testing together with more general criteria such as dimensional tolerances.
Copper Nickel 90/10 NES/DEFSTAN 02-779
90/10 has excellent corrosion resistance in reasonably clean, flowing sea water (from 1 to approx 3.5 m/s), with good resistance to stress corrosion
cracking. It has good cold and hot working properties and is readily weldable.
Copper Nickel 70/30 NES/DEFSTAN 02-780
70/30 is stronger than 90/10 but slightly less resistant to biofouling. It has excellent corrosion resistance in flowing polluted sea water (from 1 to
4.5 m/s) and has excellent resistance to impingement attack and stress corrosion cracking. 70/30 retains its strength at moderately elevated
temperatures, has good cold and hot working properties and is readily weldable.
90/10 and 70/30 can be used in a variety of applications including: Seawater cooling systems, centralised cooling systems, scoop intake systems, bilge
and ballast systems, sanitary systems, fire fighting systems, inert gas systems, deck steam pipes, feed lines to desalination plant, cargo heating coils,
hydraulic and pneumatic systems, heat exchanger condensers, preheaters and evaporators, sheathing of offshore platform legs and cross-members.
Copper C106
This is produced from deoxidised non-arsenical copper and therefore does not encounter any embrittlement. It can be used in general engineering
applications where the highest conductivity is not required.

Vessels constructed from aluminium can stay in service for several decades without sustaining any measurable corrosion. Aluminium has a low weight
factor and requires little maintenance. Products in aluminium can be easily fabricated and have a good post weld yield strength and fatigue resistance.
Aluminium can be used in a variety of applications including hull and deck structures for fast ferries and workboats, trim for pleasureboats, ladders,
hatches, portholes & bulkheads.

TRIPLATE
Triplate is a transition joint that is homogeneously bonded together by vacuum-explosion welding and is often used in shipbuilding for welding an
aluminium superstructure to a steel hull. Triplate consists of three metals with a steel base material, a corrosion resistant aluminium alloy as the
upper layer and, to promote bonding, pure aluminium as the intermediate layer. The explosive cladding/welding process produces a perfect
metallurgical bond which is stronger, more secure and more durable than traditional rivets & welding. Due to its superior bend radii and flexibility
more complex profiles can be produced with Triplate.

Atmospheric vs Vacuum Cladding
Although atmospheric cladding is an effective process, far superior results are achieved if the explosive bonding process is carried out under vacuum.
Apart from being a much quieter process, its greatest advantage is that it is not necessary to remove any air from the advancing, explosive bonding jet.
This allows less violent explosives to be used for bonding which in turn produces a smoother wave bond between the aluminium and steel. The ductile
aluminium steel joint also aids easy sawing and forming.
Atmospheric
Vacuum
Oxide agglomerations & porosity can cause corrosion, in spite of protective coatings.
Bending of aluminium-steel strips can be difficult due to the coarser bond structure.

Polycarbonate
Polycarbonate sheet offers a superior glazing solution to that of other materials, particularly when safety or impact resistance is of vital importance.
It can be used in a variety of applications which require its high performance features, including safety glazing, protective screening and fabrication for
interior and exterior uses. At only half the weight of glass, polycarbonate has an impact strength 200 times greater. It has light transmissions of up to
90% and has excellent resistance to weather and atmospheric conditions. It also offers good fire performance, up to Class 1 surface spread of flame
and it can be easily cold curved on site.

SHEET
PVC Foam
A lightweight sheet suitable for interior and exterior use that has an ideal combination of strength and durability. Its hard gloss finish ensures good
resistance to knocks and scratches. PVC foam offers good fire performance up to Class 1 surface spread of flame (in accordance with BS476 Part 7).
The material can be thermoformed and excellent results are achieved when it is bent, cut, welded, glued or drilled.
Integral skin foam sheet is made of rigid PVC with a sandwich like structure. Manufactured in one single operation, it consists of two solid layers and a
cellular one both of the same material. It has a firm smooth skin with a silk gloss finish. It can be used for all applications where resistance to humidity,
weathering and aggressive substances is required. The sheets conduct very little heat and thus provide excellent thermal insulation. The material
offers good flexural strength combined with low relative density.

SHEET
UV Stabilised Polyethylene
This material is excellently suited for the fabrication of all sorts of components on board boats. It has excellent corrosion resistance and is completely
resistant to sunlight and water. Fabrication is achieved with common woodworking machinery and tools and the flat surfaces and edges need no further
finishing, just sawing, planing and milling. The sheets cannot warp and they are ideal for parts which are exposed to harsh marine conditions and/or to
heat (up to 95oC). It can be easily cleaned and with a durable finish, it is a solid, non-laminated material which will never be subject to delamination.
In view of the fact that the sheets need not be sanded, veneered or painted, the saving in labour cost will prove to be considerable. The unique formula
of this material resists almost every form of staining, especially those resulting from severe marine conditions. Almost no conventional glue sticks to
the sheets. When connecting and fastening the material it is recommended to drill oversized holes for the fastening of bolts or screws. This is especially
important in the vicinity of cookers and in engine rooms. The material has been approved for contact with food. It is available in polar white, black and
a range of colours.

TITANIUM
Titanium forms a very tenacious surface oxide layer, which is an outstanding corrosion inhibitor. In many harsh environments it can outlast competing
materials as much as 5:1. It is corrosion resistant and has a high strength/weight ratio. Titanium is also erosion-corrosion resistant (critical speed in sea
water is high. At speeds below 35m/s the passivated film is not removed). Titanium can be used in sea water desalination plants and for flow lines and
riser pipes in the offshore industry.
CORTEN
Corten is recommended for use where high structural strength is needed and where maintenance is difficult. It is a high strength, low alloy, weldable
structural steel possessing excellent weathering resistance and it is ideal for galvanising in marine and other aggressive environments. Corten is
available in sheet & plate in 1mm - 50mm thicknesses.
TUBE BUNDLES
Tubes in various metals in a weatherproof plastic jacket for pneumatic and hydraulic control systems including thermal insulated tubing for steam
traced metering, sampling and analyser lines, steam and condenser lines and electrically traced tube bundles for metering, sampling and analyser
lines. Tube bundles provide highly economical solutions, they can be easily and quickly laid like an energy cable, require no maintenance and are
extremely well protected against mechanical damage, abrasion and corrosion. Tube bundles can be delivered in very long units, thus reducing waste
material and the need for tube connections.
Also Available:
Hot rolled plate, floor plate, cold reduced sheet, galvanised sheet, zintec sheet, specialist offshore and abrasive resistant quality steels, universal
beams, columns, channels, hollow sections, equal & unequal angles, rounds, squares, flats & tee sections, seamless & ERW tubulars, welded
structural hollows and bulb flats, grating, perforated sheet and plate, expanded metal, welded and woven mesh.
