1.3. Product application

Benzotriazole has been known for its great versatility. It has been extensively used
as a corrosion inhibitor in the atmosphere and underwater.
It has already been used as a restrainer in photographic emulsions and as a reagent
for the analytical determination of silver.
Corrosion inhibitor
Benzotriazole is an effective corrosion inhibitor for copper and its alloys by
preventing undesirable surface reactions.
It is known that a passive layer consisting of a complex between copper and
benzotriazole, is formed when copper is immersed in a solution containing
benzotriazole. The passive layer is insoluble in aqueous and many organic solutions.
Used in metal working and in art restoration as an anticorrosive, and in the
construction industry as a tarnish remover and a protective coating of metal. It

functions as a corrosion inhibitor in water cooling systems such as automobile

radiators and boilers, and in dry cleaning equipment.
Benzotriazole is highly effective corrosion inhibitors for copper, high copper alloys,
silver, cobalt, aluminum, and zinc.
Benzotriazole is the preferred in protecting metals from corrosion in air.
Benzotriazole protects copper and brass stock during shipment and storage and
between processing steps.
Benzotriazole, is used on copper and brass to prevent tarnishing on printed circuit
boards to prevent oxidation of copper, and in metal cleaners to protect the metal
from harsh chemicals. Benzotriazole is also used in coatings for copper, brass and
aluminum, in printing inks to protect metals in contact with the inks, and in vapor
phase corrosion protection during storage.
In the electronics industry, it is used to treat packing materials for copper electronic
parts, and to extend the life of polymers that are used as insulators for copper wire.
Used in electrolytic processing, where the stripping of metals from copper cathodes
is eased by pretreatment of the cathode with benzotriazole.
Coolant lubricants and corrosion inhibiting fluids may contain up to 0.05%
benzotriazole
Drug precursor
Benzotriazole derivatives have chemical and biological properties that are versatile
in the pharmaceutical industry.
Benzotriazole derivatives act as agonists for many proteins. For instance, vorozole
and alizapride have the inhibitory properties against different proteins and
benzotriazole esters have been reported to work as mechanism-based inactivators
for severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) 3CL protease.
Photographic processing
In photographic processing, benzotriazole acts as an antifogging agent in silverhalide emulsions, restraining the developer and preventing the blackening or
fogging of the image due to over development (NCI78)
Benzotriazole is an anti fogging agent, which is used as a very dilute solution,
usually added to developer to minimise base fog, which might be found with aging
paper.
Can be used as an alternative to cold working developers, or light blue toning. It can
also be used as an additive to liquid emulsion to reduce visible fog.

Other application details
It is included in some formulations of automatic dishwater detergents to prevent
tarnishing of metal pots and silverware, and to inhibit the corrosion of metal
machine parts.
Used in synthetic greases, lubricants, and hydraulic fluids to prevent the oxidation
of these materials which is catalyzed by metal ions.
