Project Motivation
Project Objectives 1
A two-tier intelligent heterogeneous UAV sensor network
Tier 1 sensors patrol
large border areas
detect suspicious
targets and provide
global situation
awareness.
Tier 2 sensors
focused surveillance
tracking targets and
threat evaluation.
Intelligent gathering
Project Objectives 2
Novel sensors and on-board processing generation, integrated on UAV
system.
Develop and integrate sensors of low weight, low cost, high resolution.
EO and Infrared sensors - single- and multi-band
Hyper spectral sensors - which can identify and quantify targets based on
their characteristic spectral signatures
Radar - compact, low power radar with improved techniques for detection
of moving targets
Project Objectives 3
Adapted communications and data links
Sensor Fusion and Data exploitation.
Cooperative networking, UAVs
innovative on-board
processing capabilities using state of the art of parallel
processing hardware.
Appropriate interoperability and Standardization
Concept Validation through on-ground and in-flight test
demonstration (primary site trials in Greece, NAMFI test range
Crete, and alternative site in Portugal).
Assessment of cost-effectiveness of the proposed border
monitoring system via cost-benefit analysis.

Operational Scenario
The firsttier sensors (miniSAR), carried by TIER 1 UAV, isused to
patrol large border areas to detect suspicious targets, in this case it is
used to patrol a smaller area, to detect the speedboat boat heading
the fishing boat.
Fed with the information collected by the firsttier sensors, the
secondtier sensors will be deployed by smaller UAS to provide more
focused surveillance capability by reconnaissance, identification and
tracking the targets (people from fishing boat embarking the
speedboat and the speedboat heading coast line).
MiniSAR (first tier sensors) continues with surveillance activities, as
the position of mother fishing boat after meeting the speedboat.
Demo Information
NAMFI Facilities:
Target Area at Pervolitsa for 15 days to preform integration and
testing activities
Firing range airspace area A Very short Range (for 3 days)
Number of Participants During Integration (10 days): 25 people
Number of Demo participants ( 1 day ): 30 people (EU Commission
representatives, FRONTEX, EDA, EUROSUR, etc)
Duration of Demo: 15 days (integration / test flights / certification /
demo)
Other Facilities required: accommodation, Cantonment facilities and
other equipment will be detailed by SUNNY partners during the
preparation for the activity execution based on NAMFI procedures.
Time of Demo: week 43 , 44 (Early November)
Dissemination
SUNNY DEMO will be disseminated within EU and International through the
following channels:
SUNNY User Advisory Group: Organizations (EDA Wise Pen Team, FRONTEX,
NATIONAL COAST GUARDS) will be involved as end users. The Consortium will
host two User Workshops to allow the advisory group to help direct the
development.
Web site: The project web site will report all the objectives of the project.
(Demonstration materials, validation and results)
Dissemination events & Papers in the scientific literature: SUNNY results will be
presented to leading European and international conferences, journals and
security events as a means of disseminating as widely as possible.
SUNNY developments and outcomes will be diffused to major European relevant
bodies. Contribution to ongoing initiatives like EUROSUR via the
improvement/use of surveillance tools for border surveillance. Exchange and
exploitation of SUNNY outcomes to FRONTEX needs and requirements in terms
of platforms and systems that can enhanced the border surveillance.
