Octyl methoxycinnamate is an oil soluble chemical sunscreen agent that absorbs UVB
radiation
UVB mainly affects the epidermis the outer layer of the skin. UVB light is responsible for
sunburn and skin cancer (melanoma). UVB
radiation is the most damaging betw een 10.00am and 2.00 pm w hen the sunlight is
brightest. It is also more intense in the summer months,
which accounts for 70% of a yearly UVB dose for each individual. UVB does not penetrate
clouds and cannot penetrate through glass.
seco-steroids (physalins) purified from P. angulata are potent inhibitors of macrophage activation,
blocking the
production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and LPS-induced lethality.
