Abstract
These instructions give you basic guidelines for preparing the papers for the 3rd Greece
Japan Workshop on Seismic Design, Observation and Retrofit of Foundations. Papers
must be submitted using this format. This document is a template for Microsoft Word. If you
are reading a paper version of this document, please download the electronic file from the
workshop website (http://www.ntua.gr/gj-workshop/papers.htm) so you can use it to prepare
your manuscript.

INTRODUCTION

Left and right-justify your columns.

Equations must be included in-line with the text.
Figures and tables may be included either
in-line with the text or in a separate page
that includes only figures and/or tables. You
can place all figures at the end of the text if
you wish so. Text should be single-spaced,
and there should be no extra space between
paragraphs.
Use double-space above and
below each section heading; double space
above and single space below each subheading, as shown in this template.

Your goal is to simulate, as closely as

possible, the format of this page. Authors
affiliations should appear immediately following
their names. Sub-sections are not numbered.
METHODOLOGY

All papers must be submitted electronically.

Please submit in pdf format with all fonts
embedded. Prepare your paper using an A4
page size of 210 mm 297 mm (8.27"
11.69").
1) Type sizes and typefaces: Try to follow
the type sizes specified in Table 1 as best as
you can. Use 14 point Arial (normal) bold,
capital letters for the title, 12 point Arial
(normal) characters for author names, 11
point characters for the main text and 10
point characters for author's affiliations,
abstract, figure and table captions, and for
references.
2) Format: In formatting your page, set the
top margin to 25 mm (1") and bottom margin to
31 mm (1 1/4). Left and right margins should
be 19 mm (3/4"). Use a two-column format
where each column is 83 mm (3 1/4") wide and
spacing of 6 mm (1/4") between columns.
Indent paragraphs by 6 mm (1/4").

Figures and Tables

Papers will be printed in black and white.

Figure captions should be below the figures;
table names and table captions should be
above the tables. Use the abbreviation Fig (or
Figs in plural) even at the beginning of a
sentence.
Figures and tables are left justified if they
are placed in-line with the text, or center
justified if they are placed in a separate page
(in-between text pages or at the end). Captions
are justified accordingly.

Be sure that the symbols in your equation

have been defined before the equation appears
or immediately following.
Other Recommendations

Major section headings are in bold and all

CAPITALS as: INTRODUCTION, FIELD
TESTING
METHODS,
DISCUSSION,
ACKNOWLEDGMENTS, REFERENCES, etc.
Subheadings are in italics. Use either one or
two spaces after periods (be consistent), and
one space after colons.
Use a zero before decimal points: 0.25, not
.25. Indicate sample dimensions as 0.1 cm
0.2 cm, not 0.1 0.2 cm2. When expressing a
range of values, write 7 to 9 or 7-9, not
7~9. Spell units when they appear in text: a
few meters, not a few m. Number each
page at bottom, center: 1, 2, etc.

Fig 1: This is an example of the caption with more

than one line. Indent the second and
subsequent lines to the position of the
position of the leading character in the first
line

Do not label axes only with units. Put units

after the symbol using colon. As in Fig. 3, for
example, write a : g not just g.
Axis labels should be legible, approximately
10-point type.

CONCLUSIONS

A parenthetical statement at the end of a

sentence is punctuated outside of the closing
parenthesis (like this). A graph within a graph is
an inset, not an insert.

Format for References

Citations should be placed in parentheses

including the author(s) name(s) followed by the
year of publication. In case of more than two
authors, the citation should include the name of
the first author, followed by the abbreviation et
al and the year of publication.
Please note that the references at the end
of this document are in the preferred
referencing style and should be written in
alphabetical order.

Format for Equations

Number equations consecutively with

equation numbers in parentheses flush with the
right margin, as in (1). Use parentheses to
avoid ambiguities in denominators.
