Unit 3: Reactions Case Study

Name: _______________________________________

Date: _____________

We have discussed four types of reactions (combustion, synthesis,

decomposition, & replacement). Discuss how each types of chemical
reaction is used by a scientist or medical professional such as a
pharmacist. Make sure you find a research article on each type of
reaction!!

-Combustion is used by scientist to create heat
-also many things such as oxygen.
-carbon dioxide and water

-potassium chloride from potassium and chlorine gas
-he combination of iron and sulfur to form iron (II) sulfide

Decomposition Reaction: Definition & Examples

-Usually the energy is supplied as heat, but sometimes simply a mechanical
bump, electric shock, radiation, or change in humidity or acidity initiates the
process.
-The electrolysis of water into oxygen and hydrogen gas
-potassium chloride into potassium and chlorine gas
-extremely valuable in analytical techniques. Examples include mass
spectrometry, gravimetric analysis, and thermogravimetric analysis.

4. Replacement Source:
Single Replacement reaction
Kendal Orenstein

-metals always replace metals and nonmetals always replace nonmetals in
a compound.
-Can be used in pharmacies to create different types of medicine
-replacing atoms

Discussion about combustion reactions:

-

Include data/findings from all sources, and this must be a complete

paragraph.

In the Scientist world, scientist uses certain things such as heat

and other substances to create certain reactions. Combustions range from
creating oxygen, Carbon dioxide and water. This is important because these
are essentials to everyday life. Allowing plethora of supplies of this stuff is
very important.

Discussion about synthesis reactions:

-

Include data/findings from all sources, and this must be a complete

paragraph.

Scientist uses many combinations when making scientific reactions. Synthesis

reactions could also be used in Pharmacies to help create different types of
medicines for different types of patients. Such as potassium chloride from
potassium and chlorine gas. They could also create combination of iron and sulfur to
form iron (II) sulfide

Discussion about decomposition reactions:

-

Include data/findings from all sources, and this must be a complete

paragraph.

When scientist use decomposition reaction they usually use energy that is supplied
as heat, but sometimes simply a mechanical bump, electric shock, radiation, or
change in humidity or acidity initiates the process. Also the electrolysis of water into
oxygen and hydrogen gas. Another decomposition reaction would be potassium
chloride into potassium and chlorine gas. They also use extremely valuable in
analytical techniques. Examples include mass spectrometry, gravimetric analysis,
and thermogravimetric analysis.
Discussion about replacement reactions:
-

Include data/findings from all sources, and this must be a complete

paragraph.
When scientist use replacements like for example Single replacements,
metals always replace metals and nonmetals always replace nonmetals in a
compound. They also can be used in pharmacies to create different types of
medicine. In things they replace atoms and can create thing such as double
replacement reactions.
