TRANSPONDER KEY & ANTENNA COIL

1. Transponder Key
2. Antenna Coil

The transponder to activate / deactivate the immobiliser system is built in the mechaniocal key.
This key is also called the transponder key and is located, during deactivation of the immobiliser
system, in the key switch lock.
The antenna coil assembly is located around the key lock and activates the transponder key after the
key switch is turned ON.

2. Cross Beam
3. Anttena Coil
4. Steering Shaft
5. Immobilser Control Unit (ICU) Location
6. Immobilser Control Unit (ICU) Location (New Model)

The immobiliser control unit (ICU) is attached to the cross beam bracket, near the meter panel.
The immobiliser control unit (ICU) controls the immobiliser system by deactivating / activating the
immobiliser relay and exchanging request and immobiliser signal with the engine control module
(ECM).

TFR/S Immobiliser System-7

ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (ECM)

1. Engine Control Module (ECM) (6VD1 & 6VE1)

2. Engine Control Module (ECM) (C24SE)
3. Engine Control Module (ECM) (4JA1-TC & 4JH1-TC)
4. Engine Control Module (ECM) (C22NE)

The engine control module (ECM) exchanges the request and immobiliser signals, and controls the
CHECK ENGINE lamp and the fuel supply.

CHECK ENGINE LAMP

1. Check Engine Lamp

2. Check Engine Lamp (New Model)

The CHECK ENGINE lamp is located in the instrument panel and supplies the driver information
regarding the status of the immobiliser system, when the key switch is turned ON.
If the CHECK ENGINE lamp flashes with key switch ON, it indicates that an incorrect signal is received
from the transponder and / or an incorrect immobiliser signal has been send out by immobiliser control
unit (ICU).

TFR/S Immobiliser System-8

SYSTEM FLOW
STEP 1

1A. ICU Activates Antenna

1B. Antenna Activates Transponder
1C - 1D. Fixed Code Transmitted to The ICU

When the key switch is turned ON, the ICU supplies a high frequency alternating voltage to the
antenna.
The antenna transmits this alternating voltage to the transponder key, to energize the transponder
chip. Now the transponder chip is able to send the "Fixed Code" back via the antenna to the ICU.
The transponder key has no conventional power supply. The power is supplied to the transponder chip
via the high frequency carrier wave supplied by the dipole antenna coil, fitted around the ignition lock.
The range of this wave is very limited so that the transponder chip identification code cannot be
intercepted.

TFR/S Immobiliser System-9

STEP 2

CHECK
ENGINE

2A. ICU Activates the Immobiliser Relay or Starter Relay

2B. If The Incorrect Fixed Code is Received, The ECM Activates the CHECK ENGINE Lamp

Otherwise the ICU does not recognize this transponder key and Step 2 will not be fully executed.
When the ICU receives a correct "Fixed Code", it connects the immobiliser relay or starter relay
windings to ground. When the immobiliser relay or starter relay windings are powered, it is possible to
crank the engine.

If the ICU receives an incorrect "Fixed Code", e.g. from a non-programmed transponder key, the ECM
notifies this and it will activate the CHECK ENGINE lamp. Then, DTC B8010 "Unknown Transponder
Key" will be stored at the same time. This lamp will start flashing with a frequency of 2 Hz and the
engine cannot be cranked.

TFR/S Immobiliser System-10

STEP 3

3A. The ECM Transmits Request Signal to The ICU

3C. The Response is Calculated by The Transponder Key
3D. The Response (Actual Immobiliser Signal) is Then Transmitted from The Transponder Key Back to The ECM via
The ICU
3E. The ECM compares the Response (Immobiliser Signal) to the Calculated Code
3F. After The Correct Received Immobiliser Signal is Received, The ECM Enables The Injection & Ignition Systems

During Step 1 and Step 2 the ECM sends a request signal (in order to receive the needed immobiliser
signal) to the ICU via the CHECK ENGINE lamp wire.
At the same time, the ECM calculates a random number, the called "Challenge".
The "Challenge" is transmitted from the transponder key, the transponder chip calculates the called
"Response".
The "Response" consists of the following:
- Random number code (calculated by the ECM)
- Secret key code (fixed inside the transponder chip, ECM, and ICU)
- Transponder ID code (fixed inside the ECM and the transponder key)

The calculated "Response" is transferred from the transponder key via the ICU to the ECM. The
"Response" from the ICU to the ECM is the actual immobiliser signal. Because the ECM itself
calculates the "Response", and compares this with the incoming "Response" (immobiliser signal) from
the ICU.
The 4JA1-TC or 4JH1-TC engine model, if both signals are similar, the ECM supplies the pump control
unit (PSG) with the correct information (desired fuel quantity and fuel injection timing) in order to
actuate the internal actuators.
The C22NE, C24SE, 6VD1 & 6VE1 engine model, if both signals are similar the ECM enables injection
& ignition systems.

The gasoline engine model, the vehicle speed signal is sent from the vehicle speed sensor to the ECM
via the ICU. The Response signal line is used for transmitting of vehicle speed sensor pulse while the
vehicle is running.

The ECM transmits request signal "Challenge" to the ICU when the key switch is only turned on at the
first cycle.
When the key switch is turned on again within 10 - 12 seconds (duration is changed depending on the
engine system) since the key switch was tuned off, the ECM does not transmit request signal
"Challenge" to the ICU.
Meanwhile, the ICU recognizes "No ECM Challenge" condition and store the DTC B8007 "No Engine
Request Received" as present failure. Even though the this condition was happened, the engine can
be started usually.
In order to recover the engine stall under the imminence condition, e.g. engine stall at traffic crossing
or railroad crossing, the ICU enables to prompt start the engine, and then DTC will be remained as
history in the next usual ignition cycle.

SECURITY CODE
The security code protects the immobiliser control unit (ICU) against unauthorized programming and
data access from the Tech 2. The security code consists of four digits code number and is
programmed into the immobiliser control unit (ICU) and engine control module (ECM).
New control unit is not programmed with a security code.
If the control unit is replace, the security code entered in the CAR PASS, transponder key, etc. must be
programmed into the new control unit with Tech 2.
An already used immobiliser can be reused in a different car by initializing the immobiliser.
After that you can program the security code again. For initializing command you need the current
security code.
If the immobiliser control unit (ICU) is returned (e.g. warranty cases), always enclosed the security
code that is allocated to that control unit.

TFR/S Immobiliser System-20

TRANSPONDER KEY
If a transponder key is lost, all transponder keys in the immobiliser control system must be erased.
Transponder keys can be ordered via the "Your proper organization as parts department" as
previously be proving the mechanical key number.
The mechanical key number is provided on the CAR PASS.
Thereafter, existing and new transponder keys are programmed consecutively using Tech 2. The
vehicle can then no-longer be started using lost key.
Each transponder keys has different ID. If a customer wants more transponder keys, maximum five
transponder keys can be provided by additional programming by Tech 2.

NOTE:
If essential tool Tech 2 for programming and proper software for Tech 2 are not available, there is no
permanent way to fix system.
Temporary replace to new engine control module (ECM), new immobiliser control unit (ICU) and new
transponder key without any security code can make the system deactivated, but it does not last long.
Those replacement does not solve any condition. Even after replacement, the system is activated
automatically in short time and then no operation of the vehicle can be made in any way.
Tech 2 should be provided in your organization.
