Sustainability and Value of Building and Constructing Residential Buildings in

Wadi Hadramaut
"A case study of Shibam Hadramout buildings"
Abstract:
Value engineering is one of the modern sciences that aims to reconcile the cost
to the performance of various systems. This science has proved a high potential in
overcoming difficulties and challenges that were facing the production process. Besides,
it has had a vital role in improving the architecture and in helping designers to create
artistic ideas. Moreover, it has raised the architecture value and reduced its
constructional and operational cost.
The architecture which meets peoples needs without any prejudice to the needs
and wealth of future generations is the sustainable architecture.
The sustainability of the constructional environment leads to the development
of architecture which subsequently reduces the wasted energy when operating
residential buildings.
In Wadi Hadhramaut, the clay civilization is classified as unique and
distinctive. The city buildings though had been built approximately before 300 years.
Yet, they are still inhibited and well-constructed. As its significance, the study focuses
on the following:

The dry desert climate of Wadi Hadhramaut.

The elements of value engineering and sustainable architecture.
The extent to which the operational cost of residential buildings can be reduced.

The research problem lies in finding in the study area modern buildings whose
materials are non-local. These buildings do not harmonize with the environment and
their operational cost is so high compared with old clay buildings of Wadi Hadhramaut.
The study aims to reduce the operational cost of any residential building depending on
methodological inputs and scientific grounds in order to achieve a possibility of
operating buildings with a valuable and sustainable method and a least operational cost.
To reach this goal, the methodology should depend on a comparative analysis for two
samples of both the modern and the clay buildings of the study area, and on the extent
of the satisfaction of users of these two types of buildings. Then the study will come up
with results and recommendations that helps in improving the efficiency and capacity of
buildings and getting the least operational cost.
