Eric Squicquero is a paramedic who has served in the field for 24 years, with an

additional eleven years as a police officer. At the time, his training only required about three to
four months of actual Emergency Medical Services training. He spent a year and a half in
paramedic school where he described the schooling as him having no social life and having to
mainly focus on his academics. However, he was in no way in experienced with the medical
field, he has 600 hours in actual clinical time, meaning any training in the field. He also works as
a fireman due to the lack of them in the Horry County area, he finds battling fires more fun than
working in Emergency Medical Services. However, he still loves working as a paramedic.
When asked what was the worst case he had ever witnessed, he said that when working in
Pennsylvania he received a call about a three-month old in cardiac arrest. The three-month old
was abused with by the parents and was found with bruises and burns from cigarettes being
extinguished. On that note, he mentioned that 75 percent of working in Emergency Medical
Services was mental and being able to endure the horrors you will witness. But, perhaps the
funniest case he had witnessed was when two men on Synthetic Cathinones, or more commonly
referred to as Bath Salts, were found running down a street naked. Eric said that in this case
Emergency Medical Services could do nothing for gentlemen, as it was more of a police matter.
But, Eric also mentioned how in EMS one will typically have to deal with frustrating people.
One example of this was when Eric had to deal with a Russian couple who spoke little to no
English whatsoever. The Russian couple had a translator of course, but the translator also spoke
very little English and the English they did know was not very good. When asked what was
wrong with the Russian couples baby, they told him that he wouldnt stop crying.
