INTRODUCTION
This File Manager is an integral part of the Mazak CAMWARE and
is incorporated with the latest machining data management
concept to deal with various tasks to operate the CAMWARE
system effectively.
The File Manager, which is a 32 bit application software, runs
under a Windows 98SE,ME or Windows 2000,XP operating system.
This can handle various NC program associated data files, such as
CAD drawings and parts information. The File Manager can also
provide functions of NC data back up, machine communication,
user and NC program authorization.
Furthermore, an instant view facility of drawings or a 3D image of
the component and manufacturing instruction during browsing,
together with a quick search function, are key features to operate
the comprehensive system effectively in a user friendly manner.
The CAMWARE system allows program generation or editing of
Mazatrol Fusion 640M, M PLUS, M32 and M2 for machining
centres and Mazatrol Fusion 640T, T PLUS, T32 and T2/T3 for
turning centres.
This is supplemented by the File Manager's Mazatrol format
conversion function, which provides the facility to convert Mazatrol
programs for different type of controllers.
The CAMWARE system can be set up either as a stand-alone or
point to point network configuration. The system can also be
extended to full factory information network as your business grows.
Features:
Self configurable database for easy access eg. Customer Name,
Projects, Machine Data, Drawings, Parts Name, NC Program
etc.
Automatic generation of directory and data file.

FILE MANAGER STRUCTURE

2.

FILE MANAGER STRUCTURE

The CAMWARE File Manager is built upon a very powerful, fast
and reliable relational database to handle numerous data file
management tasks in order to meet your daily requirements,
together with obtaining crucial manufacturing information at hand.
The File Manager consists of three major functional modules:
Database, Data Communication and Mazatrol program format
conversion.
(1) Database
The File Manager database provides three major data
structures, such as Part Data, Machine Data and User Data
Information.
Warning: The CAMWARE is designed to use a simple
database as a default for both Machining and
Turning Centres modules. You can generate a
separate database if required, but database merge
or separation in the later stage is not permitted.
(2) Data Communication
The NC programs can be transferred from/to File Manager by
the following functions:
CMT File
Machine
Mazak Micro Disk
M640 Floppy Disk (Mazatrol Fusion 640 machine only)
All Mazatrol programs in CAMWARE will be stored in Mazatrol
binary format, so the File Manager offers the CMT File facility
to convert CMT format into Mazatrol binary format. The CMT
file is usually created by Mazatrol Editor or Mazak Data
Transfer software.
The File Manager also provides a Mazak Data Transfer
function to back up the NC program and machine parameters.

Yamazaki Mazak Corp.

2-1

FILE MANAGER STRUCTURE

The Mazatrol NC program data files which are created by the

third party software or system can be converted to the
CAMWARE data format by the Hybrid File function.
(3) Mazatrol Program Format Conversion
The File Manager can provide a function of program format
conversion among M640M, M PLUS, M32 and M2 (M640T, T
PLUS, T32 and T2/T3) controllers.
This function can be activated when copying or transferring a
file from the machine automatically.
(4) Other Functionality
E-mail: E-mail facility is available to send/receive quick
correspondence.
Log messages: All activities on CAMWARE system
including File Manager will be recorded into the log file with
date, time and user name.
When the CAMWARE system is installed for the first time, you
must input all necessary information as described in the MAZAK
CAMWARE Installation Manual. The initial data input process and
the basic structure of the File Manager is shown in Appendix A.
The following schematic diagram shows database related functions
for the File Manager. All File Manager sub-screens are accessible
directly from the File Manager main screen and the system
consists of three prime screens, ie. User Data, Machine Data and
Part Data. The File Manager is normally operated from the Part
Data Screen for your daily use.

MAIN MENU
To change the name of Part Data field

The Mazak CAMWARE File Manager uses a comprehensive

database to handle various information related to the NC program.
Therefore, the name of the Part Data field must be configured
before the File Manager is used. The title of the Part Data field
can be changed any time, but its data is not exchangeable
from one column to another column.
Note:

The file directory name of the Part Data is created

automatically at the end of the Part Data input by using the
names given in the first two fields such as Project and
Part Name. Therefore, these two fields must always be
filled in.
Example : C:\CAMWARE\USR\PROJECT\PART1.MPS
Note: MPS denotes controller type and is defined
automatically by the CAMWARE File Manager.

The NC program created will be stored in a pre-defined or a new

Part Data file directory. All the related information, such as User
Data and Machine Data are linked to the NC program by the
database.
The following is an example to show the alternative configuration of
the Part Data data fields.

The facility allows the users to categorise the Part Data data files

The File Manager will automatically assign the next available
machine number. This machine number is used to identify the
appropriate fields in the database and used for MC name file
extension.
The machine number is allocated at the next available field or the
increment of the last machine number on the list. For example, the
last machine number on the list is 10, the default machine number
displayed in this box is 11. However, if there is a space before
machine number 10 (eg. MC No = 3), the File Manager
automatically displays 3 in the box for the next machine number to
be used.
Note: The maximum number of machine data which can be
entered is 999.

Although you can operate CAMWARE based on the system default

machine data, you can replace it by uploading machine data from
the M PLUS, M640M/T/MT or T PLUS controllers in order to
operate the system under the same conditions as the machine.
Initially you have to select the machine from the Machine Data
main screen and select the appropriate method of data transfer.
Only the Machine Data of the M640M/T/MT controller type can
be modified and downloaded from the CAMWARE to the
machine controller by using the M640 Floppy Disk or the
Ethernet network.
Important:

You must transfer the following configuration

files together when you upload the machine
parameters;
Tool data,
Tool File,
Cutting conditions,
User parameters,
Chuck jaw ( for T Plus and M640T/MT only ) and
Machine parameters ( for M640M/T/MT only ).
Data transferred separately will be invalid in
CAMWARE.

The following five options are available to generate user defined

machine data files.

4.4

MACHINE DATA AND DIRECTORY STRUCTURE

The Machine data gives the user information concerning the NC
type, communication setting of the machine etc.

Each machine has its own directory which is used to store various
original default machine data, or that uploaded from the machine.
These data files are essential for the CAMWARE system to operate
correctly.

When users create a new machine record, the File Manager

creates a new directory under the directory \MC\ or \TC\ for
machining centres and turning centres respectively. The directory
name is the machine name combined with the machine number.
Then the File Manager will copy the default data files from the
default directory (\MC\default or \TC\Default) into the corresponding
machine directory.
If required, these data files can be uploaded from the machine for
M PLUS, T PLUS or M640M/T/MT controllers and the new data
files will overwrite the previous data files. All of these data files are
automatically created by CAMWARE, any change or corruption of
data causes malfunction of the CAMWARE operation.

CAM AND PART DATABASE CREATION

The Part Data function and CAM operation are closely linked
together to use CAMWARE effectively.
There are two cases in which you will generate a new program in
CAMWARE; from new or using an existing program from another
computer or Mazak machine.
(1) New Program Generation
If you are going to create a new program in CAMWARE, you can
start generating a program immediately by clicking the mouse
button on New in the File menu on the CAM screen. You do not
need to create Part Data at this stage.
After completion of the program generation, you can use either the
Save or Save As command to store the program. The File
Manager will automatically display create a New Part Data
dialogue box in order to input necessary information in the
database.

Yamazaki Mazak Corp.

5-5

PART DATA
(2) Using an existing NC program
If you are going to use existing programs, you need to create a
database first. Then you must transfer and execute the
copy/convert command to generate files with the appropriate type
of Mazatrol format. Once the Mazatrol program is registered in the
Part Data database you can open the file by clicking Open
command in the File Menu of CAM screen.

PART DATA

5.3

DATA FILE DIRECTORY STRUCTURE

The Part Data gives the user information concerning the NC
program such as project, customer, part number, drawing number,
required tools etc. related to this program. The File Manager links
together all this critical information within the database and also
generates a data file structure automatically in the following
manner.

A NC program is stored under the Part Name directory with

extension of the controller type which is created under the Project
directory. For instance:
Project:
Part Name:
NC Prog.
The path is:

PROJECT1
PART 1
1000
\USR\PROJECT1\PART1\00001000.XXX
(XXX denotes the controller type)

Type of Data Files:

The following data file extensions are used to control various data
files under CAMWARE operation.

*.FIC,*.NDX
*.VDM
*.VDS
*.M64,*.MPS,*.M32
*.ISO
*.WMF or *.BMP
*.TXT
*.TLS
*.DAT
*.DXF,*.IGS
*.PRG

MAIN FUNCTION OF PART DATA SCREEN

Browse
There are two modes available in this browse function.
(i) Whole Part Database
This option provides you with the facility to display all Part Data
information, including Project and Part Name in a spreadsheet
form table. The following six categories can be sorted: Part ID
(ID No.), Project, Part Name, Drawing No, Process No and
Program No.
Note:

The titles of the field names (eg. Project and Part

Name) are user definable and may differ from your
system. See 3.1 Set up section.

By moving the cursor to the appropriate box in the browse and

clicking the mouse, it will sort automatically in the corresponding
field in alpha-numerical order. This sorting process can be
started from the current record, which is highlighted in the table.
For example, if TRILOBE is the current record, in the Part
Name field, File Manager will sort all part name records from
the Part Name starting with T. Alternatively, you can type in
a character or series of characters to initiate the sorting process.

Yamazaki Mazak Corp.

5-9

PART DATA
(ii) Group Part Database
Since most of the machining jobs, in practice, can be
categorized under Project Name, Part Name Program Number
combined with Program Type, these four fields are displayed in
the common area as shown below when this option is selected.

The selection of this option initiates the File Manager to sort and
categorize the above two fields of Project and Part Name. By
clicking the mouse button in the box of Project, all project
names available are displayed in the drop down list, which
allows you to select the item.
Once the item is selected by clicking the mouse button in the list,
the File Manager will continue to sort the next field of
information (ie., Part Name) and again display the sorted
information in the drop down list when the mouse is clicked in
the box of Part Name. Further selection of the items initiate
the display of the corresponding number of programs with the
program number and program type.
Therefore, when this option is selected, only information
relevant to the specific part directory (eg. \Project\Part Name)
will be displayed in the table of the Part Data.

Additional NC Program Information
Additional information regarding the NC program can be stored
here. Click on the Part Data Information button to display or
modify the Part Data information as below.
Main, sub program or common sub program:
Define the program as the main, sub program or common sub
program.

If it is a sub program, the main program must exist in the same

directory. The main and sub-program relationship can be easily
visualised when the Group Part Database in Browse is used.
Warning : If the main and sub program are not stored in the same
directory or the same Project and Part Name, the CAM
cannot find the sub program when it is called from the
main program during the tool path simulation.
The CAMWARE provides a directory where commonly used sub
programs can be stored for your convenience. These sub
programs can be used for common machining features. For this
purpose, you must use an unique common program number in the
whole system (e.g. Program number 9000 onwards).

5.6.1 CMT File

This option provides the facility to disassemble or generate a CMT
file stored in the CAMWARE computer, which is transferable at a
later stage by using the Mazak Data Transfer Software package or
equivalent.
(i) Extract data from a CMT file
1. When the CMT file data is utilized to edit the NC program,
you have to extract a required number of NC programs
stored in the CMT file since a single CMT file can contain
multiple programs and other information (Refer to section
5.6.6 NC Data Back Up in detail). From the Part Data main
screen, you must select the destination file directory before
clicking the CMT file button to open the MDT <-> Mazak
Camware screen.
2. Select the data format from the Format drop down menu as
shown below.

3. Select Extract from CMT file from the CMT format

conversion menu.
4. Click on

6.1

COPY/CONVERT

CAMWARE can handle different types of Mazatrol NC programs.

All file management operations should be made using the
CAMWARE File Manager facility. For example, if a file is copied
using the MS Windows function, you must make sure that the data
format and directory are consistent to those of CAMWARE and
compatible under File Manager Database structure. For example,
an unauthorized copy and re-name operation of the file name
extension causes a NC data file compatibility problem and you may
experience unexpected results.
The CAMWARE File Manager provides the function to convert NC
programs automatically between two different controllers in
Mazatrol binary data format, whenever the Copy/Convert command
is executed.
Since the CAMWARE does not provide the function to convert the
Mazatrol format within the CAM environment (ie. only the same
type of the file format can be handled in CAM), it is recommended
to use this copy/convert function to create appropriate type of
format prior to importing to the CAM. This is particularly important
to upgrade the NC program from the old type NC to a newer one
(eg. M32 M640) in order to achieve a higher level compatibility.
If the NC types are different during the copy operation, the File
Manager will automatically convert Mazatrol Program Format to
suit, and produce conversion report.
1. Move the cursor bar to highlight the selected NC program in the
Part Data main screen. This NC program is the source of the
conversion.
2. Click the mouse on the Copy/Conv button to convert the
selected NC program. The dialogue box is displayed as follows:

Part Database

Each time when the CAMWARE software is closed down

successfully, those 6 files are automatically copied into the backup
directory according to the current date.

The File Manager will keep the last seven days backup data. All
backup data older than seven days will be automatically deleted.
To restore the backup data, use Windows Explorer to copy those 6
files back into the main directory C:\CAMWARE, and restart the
CAMWARE.
You only have to restore the backup data in the case of database
corruption. Always restore the latest backup data.

If it is missing, shut down the system and turn the power off on the
computer, then connect the dongle to the USB port.
Reboot the computer and start up the system again.
Note : CAMWARE requires the dongle with appropriate password
for each module. If you are going to run both Machining
Centres and Turning Centres modules on the same
computer, you need to connect two USB dongles

2.

Check whether the serial number file which corresponds to

the dongle exists in the CAMWARE system file directory
(For example: C:\CAMWARE\Profiles).
If the serial number file is missing, copy the file with PAS as the
extension of the file name from the password disk to the Mazak
CAMWARE system file directory.
