A MESSAGE FROM OUR GOVERNOR

Dear Brothers and Co-Workers:

We recently had the opportunity to greet and meet six teenagers and their support families visiting from the
Mooseheart residential childcare facilities sponsored by the MD-DE-DC Association. They were greeted on August 1
with refreshments and goody bags followed by an outing to a Blue Rocks ball game. The following day they visited the
Adventure Aquarium in Camden, New Jersey and traveled to Philadelphia to taste the famous Philly Cheese Steak
before returning to their lodging. Numerous other activities and interactions with our members were well received by
the kids. All reports expressed their appreciation of the warm welcome they received from our members.
Many of our members attended the Moose International Convention in St. Louis, Missouri, and also just returned
from our MD-DE-DC Association Summer Conference in Hunt Valley, Maryland, where the Claymont Moose and
members received various awards as follows:
International Awards
5 Star Premier Lodge Award (5th consecutive year)
Jim Sheftz Governor Award of Excellence
Andy Lechette Claymonts Moose of the Year
John Slotwinski 25 Membership Award

MD-DE-DC Association Awards

Jason Ostroff Arrowhead Award
Mike Slotwinski Strive for 5 Membership (3 month period)
Lee Anderson Claymonts Lifetime Achievement Award

We are receiving many compliments on the enhancements performed at the Lodge during the summer months
which mainly consist of the new upholstered seats, removal of the DJ Booth, painting, and a new TV. The Lodge
membership has increased which is felt to be directly associated with these recent enhancements to our facilities.
I want to thank our members and the Women of the Moose who generously volunteered their time and
efforts with greeting and socializing with the Mooseheart teenagers, lodge activities, and the enhancements to our
facilities.
In addition to continued donations to charitable organizations, other efforts are being considered for
enhancements in communication, fundraisers, lodge activities, membership, and facilities. Stay tuned!
Fraternally yours,
Bob Cannon

A MESSAGE FROM OUR SENIOR REGENT

Dear Brothers and Co-Workers:
Here we are at the beginning of a new season. Where did the summer go? I hope your summer was a pleasant
one. Bob and I attended our first Moose International Convention in St. Louis and our first Moose Summer
Conference in Hunt Valley. Both were enjoyable and very knowledgeable.
Our summer events were a success starting with the Beginning of Summer Party, hosted by Missy and Andy,
and ending with the always successful Timmy Speakman Memorial Crab Feast. Thank you, Patty Hudak, and her
crew for a great job. I know Timmy was smiling down on us that day. Another highlight was the visit from the boys and
their house family from Mooseheart. Those six boys certainly warmed many of our hearts. Thank you to all those who
came out to welcome them to our Lodge. A big thank you to everyone who planned, participated, and helped out to
make their visit so enjoyable. Thank you, Beth Sellers, for the WSFS bags and water bottles that allowed us to stuff
them full of goodies to take back to their motel rooms.
Please remember to check our upcoming events and mark your calendars. It should be a fun time for all.
Remember to check the door before coming into the social quarters where you will find sign-up sheets for our different
events. When planning an event, the number of people attending is so very helpful to know.
Co-workers, our meetings are the 2nd and 4th Monday of the month at 6:30 P.M. We would love to see you. Your
ideas are important to us! Also, we could use some cooks for Friday night dinners. I know that there are plenty of you
in this Lodge. How about giving it a try! There will always be help available if you need it.
Enjoy the fall and the upcoming holidays. See you at the Lodge.
In Faith, Hope, and Charity,
Lorraine Cannon

MOOSE INTERNATIONAL NEWS AND UPDATES

ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP CAMPAIGN MOOSE - RAISE THE ROOF (5-1-16 4-30-17)
During this campaign, we will focus on our core values of growing our Lodges and Chapters.
By raising awareness of the Moose, and what we do for our children at Mooseheart, our seniors
at Moosehaven, and our local communities, our potential for growth is limitless. A member who
sponsors his/her first member will receive a Raise the Roof lapel pin.

MOOSE YOUTH AWARENESS PROGRAM

Claymont Lodge and Chapter are seeking current high school students to participate in this program
with a chance to earn monetary awards. The initial event will be held on November 6, 2016.
If you are aware of a student who would be interested in participating, contact a Chapter
officer prior to October 31.
Students sponsored by Claymont Lodge/Chapter will be required to attend a get-acquainted and overview
session in the month of November at a nearby Lodge. They will then be required to prepare a written
report and present their Moose Kid Talks a minimum of 3 times to local school students, church groups,
scouts, etc. In early May, approximately 60 applicants are selected by their peers to attend the International
Youth Awareness Congress. Five students are selected by the attendees to receive scholarships. The
awards are 1st place-$12,000, 2nd place-$8,000, third place-$5,000, 4th place $3,000, and 5th place $2,000.
For more than 25 years, the Moose Fraternity has organized high school students into a highly effective
speakers bureau with the goal of educating pre-school and elementary school-aged children on a variety
of topics including drug and alcohol abuse, child abuse, stranger danger, bullying and peer pressure, and
healthy habits and nutrition.
Through Moose Kids Talks presentations, participants in the program have reached an audience of more
than 750,000 children throughout North America. Students have a chance to compete for $30,000 in
college scholarship money that is awarded annually by Moose International through this program. The
future rests in the hands, hearts, and minds of our children. We as members of the Loyal Order of Moose
and Women of the Moose will continue to provide assistance to make our communities a better place for
families to live and for our children to grow.

DO WE HAVE HARMONY?
Some members of Claymont Lodge and Chapter attended the recent MD-DE-DC Moose
Association Summer Conference in Hunt Valley, MD. One of our official visitors was Janet
Fregulia, Director of Moose Charities, at Moose International. Jan shared some disturbing news.
She reported that during the past year, a number of Moose Lodges and Chapters have been shut
downbut not because of declining membership or financial difficulties. The reason is lack of
harmony among members due to personality conflicts. People just cant seem to get along with
one another. What a shame.
Human nature tells us that everyone doesnt always like everyone else. However, as Moose
members, we have made a commitment to work together for the good of our fraternity since we
all have the responsibility to provide for our children and seniors. Please remember when you
joined the Moose, you took an oath to support our children at Mooseheart and our seniors at
Moosehaven. When we raise money, we raise it mainly for these two reasons. So please put
aside your differences and hard feelings for certain individuals and lets work together in harmony
to keep the Moose fraternity, as well as our own Lodge and Chapter, in existence for all to enjoy
for a long time. Remember..those little children and seniors really need us !

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

TO MAINTAIN LODGE AND CHAPTER HARMONY
BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU SAY....
In speaking of a persons faults,
Pray dont forget your own,
Remember those with homes of glass
Should never throw a stone.
If we have nothing else to do
But talk of those who sin,
Tis better we commence at home
And from that point begin.
We have no right to judge a man
Until hes fairly tried,
Should we not like his company,
We know the world is wide.
Some may have faults and who has not,
The old as well as young,
We may, perhaps, for aught we know
Have fifty to their one.
Ill tell you of a better plan
And find it works full well,
To try my own defect to cure
Before of others tell.
And though I sometimes hope to be
No worse than some I know,
My own shortcomings bid me let
The faults of others go.
Then let us all when we commence
To slander friend or foe,
Think of the harm one word may do
To those we little know.
Remember, curses sometimes like
Our chickens, roost at home,
Dont speak of others faults until
We have none of our own.
