Tesla Motors

Project Proposal

Tesla Motors, Inc. is an American automotive and energy storage company

founded by Elon Musk that manufactures electric cars and its components and
battery products. From the beginning Teslas long term strategic goal was to
create affordable mass market electric vehicles. For the innovative electric cars
that tesla manufactured, it received many awards. It focuses on pure electric
propulsion technology for all the vehicles. Tesla aims to disrupt the automotive
industry through its innovative and sustainable technologies.
Tesla is not just an automaker, but also a technology and design company with a
focus on energy innovation.
Tesla was established with the mission to accelerate the use of sustainable
energy around the world. For this they came up with electric cars having features
like incredible power, instant torque and zero emissions. It also came up with
superchargers for home and industrial use.
Its first production vehicle Tesla Roster was first highway capable all electric
sports car which could travel more than 200 miles per charge. The Model S which
was a sedan had three battery pack options for a range of up to 265 miles per
charge. It also launched 85D and P85D dual motor al wheel drive variant of the
same model. Later this came with a camera mounted on the top of the
windshield along with a forward looking radar in the lower part of grill and
ultrasonic sensors in both the front and rear bumpers. Its latest model is Model 3
launched in 2014.
Tesla developed a supercharger network in order to allow quick charging of cars
in long journeys. As of May 2016, it established around 624 stations globally with
3078 chargers. In 2014, It launched the Destination charging location network
by providing High powered wall chargers to high end hotels, shopping centres
etc. where customers spend most of their time.
The objective of the project is to study how tesla incorporated innovation
management in its strategic planning and integrated with various players to
make a paradigm shift in the way the car industry has oriented itself. We will try
to emphasize on the following aspects in this project
1) Industry structure and Teslas strategy in view of Porters five forces
2) Open Innovation and Teslas decision of withdrawing from profit making by
licencing of patents
3) Integration of innovation management into corporate planning in Tesla
4) Innovation management through partnerships and licencing carried out by
Tesla on the supplier side. For example partnership with Panasonic as
battery supplier and partnership with Toyota for production system of
Electric cars
5) Internal and External sources of technology at Tesla
6) New product development. For example development of Model S at Tesla
7) Challenges that are faced by Tesla and what is the way ahead .How Tesla
is going to maintain the innovation culture
8) Analogs (B+) and Antilogs (B-) from the industry and how Tesla can learn
from them to be a profit making organization.
