No matter who you are or where you are
on life's journey, you are welcome
here. We believe in extravagant welcome. This is why we insist that God's communion table is open, not closed, and
God's gift and claim in baptism are irrevocable. We advocate justice for
all. Our congregations extend hospitality
as a sign of God's inclusive love. We
teach that evangelism - offering bread to those
in search of it - is God's mission. Our perspective is global, not provincial. We work with - not
against - people of other faiths. Why?
Because God is still speaking!

"A Covenant For Civility: Come Let Us

Reason Together" 2010
(Taken from October 2016 Salem UCC Lamplighter)

How good and pleasant it is when the people of God

live together in unity.--Psalm 133:1
"1.
We commit that our dialogue with each other
will reflect the spirit of the Scriptures, where our posture toward each other is to be "quick to listen, slow to
speak and slow to become angry" (James 1:19).
2.
We believe that each of us, and our fellow human beings, are created in the image of God. The
respect we show to each other in our common humanity, particularly in how we speak to each other. "With
the tongue we bless the Lord and Father, and with it
we curse those who are made in the likeness of
God...this ought not to be so" (James 3:9, 10).
3.
We pledge that when we disagree, we will do
so respectfully, without falsely impugning the other's
motives, attacking the other's character, or questioning the other's faith, and recognizing in humility that in
our limited, human opinions, "we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror" (1 Corinthians 13:12). We will
therefore "be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love" (Ephesians
4:2).
4.
We will ever be mindful of the language we use
in expressing our disagreements, being neither arrogant nor boastful in our beliefs: "Before destruction
one's heart is haughty, but humility goes before
honor" (Proverbs 18:12).
5.
We recognize that we cannot function together
as citizens of the same community, whether local or
national, unless we are mindful of how we treat each
other in pursuit of the common good in the common
life we share together. Each of us must therefore "put
off falsehood and speak truthfully to his neighbor, for
we are all members of one body" (Ephesians 4:25).
6.
We commit to pray for our political leaders-those with whom we may agree, as well as those with

whom we may disagree. "I urge that supplications,

prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be
made...for kings and all who are in high positions" (1
Timothy 2:1--2).
7.
We believe that it is more difficult to hate
others, even our adversaries and our enemies, when
we are praying for them. We commit to pray for each
other, those with whom we agree and those with
whom we may disagree, so that together we may
strive to be faithful witnesses to our Lord, who
prayed "that they may be one" (John 17:21).
We pledge to God and to each other that we
will lead by example in a country where civil
discourse seems to have broken down. We will work
to model a better way in how we treat each other in
our many faith communities, even across religious
and political lines. We will strive to create in our
congregations safe and sacred spaces for common
prayer and community discussion as we come
together to seek God's will for our nation and our
world."
This is one more very important word regarding the
election...
Peace and joy in Christ!
Pastor Kristin

ZION UCC WORSHIP WAYS

YOUTH YAK
October 16th was Children's Sabbath
Sunday. Youth led Worship, collected offering &
sang. Trinity Alvested danced, Donovan and
Austin Aardema Faigh delivered their thoughts on
Galatians 5:22-23 and Jeremiah 29:11
respectively. This is part of their work toward
delivering their personal testimonies of faith prior to
being confirmed as members of Zion UCC
Mayview. What an incredibly-awesome bunch of
children we have worshiping with us in our faith
community! They are our present joy and our
future hope!
And to our teachers who pray, prepare for and
empower our children with God's Word and hope
in Jesus. They help them to have fun and to
develop their understanding of God's love through
many activities and sharing of their own
faith. Thank you, thank you! You are most
appreciated.
Preparations for our 2016 Christmas Pageant
have begun. There is still time and
encouragement to volunteer to help with the
pageant we love so much. It is different each year
and takes much coordination and willingness of
both parents, volunteers, and of course our
precious children. Let us celebrate Christmas with
the joy of laughter, song, and a message delivered
via a toy store...come be a part!!! Please call
Tresina Alvested or Amy Hoefer if you would like to
help.

What is the Tradition of Totenfest?

Totenfest is a German word that means "Feast of
the Dead" or "Festival for the Dead." It was established in 1816 by Prussian Emperor Fredrick William III as a day to remember that nation's soldiers who had died in the recently concluded
Prussian War. Obviously it became an important
observance in the Evangelical Church in Prussia
(established by the same emperor in 1817) as a
day to remember not only the war dead, but also
church members who had died in the previous
year. It was observed on the last Sunday of the
church year, right before Advent began. This was
also the time of clearing gardens and fields of the
summer's growth in preparation for winter. To this
day, Totenfest in parts of Germany is the day
families visit the graves of loved ones to clean off
the summer flowers and cover the graves with
evergreen boughs for the winter. In Lutheran traditions, "Totensontag" or "Death Sunday" became
the preferred term to Totenfest.

A Service of Remembrance
Please let the office know names and dates of
loved ones who have died since November
2015. They will be remembered on All Souls/
Saints Day/Totenfest, Sunday, November
20. Please feel free to bring a picture or candle to
be lit. A bell will sound for each name remembered.
Let us also remember and celebrate new life
which has been born into our congregation and
community. A chime or different sound of celebration will ring out for each new life from November 2015 to November 2016!

COMMUNITY, COUNTY &

CONFERENCE CLAMOR
Everyone is invited
to attend the Mayview School Carnival
Remembered on

and certificates will
be part of the fun.

MMSCUC
Greetings, brothers and sisters of Zion United
Church of Christ-Mayview! What a joy it has been to
minister with you in the Missouri Mid-South Conference! Your financial generosity has provided wonderful opportunities to love our neighbors throughout
our churches, community, and world! Thank you! I
wanted to celebrate a few of our accomplishments
we've had together in 22016:
National youth Event: We had 57 conference
youth and adults attend the National Youth
Event in Orlando!
My weekly Ginny's Gems YouTube Videos: I
began speaking to you directly via video
each week so that you could see where I
am as well as get to know me, your OCWM
generosity allows me to connect with you
more personally than just written words so
that when I visit you churches, you feel as
though you already know me!
Search and Call Stewards: We developed 8
Search and Call Stewards to serve as liaisons to each church going through the
search and call process on behalf of the
conference. your OCWM generosity allows
for more direct and ongoing conference support to our churches during their search
process!

5 Mission Imperatives: We began publicizing our

5 Mission Imperatives the conference created
on our Vision Report in 2015. Your OCWM
generosity allows us to minister with you in
covenant through each of these 5 areas!
Our Installation Service: I was installed as your
Conference Minister and Teacher with great
celebration. your OCWM generosity provided
the space, bulletins, and service itself for this
significant moment in our ministry together!
First ever African American Clergy of Color Caucus: At our Conference Annual Gathering,
our African American Clergy of Color held the
first caucus to provide support, resources, and
network with each other. your OCWM generosity provided the opportunity for this needed
ministry to develop!
Communications Consultant: We hired the Rev.
Nia Chandler as our Communications Consultant in order to provide the technology and
social media support to our conference's ministries. your OCWM generosity enables the
conference to minister through technology
rather than despite it!
And there is so much more we plan to do in 2017
through your OCWM generosity! Here are a few
things:
Associate Conference Minister for youth ministries: We will hire an ACM for Youth Ministries in 2017 to coordinate conference-wide
youth events as well as provide your youth
leaders and group resources for your local
church ministries.
Conference Resolution to General Synod: Our
conference passed a resolution to be sent to
the General Synod regarding the requirement
that all authorized ministers take racial and
sensitivity training.
As you can see, there is so much energy and ministry
within the Missouri Mid-South Conference! Woohoo!
But we need your support-especially your continued
financial OCWM support. Normally the majority of our
OCWM money comes to us from November to January 15 every year. I want to encourage your church to
GIVE NOW!! We want to be good stewards of your
money so that we can implement your ministries with
you!
Would you consider giving your OCWM money by November 14 rather than waiting until January 15? And
would you consider giving more than you gave last
year to OCWM? We need you to help the Missouri
Mid-South Conference make a difference throughout
God's Beloved Community! Thank you for your consideration!
Blessings,
Ginny Brown-Daniel
Conference Minister

Holiday Memorial Ritual

The lighting of candles during
the holiday season is significant
to both the Jewish and Christian
community. This service is
adaptable to all faiths.
As we light these four candles in honor of you, we
light one for our grief, one for our courage, one for
our memories, and one for our love.
This candle represents our grief. The pain of losing you is intense. It reminds us of the depth of
our love for you.
This candle represents our courage to confront
our sorrow to comfort each other, to change our
lives.
This light is in your memory the times we
laughed, the times we cried, the time we were
angry with each other, the silly thing you did, the
caring and joy you gave us.
This light is the light of love. As we enter this time
of remembering and celebration, day by day we
cherish the special place in our hearts that will
always be reserved for you. We thank you for the
gift your living brought for the lessons you
taught for the time shared for the love you
gave. We love you and celebrate you now and forever.
