Michael McGarghan for State Representative

An Open Letter to My Constituents

October 26, 2016

Im running for the Vermont State House of Representatives, Chittenden District 6-1, representing the
New North End (of Burlington).

Eight months ago I sent a tweet after watching a YouTube video

(www.youtube.com/watch?v=1DS2wXSKF5k) which raised serious concerns about President Obamas
leadership of our country and the damage hes done to our military. Back then I was not a candidate for
political office, but the information shook me and I agreed with Admiral Ace Lyons, Glenn Beck, Mark
Levin and others who have characterized the presidents actions as those of a traitor.
My tweet addressed our US Constitutions prescription of the death penalty for treason. For that
admittedly indelicate message, I have been the subject of several local news stories portraying me as
racist, bigoted and anti-immigrant. I am none of those. Still, Ive become the focus of truly
hateful attacks by people who would deny my right to express an opinion they disagree with. The VT
State police has received a credible death threat against me. My wife has been targeted and my family
disturbed by constant fraudulent phone calls. All because political opponents disagree with my point of
view.

Im not looking for sympathy. Im sharing to demonstrate how politics in Vermont has shifted, as people
believe that the rights of the individual no longer matter. Youll hear about tolerance and diversity, but
it is applied selectively and for the benefit of those groups in favor today. My belief system is not so
inconsistent.

I respect the Constitution of our Country and the State of Vermont. I believe in the laws of the land and,
that laws I disagree with should be changed and not simply disobeyed. I grew up observing the JudeoChristian tradition of morals and ethics. I believe in human rights and the right to life of the unborn. I
served our country as a member of the US military in Afghanistan and with the Vermont National
Guard. I believe that our governments system of checks and balances, the separation of powers, were
established to keep our government on an even keel and our people free. I believe that the media or
press, is essential to preservation of liberty, and long for the return of unbiased reporting.

My tweet touched on Congress failure to act. With the Supreme Court legislating from the bench and
the Chief Executive ruling by executive order, Americans find liberty slipping away.

Vermonters tell me theyre fed up with one party rule. Despite promises to the contrary, both costs
and taxes are going up and we have little to show for it. Jobs are scarce, housing is beyond the reach of
many and affordable healthcare can hardly be found. Who advocates for our elderly, for those on a
fixed income?

I offer my constituents an alternative choice.

Ethics, morality, concern for the needs of each of you.
Im strong on the Second Amendment: Its about deterrence!
Havent liked things as theyve been?
Help me return Vermont to its roots.
Im Michael McGarghan.
