Tati x Neiru
Tati has always been an inspiration to Neirus
standards, goals, and love for nail art. And vice
versa, Tati has also been a point of guidance
and supported Neiru since its birth.
This book is a collaborative project between
both Founder of Neiru, Jasmine Oshima, and
owner of the Tati brand, Takehara Chiharu.
A chance for both parties to showcase the
creative processes and limitless boundaries with
the use of the most coveted nail art gel brush in
Japan - Tati brushes.
Over months of planning, coordinating, and
aligning schedules, our Neiru team set out to
the scenic and historic city of Kyoto where Tati
calls home.
We hope to be able to help communicate the
beauty in craftsmanship and artwork which
Neiru Sensei, Tati, creates whether her own art
to her line of brushes. But more importantly
we hope a book like this can inspire your inner
creativity!

behind the art and brush

Born and raised in Kyoto, Japan, Takehara Chiharu (also known as Sensei Tati)
began her journey with nail art over 12 years ago.
Today, Chiharu-san finds her inspiration from foreign brand fashion magazines
and books to even kids catalogs gleaming with color and beauty. One outfit
from a magazine gives her enough ideas to create nail art, on all 10 different
nails. Seeing inspiration is just the start, its the endless experimenting that
is what helps her to reach a completed design. It can be as small as seeing a
simple motif, then taking that and mixing it or matching it to different colors.
She uses inspirations as her reference, but goes through many many iterations,
and trial and error until shes created something that is her. A single design
can take hours or even days to solidify and its this experimenting that keeps
things so fun for Sensei Tati.
Her experimenting paid off when she became known for her original Camelia
Pucci style art on her blog. With the popularity of her work showcased
online, she hosted a seminar at TAT. This eventually became the start of her
climb to the top of the nail industry, while producing her own brand with her
ever popular and sold out brushes - Tati brushes.

Brushes that enhance the process.
Creating nail art today is no longer out of the ordinary. In fact, in
places like Japan, it has become a staple routine similar to picking
out your daily outfit.
But of course like picking out an outfit, we all look and hope for
the best in quality. And as important as the gels you choose, the
brush plays an important role, which truly enhances the creation
process.
High quality brushes, like Tati brushes, can paint smoothly and
evenly without putting much pressure on them. This not only
makes the process easier, but will save an artist time, shaving off
precious minutes in an appointment.
Tati brushes are handcrafted to meet the demands of time and
quality. There is a reason why Tatis brushes are made with hand
cut nylon, and not with animal. The reason being as it allows the
bristles to have a softer flex - a very special ease to create.

made in the Kumano region of Hiroshima.
Over 170 years ago, the secrets of crafting the highest quality
brushes were passed from Arima to a village in the Kumano region.
The craft of perfecting the traditional Japanese paintbrush soon
made this region famous and led to a booming industry that still

its simply the Ease.

What sets tati brushes apart from all other
brushes is simply its ease.
Its typical that when creating brushes, the words sturdy or
elasticity/flexibility are used to describe good brushes as they
are able to endure and withstand pressure.
However with creating art using gel (with high viscosity), it is
must that gel needs to be applied ever so gently and spread thinly.
And using typical nail art brushes that can withstand pressure,
tends to simply wipe the gel off with every stroke.
Tati brushes were created and are intended instead to caress
the surface of the gel. This way, the bristles spread the gel
without actually touching the nail and is kept separate by the
gel in between. This also means that the Tati brushes can paint
beautifully with only a small amount of gel. Effects and designs
can be lost when applying regular pressure using a normal brush
and its why the Tati brushes are made with the softest bristle tips.
Time spent with your client in the salon or experimenting should
be efficient and done with ease. And thats why so much time has
been spent on designing widths of these brushes, so much as to,
allowing you to cover an entire nail within only 3 strokes.

Pressure can be applied to create a thin and flat brush, while using the
fine tip allows you to paint lines to small flowers.

Perfect for painting the base color. The Rose brush easily allows you to
paint and apply a consistent coat of color right to the edge. A great brush
for tie-dye or marbling art as well. The Rose brush is also good for a bold
floral patterns and soft looking art.

This fine line brush, the Chou Chou, with shorter bristles allows for
creating line art with that requires tight maneuvering and control. This
is the #1 selling brush of the whole set.

With the softest bristle tips of all Tati brushes, this brush is perfect for
creating gradations. Easily blend where colors meet just by caressing
the gel gently without the worry of ruining the gradation. A great brush
suited for a French design, as well.

Printemps, with longer bristles than the Chou Chou brush, is perfect
for painting thin and long lines. Other popular situations for using the
Printemps brush is for glitter lines to detailed character or drawing art.

This 2 way tipped brush can transform into an oval shape when pressed,
and when released has a pointy triangle edge to help shape your designs.
Make the tip oval for small nails or pinky nails, while the pointy tip can be
used to clean/back wipe. Suitable for painting a small area straight and
evenly. Example: camouflage, Pucci, etc.

The newest addition to the Tati brush family. Mimosa was specifically
created for creating Frenchs. But artists tend to also use this for creating
gradations that goes around the nail by applying clear gel and color gel
on each side of the brush.

Start with the Rose brush.

Paint base gel with the Rose

brush. Once cured, apply white
twice and cure.

With some pink gel on the Rose

brush, paint a gentle curve on the
tip of the nail.

Spread the color roughly so you

create different shades that are
dark and light. The Rose brushs
width is perfect for creating this.

Paint orange on the inside of

the pink flower to give it some
variation.

For the second flower, draw a

smaller circle diagonally above
the first one with a lighter pink.

Pay attention to the overall

balance of the design.

Spread the light pink to create

again contrast just like previously
and allow the flowers to connect.

Now paint yellow by the lighter

pink by the cuticle.

Spread yellow and allow for it

to gently blend with the lighter
pink. Notice all the flowers
connect - cure.

Now, change to use the Gris

brush.

With black gel on the Gris brush,

paint the center of the flowers.
Apply pressure and allow the
brushs tip to flatten when you
paint the center.

Create dots of different sizes on

the center of each flower.

Now, change to use the

Chouchou brush.

With some black on the Chouchou

brush draw the outline of the
flowers. Let the brush absorb the
color almost to the base.

Do not aim to outline the flowers

perfectly. Deliberately go out
of line and outline the flowers
roughly. Do not cure yet.

Draw a line starting from a dent

of the petal outline toward the
center of the flower to make it
look like a petal. One line per
petal.

Outline the rest of the flowers

and petals as previously.

Remember to pay attention to

the balance of the entire design.
Then add some dots around the
center of the flowers. Cure.

Apply top gel, cure and youre

done!

Start with the Rose brush.

Apply base gel using the Rose

brush. Once cured, paint an ivory
color twice then cure.

Now, change to use the Blue

brush.

Absorb some gold color on

the Blue brush and dab spots
randomly across the nail

Dont be afraid to paint as if you

are dropping the color on the
nail, using the tip of the Blue
brush.

Study the balance of the entire

design and paint different sizes of
spots.

Cure.

Now, change to use the Gris

brush.

Switch to a brown color.

Outline the gold roughly using

the Gris brush.

Organically wrap the gold in

the brown, but only partial way.
Outlines should be separated into
rough long and short lines with
spaces between.

Thick and thin lines with

gentle curves will bring out the
naturalness of this animal print.

Once youre done, cure.

Apply matte gel, cure and youre

done!

Outline the rest of the gold dobs.

Start with the Rose brush.

Apply base gel with Rose. Once

cured, paint a coat of Pearl White
twice then cure.

Lay the brush down and paint

with a Candy Pink at random,
lightly from top to bottom with a
gentle stroke. Make sure to use a
sheer color here.

Do the same thing with the

Candy Pink diagonally below the
first stroke.

Paint some Baby Pink on the

right corner, keeping the same
type of light and gentle stroke.

Then paint with a Pearl White and

a Pastel Blue gently so you wont
scrape the colors underneath.
Only Tati brushes can really cater
to this technique easily.

Finally, paint Baby Pink by the tip

of the nail. But, do not cure yet.

Now, change to use the

Chouchou brush.

Starting from the center,

move the brush as you were
making a peacock pattern
with the Chouchou brush. Pull
horizontally.

Continue to move the brush so

you create a peacock-like pattern
with a variation of thick and thin
lines.

Try to move the brush diagonally

upwards so you can give the
design a flow as well.

Make sure to continue creating

the peacock lines all the way to
the tip of the nail.

Then fill in the other half of the

nail with the peacock effect.

When you dont clean the white

off the tip of the brush, you
create a more natural peacock
design.

Look at the entire balance of the

design. Once done, cure.

Apply top gel, cure and youre

done!

Draw a half circle on the corner

of the cuticle with a lighter pink.

Like previously, clean the brush

and clean the lines of green and
pink.

Draw another gentle curved

border with the Khaki Green by
the tip of the nail.

Make the line thicker so the

whole design is balanced.

Again, clean the line and cure.

Draw a half circle on the corner

of the tip, overlapping the green
with the Vivid Pink.

If necessary, go over the color a

second time then cure.

Apply a thin layer of non wipe

clear gel on the nail so that you
can work on the surface easily.
Cure.

Start with the Rose brush.

Apply base gel using Rose. Once

cured, paint an ivory color twice
then cure.

Now, change to use the Blue

brush.

With some vivid pink on Blue

brush, draw a thick border with
a curve along with the curve of
the cuticle. Flatten the tip of the
brush with pressure and you can
paint a wider border.

Now, change to use the

Printemps brush.

With white almost all the way to

the base of the brush, draw a thin
outline along the borders. When
using Printemps, always make
sure to let the brush absorb the
color well on the palette.

You do not need to cure until you

are done with the outlines, but
you can go ahead and do so if
necessary.

Go ahead and outline the colors

that are overlapping as well.

Paint vertically so that you can

thicken the border.

Clean the Blue brush with nail

wipe and leave a small amount
of it in the brush. Back-wipe and
clean the curved line as if you are
scraping the line with the tip of
the brush.

Do the same thing on the bottom

of the border using the clean tip
of the brush. Cure.

Draw a half circle from the side,

overlapping the vivid pink with a
Khaki Green.

Stay consistent with speed when

painting the lines, and do not put
too much pressure on the brush.

Continue outlining.

Once youre done with the

outlines, cure.

Apply top gel, cure and youre

done!

Start with the Rose brush.

Apply base gel with the Rose

brush. Once cured, paint white
twice then cure.

Now, change to use the Orange

brush.

With some Navy on the Orange

brush, and the brush turned
sideways, paint with a light
stroke.

Dont paint from one side all

the way to the other. Leave a
contrasted trail of the brush.

Paint a pearl white from the

opposite side of the blue. Note,
you dont need to clean the brush
every time.

With red, paint over the blue. Use

less color so that it doesnt stand
out as the dominant color.

Now, paint sky blue from the

opposite side.

With a pastel yellow, overlap the

sky blue from the opposite side.

Paint a red stroke on the tip of

the nail.

Paint the Sky Blue by the cuticle

as well.

Add some navy around middle of

the nail while studying the entire
balance of the design.

Now, change to use the

Printemps brush.

Put a small amount of Navy on

the Pritnemps brush. Draw a clear
and straight line horizontally.
This will tighten the entire
design.

Do the same thing with Sky Blue

near the middle and red near the
tip, then cure.

Apply top gel, cure and youre

done!

Start with the Rose brush.

Apply base gel with the Rose

brush. Once cured, paint a pearl
white twice then cure.

Now, change to use the Mimosa

brush.

Prepare your colors on your

palette. Put a small amount of
navy on the Mimosa brush. Draw
lines of the same width of the
brush vertically up and down.
Cure.

Draw a line with pearl black,

overlapping half way of the navy
line. Try to paint as lightly as
possible, so you can see the navy
underneath. Cure.

Now, change to use the Gris

brush.

With a Plum color on Gris, draw a

line of the same width vertically.
Overlap the navy line a bit. Cure.

Now, change to use the Mimosa

brush.

With a small amount of Black

Pearl on Mimosa brush draw a
line again, overlapping the first
Pearl Black and Navy just slightly.

By overlapping the colors, youve

now created several contrasting
shades. Cure.

Now, change to use the Gris

brush.

With some Navy on the Gris

brush. Draw a line opposite of the
Plum line. Cure.

Now, change to use the Gris

brush.

Place a small amount of black on

the Mimosa brush. Draw a line
horizontally around the middle of
the nail.

Now, change to use the Gris

brush.

Put a small amount of black on a

point of the Gris brush and draw
a horizontal line by the cuticle.

Now, change to use the Mimosa

brush.

Put a small amount of green on

the Mimosa brush. Draw a line
overlapping the black horizontal
line.

Put a small amount of black on

the cleaned brush. Draw a line,
overlapping the black horizontal
line by the cuticle.

Now, change to use the Gris

brush.

With some Plum color gel on the

Gris brush, draw a line by the tip
of the nail.

Clean the Gris brush, draw a navy

line horizontally, overlapping the
black line half way. Cure.

Then, paint a Pearl Black line

horizontally, overlapping the
plum line. Cure.

Now, change to use the

Printemps brush.

brush, draw a thin line
horizontally by the cuticle.

Then draw 2 thin lines over the

navy vertically.

Draw a thin line overlapping

the thick black line by the tip
horizontally. Cure.

Apply top gel, cure and youre

Start with the Rose brush.

Apply base gel with the Rose

Now, change to use the

Chouchou brush.

Place some black on the

Chouchou brush. Draw a smile
line then cure.

Now, change to use the Gris

brush.

Paint using a Magenta Pink below

the smile line at random with the
Gris brush. Paint all the way to
the edge since the focus will be
on the right side of the nail.

With some Sky Blue gel, paint

below Magenta Pink.

With some Baby Pink, paint in

between the Magenta Pink and
Sky Blue.

Randomly, paint Magenta

Pink and Baby Pink, then cure.
Remember the colors are focused
more on the right side.

Now, change to use the

Chouchou brush.

Get a generous amount of black

on the Chouchou brush. Paint
within the white spots.

Then, guide the black gel to the

smile line. Fill the color in while
keeping the smile line.

Begin to connect all the black.

Frame each color and try to not
to create sharp pointed frames
around the colors. Keep it organic
and round.

Pull the black into the Magenta

Pink and then create a small circle
while studying the the balance of
the entire design.

Shape the black lines so it looks

like the colors are flowing in
from the right to bottom left
diagonally. This gives it an
organic balance. Then Cure.

If needed, adjust the amount

of black so you dont have an
excessive amount. Draw a half
circle lace starting from the
empty smile line.

The rest of the 2 lace lines should

overlap one another.

Draw 2 half circles that cross one

another by the tip of the nail.
Starting from where the second
lace connects, draw another half
circle toward the bottom half of
the nail.

Add half circles at random in

between the laces. Place dots
along the smile line where the
lace lines intersect.

Apply top gel, cure and youre

done!

Start with the Rose brush.

Apply base gel with a round

brush. Once cured, apply pink
twice then cure.

Now, change to use the Mimosa

brush.

Place a small amount of white

from the palette onto the tip
edge of the Mimosa brush.
Turn the longer tip of the brush
upwards and determine the
height of the smile line.

Continue to draw a smile line

as you shift the brush using the
angular edge to help you create
the smile line.

Once you come to the middle, flip

the brush and turn the longer tip
to the opposite side.

Keep drawing the smile line. Do

not cure yet.

Place the tip of the brush right by

the smile line and fill the color in
with white going up and down.

Using the brushs edge, continue

to clean and solidify the smile
line.

Make sure to paint neatly so you

wont have traces of the brush.

Review the height of the smile

line and ensure that both sides
are even. Cure.

Apply top gel, cure and youre

done!

Preparing New Tati Brushes or Previously Stored Tati Brushes

Here is how you can prepare your Tati brush whether it is brand new, or a previously used and stored brush with remaining gel on
it. Please note, for brand new Tati brushes, there is glue on the bristles, please make sure remove it before using.

Put some ethanol in a dappen

dish. Let the brush absorb the
ethnol generously. Just let it soak
and do not push the brush into
the liquid.

Bring soaked brush with glue or

used brush with reamining gel
on to the wax paper/aluminum
foil with a generous amount of
ethanol.

Wash the brush in the puddle

of ethanol, wiping the brush in
a downwards motion, then lift
brush off paper/foil and wipe
again.*

Wipe the excess glue or gel

particles gently on a paper towel,
then repeat again from the
beginning for at least 2 to 3 times
until the brush is clean.

* CAREFUL: Wiping your brush in a horizontal direction perpendicular to the bristles can easily damage brushs bristles!

In Between Color Changes

maintaining the quality

Maintaining the highest quality brushes is vital to
continuing to create your beautiful artwork

When you are about to do a color

change using the same brush,
make sure to clean it properly.

Before dipping it in ethanol, if

the brush has gel on it, wipe the
excess off on a paper towel first.

Then let the brush absorb the

ethanol well.

Bring the soaked brush to a paper

towel and generous amounts of
ethanol along with it and wipe in
a one stroke down motion.

Deep Clean

Here is a process of deep cleaning your brush, but should not be done often and only when all other methods do not clean the brush.

Tati demonstrates how to maintain her brushes and should not

be disregarded. At the same time, its all about getting into the
routine and understanding how to upkeep the finest brushes.

First, wipe the excess gel on a

paper towel. Put a small amount
of clear gel on wax paper or
aluminum foil.

Then begin to swirl and work in

the gel from the tip of the brush.

Do not let the gel get to the

inside root of the bristles or let it
touch the base.

Youll see that the clear gel will

loosen and push out the gel
particles.

NOTE: If the gel residue is very

stubborn, try washing the brush
under hot water. This should
not be done frequently and
only when necessary as this can
shorten the life of your brush.

Then wipe off the clear gel on

the brush with a paper towel.
And soak a generous amount of
ethanol in a dappen dish.

Carefully wipe the brush on

a paper towel in a one stroke
downward motion.

You can repeat the process,

soaking in ethanol and wiping it
off again until all the color has
been removed.

Storing Your Brush

Storing your brush properly will help maintain the quality and prolong the life of your Tati brushes!

Clean the brush by soaking in

ethanol.

Wipe off the excess ethanol and

gel on a paper towel.

Cover only the brushs tip surface

in the clear gel. Do not allow
the clear gel to get inside of the
bristles or let it touch the base.

Place the cap and store the

brush. You can store the brushes
vertically either up or down.

Place a some clear gel on wax

paper or aluminum foil.

Put a small amount of clear gel

on the tip of the brush.
