6. Find the degree 6 Taylor polynomials at x = 0 for (i) ex , (ii) sin x, (iii)
cos x, (iv) ln(1 + x).
Part II Problems to be Submitted
Submit your solutions of the following questions via the MOODLE assignment drop box. Please follow the instructions there.
7. We have seen that (f + g) is continuous at x = c whenever both f and
g are. Determine whether the following statements are true or false.
Justify your answers.
(a) If f is continuous at x = c but g is discontinuous there, then (f +g)
is discontinuous at x = c.
(b) If both f and g are discontinuous at x = c, then (f + g) is discontinuous at x = c.
8. Let

x+9

3x

5
if 0 < x < 2;

f (x) = 2
if x = 2;

11 + 8x x
if 2 < x 5;

4
if x > 5.

Discuss the continuity of f at x = 0, 2, and 5.

(b) Show that x = 0 and x =

m
m+1

are the only two critical points of

f (x).
(c) Suppose m is odd. Classify the two critical points. Find also
points of inflection.
11. Let f (x) = sin x x cos x, 0 x . Find the absolute maximum and
the absolute minimum of f . Hence, or otherwise, determine the range
of f . Finally, determine whether f has an inverse or not. You need not
find the formula of the inverse function if exists.
12. Let f (x) = (x + 2)e1/x .
(a) What is the natural domain of f ? Find f and f .
(b) Determine the intervals on which f is increasing, as well as the
intervals on which f is decreasing. Hence, locate all the local
extrema.
(c) Determine the intervals on which f is concave up, as well as the
intervals on which f is concave down. Hence, locate all the points
of inflection.
(d) Determine all the asymptotes (vertical and horizontal/oblique) to
the graph of f , if any.
(e) Sketch the graph of f .
13. (Defer to Assignment 4) Find the degree 2 Taylor polynomials P2 (x)

(b) cos x at a = /4
