QUESTION 1 [15 marks]

a) Is it true that it takes more energy to vaporize 1 kg of saturated liquid water at 100oC than
it would at 120oC?
[2 marks]
b) In ideal gas analysis, what is the difference between R and Ru? How are these two
c)

related?
[2 marks]
Is it true that we could always consider a gas with low pressure (PR<<1) an ideal gas

regardless of its temperature?

[2 marks]
d) Determine the specific volume of superheated water vapour at 10 MPa and 350oC, using:
(also find out the error involved in (ii) and (iii))

QUESTION 2 [15 marks]

(a)

List four (4) components of internal energy of a system.

[2 marks]

(b)

Air is contained in a piston-cylinder device with pressure of 2 MPa and temperature

of 350C. The initial mass of the air is 0.15 kg. The air is first expanded isothermally
to 500kPa, then compressed polytropically with a polytropic constant of 1.2 to the
initial pressure, and finally compressed at constant pressure to the initial state.
i.

Evaluate the volume of air at each state, in m3.

[5 marks]

ii.

Determine the work for each process.

[6 marks]

iii.

Sketch the process in a P-V diagram.

QUESTION 3 [20 marks]

A two-phase liquid vapour mixture of water with an initial quality of 25% is contained in a
piston-cylinder assembly as shown in Figure 1. The surrounding pressure can be
approximated to 1 bar. The mass of the piston is 80 kg and its diameter is 10 cm. Water is
slowly heated until the piston hits the stops. Heat transfer to the water continues until its
pressure is 3 bar. Assuming frictionless piston-cylinder device and take g = 9.81 m/s 2:
(a) What is the initial pressure and temperature of water?
[5 marks]
(b) What is the initial specific volume of water (Note: If you fail to answer part a,
assume initial pressure to be 200 kPa for the remaining questions).

[2

marks]
(c) Calculate the mass of water inside the piston-cylinder device.
[3 marks]
(d) Determine the phase and specific volume of water when the piston first hits the stop?
(e) Determine the total amount of heat transfer.
