ELECTRICITY AND CIRCUITS

TEXTBOOK QUESTIONS AND THEIR ANSWERS

Q.1. Fill in the blanks :
(a)

A device that is used to break an electric circuit is

called ________.

(b)

An electric cell has __________ terminals.

Ans. (a) Switch (b) two.

Q.2. Mark True or False for following statements :
(a)

Electric current can flow through metals.

(b)

Instead of metal wires, a jute string can be used to

make a circuit.

(c)

Electric current can pass through a sheet of

thermocol.

Ans. (a) True

Q.3.

Edulabz International

Explain why the bulb would not glow in the

arrangement shown in figure below.

Ans.

The bulb would not glow in the above arrangement

because the electric circuit is not complete for
electricity to pass between the two terminals of the
cell. The handle of the screw driver is made of wood
which is an insulator. So, electric current does not
flow through it and the circuit becomes incomplete.

Q.4.

Complete the drawing shown in figure below of

Textbook to indicate where the free ends of the
two wires should be joined to make the bulb glow.

One end of the wire is joined to the positive terminal

of the cell. The other end of the wire is joined to the
(metallic) base of the bulb.

Q.5.

What is the purpose of using an electric switch ?

Name some electric gadgets which use switches.

Ans.

A switch is simple device that either breaks the

circuit or completes it.
Some of the electrical gadgets that have switches
built into them are electric bulb, electric tube,
electric bell, television, electric heater, geyser,
electric fan, air cooler, oven, electric stove etc.

Q.6.

Would the bulb glow after completing the circuit

shown in Figure below if instead of safety pin we
use an eraser ?

Ans.

No, the bulb will not glow. This is because rubber is

an insulator and does not allow electric current to
pass through it. So the circuit remains incomplete

and electric current does not get a complete path to

flow.
Q.7.

Would the bulb glow in the circuit shown in

Figure below of Textbook ?

Ans.

No, the bulb will not glow. It is because the two

terminals of the battery are connected to the same
terminal of the bulb.

Q.8.

Using the conduction tester on an object it was

found that the bulb begins to glow. Is that object
a conductor or an insulator ? Explain.

Ans.

The object is a conductor of electricity because it

allows the current to pass through it. An insulator
does not allow the current to pass through it.

Q.9.

Why should an electrician use rubber gloves

while repairing an electric switch at your home ?
Explain.

Ans.

Edulabz International

While repairing an electric switch, an electrician

uses rubber gloves because rubber is a bad conductor
of electricity. It acts as an insulator. It does not allow
electricity to pass through it and so, electrician is
prevented from getting any shock of electric current.

Q.10.

The handles of the tools like screwdrivers and

pliers used by electricians for repair work usually
have plastic or rubber covers on them. Can you
explain why ?

Ans.

It is because plastic and rubber, both are bad

conductors of electricity. These materials act as
insulators and do not allow the current to pass
through them.
