CASE STUDIES
PURPOSE OF CASE STUDIES
Case study research excels at bringing us to an understanding of a complex issue or object and
can extend experience or add strength to what is already known through previous research. Case
studies emphasize detailed contextual analysis of a limited number of events or conditions and
their relationships. Architects and designers have used the case study research method for many
years across a variety of disciplines.
CASE STUDIES
ISLAMABAD CLUB Islamabad Club is an exclusive club whose membership comprises
government officials, diplomats and the elite of Islamabad. Spread over an area of 346 acres, the
club is located in the vicinity of Rawal Lake. The diplomatic enclave and government offices are
nearby.
History of Club The sponsors decided to register the Club as a company to be called the The
Islamabad Club. The Company was registered on 22nd February 1968, as a limited company
and was incorporated under the Companies Act of 1963. An area of 244.8 acres of land was
leased to the Club by Capital Development Authority for construction of the Club House, an
eighteen hole Golf Course and other sports facilities. In 2008, an additional 102 acres were
leased to the club for development of an additional nine holes for the golf course and a polo

MAIN BUILDING The main club building houses the Reception, Lobby, Main Lounge, Coffee
Shop, Main Dining Hall, two Private Dining Rooms, Multipurpose Hall and a multipurpose
Auditorium on the ground floor. The basement houses the Bridge Room, Billiard Room, Library,
Banquet Room, Family Dining Hall and a Spacious Lawn. There are thirty eight fully furnished
guest rooms on the first and second floors. The guest rooms have a full view of the beautiful
surroundings.
SPORTS FACILITIES Club has a full range of sport facilities including Tennis courts, outdoor
and indoor swimming pools, state of the art gymnasium, squash courts, badminton courts, a
riding club, and an eighteen hole golf course.
POOLSIDE BUILDING The poolside building; surrounded by the golf course, the swimming

pool, the dry garden and the back lawn; houses the club caf, two conference rooms and a
business center.
SHOPPING ARCADE Shopping arcade consists of a pastry shop, barbershop, ladies beauty
salon and bookstore.
OTHERS The club has a spacious car parking area where the lanes and bays have been
numbered for easy location. The cars are parked at owners risk. However, a security guard is
always on duty. Valet service is available.
GYMNASIUM The gymnasium has been equipped by Techno Gym and has the latest fitness
equipments. Highly trained fitness trainers are available. Training programs are developed
keeping in view the specific requirements of members. The gymnasium contains:
MAIN GYM Main gym is equipped with the following machines, Cardio Zone: Treadmills,
Elliptical, Waves, Stationary Bikes, Hand Bike. Strength Line (Upper and lower body): Chest
Press, Pectoral, Shoulder Press, Lat Machine, Leg Press, Leg Extension, Leg Curl, Adductor,
Abductor, Lower Back Abdominal & Core: Total Abdominal, Rotary Torso, Abdominal Crunch
Mats & Floor Exercises: Includes mats, body stretches and flexibility exercises with qualified
Trainers.
KINESIS ROOM Kinesis is a new exercise system introduced for the first time in Pakistan in
Islamabad Club, which allows us to move in total freedom with three-dimensional resistance to
the force of gravity, as well as strengthens and tones body muscles, and improves body stability,
flexibility, self-perception and motor skills. Its an Integrated movement training, not isolated
muscle training, because every exercise works multiple muscles at the same time.
FREE WIEGHT ROOM Free weight room is equipped with the most advanced machines and
free weights, which meet the requirements of those, would like to exercise with high intensity
workouts. The free weight room is equipped with the following machines.

STEAM BATH A six seater steam bath to relax the body and unwind the mind.
CHANGING ROOM & SHOWER

INDOOR SWIMMING AREA The state of the art covered pool has following specs: Pool
Depth 6 feet, Shallow 3.5 feet, Length 25 meters, and Width 14.5 meters. The pool water is
treated in order to keep the water hygienically pure and hazard free. The pool is open throughout
the year and uniform water temperature is maintained to meet the comfort level of the members.
The pool building is centrally cooled & heated. A pavilion of two hundred sitting capacity is also
available in the covered pool, which helps to accommodate members and guests during
swimming Gala and other events. Professional life guards both ladies and gents are available.
Coaching facility is also available for members.
OUTDOOR SWIMMING AREA New fifty meter outdoor pool, service building, separate
diving pool, two small pools and a play area for children under 12 years of age are new additions
in club. The new open pool has following specs: - Pool Depth Deep end: 7 feet Shallow end:
4.25 feet Length : 50 meters Width : 21 meters A pavilion with a capacity for 250 people is
available to facilitate members and guests specifically during events like Swimming Gala etc.
Coaching facility is also available for members and their children. The popular club caf is also
adjacent to the new pool.
RIDING The riding section is located a little further away from the main club towards the Rawal
Dam. The total area comprises ten acres having 40 stables and 3 grounds and well planted
surroundings. Members can hire horses and enjoy riding in the clubs riding area or enjoy a ride
out. Lessons can also be arranged for learners. Non-members can also avail horse-riding facility.
Members have the privilege to keep their horses in the stables of the riding section subject to
availability; at fixed monthly charges.
SQUASH A separate building houses, all weather squash courts which are well maintained.
Three of the courts have glass back walls. Three courts are equipped with Air-conditioning
facility. Squash complex has a calm and quiet lounge. Experienced coaches are available.
Regular tournaments are held which are open to all members.
TENNIS The club has nine clay and one synthetic court and a tennis pavilion. Four of the courts
have floodlights, which can be used after sunset by prior booking. One of the courts is dedicated
for training purpose where an experienced trainer is available to provide coaching to new
players. An experienced marker is also available. After the game, players can relax in the tennis
lounge. Various local, national and international events have been held here.
BILLIARD The billiard room has two billiard tables of regular size

CARD ROOM The bridge room, with 12 tables is located in an exclusive area of the club to
provide an excellent Bridge Playing environment. One round table for Kantoori is also available.
A computer based auto cards shuffling machine is available.National and International
tournaments have been held in the card room
GOLF The club has lush green eighteen holes golf course, practice driving range and practice
putting green. Members can buy golf kits and other accessories from the pro shop. Experienced
coaches are available. The club has hosted a number of national tournaments. Members can relax
in the luxurious clubhouse after a game of golf.
BADMINTON A new badminton hall is under construction at the club.
FUN AND RECREATION
AUDITORIUM The club has a multipurpose centrally air-conditioned auditorium with 345
seats. It is equipped with projection and sound system and a cinema screen; and can be booked
by members for musical shows, plays, private movie show, seminars, launching ceremonies, etc.
Sunday movies for members are a year round feature.
TOMBOLA Club arranges Tombola on regular basis. Bi weekly Tombola is held in the Family
Hall on Monday and Thursday evenings. Grand Tombola is arranged twice a year in the back
lawn of the club. Grand Tombola is one of the large events on the club calendar and is attended
by a large number of members and their families.
OTHER FUN AND RECREATIONAL FACILITIES The club occasionally arranges concerts
for its members.
FOOD AREA
THE CLUB CAF Located adjacent to the swimming pool and close to the lush green back
lawns with an excellent view of the Golf Course, the Club Caf offers a variety of pizzas, snacks,
ice creams, salads & beverages. The caf has indoor seating for 60 guests and an outdoor deck
with a seating capacity of 48 guests.
HAROKA-THE COFFEE SHOP Located adjacent to the main lobby, The Jharoka Coffee
Shop offers an exclusive a la carte menu and is open throughout the day. The outlet also hosts
seasonal food festivals

DARBAR HALL - THE MAIN DINING HALL Located adjacent to the main lobby, the
Darbar Hall is the formal dining room of the club. An elaborate buffet is served at lunchtime,

while an a la carte menu is offered at dinner. Two private dining rooms are also available for
members.

DEWAN-E-KHAS Located adjacent to the main lobby, the Dewan-e- Khas is the formal lounge,
with seating capacity for 49 guests.
LOBBY LOUNGE Located in the main lobby, the TV Lounge is the perfect place for relaxation.
The TV Lounge also offers light snacks, Juices, Soft Drinks and Ice Creams throughout the day.
FAMILY HALL The Family Hall is located on the lower ground floor, where children are
allowed. It offers an enticing view of the lush green lawns and the Golf Course. The Family Hall
offers Pakistani, Continental and Chinese cuisine and daily Hi-Tea Buffet. Take away orders are
also placed here. Slippers and open chappal are not allowed inside the Family Hall.

MEETING & BANQUET HALL
CONFERENCE ROOM 1 Its an oval shape format, which can accommodate 16-18 persons.
Its an ideal place for corporate style board meetings, conferences and professional presentations.
CONFERENCE ROOM 2 Its a square shape format, with sitting arrangement for 12 persons.
Its an ideal place for panel discussions.
BUSINESS CENTER Business center having state of the art facilities is available just adjacent
to conference rooms. Its an added attraction for conferences, which can facilitate the users to
compile their notes using photocopier, fax, high speed internet, CD/DVD writing, scanning,
typing and printing.
MULTIPURPOSE HALL Situated next to the Clubs Auditorium, the Multipurpose Hall is a
modern addition to the Clubs existing facilities to cater to large functions. The outlet caters for
Conferences / Meetings / Shows / Private Dinners / Lunches and social gatherings. The
Multipurpose Hall can accommodate 160 to 180 persons (sit-down) and up-to 300 persons
(standing buffet). Multimedia, Screens, Overhead projector, Delegate Mikes and other required
Audio-Visual Equipment can be provided.
BANQUET ROOM Its a square shape format, with sitting arrangement for 12 persons. Its an
ideal place for panel discussions.
GOLF CLUB LOUNGE The golf club lounge can be used for private dinners for up to 100
guestsIslamabad Club offers a variety of guestrooms including single/double rooms, suites and

deluxe suites. All guestrooms are comfortable in size and tastefully decorated with picturesque
view of lush green lawns of Islamabad Club and Golf Course. They are equipped with all modern
amenities like entertainment channels on fiber optics, hot & cold bath, Internet, round the clock

BUSINESSCENTER Islamabad club provides state of the art facilities in calm and quite
environment of business center. Nine members at a time can use Internet facility in semi-private
cabins. Dedicated desk for members R&D and study purpose also placed in business center,
where they can use their laptop.
LIBRARY Islamabad Club library is one of the best libraries in Islamabad comprising a number
of books on various subjects of interests. The total collection of books is more than seven
thousand with more than four hundred DVDs of classical and academy award winning movies.
DVD section also includes PTV classical dramas and Pakistani classical movies. Library has also
subscribed to 34 national and international periodicals/magazines and 10 national and
international newspapers. The library uses Dewey decimal classification system for organizing
its information resources. The library has also developed a computerized bibliographic database
of its books.
SHOPPING ARCADE Club has a small and beautiful shopping arcade building adjacent to
parking area I. We have provided following services in the shopping arcade:
PASTRY SHOP: It serves variety of Cakes, Baked Items, Breads, Pizzas, Variety of Cookies,
Pies, Cold Drinks and Pack Juices. Prior orders for the listed items on special occasions are
welcomed.

BOOKSHOP
Club has sublet this outlet to Mr. Books, a most reputable name in town. Bookshop has a variety
of items like literatures, Novels, Magazine/journals, Stationary, digital items etc.
BARBERSHOP A barber shop for the members.
ANALYSIS & CONCLUSIONS
It will be very helpful in design stage. The questions have been asked from different thought of
people who do use this club frequently. Mostly people are from high diplomats, executive and
foreigners. Islamabad club building not considered being a landmark building. Islamabad is
placed on hilly areas so the design of Islamabad club is contoured base. Golf area and building is
designed on hilly surface. It gives an impact of natural topography. Use of existing trees and
green areas give ecofriendly atmosphere.
The entrance of the main club building is quite welcoming
There are a proper parking spaces, entry system and exits based on traditional planning.
The new complex has no relationship with the design elements of the old one.
There are no hard courts for tennis
Some of the coffee bars are too far away from the main kitchen which results in difficulty of
providing the services.
The golf course boundary has been marked with iron grill which is not pleasing at all
Best thing is that there are lawns on all sides of the club building which gives better view from
inside

Gymkhana attracts the elite of the Lahores society. It prides itself on quality as well as diversity
of the membership which includes business people, the literati, renowned journalists, celebrated
artists, honorable members of the judiciary, civil and armed services and of courseworld class
sportspeople. Lahore Gymkhana is a natural extension of the traditionally open hearted Lahori

OBSERVATIONS & CONCLUSIONS Its recognized by the Golf course but the building has
not been designed in a way so as to exploit the views of the lush green views. Its being
constructed with the passage of time, no as such proper planning and designing to fulfill the
essence of the club. Due to series of extensions different activities have been assigned to areas

which are not suitable for such activities e.g. library, gym and reading room are in the basement
where there is no natural light and fresh air ventilation. The new swimming complex is built far
away from the old swimming pool, which has been renovated. According to my research aspects
what I have studied, this club is under many design problems. Interactive places such as
courtyard are of extreme importance. All types of users should get direct access to all desired
areas. Parking should be provided for 800 cars according to the members. There is no proper
Pedestrian system is designed. Some activities are ignorant from other spaces. They have not
connected according to planning. Whenever there is a movie session, club has no proper space to
accommodate people, in fact they arrange in open areas. Library and newspaper reading room
have not placed properly. Many serious issues with basic architecture should be solving in
upcoming design strategies.

CASE STUDY
ROYAL PALM GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB Excellence in Sports, recreational and social
activities This club is located on the site of the former Pakistans railways Golf Club which was
founded in 1927.Today completely redesigned and landscaped, the royal palm hardly resemble to
its past. All the facilities were to its members in October 2003, now days memberships are closed
due to not enough accommodations. The Royal palm is now emerging as a family oriented club,
where a family friendly atmosphere is being created.

The 72 par 18-hole standard course has been designed to offer a challenging game amongst
stately old trees, eight beautiful lakes and rolling fairways. Specially designed drainage ensures
that play can be resumed soon after the rain. An adequately equipped pro shop offers rentals,
Equipment, footwear and even apparel for unprepared.
-Proper lockers and changing rooms have been provided for each member.
CLUB HOUSE The main club house building comprises of all the recreational facilities for all
age groups and has been designed to evoke a Mediterranean lifestyle. It has four levels with large

areas for family entertainment. Each floor has a perfect view of the fairways of the golf course.

OBSERVATIONS & CONCLUSIONS
Royal palm is more properly designed as compared to Gym khana because it designed with
planning.
There is a proper zoning of spaces.
Adequate parking areas are available in front of every building
All buildings have very well emphasized entrances, which is not a problematic issue in this
club.
All the activities, administration, lounges and the dining halls all are in the separate zones.
There are proper pedestrian paths
Good view and vistas are provided to all the activities
All the facilities have a proper relationship with each other
The wedding spaces are not placed on the ground floor which is not good at all, should be
placed in ground area so that it could be convenient for visitor
Only one lift is provided for the use of the banquet hall which accommodates up to 1000
people which is not sufficient according today. The location of the wedding hall is very central
which disturbs the rest of the club.
