Saturday: Luna – an example of an invocation during the hours between dusk and dawn
As with any other ritual, it is extremely important to time the ritual properly. First, if the invocation
is for a benefic or neutral purpose -- a ritual of increase -- then the Moon should be waxing; if it is for a
malefic purpose or should otherwise be classified as a ritual of decrease, the Moon should be waning.
This is especially true for an invocation of Luna.
Second, if it is possible, the Sun, Moon, and/or the Planet itself should be in a Sign in which the
Planet to be invoked is strong; the best for this purpose are the Planet’s esoteric rulerships. Luna’s
esoteric rulerships are Pisces and Gemini; Her exaltations, next best, are Aries and Taurus; and Her
mundane rulerships are Cancer and Leo. If this isn’t possible, an alternative is to have the Planet in the
Houses ruled by those Signs; for Luna, these are respectively the First, Second, Third, Fourth, Fifth and
Twelfth Houses.
Third, in the case of the Outer Planets, Saturn through Pluto, it is desirable to have the Sun, Moon,
and/or Planet to be invoked in an Element which that Planet rules. In this case, that of Luna, no Outer
Planets are involved, unless by chance Luna is in conjunction with one of them at the time of the
performance of the ritual, but Luna is a traditional ruler of Water, so Water Signs, especially Pisces and
Cancer, are excellent here.
Fourth, the day or night of the week should always be the one ruled by the Planet involved. Luna
rules the daylight hours of Monday and Saturday night.
Finally, the hour of the day or night for the ritual should always be one ruled by the Planet. Luna
rules the first, eighth, and (in high latitudes) fifteenth hours (60-minute periods) after dawn of Her day,
Monday, and the third, tenth, and (in high latitudes) the seventeenth hour (after sunset) of Her night,
Saturday. However, under certain circumstances, this last rule has an alternative: Certain of the Planets
also rule the four Angles of the horoscope. These are the Ascendant, or Dawn, ruled by the Sun and
Pluto; the Zenith, ruled by the Sun and Saturn; the Descendant, or Sunset, ruled by Saturn and Uranus;
and the Nadir, or Midnight, ruled by Saturn, Neptune, Pluto, and Luna. Midnight is especially
appropriate for invocations of Luna, just as the Zenith is for invocations of Sol, and the Nadir is for Pluto;
so midnight on Saturday night is a perfectly acceptable timing for invoking Luna. (This, of course, refers
to local midnight and noon, which may differ considerably from “official” or clock time, depending upon
the locality and time of year. Find out what time zone you’re in, then subtract four minutes for every
degree west of the official meridian of your time zone, or add four minutes for every degree east of it, of
the location of your ritual. A good atlas can give you the longitude of that location to the nearest 15’ of
arc or so. There are also a number of software programs that can calculate that for you, often within a
few seconds of arc.)

and Divine Name ShaDdaI Al ChAI, whereby Thou art known especially in that Sphere of
Influence we call Yesod, Foundation, and that Path known as Gimel, the Camel of Night,
Realm of Levanah, the Dominions of Yesod, I beseech Thee to grant unto me, Thy servant,
priest, and devotee [your Magickal Name], and any others assembled here, the petitions
which [I/we] are about to present unto Thee, in order that the Great Work shall thereby be

Furthermore, direct Thine Angel, Gabriel, and Thine Angelic Choir, the Kerubim, to do all
within Their dominion to cause this Working and the petitions herein presented to come to
fruition to the perfect satisfaction of all those here assembled.
May the rulers of Yesod, the powerful Princes Malkah Be-Tharshisim ve-ad Be-Ruachoth
Shechalim, whose Sign is
by the gracious permission of the Infinite Supreme, cause the petitions here presented to be
fulfilled perfectly, in order that their purposes, in accord with the Wills of those presenting
them here to the Divine Presence ShaDdaI AL ChaI, be likewise satisfied., and so that the
Great Work shall thereby be accomplished!
In the name ShaDdaI AL ChaI, the Priestess of the Silver Star, Shekinah, Sabbath Queen, ,
I summon ye, thou Great King of the Works of Luna, Arcan, and Thy Ministers, Bilet,

thee:
[Quote the speech of Charles Phinney, The Circus of Dr. Lao, the prophecies of Apollonius of Tyana to
