there are many situations that occur everyday, that involve the concept of moments. A seesaw has a pivot in the middle, and if the 2 people on either side have an equal weight and are sitting an equal distance from the seesaw pivot the seesaw will be balanced. This happens because the total clockwise moment is balanced by the total anticlockwise moment. Also, cranes that lift heavy building materials have a horizontal arm called the jib, which acts as the lever. Concrete blocks and other materials are placed at the end of the jib in order to prevent the crane from toppling over. They act as a counterweight at the end of the jib. Moreover, when removing a tin lid, you have to apply more force and keep a big distance away from the tin, to create a bigger moment and open the tin easily. The same concept applies if youre using a hammer to remove a nail from the wood. Finally, if youre cutting a piece of string with scissors, you have to use more effort (force)
and distance from the pivot of the scissors;
therefore you can cut the string quicker and much easier.
