Golden couple... Laura Trott and Jason Kenny show off their Rio 2016 gold medal haul yesterday
By David Pilditch
absolutely loved it. Jason added: We
never thought in a million years wed
get anywhere near it here and then
weve turned up and done the business
again which is just incredible.
Laura leapt to her sisters defence
yesterday after her sibling was targeted by internet trolls who branded
her bitter and jealous.
Emma Trott, 26, was blasted for a
lack of enthusiasm at her sisters
success after appearing on ITVs Good
Morning Britain.
She said she was not able to watch
Laura race because she was working
and also appeared to complain about
the amount of time she was
spending talking about her
sisters Olympic glory.
But Laura hit back:
Reading some nasty
messages
re
my
sister. Bitter? Jealous? If only you
people knew.
She is one of
my biggest supporters. She was
my idol growing
up. Yes, she was
working while I
raced. Im sure a lot
of people who care
about me were. I love
my sister to the moon.
Meanwhile, the wife of
Olympic gold medallist and
commentator Chris Boardman has
defended her husband after claims he
made a sexist comment during the TV
cycling coverage.
As Jason and Laura embraced,
Boardman said: Shes doing the emotion for both of them really. Hes looking at her going whats for tea?
Twitter users attacked the commentator for his casual sexism, but wife
Sally tweeted: As his wife, I can tell
you he never asks me to make tea.
Just to make it clear, Chris is a
feminist. We are all on the same side.

It is also important to realise that
80 per cent of these EU migrants are in
lower- skilled employment.
Migration into lower-skilled work is not
a particular benefit to the UK economy.
Former Labour welfare minister Frank
Field, joint chairman of the Commons
cross-party group on Balanced Migration,
said: Todays figures on the surge of eastern European migration show how crucial
it is that one aspect of Brexits success
must be the control of our borders.
This can best be done by introducing a
points system and accompanying this with
active measures to build up the skill levels
of our existing labour force.
It is possible now to acquire basic skills
such as brick-laying and carpentry from
bespoke 12-week training schemes. All new
public investment schemes should require
using such schemes so that, over time, skill
levels in the economy are raised.
This would allow us to restrict access to
our labour market through a robust points
system in a way that doesnt harm British
industry through skill shortages.

working in the UK has risen from 966,000 in
1997 to 3.45million.

She warned gusts could top 55mph
in exposed regions, whipping up with
20ft waves.
She said: A spell of unseasonably
strong south-westerly winds, accompanied by heavy, blustery showers, is
expected to develop across the South
later on Friday but peaking during
Saturday daytime.
Additionally the strongest winds
will lead to large waves round exposed

Gusts of up to 45mph inland, and
45 to 55mph along exposed coastlines,

These may lead to disruption to

THE most popular

survey has revealed.
In a poll of 2,000 men
by a dating website for
married people,
34 per cent said they

cover for an affair.
Other popular
excuses, according to

included 27 per cent who

meeting and 13 per cent
who said they were at
the pub with mates.
Five per cent said they

four per cent even

Christian Grant from

By Jan Disley
A WOMAN of 77 bravely battled a
gang of muggers triying to snatch
her money at a cashpoint.
Winifred Peel grabbed one of the
robbers by the collar and rammed
his head into the cash machine
three times before the gang fled.
The three young men stole 200
from Winifred outside the bank.
But they were arrested after CCTV
images were circulated.
Despite her heroics, Winifred said
the terrifying ordeal had changed
my life.
Romanians Felix Stoica, 19, Piper
Dumitru and Florin Geblescu, both
18, who live in Manchester, were all
sent to a young offender institution
this week after admitting robbery.
Liverpool Crown Court heard they
drove to leafy village Bromborough,
in Wirral, in April on the lookout for
easy targets.
Prosecutor William Beardmore
said Winifred had put her bank card
into the cashpoint outside HSBC in
Bromborough Village Road and
entered her PIN number when the
gang struck.
He said: The complainant became
aware of somebody standing to her
right.
He pushed against her and she
recognised him as a male she had
seen exiting Barclays bank earlier.
She then became aware of a

Having made a home in Britain and
contributed to our society they deserve
to have their rights protected. No
matter what happens as we disentangle
ourselves from the EU they must be
guaranteed the chance to stay.
However it remains
the case that we
cannot accept a never-ending flow of
new arrivals. The latest statistics
demonstrate the importance of winning
back our right to control our borders
during the Brexit negotiations.
Restrictions on European migrants
will not be enough though. People from
around the world are still being allowed
to flock here with far too little done
during David Camerons years in charge
to restrict the numbers coming.
Theresa May must demonstrate a firm
commitment to border controls and
ensure the immigration figures are
reduced to a sensible and sustainable
level. After years of talk about cutting
net immigration to the tens of
thousands we need a prime minister
who is prepared to make it happen.

rock plunge just
misses bathers at
TV drama beach
By Robert Walmsley
A HUGE rock fall narrowly misses scores of
sunbathers on the beach made famous in ITV
crime drama Broadchurch.
Coastguards yesterday warned people to
stay away from the cliff at West Bay in Dorset,
part of which collapsed without warning on
Tuesday sending huge boulders crashing to
the beach below.
Several people dashed out of the way as the
collapse (circled) sent plumes of brown dust
into the air and left a large pile of rocks at the
foot of the 200ft sandstone cliffs. It is thought
about 400 tons fell.
Six fire engines, two coastguard crews and
several police cars went to the scene but no
one was injured in the landslip.
Peter Davies, of the Maritime and
Coastguard Agency, said: The incident could
have had a very different outcome, and
fortunately no one was hurt.
The fall happened on the same stretch of
beach where Charlotte Blackman, 22, was
crushed to death by a similar rock fall in 2012.

Unqualified scholar had
no place to pontificate
SIX years ago journalist Mehdi
Hasan wrote this about Anjem
Choudary: Is Choudary an Islamic
scholar whose views merit
attention or consideration? No.
Has he studied under leading
Islamic scholars? Nope. Does he
have any Islamic qualifications or
credentials? None whatsoever. So
what gives him the right to
pontificate on Islam, British
Muslims or the hellfire? Or
proclaim himself a sharia judge?
Mehdi added that Choudary was
as unrepresentative of British
Muslim opinion, as he is of British
anti-war opinion.
Choudarys greatest crime is
convincing many that his sick views
are representative of the majority
of UK Muslims, they are not.
Once a cleric, he tried to shame
and brainwash ordinary believers
into feeling like bad Muslims if they
were not taking up the fight
against the infidels. They should
never forgive him for that.
He encouraged impressionable
and immature disciples to flee to
Isis and take up arms against their
own country. Something he would
never do himself, of course. The
man is a complete coward.

WERVING between
black, rolling thunder
clouds, pilot Becki
Dillingham takes a deep
breath and tries to steer
her plane to safety. She
knows that one wrong move could
prove fatal. Hurtling through the
wind and rain, she begins to
wonder why she didnt become an
accountant instead.
Becki works as a bush pilot in
Madagascar, an island just off the
south-east coast of Africa, and
thanks to her career choice she is
no stranger to hair-raising
moments.
I do think you have to be a bit
mad to do my job, laughs Becki.
At 31 she is one of just three
female Mission Aviation
Fellowship (MAF) bush pilots.
As cars are a rarity on the island
the humanitarian organisation
arranges flights for those in need
in rural Madagascar, shortening
journeys that would otherwise
take days.
Her duties range from flying
people from remote villages to and
from hospital to receive life-saving
medical treatment, to escorting
missionaries and government
figures around the country.
Beckis plane is a far cry from
that of commercial pilots, who
have all the top technology at
their fingertips.
Instead she flies a modest craft
that can hold up to four people
and a small amount of supplies.
Flying solo with no air traffic
control for support, she doesnt
even receive weather warnings.
Once I leave the capital
Antananarivo I rely on my eyes to
look out for storms. When I do
come across fog or a storm, I just
have to find a safe path around it,
says Becki, who first dreamed of
becoming a pilot aged nine after
her parents bought her a flying
lesson for her birthday.
I caught the bug there and
then and asked for lessons every
Christmas until I was old enough
to pay for them myself.
At 17 she flew alone for the first
time. Ill never forget that feeling.
I knew how to fly but up there
alone, I suddenly thought to
myself, Oh, wow, I have to land
this thing, she says.

Its time to
I
f you suffer from thinning hair,
you are not alone. Its
estimated that six million
women in the UK are affected
by limp and lifeless locks, with
more than half of those over 50
complaining of thinning or
patchiness.
Recent research also reveals that
53 per cent of women think that their
hair is one of their most important
features and worry that thinning
tresses make them look older.
Hair loss is far from an exclusively
male problem. Women have a 40 per
cent chance of developing thinning
hair and, as is the case for men,
genetics are the main culprit.
However there are many other
factors that affect hair health
including the menopause, stress,
a poor diet and damage to the
follicles from excessive styling or
harsh chemical treatments.
Most people over 35 have a few
strands of grey and after 40 the hair
shaft thins leading to a noticeable
reduction in volume. In addition, hair
becomes less flexible and the scalp
produces less oil which can lead to
dryness.
The good news is that anti-ageing
haircare is now one of the fastest
growing areas in the beauty industry
and in almost all cases you can now
find a product or treatment to help
turn back the clock.
From vitamin-enhanced thickening
products to follicle-boosting
supplements, there is something
to keep locks looking thick and
glossy at every age.

at alternative
approaches to
managing
menopause
HE menopause is inevitable,
a natural change as the
female body produces less of
the hormone oestrogen. Its
a change in life but one that
doesnt have to be accepted
to the full. Research shows that
many women are too embarrassed
to talk to their doctors and so miss
out on valuable advice.
The menopause usually affects
women in their late 40s or early 50s
80 per cent of them experience
symptoms such as hot flushes,
night sweats, mood swings,
insomnia and lack of libido.
The problems generally last four
years, yet can last 14 years.
There are several ways in which
you can offset the effects of the
menopause.

Ronan Keating, 39, shot to fame
as part of Boyzone in the 1990s.
He later forged a solo career
before rejoining the band and
has also been a judge on
Australian versions of The X Factor
and The Voice. He is married to
Storm, has three children, Jack,
Missy and Ali from his first
marriage. He splits time between
London, Dublin and Sydney.
WHAT WAS YOUR MOST
MEMORABLE HOLIDAY?
My honeymoon last August was
phenomenal. Storm and I spent a
week in Ulusaba, which is Sir
Richard Bransons private game
reserve in South Africa.
It was the most incredible
week. We woke up every
morning at 6am to see the
African sunrise over the
bush, and then would
be driven out to see
the wildlife.
We saw rhino,
elephant, lion, wild
dogs, zebra,
everything you
could imagine. The
food was amazing,
the people were
friendly. We could
easily have spent
another week there.
We then flew onto

FAVOURITE SOUVENIR?
A copper and silver prowling
leopard statue what we picked
up from our honeymoon trip to
South Africa.
We like to pick up attractive
things from our travels, but it
tends to be more to go into our
home rather than be just a
souvenir. In Amsterdam recently,
we picked up three paintings by
a local artist, which are hanging
on our walls.

Admiral now
440m adrift
OVER 440million was wiped from
the value of car insurer Admiral
Group yesterday as low interest
rates put a dent in its ability to pay
out on future claims.
Shares in the FTSE 100 owner of
Confused.com reversed 173p to
2081p, having this week hit a record
high, after it admitted market volatility weakened its capital strength.
Its solvency ratio capital as a
proportion of the minimum required
fell from 206 per cent to 180 per
cent in the six months to 30 June.
Lower interest rates have increased
the value of liabilities for claims
alongside a reduction in the value of
its own funds, but Admiral said it
maintained a strong capital buffer
and does not see a material adverse
impact on day to day
operations after the
Brexit vote. It also hiked
its half-year dividend
payout by 23 per cent.
The capital concerns
overshadowed a 4 per
cent rise in interim pretax profit to 193million
on 19 per cent higher
turnover of 1.26bilion,
as Admiral increased its
UK car cover customers
by 11 per cent to 3.52
million. Chief executive
David Stevens, inset,
LAURA ASHLEY
COOKING WITH GAS
SHOPPERS appetite for kitchen
products and cookware kept
Laura Ashleys sales on the boil.
Same-store home accessories
turnover for the 74 weeks to 30
June increased by 6.8 per cent,
outstripping the 2.2 per cent
like-for-like growth in fashions.
Furniture takings were up 4.3
per cent and online sales
jumped 15.7 per cent as the
group posted a pre-tax profit of
25.8million on total sales of
400.9million. Chairman Tan
Sri Dr Khoo Kay Peng said
the brand would continue
to explore partnerships
in new markets,
despite taking
a 1.3million
charge after its
Australian partner
went into administration
in January. It has since signed
a new licence partner there and
has 252 franchised stores in 29
territories.
By David Shand
said: Weve benefited from an
increasingly rational motor market
with evidence of a move towards a
less violent cycle. Prices have been
rising and weve used this opportunity to grow our motor book
strongly.
Admiral said it could look to move
its European business to Ireland or
elsewhere if British insurers lose socalled passporting rights to sell
their products across Europe. It has
operations in Spain, Italy and
France. Eamonn Flanagan, insurance analyst at Shore Capital, said:
The UK motor book has benefited
from good rate increases but we
remain sceptical of Admirals ability
to replicate this success
in the highly competitive
home
market.
The
noise
around
the
groups solvency position does question the
wisdom of Admirals
return of capital strategy.
Admiral had indicated
previously
it
would
return 150-200million
of surplus capital to
shareholders, but this
has been reduced to
100-150million.

He is in a difficult position because, at this late stage in the
transfer window, most leading clubs have settled their goalkeeping
staff.
Everton appear his only serious Premier League suitors with
Europa League winners Sevilla also thought to have an interest.
Yesterday ex-City midfielder Joey Barton said: The club I played

since London 2012,
then he put them

The defending

sent out an ominous

After a four-week

in St Moritz, Brownlee,

despite injuries and
ankle surgery last year
to rectify a longstanding complaint.
Now he aims to

said. Its just

The Leeds Triathlon

then. Im in my best
shape since London.
Its given me a lot of
