MEC 420 Heat Transfer

Fall 2016-17 Semester

Project (7% of total marks)
The project will be carried out in a group of three to four students. In this
semester project, you have to design and construct a water purifier such that
it evaporates water using solar energy. The condensed evaporated water is
to be collected in a beaker or graduated cylinder. A technical final report with
all the details is also to be submitted in addition to the demonstration of the
functional apparatus for this project.
Design requirements:

The apparatus should be light weight and fit in a typical student back
pack used to carry books etc.
The apparatus should be able to evaporate and condense water at a
minimum average rate of a total 60 ml of water per minute. Make (and
submit) a video of the operating apparatus producing a minimum of 60
ml of water in a minute.
The final apparatus should be aesthetic and labeled properly
mentioning details of the course code, title, semester and group
member names and registration numbers.

Other requirements and due dates:

1- Group members finalization before Lecture # 3 (September 05, 2016).
Please submit the details of student names and student numbers in
writing in the course instructors office. If you have any doubts about
the project, get them cleared by discussion with your course instructor
by this time.
2- Progress report covering the abstract, introduction, literature survey
and initial design details by October 3rd. Hard copy of this report is
required to be submitted in the course instructors office.
3- Final comprehensive report (including all information already provided
in the progress report) of the project is due by November 21st. The
technical report must mention; the importance/utility of the project and
the learning outcomes, the other design options that you had
considered and reasons for your final choice of design. Do not forget
to provide information of; the expenditure details, evidence of
assurance of the above design requirements, the materials used and
their selection criteria. A table showing the experimental data. The
final report and the apparatus carries 5% of the total marks.

4- Send soft copy of the presentation by e-mail before November 21,

2016. Project demonstration/explanation and project (2% marks) will
be scheduled in the last week of November 2016.
