Project 5:
Monochromatic Scene
Theme: Travel

In this project, you will use a monochromatic color scale to paint a scene of your
choice. Your goal is to showcase:
an original design of a scene inspired by a place you want to travel (cityscape, landscape, spacescape, or
seascape)
may be abstract or realistic
a monochromatic color scheme which showcases a light source
use the pure hue, tint, shade, and tone of the color you choose to create a wide range of value
use contrast to define each part of your painting
space through use of a horizon line, varying scale, overlapping, range of detail and inclusion of a foreground,
middleground, and background
a pleasing composition that shows movement and a focal point
craftsmanship

Step-by-Step Instructions:
Step 1: Bring in a Photo
Choose a scene you would like to paint. This could be a cityscape, landscape, spacescape,
seascape, imagined scene, etc.
Step 2: Edit the Composition of the Photo You Brought
First determine does your photo have a focal point (emphasis)? Is your eye able to travel
(movement)? Does it depict a foreground, middleground, and background (space)? Create a
thumbnail sketch in your sketchbook of your photo and edit areas of the photos to create a
pleasing composition (see dos and donts to the right). You may need to eliminate objects or
move them to do so.

Step 3: Prepare Your Paper and Sketch Your Final Composition

Divide your photo in fourths and your paper in fourths (equally). See the grid
method on the left, but note they use more than four boxes. Transfer your
final sketch and use the grid to help you place the objects correctly.
Remember to include your edits in Step 2, and be sure to draw lightly!

Step 4: Create Your Monochromatic Scene

Use your knowledge of mixing a pure hue (color) to create a tint (hue+white), a shade (hue+black), and a tone
(hue+complement) to paint your scene. Hints: Work background to foreground, build up base colors, and then, add values
last by working dark to light.
Step 5: Turn-In Your Project
Turn-in your project on the appropriate due date by submitting the link to your digital portfolio in the proper unit folder on
Schoology. You should have included a clear picture and artist statement in your slides.
