Course Description:
This course is a senior level nursing elective that focuses on the role of the
professional nurse in the peri-operative area and care of the patient in the
peri-operative setting. The role of the nurse in the pre-operative area, intraoperative area and post-operative area will be covered in addition to the role
of other patient care team members including, surgeons, anesthesiologists,
respiratory therapists, and pastoral care. Students will be required to do an
observation day in an operating room.
Learning Objectives:
At the end of the course, the student will:
1. Define peri-operative nursing diagnosis
2. Apply nursing knowledge and clinical skills to perform a comprehensive
pre-operative assessment.

**Instructor will be on campus during normal class time for
questions/concerns regarding assignments.
Course Policies:
The Pre-Course Reflection must be submitted by the beginning of the second
class. If it has not been submitted the student will be dropped from the class.
E-mails regarding assignments or general class questions will be returned
within 24 hours during the week. I will try to return e-mails within 24 hours
on the weekends but this is not a guarantee. NO e-mails will be returned
regarding assignments 48 hours before the assignment is due.
Discussion board is expected to be building upon information from the class,
text, E-Reserves and what your classmates have posted. Netiquette is
expected when posting or replying to others.
During observations you are a guest in the OR at the facilities. You are
expected to positively represent the University and School of Nursing. You
are expected to abide by the facilitys policies and regulations. If any issues
arise notify the instructor immediately.
