HW # 1, Due Sept 5, at the beginning of class

Problem 1 : Tapered bar with uniform and tip load
For a tapered bar fixed at the left end with a force 1000 lb
applied at the right end. The bar length L=100 in and the crosssectional area varies as
A=(5-2*x/L) in^2
The bar is also suject to a uniform load of 20 lb/in. Find
displacement and stress solutions. Use E=10^7 psi.
Plot the displacement and stress.Also compute and tabulate
displacement and stress at x=0,25,50,75 and 100 in.

Problem 2 : Uniform C-F beam

with

tip loads

For a uniform clamped-free beam, a force P=100 lb and a moment

of 20000 in-lb are applied at the right end. The beam length
L=80 in with a uniform square cross-sectional area 2 in^2.
Find displacement

and bending moment and shear force solutions.

Plot these soltions.

Problem 3 : Tapered C-F beam

with

tip loads

For a tapered clamped-free beam, a force P=100 lb and a moment

of 20000 in-lb are applied at the right end. The beam length
L=80 in with a cross-sectional area moment of inertia varies
linearly as I=4-2*x/L in^4
Find displacement and bending moment and shear force solutions.
Plot these soltions. Are the bending moment and shear force
diagram same as Problem 2? Why? Use E-10^7 psi.
