DEFINITIONS
Nominal ball diameter, Dw

Class tolerance ST

Diameter value which is used for the

purpose of general identification of a ball
size.

Permissible range for DwmL within a

class. The value of the class tolerance ST
is identical to the class interval IG.

Mean diameter of a ball Dwm

Deviation from spherical form tDws

Arithmetic mean of the largest and

smallest diameter of a single ball.

The greatest radial distance in every

equatorial plane between a sphere
circumscribed around the ball surface
and any point on the ball surface.

Lot mean diameter DwmL

Arithmetic mean of the largest and
smallest ball diameter Dwm in a batch.

Ball grade G
A specific combination of dimensional
tolerances, shape tolerances, surface
roughness and sorting tolerances. Each
grade is identified by number that is
preceded by the letter G.

Class interval IG

Variation of the ball diameter within

a batch VDwL
Difference between the largest and
smallest mean ball diameter Dwm within
a batch. Only applies to grades G3 to G200
(except G80).

Grading parameter VDWL

Amount in which the permissible deviation

of the nominal ball diameter is uniformly
subdivided.

Lot/Batch
A definite quantity of balls that have been
manufactured under identical conditions
and which all exhibit practically the same
properties.

Surface roughness Ra
Characteristic value giving the surface
roughness.

Class S
Difference between the mean ball diameter
of a batch (for VDwL) or part of a batch (for
VDwA) and the nominal ball diameter Dw,
rounded to an exact multiple of the class
interval IG.

Grading parameter VDWA

Variation of the ball diameter within

a class VDwA
Difference between the largest and
smallest mean ball diameter within a
class. Applies to grades G80, G500 -G700
and for all types of special materials.

Ball diameter variation VDws

Difference between the largest and
smallest diameter of a single ball.

PLASTIC BALLS
Plastic balls are produced using standard and special polymer
resins with diameters from 1.50 to 150 mm. and they can be
used instead of stainless steel or steel balls in various industrial
applications at lower cost than metal balls.
Plastic balls offer above all the advantage of being very light,
since their specific weight is very low. They are also highly
resistant to heat and they provide smooth and silent running,
totally noise and friction free. Unlike conventional metal balls
they do not require lubrication.

NYLON (PA)
Insoluble in common solvents, alcalis, diluted mineral acids and organic
acid substances. It is, above all, resistant to alcalis, oils and petroleum
greases at temperatures up to 150 C, inorganic saline solutions, aromatic
hydrocarbons, low strength alcohols, gasoline. It has high strength, rigidity
and hardness characteristics.

DELRIN (ACETAL RESIN - POM)

Polymer resin with excellent mechanical and chemical resistance and
good electrical properties. Resistant to inorganic saline solutions,
aliphatic, aromatic and chlorinated hydrocarbons, low strength alcohols,
ether, combustible mixtures, mineral oils and greases. Balls made of
these materials are often used for sliding fittings of tables and drawers,
furniture bearings, rollers, valves and electronic components, sailing boat
fittings.

Another important feature is their excellent resistance to

oxidation and abrasion and, therefore the use of these balls,
even in very corrosive environments, allows long life of the
component concerned. They also provide electrical and heat
insulation and are not magnetic. The most suitable type of POLYPROPYLENE (PP)
synthetic material can be chosen from a wide range of plastics Excellent chemical resistance, low specific weight (less than water) and
each with different characteristics.
the highest melting point of thermoplastics. It is an excellent electrical
insulator and has a low dielectric constant coefficient. It is often used
where the capacity to float on fluids in general is required. It is ideal for
equipment used for blood transfusions, level indicators and deodorant
roll-on sticks. It is highly resistant to chemical substances, such as
acids, alcalis, alcohols and many inorganic substances, saline solutions,
solvents, alcohols, gasoline (petrol), water, oils, greases, detergent, fruit
juices and milk. It is not resistant to aromatic hydrocarbons and chlorates.
It is perfect for all medical and pharmaceutical applications.

The most common applications include plastic bearings

and rollers, ball bearings for furniture, micro-pumps for
sprays, dispensers, pumps and valves, precision instruments,
measurement and control equipment, photographic and
pharmaceutical equipment, computers, conditioning and
automation equipment, photocopiers and equipment for the
industry.

On request, we can supply further materials of plastic balls and glass fibres filled balls.

CERAMIC BALLS
Ceramic balls are widely used in strong conditons. Ceramic have a lower density than steel, a low coefficient of termal
expansion and a very high hardness. They have a long life in very high velocitiy applications. The most important
materials are Silicion Nitrid, Alumina Oxide and Zirconium Oxide.

Si3N4 SILICON NITRIDE

The most widely used type of ceramic due to very high resistance to wear and abrasion in general. It has a low coefficient
of thermal expansion (25% of that of steel balls) and a weight 60% lower than steel. It has a micro-structure specially
designed for applications subject to great stress. It does not require lubrication, it is resistant to corrosion, antimagnetic and electrically insulating, and it continues to be efficient at high temperatures up to +1400 C. It combines
extreme hardness with a high precision ball. Si3N4 balls are widely used in high precision bearings in the airspace
industry, for machine tools, measurement instruments, valves for automotive technique, compressors and fast turning
hard disc.

AL2O3 ALUMINIA OXIDE

Alumina Oxide balls are particularly well suited for use in extremely harsh environments where high temperatures,
corrosive and erosive substances are present. Standard 99.5% alumina oxide ceramic balls have proven performance
in wear, heat and corrosive environments, as well as, in maintaining dimensional stability at temperatures up to
2000F.
Alumina resists oxidation and is tolerant to water, salt solutions, and many chemicals and acids, but is not suitable for
use in hydrochloric or hydrofluoric acids or strong alkaline solutions. Typical applications include pumps, valves and
flow meters

Zr02 ZIRCONIUM OXIDE

This material, compared has a high degree of compactness and considerable flexural strength, which makes it very
reliable. It also has a low modulus of elasticity, close to that of steel, together with an extraordinarily low thermal
conductivity.
