Feed Requirements
Content
Publisher must have distribution rights for all content within the feed.
If images are included in the feed, image attribution and image caption are required.
Links of a primarily promotional nature may be stripped per Microsofts discretion.
Feeds must be fresh content freshness critical and is a release criterion before going live.
Any change to the structure of a feed must be communicated to MSN Editorial Engineering 30 days in advance
of the change.
Partner endpoints must be static/unchanging where there is no requirement to build any dynamic values such as
route segments, query string values and HTTP request header values.

Use of Syndicated Images

MSN recommends providing an image even if you dont have syndication rights. However, MSN requires you to set the
HaveImageSyndicationRights field to indicate you do not have syndication rights for this image.
In cases where the content provider does not have rights to syndicate the images that would normally appear in the
Article, MSN requires that the content provider include the ImageLicsensorId and ImageLicensorName (definitions in
table above). MSN has agreements with many image licensors, and the included image may be covered by those
agreements. These include, but are not limited to:

Articles can contain related articles links if provided via the following methods:
Automatically populate most recent articles Microsoft will display links to the most recent stories that it has
ingested amongst the feeds supplied from the provider. Similar to above, it will use the canonical link by default
but if not provided, Microsoft will not display this link.
Supply related links with article see below for examples on how to do this. If this option is selected, the
Partner must supply at least three related links with each content item in the feed.
NOTE: Title and the href are the mandatory attributes for the related links provided in the feeds. Thumbnail images
can be part of the related link item with the image URL and the image title.

Linking to Partner-Supplied Related Articles within the Article using NewsML

<AssociatedWith> is the tag that is supported by NewsML for linking related articles.
A reference to a NewsItem with which the current one is associated (for example, a series of articles, or collection of
photos, of which it is a part).

The NewsItem attribute identifies the relevant NewsItem. In this, the link can be an http URL to the article link of the
associating article.

The atom:link element defines the relationship between a resource and the related item.

The element must have an href attribute that contains the URL of the related resource and can contain the following
attributes: hreflang, length, title, type.
For related content. The element can indicate rel attribution which contains a keyword that provides the nature of
the relationship between the linked resource and the element.

Deep Linking Content to Your App

A deep-link is a specially crafted link that allows a MSN user to open a piece of web content directly in an app installed
on the user's platform. In the case of MSN, content providers will provide an app deep-link in each piece of content
ingested by MSN. This link will be combined at render time with the content provider's app installation location, and
allow rendering to present a "Get the App", "Open the App", "View in the App" experience in that piece of content.
To take advantage of this capability, as a content provider you will need the following:
1. A Windows Universal Platform app published to the Windows Store.
2. The App must have launch protocol and URI Activation support. See URI Activation for more information.

3. In any XML-based feed (ATOM, XML, RSS, mRSS), a content Provider will add the following namespace alias
definition to the header:

For videos to be hosted by Microsoft, the guidance is to provide the highest quality video file so that Microsoft
can transcode to the proper streams per device. Minimum quality of 720p, 3Mbps is recommended.
Videos can be embedded within the article if a video link is provided as a media element. <iframe> tags and the
videos with the <media:content> element are supported for the inline videos.
MSN supports in-line embedded videos in the <iframe> tags as well, this support is for both 1PP and the 3PP
videos like YouTube, daily motion videos etc., and more than one 3PP inline video can be supported for an
article.
<iframe> tags and the videos with the <media:content> element are supported for the inline YouTube URLs.
Multiple in-line videos can appear in a single article.
Specifications for In-Line Videos
The video URL should be placed in-line within an articles body. The video will be placed according to placement
of URL in body of article in feed. If the video media content sections are outside of article section, these videos
will be placed randomly in the article body.
MSN supports one type of video player per Provider; either a First Party Player (1PP) or a Third Party Player
(3PP). For providers who have an existing video feed, any articles from that provider must use the same type of
video player as the videos in the video feed. For example, if the Provider is configured to use a 1PP (First Party
Video Player), then in-line videos should also be 1PP. If the Providers video feed is configured to use a 3PP
(Third Party Video Player) then inline videos should also be 3PP and will be played in same player.
YouTube videos are 3PP videos, and YouTube in-line videos are supported either in <iframe> or in the
<media:content> section.

Avoiding Duplication of Videos from the Same Provider

The ingestion code checks for duplicate videos between an articles in-line video and videos ingested as part of a video
feed. The provider should be configured with the correct UniqueID (the UniqueID helps the code identify existing
content against this provider). With this in place, any duplicate videos will be skipped. If there is suspicion that duplicate
videos are being ingested, we can check to ensure that the feeds UniqueID is configured correctly.
NOTE: Any change to a partners UniqueID scheme must be communicated to MSN Editorial Engineering 30 days in
advance of the change. This allows enough time to either re-map or re-ingest videos using the new scheme.

Detecting Updates to Previously Published Content

Ingested content can be updated with the changes in the content based on the below conditions:
The <UniqueID> element should have the same value as original content. Any re-use of the <UniqueID> value will

The <publishedDate> element should have the same value as when the content was originally published.
The <updatedDate> element should have a value of the current date (different from the <publishedDate> value). For
