A Prayer
for Thanksgiving
O God of all Creation: You have cared for the earth, and have filled it with your riches. Abundance
flows in your steppes, through the pastures and wilderness. You provide for our land, softening it
with showers, bathing it in light, and blessing it with growth.
e hills sing with joy; the meadows are covered with flocks; the fields deck themselves with wheat;
and together they glorify your name!
On this occasion of our anksgiving, we as a nation take rest from our labors to consider your
many blessings. We thank you for our freedoms, and for the opportunity to contribute our skills,
our attributes and our values toward the good of society.
We thank you for the mixture of our cultures, blending us into one people under God. Help us
to be a light unto other nations, and to further the cause of freedom and justice all over the world.
We remember those who are less fortunate than we. We lift up in prayer the victims of poverty
and racism, and all those who suer from forms of political and economic oppression. Let the
word that goes forth from our mouths speak of your peace, and let us proclaim our hope in Christ
as Savior of all humankind.
We pray that you will bless all those who gather here, as we have come to experience your presence
among us. Give us your guidance, O God, and empower us for your work. For we claim nothing
for ourselves, but return all honor and glory unto you, and oer our thanks and praise. Amen.

AgriPOWERs leadership training helps class members develop
important skills necessary to becoming effective leaders and advocates, including spokesperson and media training, etiquette training,
social networking, communications, and more. Seven, two-to-three
day training sessions are held throughout the year, with one in
Washington, D.C. to help class members gain a valuable understanding of national and global issues. Another training session will
be in Georgia so participants can learn about the differences and
similarities in agriculture from state to state.
Ohio Farm Bureau started AgriPOWER in 2008 because it recognized a need for leaders who can be advocates for the food and
agricultural industries, said Melinda Witten, AgriPOWER director.
Over the years, AgriPOWER graduates have taken the training they
received and applied it to their businesses, communities, and ag
industry. Theyve really stood out with their leadership, whether its
at a township meeting or at a meeting with their member of
Congress in Washington.
In addition to Ohio Farm Bureau, AgriPOWER partners include
Nationwide Insurance, Ohio Farm Bureau Foundation, Heartland
Bank, Champaign Premium Grain Growers, Ohio FFA Foundation,

Ohio Farm Bureau Foundation Awards Five Grants

The Ohio Farm Bureau Foundation recently awarded five Agricultural
Action and Awareness Grants that will help individuals and groups make a difference in their communities. The grants focused on four core areas: economic development, education, environment, and the human-animal bond.
Supported by Ohio Farm Bureau Federation, the foundation is a 501 (c) (3)
nonprofit, public, charitable organization registered in Ohio.
This years grant recipients and projects include:
Canine Companions for Independence received $3,000. The organizations assistance dogs increase the independence of their human partners
through the task-based commands they are trained to complete. The dogs also
improve the quality of life of their human partner by increasing their confidence, social interaction, and emotional well-being.
Northwestern Local School District in Wayne County received $3,000
for the construction of a greenhouse for educational purposes that will include
hanging plants, tabled plants, and hydroponics that will incorporate
clean/renewable energy through solar lighting, a bio-fuel area and in the future
a geothermal HVAC system and wind turbine.
Ohio Farm Bureaus AgriPOWER program received $3,000 for two participant scholarships. The purpose of AgriPOWER is to develop and train Ohio
farmers and agribusiness professionals to become effective leaders, spokespersons and advocates for Ohio agriculture.
Ohio Pork Council received $3,000 for its Virtual Field Trip to a Pig
Farm program. Thousands of students will have the opportunity to see what
happens on real Ohio farms without leaving their classroom. Through a video
chat platform, students will be given the opportunity to see the farmer and pigs,
ask questions, and have them answered live on air by the farmer hosting the
virtual tour.
Scipio-Republic Fire Department in Seneca County received a $2,700
grant for grain bin rescue equipment.
Since 1985, the Ohio Farm Bureau Foundation has provided funding across
the state for both small and large projects, including the Nationwide and Ohio
Farm Bureau 4-H Center on the Ohio State University campus. It also
endowed Ohio States C. William Swank Chair for Agricultural Economics
and Rural Development.
Applications are now being accepted for the foundations fall funding grant
cycle. Deadline to apply is October. 3.

livestock and farming operations, Winner Transport Inc. (WTI) has a
fleet of trucks that haul livestock to farms and meat packers across 18
states.

RHUBARB BUTTER CRUNCH

4-1/2 cups rhubarb (cut up)
1-1/2 cups sugar
4-1/2 tbsps. flour
1-1/2 cups brown sugar
1-1/2 cups quick oats

2-1/4 cups flour
1-1/8 cups butter
Combine rhubarb, sugar, and 4-1/2 tbsps. flour and place

in a 9x13 baking dish. Combine brown sugar, oats, and
2-1/4 cups flour. Cut in butter. Sprinkle over rhubarb
mixture. Bake at 375 degrees for 40 minutes.
Serve hot or cold with ice cream.

Covington Cattleman Successful in Best

Of the Buckeye Program at Ohio State Fair
The Ohio Cattlemens Association (OCA) hosted the Best of the
Buckeye show at the Ohio State Fair July 27 thru August 7 during the
junior shows. The Best of the Buckeye program is coordinated by OCA
and held in conjunction with the Ohio Beef Expo and Ohio State Fair.
The Best of the Buckeye program had a strong year with more than 250
head of cattle nominated by youth and breeders, adding more registered
animals to the show and doubling the number of classes for several
breeds.
The program recognizes top Ohio bred, born, and registered calves,
along with the breeder and exhibitor, in each breed division at the two
shows. Best of the Buckeye provides Ohio seedstock breeders with an
enhanced marketing opportunity for Ohio bred, born, and registered
steers and heifers, creates a source of more moderately priced show
steers and heifers by providing a program with awards and prestige, and
attracts new participants interested in showing at the Ohio Beef Expo
and/or the Ohio State Fair.
This years generous sponsors were Garwood Cattle Co., Heifer
Division; Jones Show Cattle and R.D. Jones Excavating, Steer Division;
and Franklin Equipment, Scholarship Division. $45,000 was presented
between the two shows in the form of premiums, scholarships, and
awards. Every winning Best of the Buckeye exhibitor received a basic
premium of $300 for champion, $200 for reserve champion, and $100
for third overall. Ohio breed associations also contributed additional premiums. OCA would like to thank these sponsors for contributing to a
successful year of the Best of the Buckeye program.

Our readers tell us one of their favorite pages is the Snapshot of the
Month. Winners who are always pleasantly surprised to find their picture
published say they enjoy the reaction of friends, neighbors, and family
members.
All you need to do is send an interesting color picture (original photos preferred, or if emailing, use either a jpeg or tiff format) of good quality,
along with some background information. Farm-related photos are best suited for country living. When taking your pictures, make sure the lighting
is sufficient, and that your subjects are centered in the viewfinder. Stand
back far enough so that heads arent cut off. If need be, we can crop photos
to eliminate any unnecessary background.
Dont forget to include your actual mailing address if you email your
picture and information to us, so your prize can be mailed out to you.
