An Age-Friendly Hamilton
The Plan
Hamiltons Plan for an Age-Friendly City
describes a vision and identifies principles for
developing policies and delivering services for
older adults. The Plan is organized around seven
areas of focus or strategic goals, and commits to
a series of objectives and actions that will help
to achieve these goals. Each of the seven areas
includes an overview of issues identified through
research and consultation, and an environmental
scan that lists assets, gaps and challenges.
The actions are preliminary. Conversations
with internal and external stakeholders need
to continue. Implementation plans are being
developed to make sure that the actions are
robust and success can be measured. Additional
objectives and actions may surface as the work
of becoming more age-friendly proceeds.
The Vision
All residents of Hamilton are respected
and included in community life regardless
of age, ethnicity, race, gender, ability and
background; policy and planning engages
residents, reflects diversity, fosters social
connectivity and the opportunity for active
living and to age in place. Social connectivity
links people to each other, place and services
thus advancing health and well-being, while
increasing the citys social capital.

Firstly, thank you! Our Recreation Division Staff have the great task of generating programming
that will appeal and engage our community as a whole. Your continued support registering
and participating in classes, workshops and events demonstrates the important role these
services are to our City.
As Hamilton continues to thrive in so many positive ways, my hope is that we, as individuals,
continue to grow and be active as well. I believe that a healthy and active community is a
fundamental element to a prosperous city. Encouraging our aging population to remain active is
vital. As the Mayor for the City of Hamilton, I am pleased to introduce our latest programming
guide aimed at the 55+ population.
This guide includes targeted programming both registered and drop in. Classes take place at all
City of Hamilton seniors centres, seniors clubs across the city and at two YMCA locations. A
great new tool to complement the Hamilton Recreation Guide!
I encourage you take advantage of the services that are available to us, and continue to grow
together, living a healthy and active lifestyle and making Hamilton the best place in Canada to
raise a child, promote innovation, engage citizens and provide diverse economic activities.
Yours Sincerely,
Fred Eisenberger

a repertoire including music from Gershwin to
Gospel, from Broadway to Boogies, from Country
to Calypso and everything in between! You do not
have to read music, although it would be a great
help! Albertones also perform in our community.

Recorder Beginner
This is a beginners level course for those who have
never player a recorder, those who played a long
time ago and forgot how, and perhaps those who
have never learned how to read music. You will be
guided gently through the intricacies of blowing a
woodwind instrument, of learning how to finger
various notes, and of reading music. You will learn
to play simple songs appropriate to the recorder.
The instructor will assist you in acquiring a suitable
instrument for this activity. Once you have become
reasonably proficient at playing the recorder, you
may choose to join ASACs acclaimed recorder
ensemble Second Wind. So come! Have fun! Join
the world-wide community of recorder players.
Recorder Ensemble
ASACs acclaimed recorder ensemble, Second Wind,
features 6 different sizes of recorders, sometimes
supported by cello, keyboard, or guitar. Members
study consort music appropriate to the recorder,
and often present concerts in the community. New
members who already play are always welcome.
Reading music is essential.
Silver Belles
Soprano Mezzo and Alto voices blend to sing old
favorites as well as learn new pieces. The choir
practices once a week and performs about 10
times a year at locations around Ancaster and the
Hamilton area bringing music and song to many
others. Knowing how to read music is helpful, but
not essential.
Tap Dance (Beginner)
Learn basic tap steps. Learn to tap rhythms and
patterns with your heels and toes. Tap shoes
required for this program.
Ukulele Band
The ukulele is fun, light weight, portable and
fairly easy instrument to learn. We sing along as we
play and sometimes use percussion instruments.
Please bring your own ukulele. All levels of musical
abilities are welcome.

Drop-in Program Descriptions
Discussion Group
Do you enjoy discussing current events happening
throughout the world or in your own backyard? Or,
on a more personal note, are you keen to discuss a
little something about this wonderful, challenging
journey through life you have been on with other
people in the group who just may, with a little
coaxing, want to do the same?
This discussion group will open up opportunities
for us to learn about one another, to debate in
a fun way on topics we choose, and to just enjoy
the power of sharing our own voices! And, using
those voices to also share about ourselves - before
Canada, if from another country, before retirement,
after retirement - we are all unique and have a story
to tell. Take this opportunity to tell your story. Topics
for each week are posted in the Centre.
Sunrise Walkers
A drop-in walking group. It is a great way to improve
your health, increase your fitness level and reduce
stress. They walk all year round. It is a great way to
stay warm in the Winter and cool in the Summer.
Wear running shoes.
Theatre Outings and Other Fun Bus Trips
Watch for our advertised upcoming outings. We
visit local and GTA theatres, go on lunch outings
and shopping ventures and much more. Prices vary
depending on the venue. Come out to see our trip
coordinators on Wednesdays from 10 am 12 pm
or look on our bulletin board at the Centre for more
information.
For more information regarding the above off-site
programs, please contact Flamborough Senior
Centre!
OFF-SITE Programs
Hiking Group
We carpool to trails in the area. Walks are
approximately an hour and are 2-3 kilometers in
length. Hikes are not always flat, so it is advisable
to have good walking/hiking shoes or boots and
poles if you wish. We hike all year round.
Mini Hikes
A 45 minute easy walk/hike around Waterdown. We
will be visiting parks and trails in the area.

Why Do Good Courses Get Cancelled?
At times classes are cancelled due to insufficient
registrations. Excellent courses are sometimes
cancelled when participants wait until last minute
to register! We make decisions as to which classes
are viable one week prior to the programs start
date, this allows time for preparation. We highly
recommend that you register early to avoid
unnecessary cancellations.
Billiards
Billiard memberships are $35.00 annually and will
increase $5.00 at the time of renewal to a maximum
of $40.00 year. Fees to be reviewed yearly thereafter.
How Long is a Program Session?
Unless otherwise stated, a session for Fall is 12
weeks, and Winter is 10 weeks long. We cannot
guarantee that all courses will always be exactly
1012 weeks in length due to cancellations beyond
our control such as holiday closures, inclement
weather, or seasonal special events.
Parking
The parking lot is often very busy. We highly
recommend that you carpool or take public transit
when possible. The area in front of the doors is a No
Parking Zone as emergency vehicles require this
space to turn around. Please do not leave your
vehicle unattended in the area in front of the main
doors. If you are scheduled for a Sackville trip,
please use Overflow Parking Area.

A Seniors Story:
Starting a new chapter at ASAC
The Ancaster Senior Centre 55+ welcomed me as
a member in 2008, a newly retired Toronto office
worker, 60 years old and looking for recreation
and new friends. It was a good decision. Seven
years of Tai Chi classes have helped me regain my
strength after chemotherapy in 2009.
I love those twice a week classes that strengthen
mind, body and spirit. The late Ernie Hudson, who
was a convenor for the Wentworth District 55+
Summer Games, encouraged me to participate
in prediction walking and Nordic Walking events.
When I found out there was swimming, I entered
that event too. These events brought me the first
gold medals of my life!
