Course Objective:
This is an introductory course of basics in production and operations management. We will explore
problems underlying the design and operation of production and service systems. This course will
mostly focus on manufacturing and production, however many of these concepts also apply to the
service systems as well.

What is production planning and why is it important?


Demand management and forecasting
Aggregate planning
Master production scheduling (MPS)
Inventory control and management
Materials requirement planning (MRP)
Capacity planning and management
Operations scheduling

Evaluation:
Complete reading assignments prior to class
No late homework assignments will be accepted
Homework: Homework assignment will be announced in the class and in the webpage.
Homework groups will be two people. You will submit one assignment per group with clearly
indicating the names of group members. The homework groups will remain same throughout the
semester.

Project: You will develop a solution for a real life problem, prepare a project report and present
your results in the class. Details will be provided later.
Assignment Group: You may complete your homework assignments and projects in groups of
two students. Once you select your assignment group it should remain fixed for the entire
semester, i.e., all assignments must be completed with the same group members. Please select your
homework group and notify me by e-mail (emineyaylali@itu.edu.tr) by October 1st. If you would
prefer for me to assignment your group, please contact me by September 28th.
Exams: There will be 2 midterms and a final exam. Make-up exams will be given only in case of
emergencies, and only after officially documented proof is provided.
Grading:
Homework and Project: 25%
Midterms: 30%
Final Exam: 45%
