Lesson Cycle
Lesson Title/Topic: 7th Grade Science
Concept: The structure & functions of organism organelles
Standards/Rationale: 112.19 (b) 12 (D): Differentiate between structure & function in plant &
animal cell organelle, including cell membrane, cell wall, nucleus, cytoplasm, mitochrondion,
chloroplast, and vacuole.
Learning Target:
The student will analyze the structure and
function of plant and animal cells by
completing a worksheet with a partner with
10 out of 14 answered correctly.

Assessment: Matching & labeling

worksheets (turn-in), quiz-quiz-trade with a
partner

Materials: Pen/pencil, paper, glue sticks, colored pencils

Lesson Cycle: (Direct instruction)

The teacher will:

The student will:
Focus/Mental Set: Have students watch
Watch video.
Cells Cells- Part of the cell rap video on
youtube. Explain that all living things are
made up of cells which are the basic
building blocks of life. Within plant and
animal cells we have organelles, which
have specific functions that keep the cell
going. Just like we have organs in our
bodies that keep us alive, think of the
organelles the cells organs. Tell the
students that a game will be played at the
end of class for chance to win candy for the
winning group.
Teacher Input: Give the students a chart
with all the organelles listed and have them
draw the organelles and make notes about
each when discussed in the blank provided.
Place poster of animal and plant cell on the
board for students to label throughout the
lecture. Call on different students each
time and give them 2 organelles (one to

provided when prompted. When called
upon, take Velcro organelle and place on
poster of cell in its appropriate location.
Actively participate in class discussions
and take notes.

each student) if they are located on both

cells. Begin discussing the organelles!
1. Cell or plasma membrane- explain
to students that this organelle is
located in both cells and this is a
thin outside layer that controls what
comes into and goes outside a cell
like a GATE. The cell membrane
protects the cell. Have the students
draw the cell membrane. Call on 2
students, give them Velcro
organelle to stick on poster.
2. The next membrane is the cell wall,
ONLY located in plants cells. The
cell wall is a tough, rigid outer layer
that protects and supports the plant
cell, kinda like a BRICK WALL.
Have the students draw the cell wall
and give one student a label to place
on poster.
3. The nucleus is one of the most
important structures in the cell.
This dense bell-shaped organelle
contains DNA and controls all of
the cells activities. It is also
responsible for the production of
proteins. Its the CONTROL
CENTER or BRAIN of both plant
and animal cells. Have students
draw and give 2 students each a
label to place on poster.
4. Next is the cytoplasm, located in
both cells. The cytoplasm is the
jelly-like fluid located outside the
nucleus that pads and supports
organelles. Have the students draw
the cytoplasm and give 2 students
cytoplasm velcro to locate on the
poster.
5. The vacuoles are the organelles
located in both animal and plant
cells that stores food, water, waste
and other materials in the cell.
Note that the vacuoles are
considerably larger in plant cells. A
hint to remember vacuoles is that

1. Draw a picture of the cell

membrane and stick Velcro cell
membrane to cell on board.

2. Draw cell wall and stick Velcro cell

wall to cell on board.

3. Draw nucleus and stick Velcro

nucleus to cell on board.

4. Draw cytoplasm and stick Velcro

cytoplasm to cell on board.

5. Draw vacuoles and stick Velcro

vacuoles to cell on board.

they will store just about anything

like a VACuum bag. Have the
students draw a vacuole and give
them 1 each to label on the poster.
6. The next organelle is the
mitochondria located in both cells.
This structure produces the energy
the cell need to carry of a function
and it looks like a bean. Remember
I am a MIghty powerhouse of the
cell. Have the students draw and
label the mitochondria.
7. The last organelle to discuss is the
chloroplasts which are located
ONLY in plant cells. The
chloroplasts capture energy from
the sun and uses it to produce food.
Remember the chloroplast as
making the cell something sweet
to eat. Hand the students draw the
chloroplast and label on the poster.

6. Draw mitochondria and stick

Velcro mitochondria to cell on
board.

7. Draw chloroplasts and stick Velcro

chloroplast to cell on board.

Guided Practice: Quiz-Quiz-Trade: Tell

the students to all stand up, give each
student one of the attached notecards and
have them mix around the room until you
say to stop. Partner them with the closest
person and choose one of the students to
read the questions to the other student.
Allow 1 minute for each question to be
answered then switch the question readers
to the other person in the pair. When the
time is up, have the partners swap the cards
and mix around again, repeat the process.

Mix around the room until the teacher says

freeze, find the person closest and begin
asking the questions on the cards. When
the time is up trade cards and repeat
process.

Independent Practice: Have the students

pair up and give them each a worksheet
packet and zip lock bag with precut labels
and a glue stick. Walk around the room
assisting students and answering questions.
Review the structures and functions of the
cells if needed.

Work with a partner to complete a

worksheet by gluing the function of the cell
and memory item to the correct cell
organelle. Fill in the blank on the plant and
animal cell worksheet to identify the
location of the organelles.

Closure: Split the classroom in half and

have each group stand on equal and

Split into equal groups and line up taking

turn answering questions by running to the

opposite sides of the room. Explain to the

center of the room when they know the
class that a question will be asked and one
answer. The group with the most points

middle of the room and lightly tap a
stapler. The first tap the stapler gets to
answer the question first, if the question is
answered correctly then that group gets a
point, if not then the other group gets to
answer for a point if correct. If both groups
fail to answer correctly, then they go to the
back of the line and the game continues.
The following questions will be asked:
1. Name the organelle that is the jellylike fluid inside of the cell.
2. What is the mitochondria
responsible for?
3. What organelle contains DNA and
is the control center of the cell?
4. What structure is the powerhouse of
the cell?
5. Name 2 structures only present in
plant cells.
6. What organelle is responsible for
storing materials and is much
smaller in animal cells?
7. What is the function of the
chloroplasts?
