Guided Practice

We have been talking about the elements of a

sentence now we are going to read together
and see if we can find the elements of stories
that we have already discussed. Can you think
of other places you have seen print features?
I can show that I know how books can be
read.
I can find and point to the first word, the
beginning capital letter and the ending mark
in a sentence,
What is the purpose of basic print and
sentence features?
I will begin by reading The Night Before
First Grade By: Natasha Wing, aloud to the
class. I will point out the cover page which
has a title and author. I will also bring my
students attention to the title page and point
out the difference between the two pages.
As I read the first page I will show students
the first word on the page. I will also bring to
my students attention that the first word is
capitalized. As I read A few sentences I will
ask my students if there is something they
notice at the end of every sentence. I will
point out that every sentence ends with a
ending mark, usually a period but can also end
in a ? ! (I will show students on board
what this symbol looks like). Also explain ?
will only be used at the end of a question and
! will be used to show excitement when
reading the sentence.
Taking turns in small groups students will

take turns alternating reading; This can rotate

every sentence or every page. As students
read they will tell the class the first word in
each sentence and point out that it is
capitalized, and lastly point out the ending
mark and explain why that ending mark was
used. For example if the sentence ended in a
? students would explain this is because this
is a question and it is asking something. We
will read about 5 pages as a class for that
everyone has a chance to practice.
Students will continue to finish reading, The
Night Before First Grade, on their own or
with a partner. As students read they will be
asked to point out the same basic print
features that we have been talking about.
Students will do this by:
circling the first word in every
sentence
Underline the first letter in each first
word to show capitalization
Circle each ending punctuation mark
(period./ question mark ?/ Exclamation
mark !)
After students have finished reading the story
to themselves they can alternate reading
sentences (or pages) and sharing with the
class the features that they have identified.
Why do we use print features?
How do they help us read?
This will be an informal assessment that
students can answer aloud as we finish
reading the book aloud.
Why do we capitalize the first letter in
the first word?
Why do we use ending marks to finish
a sentence?
What do the different ending marks
mean?
I will also use another form of informal
assessment as I observe my students reading
to themselves and see which print features
they recognize. I will also watch to see if they
can give an appropriate reason for my we use
these print features.
