1. What is a Mobile Operating System?

A mobile operating system is an operating
system for smartphones, tablets, PDAs, or other mobile devices. While
computers such as the typical laptop are mobile, the operating systems
usually used on them are not considered mobile ones as they were
originally designed for bigger stationary desktop computers that
historically did not have or need specific "mobile" features. This distinction
is getting blurred in some newer operating systems that are hybrids made
for both uses.
Mobile operating systems combine features of a personal
computer operating system with other features useful for mobile or
handheld use; usually including, and most of the following considered
essential in modern mobile systems;
a touchscreen, cellular, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS mobile
navigation, camera, video camera, speech recognition, voice
recorder, music player, near field communication and infrared blaster.
Mobile devices with mobile communications capabilities contain two
mobile operating systems the main user-facing software platform is
supplemented by a second low-level proprietary real-time operating
system which operates the radio and other hardware. Research has shown
that these low-level systems may contain a range of security vulnerabilities
permitting malicious base stations to gain high levels of control over the
mobile device.

1. Android OS (Google Inc.)

Android OS is a Linux-based platform for mobile phones. Android was released under
the Apache v2 open source license.
Android was developed by Google and the Open Handset Alliance (OHA), a coalition
of hardware, software and telecommunications companies. More than 30 companies
were involved in the OHA, including Qualcomm, Broadcom, HTC, Intel, Samsung,
Motorola, Sprint, Texas Instruments and Japanese wireless carriers KDDI and NTT
DoCoMo.
Android began its life as a Palo Alto-based startup company, founded in 2003. That
company was subsequently acquired by Google in 2005. The Android platform
includes an operating system based upon Linux, a GUI, a Web browser and end user
applications that can be downloaded. Although the initial demonstrations of Android
featured a generic QWERTY smartphone and large VGA screen, the operating system
was written to run on relatively inexpensive handsets with conventional numeric
keypads. Android runs on both of the most widely deployed cellular
standards, GSM/HSDPA and CDMA/EV-DO.

2. Bada (Samsung Electronics)

Inspired by the openness and vastness of the sea, bada, the Korean word
for ocean, is the word developers from the technology behemoth Samsung have
chosen to name their 3g smartphone operating system. It is marketed as a blue
ocean system, able to embrace a range of exciting new applications for
Samsungs 3g mobiles with a very reasonable price tag attached.

The marketing strategy of this OS gives an important clue as to what it is all

about. Differentiating itself from existing smartphone platforms, Bada OS
emphasizes how cost-effective it is in relation to its competitors, without
compromising on power and performance. The aim is to develop a new, broadchoice market in smartphones.

The operating system has actually been around for the best part of a decade,
functioning as the proprietary powerhouse behind Samsungs impressive range of
mobile devices throughout that time. The latest version of Bada, Bada 2.0, includes
a plethora of new features, 3D graphics, multipoint-touch, a revamped graphical
user interface (GUI) and an expanded repertoire of apps available for download
and installation.
Bada 2.0s voice search feature is considerably more versatile and powerful
than its predecessors. With simple spoken commands, you can speak a text
message rather than type it out; you can also seek out other menus with a quick
comment. Multipoint touch is becoming an essential feature on all 3g
smartphones; the GUI recognizes different instructions, depending on how the user
touches the screen; for example, different functions, such as zooming in or out,
switching pages, etc. depend on pinch-out or pinch-in thumb and finger
movements or finger swipes, as opposed to finger taps, etc.

3. BlackBerry OS
BlackBerry OS is a proprietary mobile operating system developed
by BlackBerry Limited for its BlackBerry line of smartphone handheld devices. The
operating system provides multitasking and supports specialized input devices
that have been adopted by BlackBerry for use in its handhelds, particularly
the track wheel, trackball, and most recently, the trackpad and touchscreen.
The BlackBerry platform is perhaps best known for its native support for
corporate email, through MIDP 1.0 and, more recently, a subset of MIDP 2.0,
which allows complete wireless activation and synchronization with Microsoft
Exchange, Lotus Domino, or Novell GroupWise email, calendar, tasks, notes, and
contacts, when used with BlackBerry Enterprise Server. The operating system also
supports WAP 1.2.
Updates to the operating system may be automatically available from
wireless carriers that support the BlackBerry over the air software loading (OTASL)
service.
Third-party developers can write software using the available
BlackBerry API classes, although applications that make use of certain
functionality must be digitally signed.
Research from June 2011 indicated that approximately 45% of mobile
developers were using the platform at the time of publication.
BlackBerry OS was discontinued after the release of BlackBerry 10, but
BlackBerry will continue support for the BlackBerry OS. However, the latest
devices, the BlackBerry Priv and the BlackBerry DTEK50, use the Android
operating system

4. iPhone OS / iOS (Apple)

Apple's mobile operating system for its iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Apple
TV and similar devices. Apple iOS was originally called the iPhone OS but was
renamed in 2010 to reflect the operating systems evolving support for additional
Apple devices.
Apple iOS is currently in v9.x release, with iOS 9 first being unveiled in 2015
in conjunction with the release of the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus smartphones.
Recent versions of iOS have introduced a number of powerful new features
to the mobile OS, most notably Apple's Siri advanced voice recognition
application, "Proactive," a contextual, predictive personal assistant that's tied in
with Siri to deliver personalized information based on a user's preferences, habits
and location, a built-in instant messaging client (iMessage), integrated support for
Apple's iCloud personal cloud storage service, iTunes Radio, and AirDrop support.

5. Windows
A mobile operating system for smartphones and mobile devices that serves
as the successor to Microsoft's initial mobile OS platform system, Windows
Mobile. Unlike Windows Mobile, Windows Phone 8 (also referred to as WinPho8)
and later versions are targeted more to the consumer market than the enterprise
market, and it replaces the more traditional Microsoft Windows OS look and feel
with a new "Metro" design system user interface.
Metro's interface consists largely of a "Start screen" made up of "Live
Tiles," which are links to applications and features that are dynamic and update in
real time. The Metro design is also expected to be prominently featured in
Windows 8 as well.
As with Apple's iOS, Google's Android OS and the BlackBerry OS, third-party
applications can be developed for Microsoft's Windows Phone and are made
available through Microsoft's Windows Marketplace for Mobile. Microsoft doesn't
enable smartphones running versions of the older Windows Mobile operating
system to be upgraded to Windows Phone 7 or Windows Phone 8, and these
versions also do not offer backward compatibility with Windows Mobile
applications.

6. FireFox OS
Firefox OS is an open-source operating system made for smartphones, tablet
computers and smart TVs designed by Mozilla and external contributors, based on
the rendering engine of their Firefox web browser and the Linux kernel.
Firefox OS is designed to provide a complete, community-based alternative
operating system, for running web applications directly or those installed from an
application marketplace. The applications use open standards and approaches
such as Java Script and HTML5, a robust privilege model, open web APIs that can
communicate directly with hardware, e.g. cellphone hardware. As such, it
competes with commercially developed operating systems such
as Apple's iOS, Google's Android, Microsoft's Windows Phone,
BlackBerry's BlackBerry 10 and Jolla's Sailfish OS.
Firefox OS was publicly demonstrated in February 2012, on Androidcompatible smartphones. By December 16, 2014, Firefox OS phones were offered
from 14 operators in 28 countries throughout the world.
On December 8, 2015, Mozilla announced that it will stop sales of Firefox
OS smartphones through carriers. Mozilla later announced that Firefox OS
smartphones would be discontinued by May 2016 as the development of "Firefox
OS for smartphones" would cease after the release of version 2.6. Around the
same time, it was reported that Acadine Technologies, a startup founded by Li
Gong (former president of Mozilla Corporation) with various other former Mozilla
staff among its employees, would take over the mission of developing carrier
partnerships, for its own Firefox OS derivative H5OS.
In January 2016, Mozilla announced that Firefox OS would power
Panasonic's UHD TVs (as previously announced Firefox OS "would pivot to
connected devices").

7. Ubuntu OS
Developed by Canonical (Ubuntu's parent company), a Ubuntu phone
refers to a modified version of the Ubuntu operating system (OS) that is designed
to run on mobile devices.
The Ubuntu phone OS offers a number of key interface features, including
Edge Magic, which enables users to find content and switch between apps
quickly via thumb gesture support from all four edges of the screen, support for
both native and Web or HTML5 apps, and a global search for apps, content and
products.
According to Canonical, Ubuntu is aimed at two core mobile segments: the
high-end super phone and the entry-level basic smartphone. Canonical believes
that the Ubuntu Phone OS can help cellular operators grow the use of data
amongst consumers who typically use only the phone and messaging but who
might be inclined to embrace the use of web and email on their Ubuntu phone.

3. Comparison of Mobile OS
Many people have ample knowledge about different mobile phones and
their companies, but a very few of them know something about operating
systems. It is vital to learn about different mobile OS used by many companies
so that you can know that what is behind your smartphones smooth and
colorful touchscreen.

Above is the popularity graph, which represents last 12 months trends. It is

apparent that Android is beating up all other operating systems, even the IOS.
Symbian, which was once an industry leader, is also observing a diminishing
slope. IOS might continue to compete Android, and with the release of
Windows Phone 8, we might see some healthy competition in future.

Symbian
Symbian OS is officially the property of Nokia. It means that any other company
will have to take permission from Nokia before using this operating system. Nokia
has remained a giant in the low-end mobile market, so after Java Symbian was the
most used in the mobile phones till a couple of years ago. Still Symbian is widely

used in low-end phones but the demand rate has been continuously decreasing.
By upgrading Symbian mobile OS, Nokia has made it capable to run smartphones
efficiently. Symbian ANNA and BELLE are the two latest updates that are
currently used in Nokias smartphones. Overall, the Symbian OS is excellently
designed and is very user-friendly.
Unfortunately, Symbian OS graph is going downwards nowadays due to the
immense popularity of Android and iOS.
Some of the phones currently running on Symbian OS are Nokia C6-01, Nokia 603,
Nokia 700, Nokia 808 Pure View, Nokia E6 (ANNA) and Nokia 701 (BELLE).
Symbian is a popular choice among Nokia dual sim mobile phones as well.

Android
September 20th, 2008 was the date when Google released the first Android OS by
the name of Astro. After sometime next upgraded versions Bender and
Cupcake were also released. Google then adopted the trend of naming Android
versions after any dessert or a sweet in alphabetical order. The other releases are
Donut, clair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly
Bean. Marshmallow (Android 6.0) is so far the latest Android version from Google.
Since the platform is not closed like iOS, there are too many great Android apps
built by developers.
Just after stepping into the smartphone and tablets market Android gained
immense popularity due to its beautiful appearance and efficient working. Many
new features were introduced which played a significant role in Androids
success. Google Play is an official app market that contains millions of different
apps for Android devices. Samsung, HTC, Motorola and many other top
manufacturers are using Android in their devices. Currently, Android is one of the
top operating systems and is considered serious threat for iPhone.

Some of the smartphones operating on Android are HTC Desire, Samsung Galaxy
Gio, Motorola Droid Razr, Samsung Galaxy S3 and HTC Wildfire.

iOS
iOS was introduced in 29th June 2007 when the first iPhone was developed. Since
then iOS has been under gone many upgrades and currently the latest one is the
iOS 9.
Apple has still not allowed any other manufacturer to lay hands on its operating
system. Unlike Android, Apple has more concentrated on the performance along
with appearance. This is the reason that the basic appearance of iOS is almost the
same as it was in 2007. Overall it is very user-friendly and is one of the mobile
best operating systems in the world.
So far iOS has been used in all iPhones, iPod & iPad.

Blackberry
Blackberry OS is the property of RIM (Research In Motion) and was first released
in 1999. RIM has developed this operating system for its Blackberry line of
smartphones. Blackberry is much different from other operating systems. The
interface style, as well as the Smartphone design, is also different having a
trackball for moving on the menu and a qwerty keyboard.
Like Apple, Blackberry OS is a close source OS and is not available for any other
manufacturer. Currently, the latest release of this operating system is Blackberry
OS 7.1 which was introduced in May 2011 and is used in Blackberry Bold 9930. It
is a very reliable OS and is immune to almost all the viruses.
Some of the smartphones operating on Blackberry OS are Blackberry Bold,
Blackberry Curve, Blackberry Torch and Blackberry 8520.

Windows
All of you will be familiar with Windows OS because it is used in computers all
over the world. Windows OS has also been used in mobile phones, but normal
mobile phone users find it a bit difficult to operate it but at the same time it was
very popular among people who were used to it.
This was the case until Nokia and Microsoft joined hands to work together. The
latest Windows release by Microsoft is known as Windows 7 which has gained
immense popularity among all kind of users. With its colorful and user-friendly
interface, it has given Windows OS a new life and is currently in demand all over
the world. Another reason behind its success is that this latest OS is used in very
powerful devices made by Nokia. The computer like look has totally vanished
from the windows phones with the release of Windows 7. Samsung and HTC also
released some Windows-based phones, but they could not many places in the
market.
Nokia Lumia series is completely windows based. Some of the latest Windows
Phones are Nokia Lumia 800, Nokia Lumia 900, Samsung Focus and HTC Titan 2.

Bada
Like others, Samsung also owns an operating system that is known as BADA. It is
designed for mid-range and high-end smartphones. Bada is a quiet user-friendly
and efficient operating system, much like Android, but unfortunately Samsung did
not use Bada on a large scale for unknown reasons.
The latest version Bada 2.0.5 was released on March 15th, 2012. There are only
three phones that are operating on Bada. These three smartphones are Samsung
Wave, Samsung Wave 2 and Samsung Wave 3. I believe that Bada would have
achieved much greater success if Samsung had promoted it properly.

4. What is a platform?
A platform is a group of technologies that are used as a base upon
which other applications, processes or technologies are developed.
In personal computing, a platform is the basic hardware (computer)
and software (operating system) on which software applications can be run.
Computers use specific Central Processing Units (CPUs) that are designed to
run specific machine language code. In order for the computer to run software
applications, the applications must be in that CPUs binary-coded machine
language. Thus, historically, application programs written for one platform
would not work on a different platform.
A computer platform generally means the operating system and
computer hardware only. The platform conforms to a set of standards that
enable software developers to develop software applications for the platform.
These same standards allow owners and managers to purchase appropriate
applications and hardware. Thus, if you want to run a bookkeeping program on
your computer, you will need to purchase a bookkeeping software application
that was developed for the platform on which you will be using it.
New standards-based interfaces and open interfaces allow
applications programs to run on multiple platforms. Additionally, software
developers have developed software tools that allow applications to run on
multiple platforms. This has given rise to the terms cross-platform software
and multi-platform software.
Newer web browsers allow third party plug-ins to be run as part of
the browser. Therefore some browsers are now spoken of as platforms since
they are used as a base on which to run other applications software programs.
An example of a computing platform is a modern laptop running
Windows as an operating system. Other examples would be an Apple
computer running the Mac OS X operating system.

5. Best Smart Phone OS.

Currently, Android is one of the top operating systems and
is considered serious threat for iPhone. Some of the smartphones operating
on Android are HTC Desire, Samsung Galaxy Gio, Motorola Droid Razr, Samsung
Galaxy S3 and HTC Wildfire. iOS was introduced in 29th June 2007 when the first
iPhone was developed.
In the many years since Android, iOS and Windows for Mobile (as it used
to be called) have been powering devices everywhere, the way they each look
and function has changed significantly.

6. How to select user friendly Mobile OS?

One of the most important things to consider when choosing
a smartphone is what type of Operating System (OS) the phone is going to use to
function. This is going to determine the look and feel of the phone as well as its
abilities as a smartphone. The OS (Operating System) of your new Smartphone
comes pre-installed on your phone and is the software that basically allows your
phone think and processes information and when it comes to Smartphones there
are a few operating systems that stand out from the rest. Chances are youll end
up reviewing and choosing from one of the operating systems listed below.

Apple OS
The Apple OS is the operating system found on Apple products like the iPod Touch,
iPad and of course the popular iPhone which is of course the device that youre going
to be interested in as a mobile phone.
Apple is a pretty solid operating system which is very user friendly and has a pretty
good app market. Apples app (application) market is a pretty secure marketplace and
has an extremely wide selection of apps to choose from. The iPhone is one of the
most popular smartphones in the world and if you are deciding on a smartphone to

choose from then the iPhone is certainly one of the smartphones that you should take
a look at.

Android
The Android operating system isnt found on Smartphones produced by a single
manufacturer, its an open source operating system released by the mighty Google.
This means that you can find the Android OS on smartphones produced by many
different manufactures including Samsung, HTC, LG, Motorola, Sony, Huawei and
many more. Android phones come in a wide range of products and have a wide
selection to choose from which range in quality as well as price. Make sure to do some
research when choosing an Android smartphone. While many Androids are similar as
they run on the same software not all Androids are created equally.
As far as the Android platform as a whole not many operating systems can stand up to
Apples iPhone but the Android OS does, even passing it in some areas in my opinion
but.
One of the greatest features of the Android OS is the applications found on its
marketplace, now known as the Google Play Store. Because of the idea of 3 rd party
programs being allowed without the more strict approval process that iPhone
developers have to go through for quality control (which is a good thing of course but
it does have its advantages and disadvantages) the app marketplace for Android
phones has an extremely wide range of apps available, many of which are free. And I
dont know about you but free is always in my price range.
Now because of this less strict policy it is a give and take kind of situation. You may
have access to a wider selection of games and apps on Android smartphones and yes
many of them are free or extremely affordable but because of the open source
philosophy (which is awesome) almost anyone has the opportunity to create an app
for the Android Play Store. Because of this some apps might not be written as well as
others which can lead to slight complications or issues on your phone.
It also takes time to develop these applications so many of the free apps come with
minor ads unless you buy the full version (which has become a common practice on
just about any smartphone platform these days and isnt just on Android). As long as

you just keep an eye on the apps you download and you download apps from the
official Google Play Store you should be fine. If you download an app and your phone
starts acting strange all you should need to do is uninstall the app you downloaded
and not use it any more.
Not only is the Android operating system powerful but because its open source it is
very customizable. If youre a tech geek who likes to tinker with things in order to
unlock their full potential then Android is likely going to be the phone of choice for
you.
Currently Android smartphones are the number one selling smartphone in the world by
a huge margin being both easy to use and available through many different
manufactures. Just remember that when purchasing an Android smartphone the
manufacture that made the phone is going to play a big role in the quality of the
phone. When it comes to smartphones the term you get what you pay for is often
very accurate. So shop around when making your decision and try to go for quality
more than affordability.

Windows
Windows run by Microsoft another powerhouse when it comes to software the
Windows 7 and Windows 8 operating system offers many of the powerful features
found on the other two operating systems already mentioned above such as automatic
backups to your Windows Live ID (a free service) which is much like the Android
backup to Google. Windows phones also offer the cloud service which allows you to
save your smartphones information online. Imagine taking a picture on your phone
and it then showing up on your computer when you get home. Isnt technology
awesome!
As a whole the user interface of a Windows phones is very different than its
competitors. Instead of shortcut icons on its home page (much like a standard
computer has icons on its desktop) and the standard appearance which both the iOS
(Apples iPhone) and Android smartphones use for their home screens Windows phones
use a tile interface which is actually very clean and user friendly.
