Describe a time you needed to use imagination

You should say:
what the situation was;
why you needed to use imagination;
what the difficulties were;
and explain how you felt about it.

BAND 8.0 SAMPLE ANSWER:

I would like to talk about the time I had to get out of my comfort zone to
join an Innovation Challenge Contest which made me think out of the box and
work flat out to become the runner-up.
This annual contest is open to all undergraduates and post-graduates around the
world. Each year this contest draws the attention of more than 30 000 people so
it was really competitive and challenging for me. Therefore, when I was
awarded the runner-up prize, I was deliriously happy and extraordinarily
excited.
The goal of the Challenge was to recognize individuals and organizations that
were working on internet-based solutions to promote education and economic
empowerment in countries throughout the world. Therefore, it really
required creativity and imagination from each team joining the contest. I had to
buckle down and brainstorm ideas for the challenge until I came up with the
best one to be accepted for 4 consequent rounds.
At the end of the day, my team and I had really gone extra miles to become
the runners-up and it was really an unforgettable experience to me. After all, I
can take pride in myself for all the thing I achieved with my imagination and
creativity.

Vocabulary:

Get/Step out of the comfort zone: Do things that you wouldnt normally do

dont think any of them could handle it.

2.Describe a time when you are very busy

You should say
When it was
What you had to do during that time
How you managed it
And explain how you felt about being busy

BAND 8.0 SAMPLE ANSWER:

One such busy time I really remember was the time when I had the deadline
to submit my thesis paper which is the ultimate assignment to gain a Master
Degree in International Relations.
This thesis paper is of great importance to me because it will decide whether I
can get through the master course with flying color or not. I had just 1 month to
complete my thesis paper but I had a full-time job which accounted for 8 hours
per day so I had hardly few hours left for this graduation paper. I was also a
procrastinator who always waits until the last minute to do anything which
made me fall behind my schedule for my thesis paper submission.
Moreover, the thesis was really complex and challenging, therefore, I had tons
of tasks waiting for me to be carried out such as collecting data for the report in
the thesis, doing group discussions to brainstorm good ideas for the thesis and
surfing high and low to collect information online as references for the thesis. I
even didnt have time left for my personal stuff. To be more specific, I did not
spend time on visiting my parents for the whole month even though they were
in the same town. I couldnt also visit some close friends, maintain my social
networking profiles and update my blog. I did not feel good about it so it was
particularly stressful to me.

However, I knew that I had to stay motivated and productive to get through this
hard time. I worked flat out and put a lot of time and effort into it to meet
worked flat out and put a lot of time and effort into it to meet tight deadlines
and get the best results for the thesis paper. For the sake of that, I got a

straight A in my thesis, continued my job and did well in my term final. I had
to sacrifice a lot and maintain a strict routine and stop lots of my other activities
that I usually do. At the end of the day, it was well worth the effort and time!

3.Describe a person who you have met and want to know more about
You should say
Who this person is
When and where you met
What you did or talked about

BAND 8.5 SAMPLE ANSWER:

Im going to talk about an acquaintance who Ive recently met at my local
English club. His names Dave and hes about the same age as me, I mean
most people would agree that he looks quite young for his age, I think its
mainly due to his hairstyle.
Dave has recently completed his postgraduate degree at Melbourne University
in Australia and hes currently looking for a job in Vietnam, well, he told me
that he would like to become an IELTS teacher, despite the fact that he holds an
MBA, I guess teaching English has always been one of his passions.
I have to say that I dont know him really well, because we only had a few brief
conversations at the local English club, but he seems like a fascinating person
that I would like to get to know better in the future.
Anyway, when it comes to his personality.
Honestly, as Ive said earlier, weve only had a few brief conversations, so I
dont know him really wellHowever, I would guess that hes a very friendly
and approachable individual, in fact, he actually made an effort to break the
ice because I was just too shy to strike up a conversation.
Well, in terms of the core reasons why I think we could get along quite well

Firstly, we are both passionate about English, actually, he had just scored a band
8 in his IELTS test and it would be great if he could give me all the advice that I
need to be at the same level. Secondly, Im also planning to study abroad in
Australia, so he would be the ideal person to lead me
in the right direction, you know., likeenrolling into the right course, getting a
part-time job and so on.

4.Describe a tall building in your hometown you like or dislike

You should say
Where this building is
What it looks like
What it is used for
And explain why you like or dislike
Model Answer 1:
Buildings are strange things, they are easy to take for granted if they are the
ones you live near to and pass by every day, but some buildings are really
remarkable, and not always for outwardly obvious reasons. It would be easy to
pick an unusual building that has an extraordinary external architecture, and of
course, they can be remarkable, impressive and on occasion beautiful. However,
the building I want to talk about is certainly unusual, unique even, but you
wouldnt necessarily know this unless you went inside.

So Ill tell you where it is and what it looks like, why I went there, and explain
what it is that makes it so rare.

The building is in Sheffield where I live. It is a large tower block and as well as
being the second tallest building in the city I am told it is the tallest university
building in the UK. It is known as 'The Arts Tower', because those are the
subjects that were originally taught inside its four walls. Degrees like modern
languages, philosophy and other Humanities disciplines. It is a classic 60s

tower, twenty stories high and constructed of concrete and glass. Honestly, its
not particularly attractive - not in my eyes anyway, though it is typical of that
era in architectural terms. Even so, it is something of a local landmark, because
it is so high you can see it from almost anywhere in the city. It has so many
glass windows that in certain lights the building seems to change colour as they
reflect the light of the skies outside. It can look like burnished gold in sunset, or
in the dark, when the internal lights are on, it is lit up like a Christmas Tree. I
wouldnt call it beautiful, but it is striking. However, these factors, though
interesting, arent what make the building so unusual. The reason I made a
special visit to see inside it, is because of what lies within

The building was constructed with a really rare and unusual elevator. Its called
a Paternoster Lift, and before I moved to Sheffield Id never even heard of one.
They are a little tricky to describe, but Ill have a go! Essentially, a paternoster
lift is a passenger elevator which consists of a chain of open compartments
(each usually designed for two persons) that move slowly in a loop up and down
inside a building without stopping. Passengers can step on or off at any floor
they like, but the lift just keeps moving so they have to be quick! There are no
sliding doors to shut you in the elevator, you just step in the opening and stand
in it until it reaches the floor you want, when you carefully step out as the chain
of boxes just carries on in slow but continuous motion. The design is pretty
ancient, going back to the 1880s, so at the time they were first created they must
have seemed extraordinarily innovative, but now the lift is unusual because it is
such historic engineering. Very few of the lifts survive because of safety
concerns - the continuous motion and open doors means people can fall going
in and out, and a few years ago someone was actually killed using one getting
caught in the mechanism somehow as the compartment they were in
transitioned from going up one side to going down in the loop the other at the
top of the lift. Sheffield, however, has kept its paternoster lift and kept it in
working order too. I think it might be the largest one in the world, at 38 separate
compartments (or maybe they should be called carriages), but it is definitely the
largest in the UK.

I made a special visit to the building to try out the lift with a friend. In such a
technological age where we take things like escalators even flying for granted,

it was a strangely unsettling experience. It actually took a little while to pluck

up the courage to step into the moving platform as it passes by as you have to
time your entrance quite carefully. Similarly, you need to judge it carefully
getting off, too slow and there isnt time to jump before you are taken off to the
next floor, too fast and you might bump your head as the opening isnt quite
clear. There is a definite knack to it! It was like travelling back in time, you
could imagine people in Victorian times in England being astonished at such
extraordinary technology, it is impressive now it must have been mindblowing then!

So I think this building is unusual because it contains a piece of living history. A

working paternoster lift that is possibly unique in size, and certainly extremely
rare. The building also has a couple of conventional elevators now, as well as
stairs for people to use. However, the paternoster lift is still there, turning
slowly, and it is quite fun to have a ride, like travelling back in time on an
ancient fairground ride! The building is also a rather literal reminder that you
shouldnt make assumptions only by what is most obvious you just wouldnt
know from the unpromising exterior of the Arts Tower what lies within!
Sometimes if you look beneath the surface a little, very remarkable things
emerge. Hence the saying dont judge a book by its cover!

Describe a person/something that made you laugh

You should say:
What made you laugh
Where you were when it happened
Who you were with
And explain why it made you laugh

Model Answer:
The funny incident that I remember happened was almost 2-3 years ago that I
would like to describe.

That time I was a student in a university and I was in my 7th semester. We had a
group assignment and to collect data we went to some libraries after our class.
In the evening, I found that my group members are complaining that they are
hungry and they need to have some foods.

I found them entering in a restaurant and I went with them. One of my

classmates ordered some foods directly to the waiter without looking at the
menu and after we are done with our foods, I noticed that one of the group
mates is asking the group leader to pay the bill. The group leader was astonished
as he had not offered the meal and said that he did not have the money to pay
the bill. I asked the waiter to bring the bill and we were thundered to look at the
amount. It was much higher than the usual price. Though we were bit worried,
but we started laughing and enjoying the whole thing. One of the classmates
offered to collect all of our money and then pay the bill. We looked at our
wallets, pockets & bags and collected the whole amount. There were so many
changes and coins there that we had to calculate 2-3 times. But to our surprise,
the total amount is still not sufficient to pay the bill.

We started laughing and I proposed to two of the groupmates to give their cell
phones and wrist watched as the alternatives of the bill. These two group mates
got serious and were protesting that these would be an insane idea. Rest of us
started enjoying their reaction as we found that they have actually taken this
seriously. One of your group mates proposed that we should pay the amount we
have with us and ask the manager of the hotel to allow us time to pay the rest of
the amount. I told them that manager would not allow that and would call the
police! We enjoyed the event, the dubious looks on some of your classmates and
the fact that 2-3 of them have taken the whole thing very seriously and are
actually got anxious.

We stayed there for about 1 hours and notices that people around us were giving
surprising looks as we something very funny and interesting is going on among
us. One of my group mates' house was nearby and he proposed that he would go
home and bring the money and in the meantime, we would stay there until he

arrives. We agreed and waited for him another20 minutes or so. In the
meantime, one of the boys told that the classmates who left wont come back!
We laughed at the idea and acted as if it's going to happen for real. After our
classmates returned from home, he paid the bill (with some tips as well!) and
then we left the restaurant.

We then left for our home and I took a taxi and paid the taxi fare from my home.
I told the story to other classmates next day and they found it very funny and
interesting as well. This event became famous in our class and we often
mentioned the funny things happened that day among us.

Describe an interesting song you like
You should say:
What it is
Which country the song comes from
What story the song tells
And explain why you think it is interesting

Band 9.0 Sample Answer

I love listening to music, so I like a multitude of songs. However, one of my

favorite songs that I want to talk about today is Hall of Fame by The Script
and Will.i.am. This song was written for the 2012 Olympic Games.

When it came out, it quickly became a hit on every single music chart
throughout the world, not just because of its catchy melody, but also for its
meaningful lyrics. The song talks about how each of us can be a champion or
anything we want to be as long as we dedicate our time and efforts to doing
what we are passionate about. The song is played at big athletic events to pump
up the crowd, but you can easily relate to the song at other times as well,
especially when you are about to give up.

I think this song has such a powerful message that whenever I was tired or had
decided to quit, it would lift me up right away. It made me think about why I
had started in the first place and that I needed to finish the job that I was
currently doing.

VOCABULARY:

became a hit: when a song becomes a hit, it means that it is super popular and
that people are listening to it on the radio and buying it on iTunes or elsewhere.
Example: Taylor Swifts song Bad Blood became a hit instantly.

catchy melody: the melody is the part that you sing along with and if it is
catchy, it means that it is easy to sing along with and people like it, you easily
remember it and it sticks in your mind.
Example: The song Uptown Funk has a catchy melody that people love to
sing.

meaningful lyrics: lyrics are the words in a song and if they are meaningful, it
means that they actually mean something or have some sort of importance or
significance; they arent just silly, meaningless words.
Example: His sister writes meaningful lyrics for her songs.

champion: someone who wins, a winner.

Example: He didnt see himself as a champion until he had reached his goals.

dedicate: to commit your time to doing something; to make a promise to

yourself to do something.
Example: You were able to get a high score on the test because you dedicated 2
hours every day to studying and preparing yourself.

effort: the work that you put into doing something.

Example: The time and effort he spent improving his English paid off when he
got a $10,000 raise.

passionate: if you are passionate about something it means you have a strong
desire to do something or a strong interest in something.
Example: Elite athletes are passionate about their sport and want to become the
best.

played at: to play a song at an event means to broadcast it over loudspeakers so

everyone can hear it.
Example: They always play the song We Are the Champions at basketball
games.

to pump up the crowd: to get the people excited about the game or event.
Example: The cheerleaders tried to pump up the crowd during the football
game.

relate to: to see yourself in something or to understand it in a personal way.

Example: She can relate to the lyrics of that song about love and loss.

give up: to quit; to stop doing something.

Example: He decided to give up smoking after 10 years.

quit: to stop doing something; to give up.

Example: She convinced her son not to quit the soccer team.

lift me up or lift someone up: to make someone feel better.

Example: His brother is good at lifting others up when they are feeling down.

Describe a creative inventor or musician

You should say:
Who this person is
What this person does
How he knew this person
And explain why you think this person is creative

Band 8.5 Sample Answer:

Im going to talk about a musician/songwriter that I admire, called Adam

Levine. Hes also a singer who plays the guitar and writes his own songs. I think
he recorded his first album about 10 years ago with his band called Maroon 5,
and hes released several other CDs since then.

He became successful after many years of writing songs and performing live in
small venues all over the country. Gradually he built a following of people who
liked his music. I think the key to his success was one of his songs that was used
on a TV advertisement. This meant that more people became aware of his
music.

I found out about Adam because one of my friends got tickets to see him in
concert. I hadnt heard any of his music before, but I went along to the gig and
really enjoyed it. After that I bought the first CD, and now Ive got all of them.

The reason Im into Adam is that he has worked hard for his success: it takes
years of practice to become a good singer and guitarist, and he spent several
years playing to very small audiences before he became successful. I also like
the fact that he writes his own music. I admire people who have worked hard to
get where they are.

Describe a time you missed an appointment for something

You should say:
When and where it happened
What the appointment was for
What happened when you missed it
And explain how you felt about missing the appointment

Band 8.5 Sample Answer:

I missed my first job interview two years ago because of my carelessness. Once
I lost it, I feel regret for that late even today.

At that time, as a fresh graduate, an interview appointment is valuable. I applied

for Unilever as Sale executive, one of the best global companies with dynamic
working environment and good benefits. I waited for about two months after
attending at the IQ written test. I received an email announcing that I was one
the tenth applicants who successfully passed the test. I was overjoyed when they
asked me to join at the formal interview. However, I lost that chance.

The appointment was at sharply 14:00 which I thought would be at 4pm. Thus, I
planned to celebrate my friends birthday around 2pm and leave her house
around 3pm for the interview because the journey would take around 45
minutes.

I prepared for the interview carefully and left my friends house a little bit early
as the city I live in has several serious problems of traffic jam. Unfortunately, it
started to rain and the bus came late around 3.15pm. The traffic was very bad so
the bus was moving very slowly due to the unavoidable traffic jam under heavy
rain. At that time, I received a call from the company. With an angry voice, the
authority informed that I missed the appointment and lost the opportunity to
work at Unilever. Initially, I felt that my luck is not favoring me and felt a deep
sense of anger because I thought it was not my fault but the traffic congestion.
However, when I checked email again, I felt pity for me as I could not go to the
appointment in time.

It becomes my invaluable experience. Since then, I always read emails and note
down carefully the schedule.

Describe a sport stadium thats important in your city

You should say:
Where it is
How often you go there
What people do there

And explain why you think it is important

Band 8.5 Sample Answer:

The My Dinh National Stadium is one of the biggest stadiums in Vietnam which
plays an important role not only for domestic sport events but also international
ones. Therefore, as Hanoi people, I am so proud of this stadium.

I still remember back to 2003, the My Dinh National Stadium was the main
venue for the Southeast Asian Games and was a hosting place for the opening
and closing ceremony. The My Dinh National Stadium has a capacity of more
than 40,000 seats; therefore, at that time, thousands of Vietnamese and visitors
from different countries were there. It was gorgeous with fireworks and the
whole stadium was filled with colorful light and music.

It is a multi-functional stadium with a football pitch, athletic competitions

combined with curve run, straight line running, jump pitches, throw pitch, etc.
Besides, there are training facilities for the teams with two convenient football
training grounds next to the stadium.

My Dinh Stadium is also a place hosted AFF Suzuki Cup, AFC Champions
League, V-League or VFF Cup. Most significantly, in 2013 and 2015, the
stadium held an international friendly football match between Vietnam and
Arsenal and another match between Vietnam and Manchester City, respectively.
Therefore, My Dinh Stadium becomes more and more important in Vietnam.

Describe an area of subject that you are interested in

You should say:
What it is

When it started to become interested in it

What we have learned from it
And explain why you have interest in it

Band 8.5 Sample Answer:

Biology is my favorite subject. Thanks for learning biology, I have a deep

insight about living life around me from a tiny baterium to a complex human.
Among different organisms, I love to elucidate the intricate mechanisms in
plants.

Why am I interested in plant biology? Well, its hard to explain. Plants, even
though they are unable to move and speak, they are living things. They have
their own language and have a wonderful life. Have you ever asked yourself
that why plants are the only organism that have upground part and ground part?
It is because carbon dioxide, light and water are the main sources for plants to
grow. Water is obtained from soil through a complex root system. Roots keep a
plant anchored tightly to the soil as well. Water moves up the plants stem to the
leaves. Sunlight and carbon dioxide are taken by leaves. Therefore, plants use
water, light energy and carbon dioxide to make glucose, a kind of sugar and this
is the food for plant to grow.

You see? Just a very simple example, plants are worth to study about. Thats
also a reason why I choose Plant Biotechnology as my major. By using
molecular technology, I can learn more inside of plant cells and discover the
mechanisms in plants. Thanks for understanding of plant biology, it is
applicable to manipulate and improve crop yield. It pours more and more
passion to me for my future career.

Describe a famous person in your country

You should say

Who this person is
How you know this person
What this person is famous for
And explain why you like this person

Describe an interesting or unusual thing you did recently (in your free
time)
You should say
What you did
When and where you did it
Who you did it with
And explain why you think it was interesting or unusual

Band 8.5 Sample Answer:

In all seriousness, between school and the office where I am working as an
intern, I barely have time for entertainment. Though, when I do, I take it
seriously. Once or twice, I managed to get out of the city and indulged myself in
secluded areas where Internet service and its distracting minions like social
media and advertising emails ceased to exist. My latest sweet escape was my
trip to Binh Ba island last summer.
Binh Ba was one of the four deserted, yet beautiful islands located in Khanh
Hoa province, Vietnam due to little exposure to tourism. This, however, would
change drastically within the next few years since Binh Ba had been drawing
lots of attention thanks to positive feedbacks from those who had wandered
there. I went here alone just to take a break from the fast-paced city life and

have time to contemplate myself, which I rarely do with people around. It had
been an intriguing 2-day journey with full of surprises. That was the first time I
traveled alone, first time riding on a speedboat, first time scuba diving and first
time having dinner with a life jacket on my back and water as my chair. Other
than that, seafood here was a bomb which came in different kinds and varieties.
People I met during my stay at a villagers house were ultra-friendly and
helpful, both locals and visitors whom shared their stories as though you were a
long lost friend stopping by to catch up. And there was nothing better than
enjoying great company over a nice meal and bonfire.
Binh Ba left an unforgettable impression on me where I learnt to appreciate
precious moments with those I cared about and be grateful for whatever life had
to offer. Life is tough but it would be lifeless without its toughness.

Describe an advertisement you have seen/heard recently

You should say:
When and where you saw it
What was advertised
What the contents of the advertisements were
And explain how you felt about it

Band 8.5 Sample Answer:

We have been bombarded with an array of information every single day.
Whether it is newspaper, television or social media like Facebook or LinkedIn,
the news always has their own way to reach us. One of the most frequent pieces
of news I have encountered these past few days is about Echelon Vietnam 2016
Discover Asias Next Dragon.
As an avid Facebook user, I scroll down my newsfeeds board practically every
30 minutes to stay abreast of every nuance of my social network circle.
Admittedly, there are some better things I can do but I just cant help myself.
Therefore, the fact that Echelon Vietnam 2016 repeatedly popped up on my
newsfeed really caught my attention. Some of my friends are already

interested in Echelon official page, others are even going. It piqued my

interest so much that I paid a visit to their page to figure out what their gig is.
As far as I am concerned, Echelon Vietnam 2016 is a 2-day international
technology and investment event for entrepreneurs and business leaders within
and outside Vietnam. Its appealing not only to big tech companies but tech
savvy individuals as well. The event aims to reach out to foreign investors,
raising funding opportunities and developing the tech and startup community in
Vietnam in the era where tech disruptions are leading almost every industry.
With some of the most brilliant and world-class speakers, attendees are going to
get some food for thought and inspiration during and after the event. I
personally believe that this could be a golden opportunity for Vietnam to shine
as a promising land where young and talented engineers, developers and
entrepreneurs are thriving non-stop toward a better future, a better life within
Vietnam and beyond. If I am able to schedule my time and afford the tickets, I
will definitely be there to enjoy the vibe and explore many potentials in this
rising industry.

Describe a bicycle/motorbike/car trip that is interesting

You should say:
Where you would like to go
How you would like to go there
Who you would like to go with
And explain why you would like to go there by car, motorbike or bike

Band 8.0 Sample Answer:

There is a thing that troubles me more often than not when living in Vietnam is
the majority of people are riding motorbikes rather than cars. As a result, most
people dont know how to drive a car, I included, which also itches me since I
have always wanted to take a road trip across the country. A road trip by car
from the south to the north of Vietnam would be tough, and adventurous even,
due to hundreds of marvelous destinations are awaiting to be explored.
However, it is worth to take risk and step out of your comfort zone to truly

experience what life has to offer when your legs can still drag you rather than to
regret in your later life. If you wanna go fast, go alone. If you wanna go far, go
together. It might be fun if you were a lone traveler and didnt enjoy getting
lagged behind your schedule. Still, the adventure could be more colorful and
unexpected, hopefully in a good way, when you got company, especially during
a long journey like this. Hence, picking up a close friend or two who share the
same viewpoints, the same eager desire to capture the beauty of Vietnam with
me would be my choice. We would start from the south where we are living and
move north on the go, stopping at our favorite beaches like Phu Quoc, Nha
Trang a little longer than other places because aint nobody dont have time
for juicy coconut and white sand paradise. Vietnamese cuisine would also be
our utmost priority whenever we reach a new place as there is no better way to
live like a local other than eat like a local and I really look forward for that. The
car would give us room to comfortably converse with each other and shelter
from inclement weather, if any. It is not about the destinations but also about the
time I would love to spend with my dear friends as we would share the same
space in a four-wheel vehicle along the road; because at the end of the day, its
people that matters.

Describe a sport that you prefer to do and is a little expensive

You should say
What it is
How much it usually costs
Who usually do it with
And explain why you like to do this activity

Band 8.0 Sample Answer:

Even though people say its quite costly, its meant for the rich, but I would love
to play tennis one day.

I knew just a bit about this sport, but its not too hard to estimate the price. As
an amateur, at least I should have a nice Nike or Adidas which up to now is
about 50 USD, not to mention other fancy sportswear like T- shirt, shorts and
socks. For equipment, bats, bat bags and also I should never forget safety
equipment, sadly, its said that the higher it costs the better, so Im gonna give it
around 200 USD. So that would be 250 USD in total. Quite expensive Im
afraid. Anyway, my dad, who is not only motivated, but also knowledgeable
about the sport, would definitely be my go-to partner. I guess the reason why
Im into this quite-expensive sport firstly is because of its intense, intensive
practice, intensive competitivenes, for example, which helps increase my
patience and focus. In addition, such independent sport meakes me feel
rewarded, feel proud because what Ive won actually is myself.

Describe someone who has a great influence on you

You should say:
Who this person is
How she knew this person
What influence this person has on you
And how you think of the influence

Band 8.0 Sample Answer:

For this topic, I would definitely talk about my best guy friend. Probably its his
personalities that not only makes me feel so proud to be a friend of his, but also
inspires me to improve myself.

The first characteristic that makes my friend special is that hes a typical
perfectionist. In almost any situation that he can come up with the best solution
and reasons why its the best. Sometimes I get a bit lost, his amazing analyzing

skill indeed helps get me through. Another characteristic that Ive found super
inspiring is his determination. Well, I suppose that most men are born
determined, however, my friend is a different story. He never gives up on things
hes really passionate about. For example, last semester, he slept only 30
minutes a day, 5 days a week continuously to get his group project done. In
addition, its not a big surprise that his name is always in top-student list. That
passion, that determination have encouraged me to keep moving forward.

Generally, for a great shift that he brought to my life, I am thankful for having
this friend.

Describe a website you like to visit

You should say:
When you found it
What it is about
How often you visit it
Why you like this website

Band 8.0 Sample Answer:

There is no doubt that online source is essential for everyone nowadays. A vast
amount of information is instantly updated every second to meet our needs. For
me, in particular, Id like to check the website called Foody.vn almost everyday.

What I love about the website is a wide variation of food stores is introduced in
detail, including the price, the food available, the parking area and the service
offered. Posts can also be varied in terms of food, by which the reviewer
recommends their top five stores selling it; in terms of design concepts, by

which people can choose their favorite surrounding environment or those young
photographers can also come to practice and in terms of specific locations. Of
course different person has different taste, I also can to go through the
comments below or save many posts for references. What is more, the website
provides delivery service, which is a huge benefit for those who are living too
far away from the store.

For those reasons listed, Foody.vn is definitely one of the websites Id love to
visit daily.

REUSED TOPICS (Theses topics appeared in the actual speaking tests in May
August in 2016 but they are still kept for re-using)

Describe a difficult decision that you once made.

You should say:
What the decision was
How you made your decision
What the results of the decision were
And explain why it was difficult to make.

Band 8.0 Model Answer

Well, the most difficult decision Ive ever made was whether or not I should
study abroad next year. / Well, the most important conversation I had so far was
with my parents about whether or not I should study abroad next year.

In the recent couple of years, theres this growing tendency among high school
graduates to embark on a study abroad program. Ive always wanted to do the
same, because its a good opportunity to see the world, to experience different
styles education, and to improve my language skills. And for a girl who has
never been far away from home, studying in a foreign country might bring out
my independent nature. But I need to give it some careful thought before I could
make the decision. I told my parents who are both open-minded about my
plan, and they were pretty supportive, but they also pointed out some
disadvantages. My mom told me that being in a new place by myself could be
overwhelming sometimes, and it tests my ability to adapt to diverse situations.
And its highly possible that I would feel lonely and helpless every so often,
because all of my close friends and family members are on the other side of the
world. I would be completely on my own, and basically everything I took for
granted in the past would then be a challenge, like paying bills, opening bank
accounts, communicating with fellow students, and the list goes on and on.

All of a sudden, I felt stuck. All those challenges sounded terrifying, but I really
didnt want to miss this great chance to broaden my horizon and learn more
about other cultures around the world. I weighed up the pros and cons carefully,
and after some serious consideration, I finally made up my mind to seize the
opportunity to go abroad for study.

Describe an item that you received and made you happy

You should say
When you received it
What the item was
Who gave it to you
And explain why you felt happy

Band 8.5 Sample Answer:

I would like to describe a coat my parents gave me as a present on my 18th

birthday. I must say that it is really smart and exactly to my liking.

The coat is made of cotton only and by a Vietnamese clothes brand. It is a kneelength black coat, which was in fashion at that time. What I like the most is that
there are two deep side pockets, so in winter, I always put my hands into those
pockets to avoid the cold. Besides, I can button the coat from top to bottom and
its also got a decorative waist belt.

I am so fond of this coat that I usually wear it every winter. It fits me perfectly
and makes me feel comfortable and warm, no matter how cold the weather is. I
keep myself warm by wearing the coat with jeans and boots, which match it
well.

In fact, I have never thought whether it will be out of fashion. As this coat is a
gift from my parents, I treasure it a lot and for sure I will keep wearing this
coat in the future.

Describe a person who once moved to live with you

You should say:
When and where this person moved in
How you know -.his person
How you got along with this person
And how you feel about living with this person

Model Answer

Well, Im going to talk about a person who is one of my flatmate in Australia.

Her name is Linda. Possibly, she is one of the best friends of mine who lived
with me.

First, I would love to talk a little bit about the time and the place where she
lived in. It was in a very freezing Sunday night around 2 or 3 degree Celsius. In
the very heart of the winter, I mean in July, there was a girl struggling with
loads of luggage knocking at the door of my house. She said hi to everyone in a
very humble way. This is a sort of the scenario of how I got to know her.

There should be a fate between us, I reckon. What I mean fate here is by
accident we got to know each other and we are at the same hometown back in
India and we used to live in the same area in India when both of us were going
to a university in Mumbai. But we just run across with each other only in
Australia.

Moving onto the next point, I would like to approach the idea of our
relationship. To be honest, we were not in a very good harmony initially
because of some misunderstandings and conflicts during the time we lived in
under the same roof, shared the rent, bills and time clash. But gradually, we
discovered out that we have a lot of common interests and characteristics.

Living with her is quite enjoyable because we could share lots of things
together, but did not have to worry about bothering each other in the daily life.

Describe an interesting tradition in your country

You should say:
What the tradition is
When do you celebrate it
How do you celebrate it

And explain why it is interesting

Model Answer

India is rich in culture and tradition. The tradition Im going to talk about today
is saying namastey. We celebrate this tradition every day, in fact several times
a day.

This is our way of greeting each other. We do it by folding our hands, palms
facing each other, fingers pointing towards the ceiling, thumbs pointing towards
the chest and this is accompanied by a slight bow.

This tradition is interesting because this is the biggest export of our traditions to
the western culture. When I say namastey, I mean to say that I am your humble
servant. It creates an aura of respect which is far more than saying hello or
shaking hands.

It is said that the human body is composed of immense energy. We can turn it
into a positive or negative energy. When we shake hands we transfer positive as
well as negative energy. But when we fold hands, we transfer only positive
energy. When we greet another person with namastey we have no physical
contact because of this the other person cant be affected negatively. Whenerver
anyone comes to our house, we always say Namastey, no wonder this word has
been adopted by all the English language dictionaries.

Describe an important skill you learned when you were a child

You should say:
What this skill was
When you learned it
How you learned it
And explain why you think it was important

Model Answer for IELTS Speaking Part 2

One of the most useful skills I have learnt since I was a 10-year-old child is
typing on a keyboard without looking at that is a special skill.

When I was 10 years old, my father bought me a computer, it was impossible

for me to type without looking at the keys. It took longer hours for me to type a
single page by searching the letters on the keys. When I started to type, it
appeared to me that the letters should be placed on the keyboard alphabetically

for better use. But gradually I learnt that this way is better than the alphabetical
letters.

Basically I learnt the skill at my home using my personal computer. In the very
beginning, it was tougher for me to compose anything on the computer with the
keyboard attached with it and it took longer hours for me to compose a
document of three or four pages. So, I started using internet to get some ways to
learn typing. I found some special applications that allow the users to get the
desired typing skill. Besides, the applications also helped me to make the typing
faster than it was in the beginning.

All of the earned skills are useful in real life but the applications may differ in
situations. When I started learning the skill, I thought that it would be of no use
in my practical life and I am wasting my times. But when I took part in my
work, I was surprised by the applications of typing. I have started serving the
office in different ways with the typing skill. As a result, my fame has increased
as a typing expert and accordingly the office has evaluated my performance. I
have been promoted to senior administrative officer after three months when I
applied the skill to my daily works at the workplace. So, it appears to be a very
useful skill for me.

Describe an activity that you do in your school after school

You should say:
When and where you do
What you like to do
Who you do it with
And how you feel about it

BAND 8.0 SAMPLE ANSWER:

An activity that I like to do in my school after finishing school is playing

badminton which I started to do since I was in 6th grade.

It is actually a badminton class, so we have teachers and other students too. We

practice badminton here for an hour. Sometimes, we even stay there for another
half an hour. Just like tennis, you can play badminton as a singles match or
doubles match. The rules are pretty much the same as tennis. The only
difference is that the badminton shuttlecock is lighter than the tennis ball, thus,
it requires less strength.

Due to my short-sightedness, I am not very good at playing this game but I

enjoy it anyway. Firstly, it helps keep me fit. In addition, I can train my eyes to
look further and faster, and it quickens my reflexes. Last but not least, it helps
me a lot in improving my teamwork skills.

VOCABULARY:

badminton: [noun] an indoor game. Players hit a small light ball, with feathers
round it, across a high net, using a racket, like tennis.
Example: A net in badminton is much higher than in tennis, and the ball and
rackets are smaller and not as heavy.

singles match: [noun] a game in which one player plays against one opponent.
doubles match: [noun] a game in which two players play against two opponents.
Example: She won the womens singles gold medal in tennis in the Olympic
Games. Then, playing with her friend, they won the womens doubles gold
medal by defeating two American opponents.

shuttlecock: [noun] badminton uses a shuttlecock, not a tennis ball. It is very

light and it has feathers round the edge.
Example: Players hit the shuttlecock across the net in badminton.

short-sightedness: [noun] a person who can only see things if they are very
close, is short-sighted.
Example: I need glasses for reading, because of my short-sightedness.

train my eyes: [verb phrase] I developed my ability to see things quickly and
accurately.
Example: The detective trained his eyes to look for small but important details
at the scene of the crime.

quickened my reflexes: playing badminton improved my ability to move and

think quickly when I played the game.
Example: Many people say that video games quicken your reflexes and you
become more expert.

Describe a method that helps you save money

You should say:
What the method is
When you started to use it
How you knew it
and explain why it is helpful

Band 8.0 Model Answer for IELTS Speaking Part 2

Well, I have to admit that It has been so difficult for me to figure out simple
ways to save money and use my savings effective to pursue my financial goals
before. But its so lucky for me when I complained about it to my friend, she
suggested me using Money Lover, a useful mobile application to
most useful one. Thanks to that, I am better at money management.

Let me tell you about it in more detail. The symbol of the app is a very cute
piggy bank which impresses me a lot at the first sight. There are many expenses
for clothes, food, cosmetics divided so that at the end of the month, I can know
exactly what cost me a bomb, what are within my budget to tighten the belt next
month.

It is not an exaggeration to say that this way of saving money changes my life
for the better. I have used this app for 3 months and up to now, I have a
considerable savings in my banking account. To my surpise, my friends
consider me as a shining model for them to follow when it comes to talking
about money saving. This makes me so proud of myself. In addition, my mom

always got shirty with me for my wasting money but at the moment, she hardly
loses her temper anymore and we seem to have better relationship than in the
past.

If anyone asks which is the most effective way to save money, Money Lover
is definitely the first thing that comes to my mind. Trust me, it is really helpful.

Describe a positive change in your life

You should say:
What the change was
When it happened
How it happened
And explain why it was a positive change

Band 8.5 Sample Answer

The positive change that I would like to talk about is I started playing outdoor
games instead of playing computer games. After I got my first personal
computer when I was only 9 years old or so, I started learning many things.
Besides that I started playing the computer games. As computer games are
addictive I found that I was playing the games whenever I had spare times. This
addiction barred me from playing outdoor games like cricket, football etc.

I found myself very much attracted to the computer games and I preferred to
play the games at home instead of going to open spaces or fields to participate

in outdoor games that involve physical exercises. Not that computer games are
all so bad, but playing them all the time someone has got is not a good thing
especially for kids. I found that I was spending more times at home than being
outside. After my parents noticed that, they discussed with me about that and
explained me the importance of outdoor activities. They gave me strict
restriction that I would only be able to play computer games for an hour daily
and in the evening Id have to go outside to play with my friends.

This was obviously a very positive change for me. Im not against computer
games but I feel that if there are more important things to do, then we should
not spend time on computer games only.

This change affected me very positively. I became a good cricket player later
on, I started maintaining my times more prudently and I am sure this change has
affected me positively in terms of physical and mental health.

Describe a wedding you have been to

You should say:
Where it was
Who you went with
What you saw

And how you felt about the wedding

Band 8.5 Model Answer

Today, Im gonna share with you a wedding of my friend that I attended. Last
month, I received a wedding invitation from my old friend from primary school.
The wedding was held at the beginning of April. We have been close to each
other for over 15 years, therefore, I definitely wanted to attend at all costs, due
to the fact that we hadnt had a chance to get together for ages.

Her wedding ceremony took place at The Sum Villa, located near West Lake. It
was decorated impressively with a lot of lights, candles and flowers around the
room. There were three glamorous wedding photo albums, showing tables right
at the centre of the official gate. The principal colours were likely to be white
and violet, so all the guests were requested to wear clothes with one or both of
these colours. Personally, I wore a white dress with small accessories.

It was meant to be a casual wedding, which I had never attended before. It

turned out to be refreshingly informal. One of the best moments that really
touched me was when the bridegroom sang a song for the bride and all the
guests sang along with him. Also, he made a photo clip by himself marking their
4-year romance, to show to everyone in the room. It was no surprise that
everyone clapped their hands and cheered them. Of course, I was no exception.

It was also a good chance to catch up with my old friends and we all had a great
time. We definitely made the most of the occasion and took a lot of pictures
with the bride and the bridegroom. I gave my friend a gift to celebrate her
wedding day. I had given much thought to my wedding present when I was
choosing it, and I wished her lots of happiness for the future.

smartphone like Meditation, Tripadvisor, Ted, Lumosity, Dulingo, Wunderlist.
But maybe Money Lover is the most useful one and at the top of my list.

Let me tell you about it in more detail. The symbol of the app is a very cute
piggy bank which impresses me a lot at the first sight. There are many expenses
for clothes, food, cosmetics divided so that at the end of the month, I can know

Describe a situation that made you a little angry.

You should say:
What it was that made you angry
Where you were when this happened
What you were doing at the time
And explain why you felt angry.

BAND 8.0 SAMPLE ANSWER

A recent situation that made me angry was getting stuck in a traffic jam on the
way to meet some friends. It was last Sunday lunchtime, and I didnt expect
there to be much traffic; people dont work on Sundays, so the roads arent
usually very busy.

Everything was going well until suddenly I saw a queue of cars on the road in
front of me. I had no choice but to join the queue and wait to get past whatever
was causing the delay. It turned out that it was caused by some roadworks, and
it took me an extra 30 minutes to get past them.

Getting stuck in traffic congestion doesnt usually make me angry, but this time
it did, mainly because I wasnt expecting it and I knew that my friends were
waiting to meet me for lunch. I felt frustrated and powerless because there was
nothing I could do to change the situation, and I had no idea how long I would
be sitting there waiting. When I finally saw the reason for the congestion, I was
relieved that I was close to getting past the roadworks, but I still felt a bit
stressed knowing that I was half an hour late.

Describe a (short) journey that you disliked

You should say:

Where you went
Who you went with
What you did
And explain why you disliked this journey

BAND 8.5 Sample Answer:

I recently had a journey I wish I hadnt bothered with. I decided to do some

shopping in the capital city. But I had lent my car to a friend for a couple of
days and so I thought it would be quite fun to hop on a bus for a change because
its something I havent done for a long time. So I thought that I would set off
early and get it done in a couple of hours and be back in time for lunch. The
shopping wasnt anything urgent, it was just that I had some free time that
particular morning and thought it would be nice to do something different.

However, the journey did not go as planned. It was a really hot day and when
the bus finally arrived and I got on, it was clear that the air conditioner wasnt
working. Whats more, the bus was packed with people, so within minutes I
began to feel hot and sticky and extremely uncomfortable.

But what happened next was even worse. After about twenty minutes of
traveling the bus started to make some really weird noises and eventually the
driver pulled over and told us that there was a problem and that we couldnt
continue. We had to wait for another twenty five minutes or so for the next bus
to arrive behind us and then we all got off the first bus and got on the second
bus. The second bus already had some passengers on it, and with all of us from
the first bus as well there was only room to stand. The whole experience was

rapidly turning into something I was beginning to seriously regret. What had
started out as something supposedly fun and different was quickly becoming
one of the worst trips ever. Eventually, we arrived in the city and I wasnt really
in a good mood to go shopping so I stopped at a caf to drink something and
just relax a moment before heading to the shops.

It really has to be one of the worst trips Ive ever made on a bus and now I wish
I had just waited until I had my car back; it would have been so much easier.

Describe an antique or an old object that your family has kept for a long
time.
You should say:
What it is
How your family first got this thing
How long your family has had it
And explain why it is important

Model Answer:

When it comes to an old thing I keep in my family, I want to talk about the
transformer that I got from my parents on my 10th birthday.

On that day, my parents bought me a transformer as a birthday gift. When I

opened the gift box, I was really astonished by what I was seeing in front of me.
It was an awesome transformer that I had been dreaming about for ages. The
moment I saw this transformer, I fell in love with it. It was pretty huge and
looked like a hip yellow car, and it could be shifted from a car to a robot action
figure and back again. The transformer had a really nice color scheme and

finish. And it came with a nice handgun like the weapon and different
accessories. It was super cool! And with the transformer, there was a card from
my parents saying, Sweetie, you mean everything in the world to us and you
are forever the apple of our eyes. Happy Birthday! Love parents. I am telling
you, although I was pretty young at that time, those words impressed me a lot.

Until today, I still keep this toy. It has been over ten years since I got it. I love it
not only because of the toy itself, but also because of the sentimental value it
has for me. The value is irreplaceable.

Describe a character or personality of yours

You should say:
What it is
How it affects your life
Where you get it from
And how you feel about it

BAND 8.0 SAMPLE ANSWER:

Its fairly tough to talk about someones own personality for I firmly believe
that the way we judge ourselves fundamentally differs from other people do.
Nonetheless, we all have our own idea about our own characteristics and I
would like to talk about my honesty which is also one of the characters I find
important and proud of.

Honesty is a great virtue and I am in favor of the viewpoint that If people could
remain honest during the lifetime, they will be rewarded in the long run. To be
honest, honesty inside me leads me to do everything with genuine sincerity.

Therefore, I am respected and adored by everyone and especially by my friends

and colleagues.

I think that I inherited this personal trait from my mother. In daily life, he also
reminds me to be honest in every aspect of my life and I would get through all
ups and downs and succeed in life.

Honesty never fails to make me feel better at work and my daily living. In other
words, Honesty has made everything for me. I earned the high-paid job because
my boss and colleagues always have faith in me. I have a happy family with
beloved parents and brother.

Thereby, honesty is truly the personal trait I take pride in myself and want to
share with you today.

It is the complete book. This book should be read more than one time. Various
methods to communicate with sub-conscious mind are discussed.
Communicating with Sub-conscious mind and getting miraculous results is not
a rocket science. Methods shown by Dr. Murphy are very practical, but require
some practice. One needs to practice them with full conviction.
Dr. Murphy has given answers to all types of questions like Why we get negative results instead of praying consistently
How can one heal oneself and others
Solve personal problems
Be at peace and harmony
Remove old bad habits and change thinking patterns
Negative thinking or destruction of thoughts or envy, etc results in manifestation
of disease
What you think, you become
... and many more
All this can be done by ourselves.
At times, Dr. Murphy has quoted verses from Bible interpreting them w.r.t to
understanding sub-conscious mind.

Reading and applying teachings of Dr. Murphy, one can be a better person and
the world can be in harmony with nature. There will be peace.

Describe a subject taught in your school.

Possible Answer:
The subject that I'd like to describe is Physics that was taught in our school. We
had this subject in each year of our high school and each year a new teacher
used to teach us the subject. Even we had to read physics in college as Science
was my major. I remember Mr Alex, Burter, John, David and Mrs Jeniffer took
Physics in different years. We were lucky to have good Physics teachers who
could make the subject interesting and enjoyable.
Our teachers used to tell us stories first and then would explain the theory,
experiment or math of the textbooks. They would then relate the story with the
study. Later they would explain us the real examples and facts. Sometimes they
used to take us to the Physics labs and explain how something works. I have
learned numerous things of physics from simple definition of mass to the
complex explanation of Einstein's Theory of Relativity. My foundation of
physics grew up and expanded with the help of those teachers.
The subject itself is utterly interesting if one can have a passion for it. It is one
such subject that one would start loving it if s/he starts understanding the
underlying concepts of it. Physics is all around us and the lesson I learned from
my School had helped me greatly throughout my higher academic years.
Describe a foreign country you have never been to
Possible Answer:
The country that I have always wanted to go but have not visited yet is Italy.
I've been dreaming of visiting Italy for more than 2-3 years. I'll definitely visit
the country as soon as my graduation is complete.
Italy is in Southern Europe. Rome, the largest city and the Capital of Italy has
been the leading political and religious centre of the western civilisation,
serving as the capital of the both Roman Empire and the Christianity. I'd like to
go there to see the museums, arts, streets, cultural and other attractions. Another
reason I want to go there is to visit the Vatican City. I have read and heard about
numerous stories and history about this country and witnessing them would be a

great joy for me. There are plenty of things to see: arts, museums, Colosseum,
Leaning Tower of Pissa, Roman Forum, Florence Cathedral, St. Peter's Basilica,
Milan Cathedral, Sistine Chapel, Piazza SanMarco, Circus Maximus and lots of
other places I'd love to visit.
Italy was one of the most advanced territories once and had lots of historically
significant places to visit. I've read about those places so many times and heard
stories from many of my friends that visiting this country has become a major
wish for me. And I'm pretty positive about visiting this country in next year.

A speech that somebody delivered and you heard.

Possible Answer 1:
I have heard numerous speeches, lectures, commentaries on various topics and
issues throughout different stages of my life and among them the speech that
was given by our primary school teacher on our farewell day is the most
influential one and I still vividly recall it. The teacher who gave the speech was
Mr. Mark Augustine and he was in his late forties at that time. As fifth-grade
school going kids, we did not comprehend quite clearly what was the school
farewell all about. We knew that this is going to be our last day at our primary
school and we would start our new school soon. Mr. Mark was already a revered
teacher for his teaching style, good manner, humour and honesty. Rumour had
that, he was much more qualified to be a college professor rather than being a
primary school teacher.
On the day, we had our parents present in school and we had been enjoying
everything. As part of the farewell speech, Mr. Mark approached to the stage
and started mentioning what funny things we had done in the last 5 years. We as
well as our parents started laughing on the things he mentioned. He mentioned
how a kid started screaming at the sight of a cockroach, how a kid of class two
expressed his friendship to a girl, how we tried to play amid of the class and
many more interesting and funny events.
He then moved on topics that I still hear in my mind. He told how studying is
our primary responsibility, how we should listen to our parents, how have we
achieved our liberation as a nation, how to respect the Mother Nature and all the

honesty and bravery we should possess in our heart. The topics and his way of
presenting them vibrated us heavily. I can still remember how the advice came
back to my life time to time. As a kid, those advice and moralities were
probably way to heavy to grasp but I still believe that the speech had a great
impact in my life as well as the lives of the other kids who were present there.

Describe an important decision that you made

Model Answer 1:
Decisions, decisions. Im not always good at making decisions. I worry about
making wrong choices, and often seek advice from friends to help me think
through the consequences of picking one option over another. Mind you, some
people say that we choose who to ask for advice depending on what advice we
want to hear. That might be true. Some decisions are easy to make perhaps
because all the possible options are good ones (like choosing a favourite
pudding) others seem to have no good options only least bad ones, those are
hardest to make. The important decision I can think of, and which Im going to
talk about today, worked out in the end, but it was terrifying to have to make at
the time.
Ill talk you through what the decision was, when I took it and what the results
were. Finally, Ill explain why it was so important that it still impacts on me
today.
The decision was whether or not I should relocate to a different part of the
country to take up a new job. I had to make the decision about 6 years ago. I had
been self-employed for a while, but then there was a downturn in the economy
and I stopped getting enough work to support myself. I applied for a job in
Sheffield, which was a city I didnt know at all, and when I had first an
interview, and then a job offer, I was faced with a big decision. Should I leave
my home and friends to start a new life in Sheffield for a promising job at a
prestigious university; or should I stay where I was in my lovely house and
familiar surroundings, and hope the work might pick up again in the future?
I thought a lot about the pros and cons; I cried a lot to be honest, as the thought
of making a new start was really scary. Id be all on my own, and what if I

didnt make friends or couldnt do the job well? However, ultimately it came
down to income. I couldnt live on fresh air, and this was a well-paid job. I also
thought if I turned the work down, and then didnt manage to pick up new
contracts Id always wonder what if? or how might things have been different
if Id just been brave enough to give it a go! I accepted the job and started to
pack. In less than three weeks I was renting a flat in a new city and turning up to
work in a new office with new colleagues. One resolution I made early on, was
to be really positive about the decision once Id made it. Id join societies, say
yes to every social invitation, and really try to build a new life quickly. I
wouldnt ever look back!
The result of the decision? Well, I moved to a new city, and took a new job. It
was hard at first, there was a lot to learn and sometimes it was lonely too.
However, Ive never regretted it. Sheffield is a lovely city near to beautiful
countryside. I've rented an attic flat which has great views over the city in one
direction and woodland in the other. I think this city must be one of the
friendliest ones in the UK, people were incredibly welcoming to me as a
newcomer, and there is always lots to do. I dont have that job anymore, but I
dont regret taking it at all. I do sometimes miss my old house in Leamington
where I used to live, but I dont miss anything else. I think the move revitalised
me and took me on a great new adventure, sometimes you do just have to take a
bit of a risk in life to progress, this bit of risk taking worked for me.
So in conclusion, I think it was a big decision, but I made a good choice. Of
course, it was an important one as it changed everything for me, from where I
lived and worked, to who my friends are. Honestly though, I think perhaps with
decisions it matters less what you decide, and more that once you have made a
decision you make the best of it, wherever it may take you. Sometimes the
journey is speedy and smooth, sometimes it is rocky along the way, but
whatever path we choose, it is what makes us the people we are for better or
worse!
Describe someone you know who is a good cook.
I know some of my relatives who are very good at cooking and I have heard
about some famous cooks, nationally and internationally, who have magical
powers of making delicious cuisines. But I'd like to talk about my mother whom
I think is the greatest cook of the world. I have never enjoyed any menu more

than the foods made by my mother. She is a gifted cook and she has a good
reputation of making delicious and tasty menus out of very ordinary ingredients.

The way she arranges the kitchen and makes foods is lovely and in my
childhood I used to think that she had taken training on cooking. But she
actually learned the cooking from her family and was in charge of cooking for a
large joint family. She is a graduate and I heard that she has a passion for
cooking as she took several subjects related to housekeeping and cooking.
My mother was raised in a suburban area and got married at her 20 years of old.
She continued her education and then took charge of cooking in my father's
family. I have heard the appreciation of her cooking from many of our relatives
and neighbours and felt proud of her.
Finding her cooking gives me a feeling that it's not a hard task, rather it's an
artistic performance that the performer enjoys a lot. Sometimes I have been
amazed to find her making foods in no times for the guests.
She mostly makes foods for the family members and that includes cooking
making bread, rice, meats, fishes, burgers, sweet-meats, curry etc. For the
festivals, she makes cakes, rich foods, and snacks, local and foreign cuisines. I
have found her cooking Chinese, Thai, Italian and Mexican foods as well and
that was always a wonder how she has learned those menus as she has never
travelled to those countries nor has taken any training on making those foods. It
will always be a mystery to me.

Describe something useful you learned from a member of your family

Model Answer:
I have been grown-up in a joint family with more than 12 family members.
They were my parents, siblings, grandma, grandpa, uncle, aunt and cousins. I
had the chance to learn so many things from them and it is, in fact, natural that a
kid would learn things from his/her family members. I have learned swimming
from my uncle, learned the painting from my aunt, learned to play chess from
my grandpa, learned to play cricket and badminton from my brother and so on
and on. I have learned how to handle the stress and adverse time from my
parents and learned how to behave with unknown people from my elder cousin.
Thus the list would be a very long one. But I would like to emphasise the thing
that I learned from my younger aunt and that is the reading habit and the
pleasure of reading. Not that other things I learned from other family members
are of less importance, but the reading for please and true interest of reading
that I learned from my aunt is different and have a great power.
I found my aunt very charming, caring and possesses a great personality. She
had been a voracious reader and because of that, she was more learned and wise
than people of her age. Initially, I thought that how come she spend most of her
time reading? Over the time I became close to her, and she started helping me
with my studies. She started inspiring me to read books other than my academic
books. She read me stories and that help me grow an interest towards books.
Then she started telling me amazing stories of our history and showed me which
books actually have those histories written.
She shared the stories she were reading and thus we started becoming a good
critic of stories and writers. She told me more stories that I have heard from
anyone else. I am grateful to her that she so painstakingly explained different
topics and help me grow a good interest on reading. Because of her
contribution, I have started reading books of different types whenever I got time
which I think is a better investment and activity than spending time idly.
Later I have inspired my nephew to read books. I did the same, I read him
stories which would be interesting to him and gave him sweets, candies, icecream if he could have finished a book and explain the stories. I guess he has
become interested in reading as well.

Describe a stressful day at school/ university/ work.

There are many stressful days I remember from University as well as from work
and out of those, I would like to talk about a stressful day at my work. It was a
project deadline that we were supposed to deliver before the Christmas holiday.
It was due at 15th December 2-3 years back and we were in a good ground to
deliver the task to the client. It was a major client of our company and the
project was a crucial one for the client as well.
We were 8 people involved in this project and on 12th December we revised the
project and found that we need to review only before sending the final version
of the software application. Next two days were days off and all of a sudden I
got a call from my office that something went wrong regarding the project and
the software was not running as expected. I came to office at around 9.00 am on
Saturday and found other members had already come or on their way to my
office.
Initially, we thought that there would be few bugs on our code and that should
not take more than 2-3 hours for us to fix them. But to our surprise, we found
that the code is a mess and nothing is in order. We started revising the code and
found that some of the files had been overridden by newer files which were
completely empty. We felt like the sky had just fallen down on our heads and we
are in the middle of a deserted area. We all looked at the project manager who
was busy talking to the product owner and could guess the hot conversation.
I found some of my files were missing from the project and the backup system
was not working. We spent 2-3 hours discussing the situation and tried to find
out what should we do. The project manager explained we have no other choice
but to work on the missing files all again to make it work.
I was very tired and was getting calls from home to attend a family occasion. I
felt really helpless and could not be sure if I should leave for few hours to attend
the family occasion or not. I explained the project manager that I have to attend
the occasion and then I will get back to the office. He agreed and I ran for home.
From there we went to a relative's house and again I came back to the office in
the afternoon. I found that things were as they were before I left office and
everybody became worried about the project.

We worked till 11.30 pm and then decide to let the client know the real
situation. We emailed the owner and then emailed to the client that, we would
need few more days to finish the project. On that day when I returned home at
around 12:45 am, I felt very stressed and tired. I wished the next day would be
different.
We had to work quite hard for the next few days to make things right. And most
surprisingly we had been able to deliver the project to the client on 20th
December. Though it made some trouble to the client, he was so understanding
and cooperative that he did not complain about it and appreciated us for the hard
work.

Talk about a pet that you or someone you know once had
It is a very long time since I had a pet! However, when we were small my sister
and I did both have pets, Im going to tell you all about them. What kind of
animal, how we looked after them, why we liked them and what makes them to
this day a popular childrens pet.
The animal in question was a guinea pig! My sister and I had one each, mine
was called Treacle, and hers was called Toffee. They were father and son,
Treacle was the older guinea pig and Toffee was a bit younger. Despite their
name, guinea pigs are neither from Guinea and nor are they related to pigs.
They are rodents, with distinctive front teeth, they are quite small, compact,
rounded creatures, fur covered, with short legs and no tail. They are also highly
social, I think they come from South America, and naturally would live in
groups of up to ten individuals so it is really important they are kept with others
when in captivity or they become very stressed and unhappy.
The guinea pigs lived together in a shared hutch in the garden. They werent
difficult to look after, but they did need a lot of daily care. First thing in the
morning we would open the hutch and let the guinea pigs out so they could run
around the garden. They never strayed very far, and kept the lawn beautifully
short, they ate grass in preference to any of the planted flowers. Whilst they
were running round we would clean out the hutch every day. The hutch was in
two parts, an enclosed sleeping area, and a larger living area with a wire mesh
side. We would take everything out in the morning and replace it with new

bedding. First a layer of sawdust and then newspaper covered by lots of soft
fresh hay in the sleeping area so it was warm and cosy. Then in the living area,
we would scatter a deep layer of sawdust before putting out fresh food, a
mixture of vegetables carrots and cabbage, together with a special guinea pig
food we brought from the pet food shop which contained grains like crushed
maize as well as grass pellets. They also had a water bottle hanging up which
we filled up freshly each day. The guinea pigs spent all day in the garden, but
as evening fell they would put themselves to bed in their hutch. Last thing at
night we would check they were safe and well, and lock them in and pull a
cover down over the front of the hutch. This kept them warm and dry even if
the weather was bad and protected them in case foxes might visit at night.
I loved my guinea pig. He was a beautiful warm chestnut colour. He had sort
of rosette shapes in his coat not like smooth haired guinea pigs which I think
are more usual today. I liked to cuddle him, which he tolerated, but honestly,
when I look back I dont know if he really enjoyed it as much as I did. Poor
Treacle. He and his brother Toffee were very talkative. They made a delightful
squeaking and chattering noise when they were excited for example when
they could hear you were on your way over to feed them.
Guinea pigs are really good pets I think. They are gentle and not too difficult to
look after. However, its really important they have the companionship of the
same species, a proper diet, fresh food and water every day and lots of room to
move about. They are incredibly active, running around for about 20 hours each
day. Having a pet is a big responsibility, but I think I learned a lot from looking
after our guinea pigs. You have to care for them every day, and that is an
important lesson for a child to learn. Sadly, in time they grew old and died. We
were very upset, but that was perhaps a useful life lesson too. I gained a lot
from my friendship with Treacle, but even so, I worry about animals being kept
as pets, they are not all looked after as well as they should be. If children are
given pets, I think its really important they know how to care for them properly
and that an adult is around to supervise, then everyone can be satisfied that the
animal is safe and well and that the children and pets are both as happy as each
other!

Describe an occasion or event when you were congratulated.

We all get appreciations for the good things we do for others or for our great
achievements or personal excellence. One such occasion when I was
congratulated was the time when our debate team won the district/ county level
championship.
It was 2001 and I was a student of grade 8. I was an active member of our
school debate team and had participated different solo and team debate
competitions. The yearly inter-school division/ county level championship is
considered to be a prestigious tournament and the final is broadcasted on local
TV channels as well as on the radio. Our school had never been able to win the
championship before 2001, though some of the debate teams participated till the
semi-final round of the championship. This year I was the captain of the debate
team and to everyone's great surprise, we won the final. Most of the people of
our city watched the final on TV and had been very excited, happy and proud
that we won. The school arranged a ceremony to congratulate us for our
achievement and I found more than 5 hundred students, their guardians and
local people were present there. I was so proud, happy and excited about the
occasion and when all those people started congratulating me, I felt like I was
flying above the sky.
Later I received many congratulations and appreciations in my life but the
excitement and joy I felt on that occasion was incomparable. We walked
through the long line towards the stage and people stood up and clapped their
hands and were greeting us. Out teachers, local political leaders, upper-level
government employees and renowned persons of the locality were also present
there. The program lasted for 2/3 hours and we got many gifts and bouquets as
well.

Describe a nation (not your own) that you know well.

I would like to talk about the Japanese nation that has a rich culture and unique
traditions. Japan is an East Asian country and Japanese is their primary and
main language. Their language is written with a combination of three scripts
which were originated mostly from Chinese characters.
The Japanese adhere to no single religion and they have a complex religion
system which is a combination of Shinto and Japanese Buddhism.
They enjoy religious freedom and religion like Christianity, Islam and Hinduism
also exist there. They have around 127 million and the total size of the country
is around 377,944 km.
Their main foods are Japanese rice, noodles, soups, fishes, vegetables, tofu etc.
Japanese culture has evolved greatly compared to the past and their cultures are
influences from North America, Asia and Europe. Elementary and middle
school education from 6 years till 15 are compulsory in Japan. Tokyo is the
capital of Japan and has the higher number of population than any other city.
Japan has the longest overall life expectancy in the world. Japanese are very
advanced in scientific research and the third largest country in the world in
regards to their budget for research and development. They are the 2nd largest
automobiles producer in the world and exports electronics, machine tools, motor
vehicles, steel, processed foods and textiles.
In World War ii, they fought in favour of Germany and 2 cities of Japan were
attached by atom bombs. The have one of the largest military budgets in the
world and they maintain a close military and economic relationship with the
United States.
Japan has the constitutional monarchy where the power of the Emperor is
limited and the Prime Minister of Japan is the head of government and head of

Cabinet who appoints the ministers of the states. They have a reach history and
diversity of culture and distinctive tradition and customs.
Describe an outdoor activity that you did for the first time.
Model Answer:
I usually go out for walking in the evening every day and play some outdoor
games sometimes, but the outdoor activity that I did for the first time was
something different.
It was in the middle of last year when I noticed that some of the people have
gathered in a field and they had bicycles with them. They were dressed like
professional cyclers and were discussing something. That day I was with one of
my friends and we went out with our bicycles as part of our evening exercise.
My friend and I went closer to the group and heard that they are some members
of a bicycling group who do the gathering and cycling as part of their outdoor
activity and exercise.
After few minutes we found that they were planning to round the city in 3 hours
with their bicycle and they would start that in next 30 minutes. The team leader
asked us to join them just when we were planning to leave. They made us
member of the group and it was free. We started cycling with them starting from
this place and went through the major parts of the whole city. Cycling for the
whole 3-4 hours was not an easy task and yet we enjoyed it and were close to
the group whole time. After few hours we came back to the place where we
started and I found that I was totally absorbed and exhausted.
The team leader congratulated us because it was our first day and we did well. I
looked at my friend and he was looked exhausted and tired. The team gave us a
membership card and told that they do it twice in a month. Though we had plans
for joining them again, but we could not do so. I found the whole idea of
cycling very interesting and a good chance to meet new people. I felt well that
we actually did it and the feeling of travelling the whole city riding a bicycle
was thrilling.
I would definitely recommend this activity to anyone capable as it would be a
good exercise as well as a chance to know different people who have some
common interests.

Describe a building/ structure with architectural interest.

Model Answer:
The Leaning Tower of Pisa which is also known as Tower of Pisa is an
interesting structure situated in the Pisa city of Italy. It is the third oldest
structure in Pisa's Cathedral Square and very famous for its unintended tilt to
one side.
The height of the tower is around 183 feet and the width is higher in the lower
part than the top part. This tower has 296 steps and offers a great architectural
value to the world. The tilt of this tower was not planned and occurred
unintentionally. During the construction phase, the tilt was created because of
the inadequate foundation on the soft ground. Later this tilt increased until the
structure was stabilised. Around 200 years were taken to build this greatest
structure. There are some debates about the real architect of this world famous
structure and it has been credited to Guglielmo and Bonanno Pisano as the
architect of this structure. But recent studies imply this credit to Diotisalvi as the
original architect.
This structure has many historic significance and was one of the seven medieval
wonder of the world. The people of Pisa started building this structure to show
the rest of the world about the importance of the Pisa city. The plan included a
cathedral, a baptistery, a bell tower and a cemetery. The construction began at
around 1173 and completed in the middle of 1300. This famous tower is not

known only for the great beauty of its Romanesque architecture but also for its
historical significance. The famous astronomer Galileo Galilei is said to have
dropped a cannon ball and a musket ball bot hat a time from the Tower of Pisa
to prove that weight does not affect the dropping speed of an object.
This structure was listed in the UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987 and had
been very famous as one of the Seven Wonders of the Medieval World.

Describe a competition / contest you have entered

I have attended many competitions in different phases of my life and have won
some prizes from those competitions as well. One such contest that I would like
to talk about was the Cycling competition that I participated in my college.
I was then a student of the college and around 15 years old. One day I noticed
an advertisement in our local newspaper that an inter-college cycling
competition would be held on next week. The entry fee would be $20 and the
prizes would be given to the first three cyclers. I had a passion for cycling and I
thats why I thought to participate it.
On the day of the contest, I went to the starting point and registered my name in
the competition. I took my bicycle and wore my cycling dresses. I noticed there
were around 30 competitors and I was asked to stand at my start point. With the
sound of the whistle, I start cycling. I had almost no intention of winning prized
but I simply did concentrate on cycling. The total distance was around 5 miles
and that required some energy and time. After I finished the racing, I was really
surprised to hear that I won the third prize. I found that some of my classmates
were shouting because I was one of the three prize winners.

I felt really happy and proud that I did well in this competition. Actually, I never
took my cycling habit seriously and after I did well in that competition, I started
participating in other cycling competitions as well.

Describe a piece of modern technology you own

In fact, I own several techno devices & gadgets and out of those, I would like to
talk about the Kindle Fire that I have. This device is produced and sold by
Amazon and I ordered it from their website last year. This device is both a
tabloid and a digital book reader. To me it is a very important technology device
for purchasing online products, listening audio books and reading eBooks. I
have noticed that after I have bought this device, the percentage of my reading
has increased significantly. I use it to read eBooks and with the Wi-Fi
connectivity, it becomes easier to find books online. The charges last for a
couple of weeks and this is a great device for reading books. As I bought it last
year, I own it for more than a year and with time this has become an important
electronic device that I own. This device is my best companion when I make my
journey. The perfect design, nice outlook, good quality hardware and nice user
interface make it an ideal device for book lovers. To me, this is an important
device as this fulfils my appetite for reading. With the internet connection with
this device, I now have access to an immense number of books and reading
materials. Before purchasing it, I used to read 1 book in a month on an average
which has increased to around 3-4 books per month after I bought this device.
I love and enjoy reading and this is a really good device for digital reading. It is
immensely important to read and for me, this Kindle Fire is a companion I
would like to have always with me. In fact, sometimes I consider it to be the
most important and utilitarian electronic devices I ever had.
Describe a situation when you were late.

Model Answer:
The city I live in has a severe traffic jam problem and due to that, we often get
late to reach our destination. One such event when I was late in an important
exam was a frustrating experience for me. It was 2 years ago when I was a
student in the university. I had an exam at 8.30 am which I thought would be at
9.30 am. I did this mistake because I noted the time wrongly in my notebook. I
prepared for the exam well and left home at 8.15 am as my usual journey to my
university takes around 40 minutes. According to the schedule, I should have
reached at least 30 minutes before the exam time.

I already had the wrong idea about the exam timing and I found that it was
raining outside and there were only a few transportations available on the road. I
had to wait at the bus stoppage for more than 30 minutes before I actually got
into a bus. To my surprise, the traffic on the road was very bad. The buses were
moving very slowly because of the unavoidable traffic jam. I was hoping
desperately to reach the university in time. But that was not my day! I reached
at the exam hall at 10.15 am and I was shocked to learn that the exam would
end only in 15 minutes. I was so worried and anxious that I could not think
clearly what to do.
I felt helpless at that time and was asked the teacher what can I do now. He
asked me to come after the exam ends. I followed him as soon as he left the
exam room. I noticed that some of my classmates were also looking at me with
surprise and were probably thinking how careless I was to miss such an
important exam.
After I reach the class exam coordinators room, he took me to our advising
tutor and asked me to give a good reason why I was late for the exam. I told
everything that has happened and the coordinator arranged an exam in his room.
As a penalty, he deducted 20 minutes from the exam time and asked me to
finish the exam and leave the answer sheet to him. I was kind of worried and
felt a bit relieved also. As my preparation was good, I had been able to answer
all the questions in the due time. Thus the situation was handled and I was not in
a big trouble for the late I made unintentionally.

Tell me about a part of your city that is changing

I have been living in (..say your city name...) for the last 15 years and know
almost every street of this city. The city I knew the first time I came here is far
more different than the city has evolved now. The north part of the city has
changed more than any part of the city and still changing.

When I first visited this part of the city, it was mostly an open space that had
lots of fields, trees and a very minimum number of dwellers. There were hardly
any high rising building and mostly farmers and fishers lived there. The fields,
lakes and peoples way of living used to give an impression of an urban life. But
this is no longer applicable for this part of the city. I went to that part of the city
a few days back after a long time and was very surprised to notice the changes
which occurred there and still happening.
The need for industrialisation, to accommodate the increasing population and
for the business expansion, the part has changed dramatically. The open spaces,
fields, and lakes have reduced significantly and one can notice the
overwhelming number of factories, industries and offices there. This place no
longer gives the urban area impression rather it gives a neo-industrial area
impression. The numbers of roads and cars have increased, the farmers and
fishers have moved to the farther north side of the city and 2 new colleges and
universities have been built there.
I feel the necessity of the new industries and offices and their importance for a
country, but the way this part of the city has been transformed is really
shocking. There could have been an alternative place for industries and the city
administrators and authorities could have saved the natural part of the city.
Already the city is overpopulated and because of that we are facing lots of
problems, the changes of this part of the city have caused to accommodate more
people and have destroyed the natural habitat of wild lives. I feel sad to notice
the changes happening in this part of the city.

Talk about a job that helps make the world a better place.
Model Answer:
Teaching in different educational institutions is a job that helps make the world
a better place. There are many different jobs that put great contributions making
the world better but in my opinion, the contribution teachers make to educate
people is very noble and has a really great contribution towards the society and
civilisation.

I mostly learned from my own experience and thought about the great
contributions the teachers have made and are still making. I learned about
teaching professions in my childhood in a conversation I had with my mother. I
asked many questions to my mother about the jobs teachers do and why do they
do it, and my mother answered those questions. Later on, I have read many
articles in newspapers and the internet and have learned the great gift the
teachers are giving to our society.

It is an inevitable fact that education is the main power and backbone of a

nation and teachers are the craftsmen to make a nation educated. From our
childhood, we start learning from our family and surroundings and later on we
go to different educational institutes to learn and acquire knowledge. Teachers
not only teach us the academic lessons, they also teach us the importance of
educations, they inspire us, they motivate us, they teach us morality, honesty
and many other aspects of life. The things we learn from our schools and
teachers shape us what we become. Without their hard work and contribution,
we would have been savage, uneducated and uncivilised.

The teachers are the human engineers who are continuously working on
creating the next leader, scientist, writer, architect, doctor, researcher, pilot,
artist, musician, and composer etc. who would navigate the nation. Without
their unmatched effort and contribution, the world would have been a different
place with lot more problems. Possibly no other profession contributes making
the world a better place as much as the teaching profession does.

Describe a good quality you admire in your friend.

Model Answer:
There are several qualities which I expect to have in my friends and among
them, truthfulness is the quality I admire most. In my opinion, the most
important and fundamental quality that makes the bonding among friends
stronger is the truthfulness. If a friend tells me the truth, no matter what I would
stick to his/ her friendship. The trustworthiness can exist only the truthfulness
persists between two friends.
I sometimes evaluate other with the way I judge myself. For instance, I would
tell the truth to my friends and I know this would make them rely on me and
have faith in me in the long run. Similarly, I want my friends to tell the truth
always. The lies can never make friendship strong and in fact, if a friend finds
that his best friend has lied to him/ her, the friendship would become shaky.
I strongly feel that friends should first tell the truth and then other important
factors would exist among them. I believe a good friend should never lie and

thus the truthfulness among friends strengthens their trust, reliability,

dependency and belief. For all those reasons I like this quality.

Talk about a dish you know how to cook.
Model Answer:
I am not a good cook and I know very little about cooking and related stuff. Yet,
I know how to cook only a few common dishes as I had to cook sometimes
during my university life/ college life. One such dish is the boiled rice and
mutton curry.
To cook this dish we would need the rice, mutton, some spices, onion, vinegar,
mustard, water, oil, salt and some other basic cooking ingredients. I probably
learned it from my mother's cooking. As I have seen my mother cook this very
dish countless times, the idea and cooking of this dish came to me from there.
When I cooked this dish for the first time, I actually recalled what my mother
did and I followed the memories I had regarding my mother cooking this dish.
So in a sense, I learned it from my mother, though she did not teach me how to
cook this dish directly.
To cook this dish, one need to clean and wash the rice and then boil it in the
water for about 30 minutes. At the end the cook has to check the water level and
if needed s/he would need to drop off the extra water. Thus the boiled rice item
would be prepared. To make it tasty, we sometimes use a very small portion of
ghee/ tasty butter to give it a good scent and a delicious taste.

For the mutton curry part, the cook must wash the mutton first and then keep it
in the water for about 20 minutes. After the mutton is washed neatly, it would
have to put in the amalgam of the 3-4 spices, oil and vinegar. After that water
would be added to this and the cook has to wait for 20-30 minutes before it
would be ready to be served along with the rice.
I would say this is an easy dish to cook. It does not require so many ingredients
or so many complex processes for cooking. This is a tasty dish that can be
prepared easily and the taste would be great if everything goes alright.

Model Answer:
The (...say a restaurant name...) restaurant is my favourite place to eat out. I
often go to this restaurant with my friends and family members both for the
delicious foods they serve and for the quiet and healthy environment they offer.
This restaurant serves many various types of foods and that's why one can easily
pick the foods s/he likes. The main dishes they serve are Thai, Indian, Italian,

Mexican, Chinese and local dishes. On special occasions like Christmas and
New Year, they serve other special menus as well.
This restaurant is a 4 storied building and has a nice parking underground and a
garden in front of the ground floor. Just after someone enters into the restaurant,
the garden gives him a positive impression and a touch of nature. The
architecture of the building looks good from outside and the interior decoration
of the building are eye-catching also. The light green colour of the wall, the
opulent wooden furniture, the paintings on the wall, and the nice arrangement of
the interior make it a nice looking place.
The restaurant offers a range of dishes and the prices are reasonable. The middle
class, upper class and lower-middle class people can easily afford to eat here.
People who love Indian, Chinese, Tai and Mexican foods and like to be in a nice
place with a calm environment should come here and try their foods. Since the
environment is quiet and the interior is well-designed, people from all ages
would enjoy being here. The playground at the ground floor is specifically built
for children's amusement and the kids would also enjoy being in this restaurant.

Describe an old object which your family has kept for a long time.
Model Answer:

Some of the books which once owned and used by my grandfather are still kept
with care in our house. My grandfather was a doctor and he kept his medical
books and reference books with him. When he died, I was a 5 years old kid and
can hardly remember things about him. But I heard that he was a great person
and a first-class doctor. Everyone in our locality revered him and respected him
very much. After his death, my father took one of his used tables, an armchair,
and a big portrait of my grand-grandfather and some of my grandfathers books
as the remembrance of his memory. Among those things my grandfathers
medical books survived and are still reserved in our bookshelf.

These books would be more than 70-80 years old and we have those books on
our shelf for the last 20 years. The caretakers sometimes bring out those books
and clean those and finally put them on the shelf again. These books are mainly
the academic books of my grandfather's medical college and some of the
reference books for his practice as a doctor. I once opened some of the books
when I was a school boy and found almost everything very obscure. Basically,
they are medical related terms and that's why seemed jargon to me.

My family has kept these books as the souvenir of my grandfather's memory.

My father was very beloved by my grandfather and I am sure he esteemed my
grandfather very much. These books are the only tangible belongings my father
has which were used by my grandfather and conveys my grandfather's
reminiscences. Though these books do not have their material values but they
are priceless to our family and remind us the precious memory of our
grandfather.

Describe an interesting conversation you had with someone you did not
know.
Model Answer:
Last year when I was on my way to my hometown in a train, I had an interesting
conversation with an unknown person and the conversation lasted for several
hours. I live in the city and my hometown is about 7-8 hours away from the
place I live. I usually go to my hometown by bus but that time I travelled in a
train. I was in a second class compartment of the train and there were almost 10
other people travelling in the same compartment. I found a couple with 2 kids
were sitting just opposite side of me next to me was sitting a person who
seemed around 45 years old. I was sitting beside the window and he asked me to
open it. He then thanked me and asked me about myself. The conversation went
on and I learned that he is a senior employee of a large Government
organisation. I was bit confused that he was travelling in a second class
compartment at cheap rent.

He started a topic about how the kids and young people from the new
generation have little passion for learning and busy doing unproductive staffs. I
started defending the young generation and expresses the difference the new
generation has with their ancestors. The conversation started to turn into a
debate and both of us used our logic and reasoning. The conversation was
interesting and I was actively participating in it mostly because he had a good
and polite way of conversation. He told his reasoning for this belief but when I
showed him my logic, he did not protest just for the conversations sake. Rather
he agreed that he learned many new facts about the new generation and their
way of thinking and lifestyles. He also confessed that the generation gap is
unavoidable and the positive changes should be accepted by them. Besides this
main topic some other topic arrived like the political situation of our country,
the educational system currently we have and what should be done to eliminate
many of your major problems.

The conversation lasted for about 4 hours until he left the train at his station. I
usually do not continue a longer conversation with strangers and often find

people start talking about silly issues with no moral values. But the conversation
I had with this person on the train was interesting and I enjoyed it. I felt like
there is a big gap between the first generation and the new generation and both
generations do not listen and think deeply about the other generation and thats
causing a huge gap between them. I enjoyed to learn many thoughts of our first
generations and was appalled about some of the misconceptions. I was also
relieved to learn that they have a positive attitude towards the changes which
are for good reasons. His way of conversation was also positive and thats why
the overall conversation was enjoyable.

A famous person you would like to meet

Possible Answer:
In my to-meet list, there are so many famous persons whom I dream to meet and
spend some time with. There are several scientists, actors, actress, political
leaders, poets, IT specialists, business founders, sports person, writers and
journalists in this list but Paulo Coelho is the person whom I would like to meet
first.

He is a famous Brazilian lyricist and novelist who has become one of the most
widely read authors in the world. I am a great fan of his writing, enjoyed and
deeply touched by most of his writing and that's why I want to meet him in
person to talk about those stories and to know about the person who actually has
got a brilliant way of storytelling.

I read the book 'Alchemist' by him more than once and thoroughly enjoyed it. It
is an inspiring and thought provoking book and the writer has been able to tell
the story in a fascinating way. This book has been translated into 67 different
languages and has got numerous positive and critically acclaimed reviews. I
know very little about the man behind this amazing stories and that's why I want
to meet him - to know more about him. I place him in a highly esteemed
position. I have enjoyed his many books including 'The Alchemist', 'The

Valkyries', 'Eleven Minutes', 'The Zahir so much that I wanted to meet the
person who wrote those truly amazing stories.

Writers are dream-catchers and possess a magical power of blending the truth
and imagination to create a story. Storytelling and giving them lives is a very
difficult task. Paulo Coelho is a gifted writer who can easily absorb readers'
attention to his powerful stories. His books are page-turners and would always
make the reader to desire read more. I have been so mesmerised by his story
that I would like to meet the real person who tells us the stories. I'd like to know
his thoughts and opinions on many things and would like to spend some time
with one of my favourite writers.
Describe an important email you have received
Model Answer:
I have received many important emails and out of these, I would like to talk
about the email that I got from the HR of a Telecom company that confirmed
my part time job there. When I was a student of 6th semester of the university, I
needed to manage a part-time job. I applied for several jobs but my dream job
was to work as a consultant for a major telecom company in my country. It was
not easy to get the job as so many candidates apply for the job and the company
prefers the full-time employees than the part-time employees.
One day I got an email from Mr. Atherton (...say a name common in your
country...) and I found that it was from the telecom company where I was
interviewed. It was early November 2001 and that time I was around 22 years
old. I opened the email went to the details of the email very quickly. My heart
was pounding and I felt really good when I found that the email confirms my
appointment as a part-time employee for this company. I re-read the email and
took a print out as well. The email was sent to me by the Head of the Human
Resource department of the company.
It was a very important email for me as I was desperately expecting to work for
this company and the email confirmed my joining there. Secondly, this was the
first job confirmation of my life and I needed this job at that time. So this was

very exciting news for me and that's why this was a very important email for
me.

Describe an interesting advertisement you watched on TV.

Model Answer:
We watch so many advertisements on TV and some of them we like and feel
interesting. One such interesting advertisement was the ad of Cello Pen. This
was a creative advertisement and I found it very interesting. I watched this
advertisement a few months ago in a TV channel while I was watching a live
sport telecasting. I still remember it because it was bit unique and the way it was
presented was quite good and touchy.

The advertisement starts with a boy who was in a school and then studied in a
college and finally in a university and in the mean time the ad shows some of
the successes he achieved and was congratulated. Thus he became a successful
journalist and finally won an international prize for his honesty and bravery in
his profession. His parents, mentors, teachers, friends and some others were
highlighted at the end of the advertisement and as a flash back the Cello pen
was shown. The advertisement revealed that the pen has contributed from the
beginning to the end of his success and was never congratulated. Yet this is a
silent partner of the mans success.

This ad was a commercial ad of a company who manufactures and sells the pen.
Thus the ads revealed how important the pens are in our success and how this
pen helps people to become who they are! I guess this was a creative ad and was
made with care as it has been a good ad to watch

Describe something special that you saved money to buy.

Model Answer:
To purchase a digital camera for my younger sister I had to save money for
about 6 months. It was a Canon SLR camera that I knew she had a great desire
to purchase. Since she is still in her college, it was really difficult for her to buy
such a camera.

After I joined in a part time job, I planned to buy it for her. I wanted her to be
happy with the camera and thats the primary reasons I wanted to purchase it. I
knew she has a talent in photography and thats why I wanted her to have a
good camera so that she gets inspired. After I went to some branded camera
shops, I found that the camera would cost me a bit more that I would be able to
effort. As I have joined a part time job at that time, it was not easy for me to
instantly purchase the camera for my sister. Then I planned to save money for
few months and then purchase it. I had to save money for 6-7 months and then I
had been able to actually buy it.

Giving present or surprise gift to someone we care is more exciting and blissful
than purchasing for ourselves. As her elder brother, I wanted to give her the
camera so that she becomes happy. I also wanted her to continue her hobby of
photography which was quite tough without a good quality camera. For these
reasons, it was very important for me to purchase her the camera.

Describe an important historical event in your country

India is one of the largest countries in the Southeast Asia and has been
dominated by the British Empire for around 200 years. The country has gained
independence in 1947 and by the same time got separated from Pakistan.
It was truly difficult to divide the countries based on the religious beliefs and
the issue was a potential one during the independence period. At that time,
people started killing each other based on their religious views which went
beyond control. As a result, the necessity of two sovereign states appeared
before the Congress and the creation of India and Pakistan was done. The Hindu
people started living in India while the Muslims started living in Pakistan. A
great dispute arose inside the continent only over the religious views and the
followers of one religion could not tolerate the followers of the other religion.
So, the higher authorities got worried over the issue and they started to ponder
over the separation. The then British government finally separated the two states
and the separation is also better known as the Independence Day for Pakistan
and India. Now Pakistan observes the day on August 14 while India celebrates
the day on the following day August 15. Due to the separation, some of the
parts have still been disputed and some of the parts of Kashmir have occupied
space of both of the countries which also create conflicts between the countries.
There are no solutions have been found yet against the problem.
Describe a TV or radio presenter.
Sample Answer:
Radio programmes use the presenter more frequently than TV programmes in
our country and one such radio presenter whom I like very much is (say a
name). S/he presents the weather updates in every 2 hours in the ABC radio.

We, as listeners of the radio programmes, know very little personal information
of the radio presenters and the person I am talking about would be around 25
years old and is a full-time radio presenter. S/he is currently presenting the
weather updates, which is a program called Weather Today and I find his
presenting the program very informative and interesting.

Since s/he presents the weather updates, s/he mostly depends on the weather
reports provided to him/her and sometimes s/he makes his/her own thought and
some humour in the presentation.

S/he has an attractive and clear vocal and that makes the information easily
listenable. He has a different style of presenting the weather related data and
mainly because of that the Weather today program has gained its popularity.
S/he describes the overall weather condition based on different locations of the
country and then gives some tips to the listeners.

I find his/ her weather report interesting and informative thats why I like this
radio reporter very much. Sometimes I tune on to the ABC Radio channel to
learn the updates of the weather and s/he is the one to present that.

Describe a thing that has become a fashion or a matter of status nowadays

Model Answer:
Nowadays mobile phones have become a matter of status and a fashion item
that most of the people in my country use. Besides, this device has a great
importance in the way we communicate with others.

People use it for the convenience it offers and they also consider it as a matter
of pride and prestige. With the technological advancement, the utility of this
device has expanded. A cell phone is no longer a device to talk to others and to
send-receive SMS, rather it comes with two high-resolution cameras, music and
video playing capability, FM radio, internet modem, Wi-Fi, games, social
networking applications, video calling etc. facilities. People have become very
fond of this device and the teenagers consider it a must have gadget.

For official and business communications, cell phones are widely used and it is
replacing the land phones rapidly. Day by day the price of the cell phones, talk
time rates, internet using rates are falling down and as a consequence people
with low economic earnings are also extensively using the cell phones for their
communications.

I stay far away from my hometown where my family members live. To

communicate them I find my cell phone very handy and the lowest expensive
among the ways I have to communicate them. I also use it to contact my friends,
classmates and teachers. Besides, I listen to music and use the internet using my
cell phone. I update my blog; maintain social networking via my cell phone. I
have become heavily dependent on the cell phone I own and to some extent, it is
a fashion item to me as I could have easily purchased a low-budget phone
instead of the expensive smartphone I have. For my communication,
entertainment and educational reasons I keep it with me almost 24 hours a day
and thus, this cell phone has become an influential device that I like to use.

Talk about something that you purchased and had not used much
Model Answer:
I love the technological devices and gadgets and sometimes purchase them from
the attraction rather than the need. One such device I bought that I have rarely
used was the Sony gaming console. I purchased it in 2011 with a good amount
of money but have not played games in it more than 10 times!

I bought it from a big Sony showroom from a nearby market. The time I bought
it, I had the passion of purchasing it and I did not think about the amount it
would cost and how many times I would actually use it. It was like fulfilling a
wish rather than purchasing a utilitarian device for daily use.

When I bought it, I was fascinated to buy it. In fact, I had a long desire to buy it
and after I bought it, I got busy with my study and the new job. I noticed that
over time, my fascination about playing games in a gaming device or in a
computer has decreased. Moreover, my job, my university and my other
interests require the majority time and hence I got very little time for playing the

game. With time this device has become a backdated gaming console and I have
lost interest in it. And because of that, I did not use it that much.

Something you were disappointed about

Model Answer:
Everyone expects something good when they buy any electronic goods but I
was highly disappointed with a mobile phone bought from a globally renowned
manufacturer. I could not use the cell phone for around two months. It got
seriously damaged without any reason.
In March of the year 2016, I had bought an iPhone 5 manufactured by apple.
This is a globally renowned brand and sells its products around the world. This
is also considered as the most pricey product on the planet. Everything is okay.
The hardware and software combinations are fine and undoubtedly the products
provide the best possible services. Considering all the other issues, I bought the
phone set from a local iPhone selling store in Singapore. The selling authority
asked me to reach them in case of any trouble with the phone. But there were no
chances of such events to contact them again over any defects or problems with
the phone. The phone worked well for a couple of weeks and from the second
month, a few symptoms appeared. The phone screen got blurred and some

noises on the screen appeared as well.

The screen problem appeared exactly from the second month after buying the
phone. As I was instructed, I took the phone to the retailer who sold it to me
with necessary documents. They received the phone cordially and asked me to
meet them a couple of days later. Accordingly, I met them and they handed the
phone over to me and assured that the problems were gone. To my surprise, the
problem appeared again and now it was happening twice than before. The phone
set frequently restarted and the screen was looking awful. It appeared that the
screen became the place colour. A wide range of colours were playing on the
screen while the display was not working. I tried to install the OS several types
but it did not accept the new install. So, I had to go back again to the selling
store and this time they asked me to come after a week. They also ensured me to
look into the matter deeply. In between, I made a phone call at the store and
came to know that the phone set is defective and the display will not be okay
any more.
Though the selling store replaced the phone to me, I was disappointed highly
with the poor quality of the product. It may happen that the specific phone set
that I bought was of below standard but not all the products are the same. By the
same time, the selling authority has agreed to replace the handset shortly.
Despite all the positive issues, I did not get any comfort of my mind. This was
the very first apple product for me and I bought it after saving from my pocket
money given by my dad. So, it was a happy moment for me when I bought the
phone and my happiness turned upside down when the phone started trouble.
The technicians at the apple approved selling store in Singapore could not figure
out the problems of the phone initially and later they come to the decision that
the display of the phone was defective. So, I was disappointed about the issue
that all my efforts resulted in having a defective handset.
I was emotionally imbalanced after the event. I have been using the replaced
cell phone but I the days are fearsome. I am afraid of experiencing the situations
again and if such happens, the selling authority would not allow me to replace
the phone again. A blended form of emotions attacked me when I encountered
the problem with the phone set. At first, I was amazed at the color change of the
display and then became worried when the colors were frequently changing. I
got afraid when the set started restarting frequently in the second time. I heard

many rumors about phone bursting and the issue made me concerned lest my
phone set does not get burst as if it bursts, I would not be able to replace the set.
Fortunately, nothing worst like that happened and still I am using another
similar phone which is serving me well. But when I remember about the earlier
iPhone 5, I feel sad.

Describe a feature of your personal character that you find important.

Model Answer:
Human beings are subject to imperfection. They will not be perfect despite
numerous attempts. This is natural. But they might be able to own some special
qualities which make them great. I am humbly proud of my honesty. This is the
only feature that I find important in me.
Honesty is a great virtue and everyone is almost known with the saying that
honest is the best policy. Yes, undoubtedly the saying is true for all. If people
could remain honest during the lifetime, they will be rewarded in the long run.
To be frank, I have been enjoying a pleasure that cannot be expressed in
language. The honesty inside me leads me to do everything with due sincerity
and perfectly. For being honest, I am adored by everyone and especially by my
colleagues. Since my early childhood, I have never got involved in any
dishonest act and thus everyone respects me.
Honesty is globally respected. In each of the sectors of life, people need
honesty. The number of dishonest people is on the rise and thus it has become a
rare virtue in the present days. So, when I found that everything is becoming
corrupted, I should walk in the opposite track. I got the learning from my
parents, especially my dad, a former police official here in Singapore. He
advised me to be honest in every sphere of my life and I would be successful.
How right he was! By dint of my honesty, I have overcome all of the troubles of
my life so far. I have a good job at a local real estate call centre with some
standard benefits. My parents, neighbours, colleagues and friends love me. But

if I did not own the virtue, I think I would be treated like the other people.
Besides, my honesty makes me feel better. I get encouraged from my inner self
to perform the works more efficiently. Besides, I am following the advice from
my parents. For all these reasons, I think it is important for me.
After adopting the policy to remain honest in the rest of my life, I have gained
much. Firstly, I gained the job currently I am performing in, I gained the love of
my surrounding and overall the blessing from my parents. I have experienced
that the people with dishonesty are shining in their life and life is a luxury for
them. But my shabby life is enough for me and I am satisfied with what I earn
in honest ways. My neighbour (I do not want to expose his name) once was
poor and now he has built a huge residential complex on his land next to ours.
But he is not respected in the society as everyone knows that he gained wealth
by dishonest means. Even he does not receive the importance as I get as a junior
from the others. Honesty has brought a sense of self-dignity to me. I feel glad
when people greet me and adore my virtue. I take humble pride in those
greetings. This has changed my thoughts about life and living.
Honesty is a divine gift and it is not placed upon anyone. So, I think I am
divinely blessed with the virtue. This is a unique feature of mine that has made
me popular among everyone. I have got my job only for my honesty. When they
asked me about my academic background, I did not hide anything to them
though they called for someone with a shiny academic career. Moreover, I am
able to impress people with my speeches as I am a trustworthy person to all in
my locality. Almost everyone knows me for my feature of not lying. Besides,
when I sit at the store with my father - the retired government official, people
make crowds in our grocery store to collect their daily necessaries as we always
provide the exact measures. No dishonest means are followed here. Honesty has
made everything for me. I have a happy family, better career and hopefully a
bright future. Everything has been possible for my honesty. Thereby, honesty is
truly important to me.

Describe a rule you did not like in school

Model Answer:

The days of school were best in my life but I could not comply with one of the
rules and that is attending at the assembly in the early hours of the day.
Serangoon Garden Secondary School is highly strict over the issue.

Now I have crossed the boundary of school and studying Diploma in Business
at a local college here in Singapore but the days before attending here were
awesome to many extents. But there were some unpleasant issues as well. Due
to my lifestyle, it was impossible to wake early hours in the morning. My
school, the SGS, started its activities from 7.20am. I had to reach my school by
7.10 am and then placing my bag in the classroom, I along with the other
students of my class went to attend the flag raising ceremony and assembly. The
ceremony began at 7.20am and most of the times I could not stand well for
sleep in me. It was too difficult for me to wake up at 6.45am and get ready for
the school and then again stand in the playground for the formalities that ended
by 7.35am.

The reactions were mixed. Some of the students thought that attending the
assembly was a good practice while most of the students were like me. In fact,
attending the assembly would have been better if the assembly and the other
events started in a bit late. It becomes difficult for most of the students to get up
so early in the morning and the discipline was too strict. All of the students had
to follow the rules and regulations strictly and if there were any disobedience
about following the rules and regulations, strict measures were adopted as
punishment for the students. Often, I have seen that many of the students are
avoiding the assemblies as they are unable to stand at the playground under the
sun. Sometimes they used to hide themselves in the toilets and on the other
corners of the school from where they were able to skip the ceremony.

Yes, I have often violated the rule. I did that after I got promoted to the highest
grade of the school. In fact, we had a group of students who used to violate the
rule. In most of the cases, we used to hide ourselves in the toilets of the schools.

Besides, we also had some special places to keep ourselves hidden till the
assembly ceremony was over. When the ceremony got ended, all of the students
used to reach their respective classrooms following a queue and we, the naughty
students, used to penetrate with them in the classrooms so that nobody could
doubt us. Sometimes, we used to make late and it was a bit flexible for the
students of the last grade to be a little late for the class. Besides, when we did
not have the intention to attend classes, sometimes we hid ourselves at the small
room located on the rooftop. When the class was finished, we got down from
there and took our seats at the last benches.

From my early childhood, I was naughty and still I am today. Thereby, my

parents got me admitted at the school as its discipline is strict. The students are
not allowed to go out of the rules and thus they become disciplined. But I was a
bit different from the other students and remained busy in violating the rules.
Though sometimes I tried to follow the rules, it was a bit difficult me to comply
with all the rules. It was irritating for me to stand in a queue for the morning
assembly and the most important reason was the small playground with no
shade. All the students had to stand under the bare sun in the morning and some
of them turned fade. I used to sweat a lot and when I stood under the sun, my
school uniform got wet with my sweats. Besides, it was impossible for me to
tolerate the same lectures every day at the assembly. The teachers used to make
us take the pledge to do the good things and avoid the bad things. Definitely,
their intentions were good but it was intolerable for me to pledge all the
memorised verses in every morning. So, for all these reasons, I did not like the
rule.

Describe an important social change in your country

Model Answer:
Pakistan is the country with numerous hopes, potentials and aspirations. But in
some cases, the state is lagging behind and improvement on the sectors has
already started. The rate of schooling has increased comparing to the previous
days.

Earlier, parents did not send their kids to school for different reasons and
particularly the female education was one the less important issues. However, in
the current days, the scenario has changed greatly, most of the girls are sent to
school and they are completing their secondary and in some cases pursuing to
the highest degree of the country. But once could not have thought of sending
his/ her girl to an educational institution. It was only allowed that the girls will
be educated inside of their home with the religious studies and the higher
education was a banned for them.

The change has taken after a large number of troubles and revolutionary
attempts. Education for women at first was discouraged by the governmental
initiatives and then when the government started realising the importance of
empowerment of the women to survive and sustain the modern days, it started
inspiring the female education. Since education broadens the outlook, changes
the attitudes and creates a deep sense of right and wrong, it is a must for the
people to go ahead and make the country a developed one. The government has
realised the issue lately as different awareness activities have been undertaken
by different non-government organisations. As a result, the women of all classes
have the access to education at any level; they are completing their academic
studies and getting involved in different professions.

It took about decades to improve the situation. Women were not allowed to
participate in most of the out of home activities and the males were the key
wage earner. They also did not allow their women to go outside. But with the
change of time, they started realising the effects of keeping their wives at home.
When the world is marching ahead with different development endeavours,
Pakistan started to lag behind and fell in different political and socio-economic
difficulties. In fact, it is impossible to go ahead by leaving the half of the
population is darkness. Gradually, education for women was made easy and
their spontaneous participation in education began.

Currently, Pakistan is marching ahead with a great speed as the women of the
country are being educated. They are empowered and own the authority to
express their opinion in familial and other related issues. Due to their
participation is development activities, the productions are on the increase and
as a result the national economy is upping. The social and cultural environments
are getting changed. Women are out for work and participating in almost all
sectors for their livelihood. Consequently, the countrymen have started reaping
the benefits.

Your preparation for this Cue card will help you to answer the following Cue
card topics as well:
Describe a law you would like to implement in your country.
Describe a change you have noticed in your country.
Talk about a law you like.
Describe a social change you think is needed.
Something you borrowed from your friends or family.
Model Answer:
Due to my wicked nature, I was admitted to a boarding school where I lived
with my friends of similar nature. I had to borrow a tie from one of my friends
to attend a presentation in the class.

It was a blessing for me that the friend did not have the course that I took in the
high school grade. So, I was able to borrow a tie for the presentation of my
group in the class. The teacher ordered us all to be formal in attires during the
presentation day and accordingly all of us planned to put on a black suit with a
white tie. But unfortunately my tie was red in colour and I started seeking one.
The teacher also said that if he sees someone in informal attires, he would not
allow the student to appear in the presentation. It means he is to stay in the same
grade for another year.

The presentation was set on 10am and my classroom was just beside the
dormitory - it took a 3-minute walk to reach the classroom. So, I used to get up
late and get prepared for the classes in the regular days and it turned into a habit
for me. So, the events were repeating even on the presentation day. When it was
9.45am, I noticed that I need a tie. So, I asked the other roommates and all of
them said that they are going with me for the presentation, and accordingly they
cannot offer me their tie. I was upset and the race against time began. Then I
moved to the next room of mine and found that Robin, one of my batch mates is
sleeping on his bed as he does not have any presentation on that day.

Although there were dress codes in my school, but the presentation day attire
was our creation. Some of the intelligent (!) students, I was one of them, set the
dress code as black and white. The colour combination was great but I forgot to
mention them that I do not have any white tie. The one I have is red in colour
and I do not use it frequently except any special occasion. When I found that the
colour is red, it was like a bolt from the blue on me. I started seeing a white tie
and had to borrow it from Robin to appear in the presentation. The presentation
was important to me as it was the year ending presentation over a special
assignment that we did for last quarter.

If I failed to appear before the teacher and my classmates with the assignment,
my promotion to the next grade would have been halted by the school authority.
In line with the written examinations, we are to present some specific topics
before the teachers and fellow classmates which are counted like an exam. So,
absence in the presentation refers absent in the exam. My promotion will be
stopped, and I have to study in the same grade again. I had everything except a
white tie. Usually, I do not borrow anything from anyone; I had to do so on that
day due to lack of time and my negligence. So, it was highly important for me
to borrow the tie from Robin and later I thanked him generously.

Describe an unusual building you have visited.

Model Answer:

People love unusual or weird things and accordingly try to make their own
things bizarre and thus special. When buildings are made unusually, they
actually gain fame as the Basket Building in Ohio has turned so.

The Basket Building is, in fact, headquartering for a corporation named

Longaberger Company. It is located in Newark of Ohio in the United States.
The idea to make such a strange and attractive building came from the founder
of the company and replicates a medium size basket produced by the
corporation. The building is seven-storied and made with steel structure. It took
around seven years to complete the construction of the building and it was
opened for activities from 1997. The building has a unique interior and exterior
decoration that has made it strange and attractive to the media and global people
as well.

The building is used as the headquarter of Longaberger Company and the plan
was that the other office buildings of the company will be made on the basket
design, but after the death of Dave Longaberger, the company owner, his
daughter did not allow to make all the buildings by the same design. Due to the
steel structure and decoration, the building resembles the basket made by the
company and has been awarded too for its splendid design and unusual
decoration.

The Basket Building is the exact replica of a medium market size basket
produced by the Longaberger Company. The company manufactures baskets
and other lifestyle products in the USA. From a notable distance, people
become perplexed at the first sight that a large basket is standing but they realise
their mistake when they approach near the building. Due to its strange look, the
building has become the issue of media attention and media-men of different
countries have paid their visit at the building. Inside of the building is also
decorated in an efficient manner to grab attention by the first sight of the
visitors. The grand staircase is the most notable thing after the entrance inside
and many of the visitors start playing the grand piano kept aside of the staircase.

The building is unusual in a positive sense. It is truly beautiful. The interior and
exterior decoration is a wonder of modern days. The glass ceiling inside the
building allows the visitors to look at the basket handles and the family
paintings on the wall inside are amazing too. The floors are made with marble
and the wood works were done from cherry wood farmed in private gardens of
the founder family. The seven storied building is also considered as the worlds
largest basket in the world. The building looks beautiful most at night for the
lightings.

Describe a place you went to which was full of colours

Model Answer:
I live near the Skagit Valley and the place remains colourful almost round the
year, and the colours change with the seasonal changes. But the colours are
more flamboyant and attractive during the Tulip Festival in fall.

The Skagit Valley is a highly charming attraction and located in a prominent

place between Seattle and Washington in the USA. Skagit River is the life of the
valley and has crossed the locality in a snake-like shape. It is in the north-west
corner of Washington, a few kilometres away from my residence. The valley
takes different colours in different seasons. To observe the valley perfectly, you
are to visit during the winter. Hiking or riding a ferry is the best way to enjoy
the colourful valley. Migrant birds of different types and colours visit the valley
during the season. During the spring season, the tulips bloom across a long-filed
which is another colourful attraction for the tourists. April is the best month to
observe the tulips in their brightest colour and I hope to visit the valley in the
next fall to observe the tulips only.

Skagit Valley is an eye-catching place and many of the global tourists visit the
place only to enjoy its natural beauty. I also went there to enjoy the natural
scenes and beauties of the valley. The valley is a unique one and filled with

different colours. The environment is highly colourful that attracts the mind and
the activities undertaken at the valley are incredible and remarkable as well.
Many of my friends have paid their visits at the valley but I could not manage
time with them to be there. So, I planned my visit the Skagit Valley with my
family members and the trip also aimed to make the other junior members of the
family aware of this natural beauty spot in the state.

There are many things to do for the tourists and we made lots of fun. We
participated in both the indoor and outdoor activities and particularly the kids
were the key participants in all the events. We started hiking in the valley. Then
we watched the wildlife of the valley and the kids were truly contented with the
animals and birds under the open sky. Moreover, some of my family members
rode on beach bikes and the other rode on canoe. I preferred fishing most but
could not catch a single fish within the fishing time. One of the kids wanted to
have skiing but I did not allow him to do that as he is too young to go with the
ski board. We also visited the museum during our return from the valley and
truly it was an awesome experience for us all.

The place was too colourful. The environment was charming and the natural
colours were eye soothing. The birds were of different colour, the tulips were
attractive for their extraordinary shades and the people visiting the valley also
worn dresses of different attractive and unusual colours. Everything formed a
sense of exceptional and sensual colour around. The trees in the National Park
were breathtaking green, the deep blue water on the beach, the flowers, birds
and small animals, lighting of different colors at the shopping centers, ripe and
green crops at the fields everything is merged with the nature and thus the
nature has created a colorful environment at the valley.

Describe something kind that someone did for you

Model Answer:

Since both of my parents are engaged in two different professions, I have to be

alone at home for most of the time and during a sudden illness in the absence of
my parents, one of my neighbours helped me greatly.

It was Aunt Sally who came into my help during a sudden physical illness. She
is our neighbour and lives just opposite of our apartment. She is the wife of my
fathers business partner and very kind in nature. Although she has two kids, she
loves me like her own kid too and never makes any hesitation to share her love
and affection to me. I also paid proper respect to her for her kindness to me. In
the absence of my parents, she took care of me and even I stay at her apartment
when my father goes abroad with her husband for business purposes and my
mother goes to meet her parent.

I came back from my school early as I was feeling uncomfortable. Father

dropped me at the school and said that he would take me back when the school
is finished. But suddenly I started feeling uncomfortable. I was affected with a
high fever and it was accompanied with a frequent cough. My muscles were
filled with pain and I was feeling like that someone is beating me. Then I asked
my class teacher for an emergency leave. The teacher allowed me to leave the
school and also sent a school staff with me for my safety. The school staff
carried me all the way to my home and handed me over to Aunt Sally as I
informed that she will take my care until my parents return.

When I returned home, Aunt Sally took my responsibilities on her shoulder and
took immediate actions to make me feel comfortable. She informed the issue to
my parents over the telephone and asked them to return as soon as possible. She
took me to her apartment, wiped my body with wet clothes and gave some
painkillers and other necessary medications after consultation with a doctor.
Then I slept on a bed in that apartment and when I woke up I saw my parents
are sitting beside me. I would have fallen in a real trouble if Aunt Sally was not
at home on that day.

I am truly grateful to her for her kindness to me. She has done a lot of things for
me. She never missed one of my birthdays and even she does not forget to wish
me on my birthday. I am highly lucky that I have a neighbour like her. She is
like a motherly figure to me and I find a sense of happiness when I meet or talk
with her. When I remember that I was trembling in fever and my muscles were
filled with unbearable pain, she was the only woman who came for my
assistance. She cared for me like her own son and undertook all the necessary
steps for my cure until the arrival of my parents. It is a blessing for me I have
such a great neighbour.

Describe a time when you got lost.

Model Answer:
When I was a student of 9th grade, I went to a summer camp in Palo Duro
Canyon State Park in Texas and got lost from my team.

It was in the beginning of a summer when the school authority decided to take
us to a summer camp in a remote place of Texas. All of us were thrilled to hear
that we are going to learn some extraordinary skills to survive in a desert land.
When we were taken at Palo Duro Canyon State Park, we found the place with a
different form of natural beauty and the camping sites were perfect for us.
Following the teachers instruction, we pitched our camps and some of us
started collecting woods for fueling the foods preparation for the first night
under the open sky. I also went to collect woods (although there were fewer
trees), I was lost.

I was accompanied with three of my friends to collect woods to be used as fuel

for preparing the foods at night. So, four of started to collect woods in four
different directions. As the entire location was almost like a desert land, there
were no large trees that could be used as fuel. So, I walked for about 20 minutes
in search of such woods and finally decided that I have to uproot the grass-type
smaller trees for fuel. I collected many of them and put those into my collection

bag. But suddenly I realised that I am alone and I could not see any of my
teammates who came with me to collect woods.

I felt scared. I have read many stories earlier over the incidents in deserts. I
heard that there were wild animals that kill the lone rangers on the deserts or try
to attack them on their way. Moreover, I was afraid that what will happen if I
cannot get back at the campsite. I also thought if the teachers and team members
will look for me or not. I felt a deep sadness inside. I remembered my family
members and friends. I started thinking if I die now, they will be unable to find
my body or the body may be eaten by the wild animals. Unfortunately, I left my
compass inside the bag in the campsite and if that was with me, I could have
started the return journey using the directions. Actually, I was truly scared when
I was lost.

After sometimes, I started planning how to get back. I, in fact, did not have any
bend on my way rather I followed a straight path and reached the place
currently I am standing on. I had some small plants on the bag as fuel. So, I
thought that if I start my return journey just in the opposite direction, it will be a
smart idea. Thus, I started walking back on the reverse way I came here. After
walking for a few minutes, I heard some noises; in fact, it was my mates and the
other students and teachers of the camp. They were looking for me and were
shouting by my name. I felt a sense of relief that now I am not alone in the
desert.

Describe someone you know who is a good teacher.

You should say:
who this person is
how you know him/her
what kinds of subjects they teach
and explain why this person is good at teaching.

[You will have to talk about the topic for one to two minutes. You have one
minute to think about what you're going to say. You can make some notes to
help you if you wish.]

Model Answer:
A teacher is a person who is a guide and fatherly figure for all the students. Mr.
Emanuel Robertt is an English literature teacher at the Nelson Mandela
Metropolitan University where I am studying now.

Mr. Emanuel Robertt has long been teaching English literature courses at
Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University located in Port-Elizabeth. He is
famous in the university for his special skills in making the lessons clearer to
the students. Moreover, his teaching style is also attractive and he can keep the
class under his complete control when delivering the lectures. Most of his
lectures are without any books and he explains the stories and dramas by his
own which is an effective teaching method and I have never seen it before.

I met him first when I got admitted in the undergraduate course and I had
English in my course list. On the day of the class, a moderate-figured man
entered into the class and I thought he might by any guardian who is visiting the
classes (it happened as I did not meet him before). When he started asking our
name after introducing himself, I realised that he is my English teacher. After
the introduction session, he discussed the course outline and how he will teach
us. He never used books for his lectures and might have prepared before
entering the class. Still, I have a very good connection with him and he is a
referee in my curriculum vitae as my academic reference.

Mr. Robertt was primarily responsible for teaching the history of English
literature. By the same time, he also taught different literary pieces of the
English literature. I learnt to read Shakespeare from him. Despite being a rough
student, Mr. Robertt inspired me to taste the delicious flavour of English
literature. I have also read the poems of different ages and learnt numerous

amazing things. I got familiar with the poets thoughts and that revealed the
ages before me. Moreover, when he taught the history and we, the students of
his class, asked him different questions, he took those on a notepad and replied
one after another when the lecture was ended.

Mr. Robertt is a natural teacher. He knows very well how to make the students
attentive in class and the most important fact is his teaching method. That is
different from the other teachers. He never pushed us to study his subjects rather
we were the students who used to read more and more so that we could ask him
questions to get the texts meaning clear. He has a loud and pleasant voice and
as an individual, he is polite and considerate. He never forced the students to
perform something special which is beyond their capacity. So, he is adored by
all of the students and I am also proud to be his student.

Model Answer 1:
Humans cannot live alone. A society or community is a must to live in peace
and harmony. It is also essential to avoid different disasters or distresses
together. But to move on with the society, one cannot have the right person
always. There are some people who want to make troubles even in the delicate
situations of the other people but to be courteous, we are to remain calm and
show respect to them even when it is proved that they are responsible making
the mess.

In my family, I have a relative who is a kind of ill-mannered man and elder in

age. So, I cannot tell him about his sick nature and consequently I have to be
nice with him always. He is skilled in making troubles among the other family
members and most of the time he brings some false allegations against us (I was
victimised by the man.) He is an uncle of mine and the relationship between

him and my family is intimate. He is the brother of my mother and lives

adjacent to our apartment block in the town with his own family.

There are some villainous characters found in movies and when they exist in
real life, the life turns into a hell. I cannot like or prefer the uncle for his weird
behaviour. He always tries to create confusions among his surrounding people
and he finds an invisible delight in doing so. Now, all of the family members of
my family have become aware of his attitude and behaves. But in the beginning,
when he brought charges against someone, all the other people used to believe
and accordingly took measures against the individual. Sometimes the alleged
person was punished rigidly too. Rebuking was the lowest of the punishments.

Once he brought a false allegation against me and he reported the issue to my

parents. But fortunately, I became able to prove that the allegation was false.
The uncle alleged that I had broken a vase at his apartment on a specific event
when he invited some of the guests including our family members. But I denied
the allegations and proved that I stayed for a few moments at his apartment and
I did not enter the room where the flower vase was kept. I had to take a leave
from the party due to my academic engagement.

When I turned successful in proving the issue, he changed his tone and said that
it was his mistake to blame me. He also apologised for his mistake. It is his
habit to seek apology when he is proved wrong and then imposed the blame to
someone else. As a result, the innocent relatives of the family turned tired of on
him.

Despite all the negative doings, I still have to be nice to him because he is the
older than me. My parents have taught me to be nice in behave with everyone
regardless of age, gender or class. I never misbehaved with him after the
allegation and pay proper respect. The other teen members of our family also
pay respect to the man but he believes that we are afraid of him. He takes our
modesty as our weakness and consequently plots different mess to involve us
imaginarily.

And explain why you particularly like this photograph.

Model Answer:
Recently I have got my iPhone 6 as a gift from my father and have taken a
picture of my family. Almost all the members living with us were present at the
photo.

Capturing photograph is the way to cage the time and remember the past when
you have leisure. Photos usually take people to a different world or thoughts and
they are in a deep sense enjoyment till they continue watching the photos.
Therefore, I took the photo to make the event an ever remembering one marking
the moment of celebrating to have the very first iPhone in our family. It was the
very first picture clicked from my phone as well. The picture contained my
parents, my siblings a younger brother and a sister, my granny, one of our
neighbours who came suddenly, our maid and my pet cat. All of them were
sitting on couches and smiled when I clicked the photo.

It was the evening of autumn and the day before my birth date. My father
rushed to my room. He came from his office and I thought something serious
might have happened as his facial expressions looked so. As his older daughter,
I knew each of his movements and expressions but that was unknown to me. He

neither was happy nor was angry but his eyes and face looked exciting. I could
not realise the fact until he revealed and unboxed the iPhone 6. It was a great
surprise for me and I did not expect such a wonderful gift from him although he
once said that he would buy me a new cellular phone set. After receiving the
iPhone, I took the picture but unfortunately I was missing from the image being
the photographer.

Before handing the iPhone over to me, my father asked all the members of the
family to be present at the living room. Accordingly, everyone was there and we
both came to the downstairs. I showed the phone to everyone. All of them were
glad seeing me happy. So, I decided to do something special with the phone and
asked them all to be one place so that I could get a picture of them. Being highly
joyous about the phone, I clicked the picture and all of them were happy.

I like the picture and it is one of my favourite pictures because of so many

reasons. Firstly, the picture is the very first picture taken from the iPhone. I have
captured a lot of pictures with the iPhone but still I remember the day when I
clicked the picture of my family. I have taken a good number of selfies with the
front camera but the rear camera is better and I have printed the picture which is
flawless. Moreover, all of my favourite people were present in the picture and
even my pet also stares at the picture hanging in my bedroom. Besides, the pose

Model Answer 1:
When I was a teen of 17 years old, I used to make friends more due to my
extrovert nature. But unfortunately, I also had the most misunderstanding with
them. However, I have not lost any of my friends for the disagreements.
Once I bought few novels to read in my leisure hours during the summer
vacation of the college. During the vacation, one evening two of my college
friends reached my home. After having some chats, one of them started looking
at my library that I have built since my childhood (I love reading books from
my early age and has a huge collection of different types of books). He picked
one of the books that I just have started reading since the morning that day.
It was Thomas, my bosom friend at the college. I helped him greatly in
mathematics and physics on the exam before the college closure on the summer.
The disagreement began with him when he wanted to take the novel at his home
for reading. The novel named - An American Tragedy by Theodore Dreiser was
his first choice.
I tried to make him realise that I had started reading the novel before they arrive

at my home and has already read a substantial portion of the book. But he was
determined to take the book. Thus the disagreement continued. Samuel, the
other friend of us sat motionlessly and observed us exchanging words with each
other.
The argument continued for about 15 minutes, and I tried him to persuade in
taking some other books but he was determined. He did not change his mind
and said that once he started reading the novel but could not finish the book for
some reasons. Now he does not want to miss the chance to complete the book.
I had completed reading the one fourth of the book and as a quick reader, I
proposed him to take the book on the very next day. But he was unchanged in
his attitude. He blackmailed me emotionally saying that if I do not allow him to
take the book, then he should not consider me as his friend.
Finally, I had to give up on his stubbornness and let him take the book on one
condition that he should return the book just after he finishes reading and also
will not lend someone else (he had lost most of his books by lending others for
his extraordinary generosity) as he did earlier with my books.
Describe a relative/ friend/ family member who you think is similar to you.
You should say:

who is he/ she

what he /she does

what others think about him / her

and explain how he/ she is similar to you.

Model Answer:
I live in a joint family with my parents and relatives in Mumbai. I have a
paternal cousin living with us and he is similar to me.
My parents are on the view that a joint family is the way of living together
within a family and thus they are not giving up the living. Therefore, I am living
with many of my relatives and prefer to be with my cousins of my age. Kailas is
one of my paternal cousins and is almost similar to me in nature and activities.
It appears that we are siblings as we have many similarities. Naturally, both of

us are calm and dislike the wicked kids of the family. Often the family members
term us as twins since we always pass moments together and also live in the
same room with another cousin of us.
Kailas is a student like me and we are in the same college having our 11th
grade. He is a brilliant student with a ready wit. His sense of humour is deep
and he can also make people laugh too within a few seconds with his
extraordinary speaking skills. I am also a good speaker but he is more skilled
than me. He likes to read books and we have bought many books together to
make a library in the house. Besides, he is also a great chess player and
practices his skills with me and please be noted that I am also a good chess
player and been playing for a long time.
The family members are on the view that Kailas is a great student with his
extraordinary merits and praise for his sincerity with the studies. He loves to
pass times with me by performing extracurricular activities which is the most
important issue for him. The other boys usually pass their times out of homes
and get engaged into different mischievous activities and that is a great concern
for the adults, but there are no such issues with Kailas or me. He always gets a
better score comparing to me and I am also proud for that. He passes most of his
time by reading and the most important fact is his humbleness in talking with
everyone irrespective of cast creed or colour.
Kailas is almost similar to me in different aspects. I like to pass times by
reading different novels and my textbooks, and it is all the same for him too. I
am a bit introvert and do not talk with people unless they start first, Kailas is my
replica here. Although the attitudes and behaves I do with everyone is very
gentle, Kailas is more humble than me in this case. When we go to attend any
invitation, I do not make any hurry and Kailas follows me here. Wickedness is
out of my nature and he is also like me in this sense. Our parents never think for
us as the other parents do for their kids as they always perform mischievous acts
and the local people most of the time comes with different allegations against
them etc. In many aspects, I and Kailas are similar.

3.
Talk about a friend you like very much.

Describe a common interest you and one of your friends have.

5.
6.

Describe a friend who has a good understanding with you.

Talk about a person in your family you would like to work with.

Describe your favourite way to relax.

You should say:

what is it

how effective it is for you

when and how you relax.

and explain why you like this way of relaxation.

minute to think about what you're going to say. You can make some notes to

Model Answer:
In this mechanised world, we are stressed out more or less and at a point, we
need to relax. I usually meditate when I feel too much stress on the regular days.
When the stress becomes intolerable for me during my work or in any other
situations, I usually meditate to remove the stress from my body and mind. It is
really helpful for me to rid of the stress within a few minutes. It is also
beneficial for the development of mental faculty as I have enough chances to
think over different matters in a calm and quiet environment and the solutions I
get are amazing. Meditation is not a long term process and thus I perform it
different times of the day. Usually, I perform it after waking up and at times I do
it in the short breaks at the office.
Meditation is an effective tool for relaxations. All my limbs and body parts
become relaxed when I am in a deep level (as I am practising for long, I could
reach the deep level within a few seconds) and after waking up from the
meditation, I feel a sense of deep freshness around my body and mind. The
meditation process is very simple and requires no extra initiatives to perform. I
just sit on my chair in the office and place my hands in cross over my chest.
Then I take deep breathes for two to three minutes. It helps to make the body
fresh and also beneficial for the respiratory organs insides. Next, I imagine of
any beautiful place I am wandering on with my favourite personalities. I try to
look every inch of the place and most of the time I go to lonely islands (through
my imagination). After passing five to ten minutes, I wake up and feel relaxed.
It is greatly beneficial to me.

Since I love travelling, in my meditation I travel from place to places and

accordingly try to imagine the real life situations and scenarios on the places.
Sometimes I reconnect with the past memories of my travels in different distant
parts of the country. But I like islands with sea beach most because a sense of
tranquility is felt on the places and I felt several times in my real life. So, I try to
remember the travels and imagine that I am there with someonI like. Sometimes
I pay lonely visits to these places when I am frustrated or stressed out too
much.
Meditation has long been being practised to be relaxed. It is the easiest way to
be relaxed and for that, you do not need any extra preparations, instruments or
any specific locations. You can simply perform meditation by sitting or lying on
floor or bed. But meditation on sitting position is mostly comfortable. I like it
for some other reasons too. Meditation is beneficial to control your negative
emotions like anger, frustrations or resentment. It opens the door of tranquillity
where all your negative emotions will be removed smoothly. Regular practising
meditation will also make you look younger than your actual age and by the
same time will keep you fit.

Model Answer:
Use of computer and internet has become easier and available in Pakistan.
Earlier, the country was lagging behind in technological advancement for
different reasons.
With the advancement of science and technology, India has marched ahead in
line with the other countries and some special events have been occurring in the
country which was impossible to think of a decade ago. The common people
have become technocentric and use computers, internet connections in their day
to day life. The number of social networking site users has also increased in the
country. But all such issues were out of imagination and people used to avoid
technology for various mysterious reasons.
The changes did not take place in overnight. It took long years to bring the
changes and hard efforts were also invested. Due to religious reasons, most of
the people are afraid of using technologies as they were told only about the
detrimental impacts of using technology. The benefits were trickily concealed to
them and thus they were lagging behind. With the advancement of time, their
needs increased and to meet the increasing demands, they started using
technology gradually. They received benefits of technology and shared the
issues with the fellow people and consequently they got versed with the
internet, using of computer applications and numerous technological issues and
gradually India has become one of the IT service providers across the world.
It took a long time to get adopt with the internet. Earlier, the common people
used to believe that the internet is the way to kill time by watching stripped
images of women or some other similar things. They did not have the idea to
use the technology in a creative way. When the neighbouring countries were
marching ahead of India, it started realising the mistakes of ignoring the
technology and its wings. Then with different government and nongovernment
initiative, the use of internet spread across the country. Besides, the prices of
computers were higher in the beginning and after the year of 2005, the prices
started to reduce and many of the common people now have their access to the
internet with their personal computers.
The effects of using technology are extensive on the lives of the India citizens.
The commoners used to perform manual work for their living and now a notable
portion among the common people are working using the internet. Their lives
have been changed to a great extent and the living standard has also increased to

a satisfactory level. Besides, the country is also earning foreign currency from
the IT sector. The elementary schools have also introduced courses on
information and technology to make kids familiar with the technologies and
advancements. Now India is much better than ever before for the acceptance of
technology in its everyday life.
If you can talk about the cue card topic "Describe an important
technological advancement in your country." you should be able to talk
about the following IELTS cue cards as well:

Model Answer:
Travelling to overseas is always fun for me and I do not miss the chance of
shopping during the trips. Last summer I went to Singapore for an official visit
and had bought a faded jeans pant that I did not like.
I went to Singapore from my office to train up the local employees. The training
issues were diversified and I was stressed after the day-long training. Thereby, I
went at Bugis Street to get some knickknacks and clothing for my family. A
Singapore office staff accompanied me. This was a street market and pretty
nice. So, I got some essentials for my family according to their list and also

bought a faded light white-coloured jeans pant for me. The pants looked
gorgeous and the style was different too. Moreover, the price was reasonable
too. The seller wanted to sell another piece of the same colour pants but my
wallet vetoed there.
When I arrived at Singapore, my colleagues were saying that the street markets
are the place to get the good things at a reasonable price. Since it was my first
visit to the country, I did not have any clear idea of shopping here and
accordingly went to the Bugis Street, one of the largest local street markets
selling a good number of things. A local of the city and our office Singapore
branch employee guided me through the market and helped me cordially to get
the desired things. I bought the pants from the clothing section and I also bought
some other attire too for my family members after their demands on the list. The
jeans pant was light white and in colour with a fade shade and importantly it
was the right fit for me.
Usually, I wear tailor made attires but regarding jeans, I have a specific choice. I
prefer the slim fitting pants and if the pants do not get fit with my body shape, I
do not get them. The jeans pant was of the classic style and fitted me perfectly.
But there were some designs on the hip pockets and few fabrics were twisted on
the front side which attracted me. There were some other colours available at
the shop like light blue, medium blue, dark blue, faded jeans and more. The
light white faded jeans received my attention.
The jeans pant was fine for me until it was taken to have a wash. It was the first
time I gave the pant with other clothes to be washed at the hotel I was staying in
Singapore. When they delivered the clothing, it was a sad event for me. The
faded jeans pant turned more fade. Besides, the designs in front and back lost
their beauty for the cleaning and some of the fabrics were torn too. When asked
about the worst condition, the cleaners replied that the fabric turned weak after
it was washed with soap water. They also pointed that the fabric quality was not
up to the mark and thereby it was sold in an extremely cheaper rate. In fact, I
should have been careful in buying the jeans pant.

Describe an important decision you have made.

You should say:

what it was

whether it was a good decision or not

And explain what effect that decision had on you.

Model Answer:
Smoking is undoubtedly a bad habit and I have given it up for the healthy living
of myself and my family around three years ago.
I was a chain smoker and used to smoke around three packets of cigarettes a
day. I started smoking from my teenage (I was 17 or 18 at that time) and
smoked numerous cigarettes before I quit it in my 32. It was a hefty task for me
to give up the attraction of cigarettes. But I came to know that cigarettes contain
numerous toxic elements and those create the addiction for the tobacco.
Nicotine is the most prominent element contained in cigarettes and the
attraction of nicotine is more dangerous than getting addicted to heroin. So, I
tried my best to get rid of the addiction.
During my cigarette smoking tenure, I was having several physical disabilities.
There were few troubles in my respiratory process. Sometimes I felt pain in
chest and it appeared that the chest has become congested. Besides, I lost
appetite and could not sleep well at night. Whenever I used to wake up at night,
I lit a cigarette stick and tried to sleep after puffing the entire pieces but in vain.
Gradually the symptoms started bothering me and became the issue of concern
to my family. When consulted the doctor, it came out that the troubles were the
detrimental impacts of tobacco use. But I did not trust his words and continued
smoking again. The symptoms were severe and finally I had to give up
smoking. It was important for me to give up smoking to live a healthy life.
Certainly, the decision to give up the habit was perfect for me. My health was
deteriorating and all my family members were worried about my health.
Smoking has numerous negatives impacts and I came to know after studying the
bad impacts of smoking on the internet. The passive smokers are more affected
than the smokers and I thought that I have damaged the health of my wife and
kids when I smoked cigarettes before them inside my home. I felt guilty for that.
In line with my illness, they also could have developed some other fatal disease
but they are fortunately saved with divine blessings.

I am quite fine now. After giving up smoking, I am feeling fresh, and the
respiratory disorders have gone forever. Now I have fresh breathing and I do not
need to take any mouth freshener before joining any formal events. Besides, the
rooms at my home are free of bizarre smells that produced from the cigarette
smoke. Moreover, I am saving money, the remaining money that I used after
having three packets of cigarettes daily. My family members, especially my
daughters are happy now and my relationship with them has become more
intimate. Earlier, I did not come into a close contact with them lest they feel the
odours emitted from my body due to smoking, but now I do not have such
issues to consider before going to them to have fun with different childish ways.

Model Answer:
A home provides a safe shelter for all the beings regardless of humans or
animals. So, it should be comfy and well decorated for everyone.
I mostly prefer a living place that should be spacious and there should be plenty

of foliages around me. Usually, such locations are unavailable in the cities and
thus I prefer rural areas. If the there is a lake or pond beside my home, that
would be preferable to me. A serene atmosphere is the best place to make ones
own home and I prefer a similar space which will be filled with serenity and the
surrounding environment will be quiet. The environment should be natural and
every moment living inside the house will be enjoyable. But the best house for
me would be near any sea beach where I could enjoy the sunset and sun rising
scenes.
I do not need a hugely built furnished house to live in but it should be
moderately spacious. Provision for natural light is a must for the house and it
should also contain standard size windows for ventilation. Besides, the house
should have at least three rooms for my necessities. One should be the master
bedroom for my sleeping, and there should be another small bedroom for guests
with a medium living room. Besides, there should be wide verandah where I
could set a chair to enjoy the surrounding natural beauty. I would appreciate a
two storied building built on a small piece of land where the bedrooms will be
on the first floor and the living room on the ground. , and if such homes are
unavailable a single storied home with the same facilities will do for me.
The house should have three rooms at least with proper ventilation (as I said
before) and should have an enriched library or at least a large size bookshelf. I
do not need luxurious furniture but those should be durable for use and simple
in terms of design and style. Heavy curtains should hang in the window so that I
could make the room dark in my needs or during the sleeping hours. It would be
appreciated if the house faces south. The living room will be filled with
comfortable sofas and small tables, few small plants on the corners, a showcase
in a corner and the bookshelf beside the showcase. The wood furniture should
be coloured in light black while the walls will be white or any eye soothing
colour. The bedroom should be of light blue colour while guest room might be
like green or orange, and the kitchen should be white. Everything should be
organised in the right way.
I like to live comfortably. Everything should be in the proper manner and order
and only those are found only in an organised home. I also prefer living in a
quiet environment filled with natural environments. I love gardening but since it
is impossible to make a garden of my own, I prefer the house should be
surrounded by trees. I want my house to be decorated in a natural and pleasant a
way that it should be the best place of attraction for me. I will come here after a
tiring day and when I will be on the verandah with a cup of tea, the natural
environment will make me feel relaxed.
If you can talk about the cue card topic "Describe your ideal home or place

to live." you should be able to talk about the following IELTS cue cards as
well:

Describe a house or home that impressed you.

Describe an ideal home you would like to live in.

Talk about a perfect place you have visited.

Describe the house you live in.

Describe a big house or home you have visited.

Describe your favourite means of transport.
You should say:
what is it
when and how often you use it
why you use it
And explain why it is your favourite transport.
[You will have to talk about the topic for one to two minutes. You have one
minute to think about what you're going to say. You can make some notes to
help you if you wish.]

Model Answer:
Based on the importance, transportation is termed as the most important fact
and we cannot do without it for a single day. Amid different types of
transportation mode, I prefer the bicycle.

A bicycle is a very common and popular transportation mode and is available

around the world. It is mostly used for its light and easy carrying system and for
its health benefits as well. The wheels are attached to a frame for smooth
movement. It was introduced in the beginning of the 19th century and due to its
easy operation, it became famous globally. Interestingly, the number of bicycles
produced after its invention has surpassed the number of automobiles. Bicycles

are the key transport modes in the backwards geographical locations. It also
helps the riders to keep fit as they are to drive it using its foot pedals.

Traffic congestion is a frequent event in my locality in India and most of the

time I get late for my office. I have bought a bicycle mostly to go to my office
and use it not only for reaching office I use it to go other places as well. I can
reach my office in due time and also could reach the other necessary places
without getting late for the appointments. Besides, I can have access to a bicycle
where even a motorbike cannot enter. So, the riding on a bicycle is beneficial
for me. If I use public transports, I have to stand in a queue to get on the
vehicle. Moreover, the traffic congestion occurs more during the office hours.
So, I ride my bicycle to reach the destinations, particularly at the office before it
is late.

Riding a bicycle has numerous benefits. Firstly, it makes you fit on each of your
ride every day. The bicycle requires physical labour to ride on. You are to pedal
the cycle using your legs to move on and that pedalling requires lot of physical
energy. It helps to burn the fat, strengthens your leg muscles, ankles and feet
and thus makes you fit physically for your daily activities. Moreover, you could
reach your destinations quickly and could also move in places where
motorbikes cannot enter easily. Riding a bicycle is much better than running in
the morning or evening. So, I started using the bicycle in my everyday
transportation.

A bicycle is my preferred mode of transportation for different reasons. Firstly, it

is economic to ride on a bicycle as the price of fuels and gas is on the rise. So, if
you are on your bike, you are saving your bucks. Secondly, riding helps to feel
you relaxed physically. As you are riding, you are having physical exercise and
that will remove all your stresses away. Besides, it helps to lose the unwanted
weights from your body and regular riding will change your shape and also will
improve your stamina. Safety is another issue which is rarely found in the other

transportation mode. When you are riding, you will pedal after your needs and
there is no need to start racing with the other vehicles, thus there are
comparatively fewer chances of accidents.

Describe a decision which you have made that you feel was wrong.
You should say:

what the decision was and why you made that decision

how long it took to realize that it was a wrong decision

why you think it was a wrong decision you made

and explain how you would alter that decision if you could.

Model Answer:
Learning a language requires some specific set of qualities like patience,
willingness, perseverance etc. but my unstable nature lacks the all of those to
continue something important for me. I failed to learn the German language.
I have some business relations with Germans and they frequently contact with
me over different business issues, and unfortunately it was troublesome to speak
English with them. I had to repeat the statements several times during the
telephonic conversations or had to make the issues clearer on email
correspondence breaking down the statements into very simple sentences. So, I
decided to learn the German language. I was in a dream of discoursing with the
Germans fluently in their native language and they were amazed by my aptitude
in German. But all my dreams shattered when my language instructor asked me
to speak something in German after attending for a month. My failure to speak
German took me out of the course.
When I ran out of German Words, I could not continue the conversation with
the instructor and the situation was embarrassing for me. All the mates laughed
at me and I felt a deep sense of shy for my inability to speak German. So, I
thought if I cannot speak German with the instructor, how could it be possible
for me to speak with the natives? As a result, I gave up attending classes from
the next class. The class used to be held thrice in a week and I started missing

the classes after passing one and a half month with the course. I thought that I
should keep communicating with the clients as I am doing now and that is much
better than being ashamed before the class.
After attending the course for the first day, I started communicating with the
clients in German and they appreciated me on hearing about my German
learning attempt. I used English to German dictionary for communication with
them and gave up the dictionary after the course admission. The troubles started
to arrive when the Germans asked me numerous issues in their native language
and it was difficult for me to decipher. About one month later, after leaving the
course, I realised that truly it is tough for me to communicate in an unskilled
way. Translating the German into English consumed more time and sometimes I
could not get the right meanings too which lead to minor misunderstanding
between my client and I.
It was a wrong decision for me. I did not realise the importance of the language.
It is natural that when you have something in your hand, you will not feel the
weight until you are dropping that. The same event happened with me. The
necessities emerged right after the moment I left the course. If I continued
learning the language, I could have a better communication with them. I had to
count the financial losses as well my emotional state.
If I had the option to go back into the class, I would take the chance. But they
only admit students for twice in a year and now I have to wait for the next
admission announcement. If I get the chance to get admitted in the course again,
I will be attentive than ever and will follow the instructions too. It has become a
must for me to learn the language for my professional purpose.

Describe a person who you believe dresses well.

Model Answer:
Saying goes that a man is judged by his clothes. In true sense, clothing is a very
special thing to make people feel noticed and Mr. Samuel Robertson, my
teacher for English languages dresses very well.

Beauty depends on a good dress. Having a good dress is one of the prerequisites
to be count. People mostly ignore the individuals with poor or below standard
clothing. So, to maintain the society and get valued, one needs to maintain
proper dress code or dress well. Mr. Robertson is my English language
instructor in the colleges and I have never seen him dress informally. Even
when I went to meet him at his home for some instructions over an essay
composition, I find him in formal attires too. Once asked about the formal dress,
he replied that he never compromises with his dresses and loves to be formal
every time except when he is in sleeping mode.

Mr. Robertson usually wears formal suits. He has several suits and they are of
different colours. He wears leather shoes with the shoes. Besides, his colour
combination is also adorable. He combines his shirts with the suit colours. For
instance, when he is in his black suit, he wears a white formal shirt along with a
red tie. When he is wearing a blue suit, he wears a black shirt with a dark
coloured tie. Besides, his tie knotting styles are different and he never ties the
knot in the same way as he did on his last working day. He back brushes his hair
with soft hair gel which makes an outstanding look for him.

Last summer I got admitted in British Council in Paris and met Mr. Samuel
Robertson. The British council authority assigned Mr. Robertson, a British

national, for us to learn pure British English. So, he accordingly instructs us

English. I have developed English very well after attending the course. Mr.
Robertson teaches the language spontaneously and as we are all professionals
here, he also allows meeting him after the class or invites at his home if anyone
fails to meet him after the class. He is active in social networking and all of his
students are linked with him either on Twitter or via Facebook.

It is solely my own observation and opinion that the British people love to be
formal. They are a formal nation and prefer to maintain the formalities and
customs everywhere. Regarding their dress code, they also want to continue the
formal tradition and literally they do it. I have seen him even in the hot summer
day he is in his black suit which would be uncomfortable for me or anyone else
of the class. The sense of being formal everywhere might be deeply graved in
their minds. So, they are always formal. But it should not be taken as a negative
remark. In the current days, a well-dressed body is also required with a wise
brain to bloom.

If you can talk about the cue card topic "Describe a person who you believe

Describe a person you admire.
Describe someone in your family who dresses differently.
Describe a person who is always well groomed.
Describe someone who you like to spend time with.

A person you know who is very intelligent.

Talk about something you like doing during the winter.

You should say:

what you do
where you do it
what clothes or equipment you need
And explain why you like doing it during the winter.
[You will have to talk about the topic for one to two minutes. You have one
minute to think about what you're going to say. You can make some notes to
help you if you wish.]

Model Answer:
Greece is a land of ancient history. A wide range of historical events has taken
place in the land. Besides, in the current days, the country takes different looks
in different seasons. It looks most beautiful during the winter season. There are
a good number of things to do in Greece during the winter. Thus, I do not need
to worry much about things to do in this season. I mostly like to participate in
special winter film festivals held in Thessaloniki each year and I will go there
this year as well. I like to watch movies on the festivals and enjoy walking on
the streets illuminated with colourful lights during the festival time. The entire
location takes the shape of a festive mood and the night views are breathtaking.
Moreover, when if I have more times to spend, I either read novels published
from home and abroad or pass the leisure hours with my family and friends by
inviting them at my place.

Usually, the festival takes place in Thessaloniki in Greece and the place is
occupied with events round the year. I come to visit the place particularly in
winter as the climate is adorable and watching movies are great fun to me
during this time of the year. Besides, there are some other places as well where I
take the walk in the evening hours to remove my day-long boredom. Mostly I
visit the sea shore where one can have the breezes, free of all forms of
pollutions, is found that will take away all of your tiredness. Sometimes I go to
the downtown of Thessaloniki and this is a very populous place. People of

almost all countries are found here and mostly they come to visit the historical
places.

To continue the visit at the festivals during the winter, I need some heavy
clothes to prevent the cold. Since the locality is laid by the sea front, there are
too cold comparing the other parts of the city. The movies are screened on the
island harbour area and when the shows are on outdoor; the freezing wind is felt
severely. So, I take proper precautionary measures. Generally, when I go to the
festivals, I wear a heavy jacket, cover my head with a woolen cap, a heavy pant,
wear hand gloves and then cover me with a woolen overcoat. In a word, I make
myself wind-proof. It is truly enjoyable for me. I learnt to cover myself from a
real life experience a couple of years ago. I came to enjoy a movie on the film
festival and had caught a severe cold for the surrounding environment. That was
a practical lesson for me.

Winter is the best season in Greece. The entire environment remains calm and
quiet. The nature turns pale a bit but that brings a different look to them.
Besides, the crowds are not seen on the regularly crowded places and thus the
streets are free of noises. In such moments, I feel comfort to watch movies or
read books alone. In fact, to me, it appears that being alone in winter makes me
feel better for several reasons. The most important factor is that I can feel
entirely alone. The feelings of enjoying a movie alone cannot be expressed in
words and when it is by the side of a sea, the feelings turns very special.
Besides, reading the novels at room heated by charcoal is also outstanding.
When I feel lonely most, then I invite the friends or the other family members to
accompany me. Then I arrange for a small private party.

Talk about a musical instrument you would like to be able to play.

You should say:
what musical instrument it is

what it looks like

what it sounds like
and explain why you would like to be able to play it.
[You will have to talk about the topic for one to two minutes. You have one
minute to think about what you're going to say. You can make some notes to
help you if you wish.]

Model Answer:
I love music and prefer the heavy metal genre. Thereby, I am accustomed to the
electric guitar and would like to be able to play it someday.

There is a wide range of guitars are available and the history of guitar dates
back to the 12th century. It was introduced as a musical instrument in Europe,
then. Afterwards, guitars underwent lots of modification. An electric guitar is a
modern invention and used to play different base tones with amplification.
Basically, the electric guitars could be of different size and shape, but the
common electric guitars are found with bodies like hollow, semi-hollow or
solid. I prefer the solid body for it is a bit heavier than the hollow body guitars.
The sound is amplified with a radio transmitter or pitch cable and in some cases,
the sounds could also be modified for the electric guitar. When played, the
electric guitar is able to create an intolerable sound as well for the modern
amplification system.

The electric guitars have a majestic look with different parts of it. The parts
include the headstock, nut, tuning pegs, frets, inlays, truss rod, neck joint,
strings, saddle, fretboard, body, pickups, pots, bridge, pickguard, sound board,
sound hole, sides, back part etc. With the combination of all these components,
a guitar usually looks different from the other musical instrument. They usually
look slim and sophisticated with the sleek design. But the guitars look different
with their solid body design when they are played and the solid body design
become famous after the Second World War. Different sorts of strings are used
in electric guitars like lighter string or heavier strings etc. With the lighter

strings, the guitar looks dissimilar and sometimes appears that there are no
strings at all when you look at the guitar from a distance while the heavier
strings look good with the trimmed guitar body.

Well, the tones and sounds of electric guitar are different from the other guitars,
especially from the acoustic guitars. The sounds may appear harsh in the
beginning if it is not followed by any tone. When the electric guitar is in full
fledge the tones are highly enjoying and without its presence, it appears that the
music is incomplete then. The sounds are sometimes higher and lower and
mostly depend on the strokes on the strings by the guitarist. If you tap slightly
on the strings, the sound will be lower while if you raise the volume level, the
minor tape will be heard like an explosion as well.

I along with four of my friends have planned to form a heavy metal band. We
are also planning to compose and sing songs initially on a small scale and then
we will try to grow our band. I am assigned with the duties of bass guitarists
and thus I have to learn to play the guitar, particularly the electric guitar.
Electric guitars help to raise the musical beauty. The heavy tone brings a sense
of thrill among the audience and the performers on the stage.

Describe something enjoyable you can do on a computer.

You should say:
what it is
what equipment or software you need to do that
why and how often you do it
and explain why you enjoy doing this on a computer.

[You will have to talk about the topic for one to two minutes. You have one
minute to think about what you're going to say. You can make some notes to
help you if you wish.]

Model Answer:
The computer is comparatively a latest invention and still is being modified
with numerous upgrades. Using Microsoft PowerPoint to create visual
presentations is an interesting task for me.

Microsoft PowerPoint is an application on computer operated with windows

operating system. This is actually a way to make presentations and present them
before audiences. It is a great way to present a large number of things and also
helpful to get the issues clearly. Saying goes that a picture is worth thousand
words and it is true for the PowerPoint presentations. The program allows the
users to place photos or add video clips that could be played during the
presentation. I am greatly benefited with the application. When the topics are
discussed through the application, the discussions become easier and the
listeners could be able to comprehend the discussed issues, not for the
presenting style of the presenter rather than the multimedia clips and images
make it simple for them.

Initially, a personal computer is enough to make the presentation. You can check
the presentation on your computer screen and it is appropriate for small scale.
But when I plan for a larger audience, I have to take a couple of tools and stuff
including a laptop, a projector machine, a large screen and screen stand. I
connect the projector to the laptop and then project the presentation on the
screen set a few yards away from the projector. The larger the projector is set,
the bigger the images are. Besides, I need amplifiers as well to make sounds that
I add with the presentation.

When I entered the high school as a junior lecturer, I had to take classes without
any multimedia system. But this was an old technique to take classes and
proved failure for the students to comprehend any specific issues on the class.
So, I started making presentations over the specific issues to make the thing
clear to the students. That was done after lots of struggles and had also taken
permission from the school authority. But now I am taking classes regularly
with the system and have made lots of presentations over the mathematical
issues. Now I use the presentations around five days in a week when I take
classes. But I specifically use the presentations to make the complicated issues
clearer for the students. There are some other teachers who prefer to put all the
things on their presentations to exhibit before the class.

Making power point presentations are good for me and it is interesting as well.
Sometimes I have to add pictures of mathematical terms or equations which I
collect from different sources from the internet and check properly about the
copyright issues. Sometimes, I make videos by myself with my smartphone or
insert small movies clips on the presentation related to the discussing issues so
that the kids could understand effortlessly. The top most important factor is that
the students are performing much better than they before in my course. Thereby,
I like to make power point presentations on a computer. Their success inspires
me to make more presentations and make their studies easier.

Talk about something you or someone you know collects.

You should say:

what you or this person collects

how the collection is stored

how quickly the collection is growing

and say what kind of person would enjoy collecting that thing, and why?
[You will have to talk about the topic for one to two minutes. You have one
minute to think about what you're going to say. You can make some notes to
help you if you wish.]
Model Answer:
Collecting foreign coins is my hobby and many of my relations bring foreign
coins for me. I have a huge collection of coins while some of them are aged

over centuries.
Coins are different for me. I like to collect coins and I have a rare collection of
coins where many of the coins belong to early of the 19th century. Some of my
relations are on the view that collecting the coins will bring no benefits for me
but I do it from my passion. I am well aware that coin collections are not the
sources of income and I am not a reputed collector as well, I collect the metals
only to meet my desire to get them. The beautiful descriptions on the coins
attract me most and I also could imagine a bit how the situations were in those
days when the coins were used for transactions. Sometimes I try to feel the
touches of the people gone with the age who have used the coins.
I actually do not follow any standard way to store coins rather I have my own
style. I have bought a large size book with plastic pockets inside instead of
paper. It is like an album where photos are kept. I place the coins inside the
pockets and write names of the country or origins. At times I use scotch tapes to
paste the coins with the pages. I, in fact, do not follow any system of procedure
as those appear complex to me. I collect coins for my own interest and thereby
it is unnecessary for me to follow any specific rules or methods which are done
during exhibitions. I was motivated to collect coins from my childhood and
nurtured it as my hobby. The coins are stored only for my personal enjoyment
and even I do not show the collection to anyone else. This is my own world.
The collection book has been almost filled up with coins and it took about 16
years for me to collect all the coins I have now. I have collected the coins of
different states and tried to gather all types of available coins from the countries.
Sometimes my relatives who went to travel in different countries brought the
coins for me as they knew I am a junior coin collector. Sometimes I have
purchased the coins from commercial stores selling foreign coins and
currencies. But I had to pay more during the collection from the money
exchangers and most of the times they did not want to sell single coins or small
amount. Thereby, the coins are my greatest wealth of my life. I had to spend lots
of times in collecting the coins and sometimes I had to fight with the other boys
of my class who wanted to grab my collection.
Coin collection is not a very easy task and requires a lot of unnecessary hours to
gather all the coins together. Moreover, neither the task is not exciting nor it

provides any financial or other benefits to the collectors. So, people who want
enjoyment with their hobbies cannot be successful coin collectors. Coins are
only pieces of metal and sometimes you even cannot use them in your need. So,
if you collect coins, it will incur you loses as sometimes you are to buy them at
a higher cost than you expect. Besides, this is not the thing to show off. So, a
person who is introvert like can collect coins. If you exhibit your coins to your
surrounding people, they may not appreciate the collection after your desired
level which may make you mentally upset. So, the extrovert people will not be
as much delighted like the introvert. Therefore, I think coin collection is a great
hobby for the inquisitive people.

Describe an historical place you have been to.

You should say:

and explain how the place is related to history.

Model Answer:
The Taj Mahal, located in Agra, India, is one of the wonders of the world and
symbolises love of Mughal emperor Shah Jahan to his wife Arjumand Banu
Begum, commonly termed as Mumtaz Mahal. This is a unique building in the
world that has gained attention from the global travellers and I went there in last
year as a team member of German Cultural Affairs.
The Taj Mahal is, in fact, a tomb located on the south bank of Yamuna River in
Agra in India. This is a mausoleum and has been made in remembrance of his
beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal to make her memory immortal. The body of
Mumtaz Mahal and Shah Jahan lies under the large dome. This is the only
historical building in India that has been placed on the list of Wonders of the
World. The construction date is exactly not known but it is estimated that the
construction began around 1600 century. The entire building is made of white
marble. Besides, the structure took over 20 years to complete while 20,000
workers were involved with the construction. It is rumoured that the emperor
had cut the hands of the workers who made the structure so that they cannot

make another such building on the planet. Though the event is highly brutal, it
shows the deep love and respect to his wife. One of the important factors about
the building is that the colour of the building changes with the change of time in
the day time and it looks best on a moonlit night.
The Taj Mahal is also considered as the Crown of Palaces for its huge dome and
white marbles. It is a beautiful structure and looks pretty awesome for the
construction style and exterior design. The entire complex is situated on around
42 acres of lands and bounded by walls on sides. The traditional Persian designs
have been applied here in line with the Mughal architecture. The ideas of the
structure have been derived from several Mughal structures and have been
customised according to Shah Jahans will. Before the construction of the Taj
Mahal, the Mughals used red sandstone on their structure while this was the
exception from their traditional construction style. The entire building has been
made of pure white marble and the tomb has been refined perfectly with
precious stones that resemble the choice and preference of the emperor. The top
dome is about 35 meters high and cylindrical. The central dome is accompanied
with four smaller domes and those are placed at a corner of the roof. The main
dome is frequently termed as onion dome for its shape and visually it is great to
look at. The minarets are similar to those used in Mosques. So far it is known
that the construction of the structure was done by 1643 and it costs over 30
million rupees.
The Taj Mahal is located in Agra, under the northern part of Uttar Pradesh state
in India. The building is placed by the side of the Yamuna River. This is around
204 kilometres away from Delhi. This is also a World Heritage Site and has
been selected in 1983 after the UNESCO declaration. Agra is an influential city
in India and been playing a great role. The place has also been recognised in
some of the Hindu scriptures and epics like Mahabharata. Besides, Agra was the
capital of Mughal Empire in the medieval age and been ruled by several
powerful emperors like Akbar, Jahangir and Shah Jahan. The city is now one of
the major tourist spots in India and the Taj Mahal is playing the leading role
here. Despite being a crowded city the site for the Taj Mahal has been picked
carefully and always calm and quiet. The location was also picked smartly for
some strategic reasons and the most important thing was the view of the
building from his palace Agra Fort.
The Taj Mahal has been related to the Indian history immediately after its
construction in the 16th century. This is considered as one of the Muslim art of
India that has been globally recognised. Besides, during the construction
process, a varied number of incidents took place which is also remarkable in
terms of historical importance. Besides, the entire complex took 20 years to
complete which is a rare incident. The most important historical fact is that the

Taj Mahal was made when the Mughals were at the peak of their power and
wealth. As a result, Shah Jahan has used precious stones and gems to decorate
the tomb. After his death, the Mughal Empire started declining and could not
stand back like the former days. To make the structure, artists, masons and other
workers were recruited from different nations including India, Iran and Turkey.
So, this is a great place of historical importance.

Describe an unforgettable advertisement (that you saw or heard).
You should say:

what kind of advertisement it was

what the content of the advertisement were (or what product or service
was advertised)

where you saw or heard it

and explain why you think this is an unforgettable advertisement.
[You will have to talk about the topic for one to two minutes. You have one
minute to think about what you're going to say. You can make some notes to
help you if you wish.]
Model Answer:
It was an attractive advertisement of a US-based soft drink commonly known as
7up. It tastes lemon-lime and non-caffeinated as well. The advertisement is
about the soft drink and how it is able to attract even a half-drawn cartoon. It
shows that a young lady was sitting in a formal situation and she was busy in
drawing a cartoon. When she was served the 7up, she stopped drawing the
cartoon. But when the cartoon character sees the 7up, it draws itself and also
draws a glass so that the lady could pour him the 7up. The advertisement was
partially live and partially animated. The part of the drawing is live. A woman is

sitting alone. She has nothing to do, so she starts drawing a piece of cartoon
after her will. This is the live part. The animated part in the advertisement
begins when the half-done cartoon starts drawing. The advertisement ends with
the appreciation of the cartoon as it has got the drink finally.
I saw the advertisement on television. When I was a kid, the advertisement was
televised regularly. I cannot recall the exact dates and times but as far I
remember, it was the 1990s when the advertisement was aired. It was a popular
advertisement and thus it was aired amid different programmes during the peak
hours. But interestingly, before watching the advertisement, it heard it from one
of my elementary school friends who watched the advertisements. It was he,
Smith, who helped to be familiar with this specific advertisement. In fact, after
being familiar with the advertisement, I waited eagerly to watch the
advertisement. It was one of my favourite advertisements in my childhood and
even I miss it today.
The content of the advertisement was the promotion of a soft and non-alcoholic
drink, 7up. The origin of 7up goes back to the USA. In 1920, the drink was
created and the lemon-lime formula appeared in 1929. Originally it was named
as Bib-Label Lithiated Lemon-Lime Soda. It was also considered as medicine
for stabilising peoples mood. Many of the people with bad moods have used it
as medicine to improve their mental stability. The brand has experienced
numerous ups and downs. It has been sold several times from a group to
another. A good number of variations could be found in the drink but many of
the users have opined that 7up Lime is the best.
Usually, the children remember anything they see or do in their early age. In
most of the cases, it has been found that they can recall the past incidents more
than the adults. When I was a kid of 7 years, I was exposed to this
advertisement. At that time, watching the advertisement was a kind of
entertainment for me. Sometimes I also tried to draw a cartoon and kept a bottle
of 7up near me believing that the cartoon will start drawing itself. But I was
wrong and the cartoon never drew itself on the page as it did on television.
Being a child, I had no idea then that everything we have seen on television was
not real. So, I felt sad and discussed the issue with my friends who laughed at
me for my obsession. For all such reasons, the advertisement has set itself in my
mind. I have seen a good number of advertisements but did not care for them.
As a grown up man, I now believe that everything we see is unreal. There are
always some hidden issues. But as I have lots of memories with the specific
advertisement, this is unforgettable to me.

Model Answer:
During the last summer, in 2015, I went to Greece with my parents and other
family members and had a long walk on the Olympus Mountain range. The
walking lasted for about three and a half hours.

We walked through the entire range and enjoyed the natural beauties of the local
areas. The mountain is considered as the second highest mountain in the country
and also admired by both the local and international travellers for its association
with the Greek mythology. Many events have taken place in the mountain and it
was the residence of 12 Gods of Greek mythology. But currently, the hiking
route and the natural beauty is the key attraction for the travellers. The walking
routes contained large croplands, peaks, places for collecting foods and other
necessary materials etc.

We started the walking using the international hiking path at the E4 starts and
the walking ended at the Enipea springs. The entire walking distance was about
1100 meters. During the walking passage, we experienced some stunning
natural scenes. The walking trails were marked clearly and there were many
ascents and descents across the entire route which made the walking more
enjoyable. When we started the walking, the river was left to us and we crossed
some beautiful bridges made with wood. We also visited the Agios Dionysios
Monastery, a beautiful place. The views of the Enipea waterfalls are
breathtaking. Though there were some troubles to ascent and descent on the
trail, the entire walking was enjoyable to me.

I was accompanied by my family at the walk. The family members contained

my parents, my elder brother and sister and my pet dog. We reached at the
entrance with a car and then started the journey. It was interesting for me to
walk such a long distance but all the other members could not enjoy like me. As
I regularly participate in my college sports, I am physically more fit than the
other members. Consequently, my parents and the elder sister had to experience
some troubles. They were lagging behind often and could not keep pace with
me and my elder brother. Besides, they just took breaks after every ten minutes
with the excuse to drink water. However, it was a nice journey for us all.

It was my long desire to go for a long walk or hiking in the mountain. I have
many experiences to walk in flat lands but walking ins a mountain trail was a
completely new experience for me. During the walk in meadows, I did not have
to undergo any stress but in this mountain walk, in fact, I had to take some
stress like the other family members. They stopped frequently, but I controlled
myself from the taking regular breaks, Moreover, the ascent and descent of the
geographical structure also had some impacts on my body as during the upward
slopes, I had to rely on the stick on my hand and sometimes I extended my hand
to my mom while my elder helped my sister. When we reached near the
waterfalls, everyone seemed to be relaxed as the journey was over.

If you can talk about the cue card topic "Describe a long walk you ever had."
you should be able to talk about the following IELTS cue card topics as well:

and explain why this person likes to travel by plane.
[You will have to talk about the topic for one to two minutes. You have one

Model Answer:
Travelling is always pleasant, and if it is on a plane the joys know no bounds.
Travelling on air has some special benefits and there are some people who
prefer to travel on an aeroplane for some specific reasons.

Mr Nicholas Alberto, a Spanish national and businessman whom I share the

apartment in Paris, loves to travel by plane. He is a perfect gentleman and I
have never seen him travel by road for his business and other purposes. In fact,
he loves to travel y planes for some benefits. The first and most important
benefit, according to Mr Alberto, is the comfort. When he travels on a plane, he
feels more comfortable than travelling by road or by sea. Besides, he prefers the
speed. He believes that air travel is the speediest medium of transport. In fact,
there are some truths in his belief. Travelling by air saves more time than

travelling by the other possible means. He also adores the safety issues. To him,
air travel is almost risk-free.

I am a student of Paris College of Art and live in a rented apartment in Paris.

My parents live in Strasbourg. Since my father is a government employee, he
cannot leave his station and my mother is a high school teacher. So, I have to
live alone in the city and I hired an apartment here to live in. As it was a bit
expensive for me, I advertised for a roommate to be with me in the apartment.
Accordingly, Mr Alberto arrived and both of us started sharing the apartment. It
has been about three and a half years we are living under the same roof. He is a
gentleman and most of the time he remains out of the home for his business
purposes. But he shares the rent and some other necessary expenses for the
apartment with me.

Mr Alberto has different business and he is solely responsible to look after all
the things. So, he is always busy. He imports olive oil from Spain and
distributes those in the local markets. Sometimes he also imports spices from
different countries to be sold to the superstores and markets. As a result, he is
always in a hurry. To maintain liaison with the Spanish businessmen and other
people he has to travel in different parts of the globe. Sometimes he travels to
Spain, his native land, sometimes in Asian countries including India,
Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka to collect spices and other food ingredients. I heard
him saying that he also travelled to the South American countries and have
travelled almost half of the world.

Mr Alberto has some special theories of his own and he always follows them. I
have some travelling experiences with him and found that he is fond of comfort.
He never compromises with comfort even if he is to pay some extra bucks.
Since the air travel is more comfortable, he travels by plane in every case. But if
he is to travel inside France, he never uses the public transports rather hires cars
from the car rentals even if it is a half an hour journey. Another important issue

is that he is to maintain deadlines. If he is late to reach the destinations, he may

have to experience losses. So, he does not want to take risks in this case.
Travelling by planes is speedier and takes less time to reach places out of
France. Besides, the travelling by plane is economic in many cases. You do not
need to wait in a queue for tickets or suffer the solar heat in a clogged road. For
all these reasons, Mr Alberto travels by planes in most of the time.

If you can talk about the cue card topic "Describe a person who likes to travel
by plane." you should be able to talk about the following IELTS cue card topics
as well:
Describe someone you know who travels a lot.

Model Answer:
It was on the day of my formal interview at a multinational corporation for the
post of Market Research Executive (MRE) when I forgot to take my interview
invitation card.

I can exactly remember the day, December 23 in 2015. I was invited to appear
on the formal written test for the post of MRE. As per the instructions, I applied
for the position after collecting the advertisement from a daily newspaper. I
applied following all the procedures instructed on the advertisement and
accordingly they confirmed my candidature for the post after justifying my
detailed curriculum vitae. They had sent me the invitation letter a week before
the date. On the day fixed for the formal tests, I went there.

I work for a local corporation and I am also responsible for their entire market
research. So, I had to be very busy most of the time and the interview was set on
a working day. It was set at 12.00pm sharp and I have to be there (at the
headquarters of the corporation) at least 20 minutes before the test begins. So, I
hurried there. I was asked to bring all the relevant documents with me including
the printed version of the invitation to prove my candidature on the entrance. I
took everything except the printed copy of the invitation card. I had printed a
copy and kept that on my office desk. With the tension to reach the place in due
time, I forgot to take the printed copy with me which caused me a great trouble.

Managing the situations was so difficult for me. The security personnel did not
allow me to enter in the building as I could not show them the interview card. I
tried to make them realise that it was my mistake and due to the rush I forgot to
bring that with me. But they argued a lot and by the same time I was racing
against time. It was around 11.50 am and the security officials were arguing
with me that why should they allow me to enter ins the building. I was like a
security threat to them as I did not have the interview invitation card. It was a
great regret for me. I also did not have any contact number then to inform the

Model Answer:
It was a hot summer day. I was planning to move inside the city of Paris in
France. The weather was perfect for a stroll in the city.

Usually, I do not get out in the noon as the sun is too hot and the heat becomes
unbearable. But I tried to do something unusual and started to move in the city
of Paris. In fact, I had never taken leisurely walks in the city during the noon.
So, this was a great experience to me. I had a sunglass in my eyes and a cap on
head. Thereby, the heat had less effect on me. This was a sunny day of mid-June
in 2015. As a student of the local university and a part-timer at a coffee shop, I
did not get enough holidays but I took a day off on the day so that I could get
around the city as the regular works and studies were a bit droning for me.

The day was bright and the sky was clear with a burning sun. Besides, there was
some breeze which made the heat bearable to some extent. Initially, the weather
was dull in the morning and I thought that it might rain, but my idea was wrong.
Within an hour, the weather turned back to its natural form. The clouds were
floating in the sky and the sun started shining. It was a perfect weather for
taking a swim at any beach, but alas! There were no beaches near me where I
could jump off. But I wandered the streets of the city, alone. None agreed to

accompany me on the mid noon under the sun. Besides, the low wind was
passing on which made the walking comfortable and I saw many of the people
were doing the same. But some of them were walking with umbrellas or through
the shaded areas.

I had no exact plan about passing the day. So, I thought that I should walk along
the streets and if I find something suitable for me, I should take part in.
Accordingly, I started for the stroll under the burning sun. Suddenly, after
walking for around half an hour, I met with one of my university friends who
was going for watching a cinema at the adjacent theatre and proposed me to
accompany him. But I humbly declined his proposal as I am unwilling to
confine myself in a theatre whereas I am out to explore the city. So, started
walking again, and when I felt thirst, I bought an ice-cream from a street
vendor. After strolling for about one and half hour, I decided to take a rest. I
took a seat at the Parc des Buttes-Chaumont. I passed about half an hour there
and then started for my place again.

In fact, the summer is too hot in Paris and if you are out of the home without
any protective measures, I am sure you are to suffer a lot. The first annoying
thing is that you will sweat a lot, and have to carry a large hankie to remove the
sweats from your face and body. This is a common issue for many of the people
travelling in Paris at noon. Moreover, there are less shaded areas where you
could take a shelter. But on the day when I got out, it was perfect as the sun was
bright in moderate level. Though the sun heat was almost unbearable, the mild
breeze has made it easier for me to take the walk. Usually, the summer days are
hot and the temperature does not fall to a tolerable level, but on that day, there
were some changes in the temperature. At the afternoon, the temperature fell to
a great extent and walking became easier for me

Describe a television programme you watched and did not enjoy.

- what this TV programme was

Model Answer:
India is the land of over one billion population and accordingly there are
numerous television channels with different attractive shows. Koffee with
Karan is one of the television shows that I did not enjoy.
This was a television show, and to be more specific, this was a talk show in
participation with the celebrities of India. The majority of the Bollywood
celebrities attend on his show and shared their personal and professional events.
The show is alleged to create a sense of controversy as the questions asked here
are often inappropriate. Most of the times, Karan Johar used to ask private
questions which were not supposed to be asked at all, and even media reports
have also been made centring the issues. The show has different seasons and
been closed for past two years after airing the season four in April of 2014.
There are several reasons behind the closure and the directorial engagement of
Karan is the key reason. But there are also chances that the show may
commence again, shortly.
I used to watch the show at my home after its initiation in 2014. Initially the
show was a great success for the show makers. The show was aired on STAR
World India and the other channels of the same network. The show was mostly
made to reveal the secrets of the Bollywood celebrities before the audience. The
show was aired in the evening and I used to watch the show at my own room. A
sense of attraction worked here and knowing about the private events of the
celebrities was always attractive to the audiences. The show actually had a witty
appeal to us. Often I invited some of my intimate friends to come to my house
and enjoy the show and it was great to us to enjoy it together. We used to
discuss about the questions and the reactions of the celebrities.
I think, mostly the show Koffee with Karan was entirely made for increasing
the TRPs of that specific television channel in India. The show created a sense
of attraction for the audiences and the host was the key performer to raise the

television rating point. The host used to ask such questions that often the stars
and celebrities felt embarrassed for the nature of the questions. Often Karan
tried to reveal some personal issues and focused on the scandals with the
Bollywood celebrities. Moreover, the other private issues like familial matters,
personal feelings etc. were also revealed on the show. Contemporary issues of
the celebrities were asked and they used to reply against the questions.
Sometime the celebrities tried to hide their private feelings but Karan tried his
best to bring the issues on light.
In the early seasons of the show, I enjoyed them. But when I grew up and got
matured, started understanding the value of privacy, the show started to lose its
appeal from me. Asking irrelevant questions on a television show, insisting over
answering the questions, flirting with the female celebrities, irritating them by
asking private issues, raise of controversies over the issue, negative media
reports etc. all made me to lose interest on it. Moreover, I have observed that
when the celebrities were asked irrelevant or private questions, they used to
provide misinformation to the audience and it appeared that they did not want
the audience to know about them. Besides, the host had a possessive attitude
during the show and it appeared that he was introducing the celebrity for the
first time to the nation. It was his kindness that he invited the celebrity and
without him, the celebrity was nothing. All these attitudes cast a negative impact
on me over the show and I stopped watching it from its third season.
