Observation #2

November 1, 2016 Grade 2

Strengths

Needs improvement

She details that a 10 is made up of 10 ones.

Uses small boards
Manipulatives are available to all sts and sts are
given a choice of using them or drawing

Sts are able to handle activities that take

more than a few minutes. Most of the sts
understand the lesson and can be
assigned independent work. Weak sts
need individual/ small group attention.
Find time to sit and work with weaker sts. (
Seen and done later in the lesson)
While working with weaker sts, do not
forget the rules: active learning! Make sure
they are ALL learning . Watching is not
learning. ( done and seen later)
Make sure that the sts at their places have
work that will keep them busy for the
duration of the time it takes to work with
weaker sts.
There is no true progression of difficulty in
activities.

Competency

Observations

Professionalism
:

Highly professional.

Planning for
learning:

Lesson is carefully planned out and well prepared.

Implementing
and managing
learning:

In control of her class, aware of time, gives clear instructions. Keeps

teacher talking time to a minimum.

Monitoring and
assessment:

Monitors students and documents ability. .

For one fo the opening activities the tr asked the sts to write the number 14 and put a circle
around the 1s and a line under the tens. This was done in seconds, but the tr stalled on this,
going around to check. This type of exercise is meant to be super speedy, sts can raise the
boards. 3 or 4 practices could have been done in the time it took to do 1.
At this point the tr is capable of carrying out an entire lesson and demonstrates clear
knowledge of teaching basics. What is missing from her lesson is demonstration of action taken
as a result of her observations. The weaker sts can not be fixed by showing them how to solve
the problem at hand, they need more detailed instructions and clearer guidelines along with
more monitored practice. What happens a the end of the lesson? What happens before the start
of the next lesson? Are the weaker sts expected to be at the same level as others at the start of
each lesson, even when nothing is done to put them there?
