On completion of this unit the student should be able to compare the methods used by artists and considerations
of curators in the preparation, presentation, conservation and promotion of specific artworks in at least two
different exhibitions.
Time to complete the task: 5 weeks

Main Inquiry Question: How do artists and curators, prepare, present, conserve and promote artworks during
Art Exhibitions?
Sub-questions:

What are some of the characteristics evident in the different types of gallery spaces you have visited this
year?
Consider the methods of and intentions in exhibiting artworks in public art galleries and museums,
commercial and private galleries, artist run spaces, alternative art spaces, university art galleries and
museums, outdoor spaces and online galleries, which have been visited this year. How to they compare
with one another?
How have specific artworks been presented in different exhibitions? What were the artists and gallery
curators intentions in presenting the artwork in this way?
What do curators need to consider in terms of exhibition design and promotional methods involved in
preparing and presenting specific artworks for display?
What are methods and considerations were involved in the conservation of specific artworks in the
exhibitions you have visited this year?
Have you used appropriate art terminology?
Learning Objectives: The students will be able to:

Identify and describe the characteristics of different types of gallery spaces visited in the current year of study.
Describe and compare the methods of and intentions in exhibiting artworks in public art galleries and museums,
commercial and private galleries, artist run spaces, alternative art spaces, university art galleries and museums,
outdoor spaces and online galleries, which have been visited in the year of study.
Analyse how specific artworks are presented in different exhibitions and demonstrate an understanding of the
artists and gallery curators intentions.
Analyse and evaluate curatorial considerations, exhibition design and promotional methods involved in
preparing and presenting specific artworks for display.
Analyse and evaluate methods and considerations involved in the conservation of specific artworks related to
exhibitions visited this year.
Employ appropriate terminology.

Instructions:
Imagine you are a reporter for The Arts section of The Age newspaper. It is your job to write an
interesting and informative page article to be published in the paper. In the article, you need to
compare the practices of the Monash Gallery of Art, with the practices of at least one other gallery (of
your choice) Please note: You must have attended both galleries during the current year.


Undertake thorough research and develop a detailed and articulate article, which clearly addresses the main
inquiry question and sub-questions. (Include 2 to 3 relevant images)

considerations, exhibition design and promotional methods involved in preparing and presenting specific artworks for display. Very detailed
analysis and evaluation of methods and considerations involved in the conservation of specific artworks related to exhibitions visited this
year. Excellent use of appropriate terminology.
