MATH 312 - Spring 2012

Midterm Exam II

You may use two 3 5 notecards while you take this exam. No calculators, no course notes, no
books, no phones, no help from your neighbors. Show all work, even on multiple choice or short
answer questionsI will be grading as much on the basis of work shown as on the end result. Remember to put your name at the top of this page. Good luck.

(a) True or False: The linear filter zk = yk yk2 kills all signals that are periodic with period 2.

(b) True or False: If A is a skew-symmetric 5 5 matrix, det(A) = 0.

(c) True or False: The set of 3 3 matrices A such that A 1 = 0 form a subspace of M3 ,
1
the space of all 3 3 matrices.

(d) True or False: The map : Pn (R) Pn (R) that sends each polynomial p(x) to p(x) + x is
linear.

(e) True or False: If A is m n and rank(A) = r with m r n, then for any b Rm the
equation Ax = b has infinitely many solutions.

(f) True or False: If A is 3 7 and dim(Row(A)) = 2, then dim(Nul(A)) = 1.

2. (8 points) For each of the following, determine whether it is a subspace of the given space. If so,
give a basis for the space.

(ii) The set of all vectors orthogonal to (1, 1, 1) in R3 , as a subset of R3 .

(iii) The kernel of the evaluation map ev: P3 (R) R given by ev(p(x)) = p(3), i.e. the set
{p(x) P3 (R) | ev(p(x)) = 0},
