Why Datasheets ?
Datasheets have valuable information about
Electrical parameters

Max stress levels for a device

Switching characteristics
Information about the usage
Thermal design parameters

Dimensions
Important for PCB design

Diode
Famous general purpose diodes are
1N4148 (general purpose)
1N4001 (rectification)
1N4733A (Zener)
LED

Part/Model # This is unique.

Environment

Packaging type. Dimensions are related

with this number. Useful in PCB design

Part/Model # is not decided by the manufacturer but

by those who filed the patent. Even if this diode is
manufactured by some other company this number
remains the same

This means that the junction temperature inside the semiconductor will rise to 350 K + Ambient
temperature (27C) if the power(Vf*If) across diode is 1 W. Note that for this reason the allowable
power dissipation is 0.5W that limits the thermal resistance to 175K which is acceptable.
