Message From the Executive Officer

The Princi pals First Words

I welcome all the young prospective students

to be part of Sri Venkateswara fraternity.
It is not for nothing that a picture of eminent
educationist Dr S. Radhakrishnan, whom the
nation and educators in particular remember
each year on Teachers' Day, has for long
adorned the precincts of Sri Venkateswara
College. Given the synergistic approach
adopted by a succession of institutional heads
between variant academic disciplines, the
ideal pragmatic midpoint between technodevelopment and preparing the student
body for their serviceability in a burgeoning
market economy on the one hand, and an
inclusivistic liberal-humanistic educational
'vision' on the other has been sustained at Sri
Venkateswara college in a state of
enlightened balance. The total educational
life of the institution is thus informed by a
commitment toward the student's overall
development in the fullest, most holistic sense:
academic, intellectual, cultural, moral and
spiritual. To understand the scale of effort and
objectivity required to successfully meet this
challenge of a multidimensional
development of the targeted beneficiaries of
higher education, it is good to remember that
'vision' is often an intangible, almost ineffable
concept. Educational philosophy on such a
view necessarily includes state of the art
04

infrastructural instrumentalities, yet recognizes

that the instrument's power must be harnessed
by thinking and purposeful application in
social advancement and productivity. To put
it another way, no machine has yet been
invented that can displace the inspired
human mind. Ultimately it is that inspired,
probing, collaterally conscious, socially
responsive and morally sensitized mind that is
the end-objective of a higher learning
programme it scarcely matters whether it be
in the field of the hard sciences, or business
studies, or of the humanities, an enlightened
'vision' strengthens everybody. As educators
our goal has been not to prioritize either Man
or Machine at the expense of each other, but
to encourage an awareness of the coinforming synergy between the twain in a
manner maximally beneficial to the concerns
of the society.
We thus continue to function from our own
educational 'mantra', namely that a society
has needs and concerns, including those of
self-reflection and value determination,
alongside those of the market and
technology, each has its place, and each
gains from awareness of collateral areas. Our
brilliant but dedicated alumni are proof of the
usefulness and success of such a holistic,
creative and organic philosophy of
education.
I wish you all the best for a memorable journey
of your life.

(P. HEMALATHA REDDY)

About The College

The Choice of every student.
The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD)
engaged in the management of the sacred
hill temple of Lord Sri Venkateswara at Tirupati
(Andhra Pradesh) believes that the temple as
a place of worship must bring about national
integration and, schools and colleges should
light up the path of devotion through
education and enlightenment. Inspired by its
zeal to spread the spiritual values and indian
culture, a devout scholar and an active social
worker Dr. Durgabai Deshmukh engaged
some of the finest thinkers of modern India like
Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan, Dr. C. Anna Rao
and Dr. K.L. Rao to establish Sri Venkateswara
College at New Delhi under its aegis in 1961.
Located today in Dhaula Kuan and
acknowledged as the South Campuss
numero uno co-educational college offering
a wide-ranging bouquet of up to date study
programmes and boasting an enrolment
strength rivaling many a small university, it has
expanded over the half century adapting
dynamically and continually to felt needs and
the emerging educational demands of the
times. The College imparts high quality
education to students through innovative
pedagogy and modern training facilities,
provides holistic personality development
through strong academics coupled with
active participation in co-curricular
programmes that include fine arts, sports and
leadership training. The objective is to develop
a sense of ethics and responsibility in students
and to broaden their perspectives so that they
are able to succeed in todays global,
competitive and dynamic environment. The
four guiding principles of the doctrine of indian
culture, namely, dedication and duty,

material well-being for the benefit of society,

pleasure of meaningful living and salvation
through self-knowledge were meant and
remain still the chosen ideals vivifying its
branches of arts, humanities and sciences in
the college. Unsurprisingly then, it is perceived
as a feather in the cap of todays student
community to be able to say that they are a
Venkyite a popular mantle many aspire to,
but only a fraction of the aspirants will
ultimately be able to actually claim.
Sri Venkateswara College today has 180
teaching and 250 non-teaching staff
members and around 3500 students on its roll.
It also offers 10 post-graduate courses for study
and provides one year post-graduate
diploma course in Molecular and Biochemical
technique and a certificate course in German
Language.

Value Based Education

Education is the key determinant of the
conduct of a human being. The scope of
education is to facilitate development of right
understanding and development of right skills.
The subject that deals with what to do ? (and
what not to do ?) is value education it facilitates
development of right understanding. The subject
that deals with How to do? is technical
professional education it enables
development of skills. There is complementarity
between the two, both are required and the
priority is the value, then skills. In the present
education system, Value Based Education is a
missing link to correct serious crises at the
individual, societal and environmental (Handson, Minds-on and Hearts-on education
philosophy). Thus, in higher education the
teaching learning process should be holistic
based on students with the required skill-set for
employment. Minds-on learning to develop
them into independent thinking & flexible
practitioner, to manage rapid change in the
environment. Hearts-on learning to develop
Complete Students, who have the passion for
what they do and self belief and care for the
community and society.

Fine Arts Association

The Fine Arts Association is the cultural fulcrum
of the College comprising different Societies
like the Western and Indian Music, English and
Hindi Dramatics, Choreography, Folk and
Western Dance, Film and Photography and
the Quiz Society.
At the beginning of new academic session,
various societies conduct auditions to select
and enroll students as their members. The
cultural calendar begins with a series of intracollege competitions that gives students,
especially those from First Year, the
opportunity to not just compete but also
integrate and mingle with other students from
the College. In this they are also guided by
both the Convenor as well as Senior members
of their Societies. In this way they forge
important relationships with their peers and
also become important contributing
members of the vibrant community space
that the Fine Arts Associations creates at Sri
Venkateswara College.
Committed to imparting a holistic education,
we at Sri Venkateswara College take great
pride in both, the academic excellence of our
students and also their cultural achievements.
Under the convenorship of Dr. Shalini Sen, we
welcome once again students to hone their
talents and be a part of The Fine Arts
Association and SVC.

Debating Society
We understand the important role that
18

debating plays along with other pedagogical

requirements. We have a very active and
highly awarded Debating Society that is
ranked among the best in the University. Over
the years we have cultivated and nurtured
talent to provide them with the fuel and drive
to participate as extensively and keenly in
debates as possible.
Regular activities at intra-college level help
students to prepare for debates held at interUniversity, national and international level.
Under the teacher co-ordinator and students
in-charge a yearly calender of debates is
made to allow maximum exposure through
participation from the very first year onwards.
