Abstract
1

CFD package (Ansys) is used to simulate the flow over a double

wedge airfoil in case that the flow is steady, laminar and supersonic. Angle of
attack ( ) and the chord ratio t/c are parameterized so that nervier-stokes
equations is solved over that airfoil. The project will be conducted through
high Mach number flow with adaptive gridding technique and pseudo time
stepping methodology, after that the work will be compared with inviscid shock
expansion theory.

Introduction
There are two main types of airfoils which are double wedge airfoil
and Bi-convex.

There are singularities problems such as expansion waves and

shockwaves appears when these bodies treat a supersonic flow, which causes
undesirable effects, like increasing the drag causing what is called wave drag,
to minimize wave drag, the shock must be attached to the body as much
possible as we can to do that, a thinner cross section with sharp trailing and
leading edges are required that is much better. On the other hand having a
round leading edge airfoil produces a detached shock that has higher drag than
the attached shock. Generally the airfoils are designed such that lift to drag

ratio is maximized as possible. For this project the aerodynamic responses will
be calculated for a constant Mach number which is 2.5 and the angle of attack
and thickness to chord ratio. This will be done by using adaptive meshing after
that the results will be compared with a theoretical shock-expansion theory
results.

Aerodynamics coefficients:
Pressure, lift and drag coefficients are non-dimensional numbers, that
are independent on free stream velocity and density. For a constant chord
length c and span =1m.
Lift and drag and other aerodynamics parameters can be generalized.
