CMC256: AUX DC
CMC 256 test sets have 2 banana connectors where an auxiliary voltage in the range of 0 to 264 VDC
(maximum 50 W) is provided. There is an integrated monitoring function that indicates an Overload under
certain conditions.
Overload shall be indicated in case a connected load requires more than 50 W or the output is shorted.
The way the overload indication is implemented now causes irritations sometimes. Overload is indicated
in some cases where the operator would not expect the warning.
AuxDC Hardware
Aux DC
120uF
82k
The basic idea of AuxDC is powering connected test objects like protective relays. In order to smooth the
current ripple a big output capacitor (120 uF) is used.
If the output voltage is changed from 0 V or a small voltage to the wanted higher setting (i.e. 220 V)
an AuxDC Overload is induced for a short time. This is because the voltage a being increased while
current is limited.
AuxDC Overload
If the voltage is changed from a high value (i.e. 110V) to a lower value (i.e. 48V) the voltage is
reduced slowly to the set value. The discharge time is determined by the output capacitor (120uF) and
the parallel resistor (82 k) and the connected load. During the discharge AuxDC is in an Overload
state. As long as overload is indicated the output voltage has not yet reached the set value.

CMC256: AUX DC
AuxDC Overload
Due to the high dynamic range of AuxDC (0 .. 264 V) at very small voltages (<4 V) it may happen that
a slight but lasting steady-state deviation occurs. Even if the deviation lays within the specification this
phenomena may cause an overload.
In the next software release the overload functionality of AuxDC will be improved.
