A HAUNTED CHRISTMAS

preface
Amanda has been invited to stay for christmas with her grandmother and
mum, little did she know what ghostly things would be in store for her, at the
big old house, and truth would arise from the findings, that would eventually
be unearthed.

Slamming the door to my flat, it had been a tiring day, costumer complaints
buzzing around in my head, left me drained. Haning my coat on the hook in the
hall still not completely fixed, picking up my mail i headed for the kitchen.
Kicking my shoes off, filling the kettle and switching it on, i proceeded to
make a very needed hot cup of chocolate.
Relaxing on the sofa opening my mail, astonished to hear from my
grandmother. Last timei saw her was at my grandfathers funeral two months
ago, didnt say much to her, as gran was so upset, just hugged and gave my
condolences, i was never that close to both of them, maybe it was because my
grandmother was a stout victorian woman, where children were seen but not
heard.

Reading the letter astonishment lept over me, my grandmother wanted

me to stay for the christmas period. My hand dropped down as i sipped my hot
chocolate, could not believe that for the first time ever i was offered an
invitation to stay. Thinking to myself, wondering whether it was because she
was all alone, after grandad departing.

The phone rang, waking me from my thoughts, hello i said, hi Amanda,

its mum, oh hi, have you heard from your grandmother? anxiety in my
mothers voice. Well yes in fact i received a letter from grandma today, asking
me to stay for christmas. Yes she has asked me to, i am going to visit her, you
never know, she may not be with us next year. Yes, thinking to myself, oh what
the hell, okay mum i will take up the invite, who thats wonderful, shall i tell
her your coming to stay for the festive period, i am going to give her a bell
now, yes sure that would be great. See you there mum, alright sweet heart safe
journey. With that i hung up the phone.

Lying on the sofa exhausted, it had been a hard day, dozing into a sleep, i
woke up with a start, i had been out for about an hour. Gradually sitting up,
still reeling from the days events, i showered and dressed in my pyjamas,
eating a microwave meal, too exhausted to cook tonight, decided to have an
early night.

It was thursday, and the weekend would see me travel to my grandmas,

the weather was cold and frosty, so glad thinking to myself that the snow had
not fallen, so it should be safe to travel. Friday came and packing my case for
the two weeks, my boss was not happy about me going on leave at christmas
time, but by not taking too many holidays, i was owed. Reluctantly they gave
me my free time.

Saturday morning arrived, eating breakfast, wondering if i was doing the

right thing, would this be a joyous occasion? or a dismal christmas, half
emptiedly, i made sure the flat was tidy and safe, locking the door and placing
my suitcase in the boot, i drove the two hour stretch to my grandmothers. So
many thoughts going around in my head.

Grandmas house was an old five bedroomed victorian styled home, in

latter years parts of the house were starting to get into disrepair, my mother
trying to persuade my gran to move to a smaller place. But she always refused,
my mother argued no more. Approaching the front door, parking the car,
looking up at the house, nothing had changed. Ringing the doorbell, my mother
opened the door, darling she said with a smile giving me a hug, hi mum, gran
stood in the doorway of the lounge. Hi gran, hello Amanda, have a good
journey up?yes thanks replying with a smile. Walking over to where she stood
hugging the frail old lady, you still look young, get away with you, the old lady
said, we both laughed, Ill just get my suitcase out of the car. Once in the
house, my grandmother spoke, come on lets get you settled, then well have
dinner.

It has been such a long time since i have been here, Amanda said, too
long gran replied, why do you stay in such a big old house gran? it must cost a
fortune to heat. Memories the old lady said just memories.

Here is your room, grans hand pointing me the direction into a room
where you could tell had not been used. Everything in place, the room has been

aired, but the furniture is old polished and cleaned though, gran pointing all around the
room. It is fine gran, i will leave you to get settled, dinner in half an hour and with that the
old lady left Amanda to unpack. See you in five Amandas mum said following her mum to
the dining room for a sherry.

They both sipped there sherry, chatting about old times when
Amanda entered the room, hi love her mum smiled wine, as she held the glass
of white wine towards Amanda. Thanks i could do with a drink, hows work
her mum asked, busy her daughter replied, and how are you gran?a long time
no see, Amanda smiled at her gran, i keep myself busy, but at 80 years old feel
a bit tired now and then.

You look great gran Amanda said smiling, and with that her gran smiling
back said thank you now lets eat. Chatting about times gone by the meal went
past quite pleasently, lets make our way to the living room, Amandas gran
with her arm outstretched towards the door, urging them to make themselves
more comfortable in the living room.

Amanda shuddered with cold, have you got the central heating on gran it
feels chilly in here, well yes dear, let me turn up the thermostat, there it is on
25 degrees. Amandas breath could be seen in the air for a few moments, she
looked astonished, then the room became warm. The grandmother just smiled.

They sat till the early hours of the morning, drinking a sherry or two and
talking, a pleasent evening was had by all, well Amanda said yawning, im
bushed, putting down her empty wine glass on the coffee table, Amanda arose
from the sofa and said im off to bed now, okay her mum said, kissing them

both on the forehead, Amanda bid them both goodnight and made her way to
her bedroom.
Changing into her nightwear grabbed the washbag with her toothbrush and
toiletries, made her way along the hall which felt cold now, to the bathroom,
cleaning her teeth, she looked around the bathroom, old fittings a dripping tap,
the house did shows signs of wear, reaching for her towel, Amanda finished up
and promptly made her way back to her bedroom, climbing into bed it did not
take long to fall asleep, the pillow felt soft and comforting.
Sun shone, Amanda looked at the clock it was 10am, must have been
exhausted thinking to herself, feeling refreshed,,Amanda got dressed and made
her way to the kitchen, hearing voices as she entered her mum and gran were
sat drinking coffee chatting. Well good morning, we let you sleep in you must
have been very tired, i was, Manada replied, feel great now though, Pouring
herself a coffee, she reached for the cereals and promptly ate breakfast.
Well what is on the agenda for today? Amanda asked looking at the two
women in a quizzical fashion. What would you like to do Amanda? her gran
asked, i dont mind just chilling, well chill then her gran spoke smiling. The
one thing that i would like us to get a bit later when you have relaxed a while is
a christmas tree, and the decorations from the attic. Yes that would be great
Amanda said, i want the house to look bright and cheery, her gran said, it will
look lovely mum, Amandas mum said.
Two days later, Amanda went with her mum and bought the christmas
tree, not a small one, must have stood 10 feet tall, her grandmother tols them to
be sure that the tree had to be large. Mum, Amanda said, yes, her mum replied,
why is it that gran wants to decorate the house for christmas after all theses
years of not being interested. Maybe it is because she thinks her time might be
coming to an end, and just wants it to be a joyous occasion, i really do not
know. Now come on lets get this tree home.
Once back at the house, Amanda helped her mum carry the tree into the
living room, phew, Amanda cried and flopped onto the sofa, her grandmother
cried with glee, ohh the tree is wonderful. Lets get the decorations from the
attic. Amandas mum and herself made there way upto the attic, and proceeded
to move the decorations to the living room. Oh it is cold up here, Amanda
shivered rubbing her arms, why gran has never moved to a smaller place i will
never know. It is probably the memories and she is used to the place, i really do
not know how she thinks.
Ready a voice shouted from the living room, oh look at these your mother
made as a child, pulling a small glitter christmas tree made from card to hang
on the tree. Amanda and her mother made there way to the living room, gosh
mum Amandas mother said, did not realise you kept all these. I keep
everything. Amandas gran replied, everything. Come on lets decorate the tree.
It took a couple of hours to sort the decorations and place them on the
tree, shut the curtains, Amandas gran cried, she was just like a child, with one
switch the tree lit up the room. Fabulous Amanda gasped, it is beautiful mum,

Amandas mum said to her own mother. This is going to be the best ever
christmas Amandas gran said smiling. Lets have a sherry, the three sat sipping
there sherries and laughing. Once more the house was filled with joy.
Amandas gran stood up, i do feel a little tired, i am going for a lie down,
okay mum. Amandas mum turned towards her daughter and said i think i will
go and freshen up, and make sure mums alright. Okay Amanda replied, she sat
alone admiring the tree. The air turned cold, her breath could be seen in the air,
a bauble fell, it bounced along the floor towards Amanda. Picking it up she
placed it back on the tree, shivering, turning away Amanda heard a thump the
bauble fell once again and rolled along the floor. Amanda shivered, she felt
spooked. The room felt icy cold, placing the bauble back on the tree, and
standing still, the christmas tree lights flickered, and as if nothing had
happened the icy feeling left the room. She felt spooked, her gran stood in the
doorway as Amanda turned to walk out of the living room, smiling, everything
alright dear? her gran spoke. Oh yes fine, is the heating on gran? it seemed to
go so cold, well yes of course , after all it is december.
The old lady smiled to herself, a strange thing just happened, oh yes, the
old ladys interest gained, as Amanda spoke, a bauble fell from the tree not
once but twicw and the room felt so cold, oh that is probably Daphne, who?
Amanda looked intrigued, looking at her gran. I believe the house is haunted
by a little girl and her mother Rose, some say i am crazy.
Please go on, Amandas interest grew more. They lived here long ago and died
in this house. But do not worry, you will not come to any harm, Daphne just
wants to play, Amandas gran smiled, she has shown herself to you dear in
spirit. Amanda was not sure whether she wanted to play with a ghost, feeling
spooked Amanda retired to her room.
She slept for about an hour, when her mother entered the room, i did
look in on you before but you were sound asleep, sitting on the edge of the bed,
sweeping her daughters hair from her brow. Mum Amanda said, yes looking
inquisitively at her daughter, gran reckons the house is haunted. Her mum
smiled, my mother been telling ghost stories again. Well no, it is just that
something strange happened earlier on and sometimes it is so cold. What do
you think? i do not know, do you think there is a ghost? looking at her mother.
I have never seen any if that is what you mean.
I am going to shower and change mum, so i will see you for dinner, okay
Amanda as her mother stood up, and straightening herself approached the
door, see you for dinner. Amanda showered, feeling refreshed entered the
bedroom which was dimly lit. Noticing her hair brush on the dressing stool,
picking it up and placing it on the dressing table, she dressed. Reaching for her
hair brush it was back on her stool, the air surrounded her so cold.
Frozen with fright, slowly bending down, reaching for the brush, her
eyes scanning the room, fumbling to pick it up the hair brush moved to the
edge of the stool and tumbled to the floor, a laughter sounded of a child a little
girl.

The room became warmer, Amanda knew the ghost had gone, running to
the light switch on the wall flicking it on Amanda looked around her bedroom,
everything seemed normal. She let out a big sigh of relief. Dressing she
proceeded to where the others were in the dining room. Wine her mother
approached with a glass filled with white, Amanda took the drink her hand
shaking and drank. You alright love, her gran said. Oh yyyes gran. Amandas
gran smiled to herself, she knew her grand daughter had, had an experience.
Everything was in place this was going to be a truly wonderful christmas. The
three retired to the lounge, chatting and laughing.
Mum would you sleep with me tonight, as it is a double bed, well why?
looking puzzled, Amanda looked at her mum, please, of course, her gran piped
up, ghosts can not harm you, you know smiling at her grand daughter. Oh
actually mum, its alright, i will be okay on my own, you sure i am here for
you, no its fineAmanda said, the three talking and drinking till the small hours
of the morning.
Waking the next morning with a slight hangover, Amanda made her way
down towards the kitchen, smelling the coffee, so welcoming, her mother
poored a cup and handed it to Amanda, how is the head? she asked smiling, not
to bad a bit fuzzy. Looking out of the kitchen window snow was starting to fall,
quite heavily, oh looks like it will bea white christmas after all, Amanda said
smiling, wonderful it will make it feel even more christmassy.
Only one week to go her mum said almost talking to herself, yes
Amanda said, well i am going to get dressed, sipping her coffee Amanda left
her mum looking out through the window at the snow, a blizzard was starting
to fall. Amanda made her way back to her bedroom, approaching the stairs a
coloured ball bounced down, she screamed dropping her coffee cup.
Amandas mum came running into the hall, you alright? oh yes i just
tripped, the lounge door slowly opened, Amandas gran seemed to be talking to
someone. Mum Amandas mum spoke, who are you talking to? looking around
the room, oh no one Amandas grandmother said. Looking at the lounge floor a
row of baubles lay on the floor, did you do this? mum, no i did not they were
here when i came into the lounge.
Amandas mum grabbed her daughter and almost dragged her into the
hall, do you think she is going senile? i do not know mum, maybe, a door
slammed upstairs, the two women looked up, probably the wind Amanda said,
they both nodded.
i will go and sit with your gran, okay Amanda said, im going to get
dressed. Amanda became wary of the strange things going on in the house,
reaching the top of the stairs, she could feel a cold breeze, at the end of the hall
was a small window, the curtains seemed to be moving. Amanda took a deep
breath, and slowly crept towards the window gulping in fear. Slowly
approaching a mist formed at the end of the landing, she stopped and watched
a figure of a woman appear, the apparition raced towards her screaming,
passing through Amandas body then disappearing.

Trembling Amanda seemed rooted to where she stood, the cold air
leaving and warmth returned, she knew it was over. Rushing to her bedroom
slamming the door Amanda slumped on the floor beside her bed, catching her
breath. The house really was haunted.
Her grandmother entered Amandas bedroom, are you alright? she asked
in her frail voice, gran, is this house haunted?, why do you say that? looking
quizzically at the girl hunched up on the bedroom floor. I am sure i just saw an
apparition of a woman. walking slowly over to where Amanda sat, her
grandmother perched herself on the edge of the bed. Yes dear i do believe this
house is haunted by a mother and child. The woman is young i would say in
her 20s and the child about eight years old. She does seem to want to protect
her little girl, when did they die? looking up at her gran, eagerly wanting an
answer. i feel around 1920, but there is no record, it is just that i have seen the
ghostly apparition quite clearly of the child, and i could tell by the way she is
dressed.
At that Amandas make up bag flew off the dressing table landing by her
feet, Amandas gran turned and said, who is there, is that you Rose? a ghostly
face appeared in the dressing table mirror of a young woman. The two women
stared at the figure, then it faded. Amanda spoke almost in a whisper, it is sure
going to be a lively christmas, yes, her gran bent down to Amanda, since you
have arrived, things have become more lively. They will not harm me will they
gran? looking worried she asked, well i have never been harmed, a little
scratched maybe. Amanda looked shocked.
Please stay for christmas, dont go home, you will be safe. Okay i will
see how things go. Picking up her make up bag, Amanda stood up and placed it
back on the dressing table. Iwill dress now, i will meet you downstairs, okay,
her gran left the room. Amanda quickly dressed amd met her mum and gran
downstairs, hearing voices from the lounge, Amanda joined them.
Her mother looked and smiled at her daughter, you knew Amanda said
about the house being haunted, yes, do you still want to stay? you do not have
to. Just see how things go Amanda said to her mum, the tree shook, all three
women stopped talking and stared, at the brightly lit christmas tree. It has
stopped her gran said calming everyone with her hand outstretched, the room
turned icy cold, no it has not Amanda said standing up, her hair stood on end as
if someone was running there fingers through it, Amanda quickly moved
shocked and frightened, whos there, the three women silent looking around
the room the apparition floated around Amanda and vanished through the wall.
The coldness left, shes gone her gran spoke Does seem as though the ghosts
are drawn to you dear her gran said, looking at her grand daughter.
Mum would you move in with me, of course if it makes you feel
happier, yes it would make me feel a bit better. It was 5 days till christmas eve,
would Amanda last in this haunted house. Breaking into her thoughts, her mum
offered to make lunch, then i will move my things in with you, Amanda halve
smiled, okay mum, thinking it had been a long time since she had spent

anytime with her mum, living on her own in her apartment for three years now.
But she knew that she was terrified to sleep alone whilst in this house.
The rest of the day passed quietly, Amanda sat alone in the living room
admiring the tree, once again the air turned cold, the christmas tree lights
flickered, a coloured ball rolled from behind the tree, the same one on the
staircase, the dish of sweets slid along the coffee table. Sat froze to the spot
Amanda watched as the ghostly figure of a little girl materialised in the room,
she smiled at Amanda then disappeared. Her mother entered the room, oh its
cold in here, checking the radiator, red hot, baubles fell from the tree in front of
Amandas mum, they seem to float in mid air then drop. This was the first
ghostly experience Amandas mum had experienced. She stood aghast, is that
the little girl, Amandas mum pointed towards the tree, yes itis mum.
Well i know now how you feel, spooky, the two women sat on the sofa
gazing around the room, waitnig to see if anything else would occur, but
warmth surrounded them. The ghost has gone for now.
After the evening meal the three women sat chatting in the lonuge, when
thuds were heard from upstairs, they looked up. Lets go and investigate,
Amandas mum said, i wll come with you Amanda said, making there way
upsatairs they stopped and listened, it came from a room at the end of the hall.
Openeing the door, it was the old nursery, a small stool was hammering up and
down as though it were being picked up, but there was no one there. The door
slammed shut, toys were thrown around the room, the two crouched down. The
large apparition formed in front of them of the woman shielding her ghostly
child as though she were protecting her. Amanda called out to the womans
ghost, we mean you no harm, please. The room went still, the two cautiously
gazed around as they moved there arms from there faces they were shielding.
Everything was still, do you know Amanda i think the womans ghost is
protecting the little girl, maybe she thought we were going to harm her. How
the hell do you harm a ghost? the ghost has done more harm then the bloody
living. Amanda said to her mum. Looking around the room at the old toys,
wallpaper hanging off, it had not been touched for years, why the hell doesnt
gran get out of this old house, she is too old to stay here alone mum.
I know, just because it is haunted, does not mean you have to stay. What
is it Amanda said, ghost company. Amandas mum laughed. Im going to bed
mum, i will follow, just say goodnight to your gran, okay.
The two women lay in the double bed, thanks for staying with me mum,
its okay i am a bit spooked myself. Do you think this dead woman and her
child are buried here?, might be, they obviously are not at peace.
They both fell asleep, in the early hours of the morning Amanda awoke,
icy cold the room felt, the bed clothes slipped down and it felt as though
someone had climbed into bed along side her, the apparition of a child became
very clear, dark hair, a pretty face, the ghost smiled at Amanda then vanished.
Amanda lay froze, slowly pulling the bedclothes she became to
frightened to scream, looking at her mum lying bedside her asleep, Amanda lay

awake for at least two hours, waiting for something else to happen, on guard,
she must have dozed off, before she knew it was morning.
The room felt cold, but this time it was no ghost but the radiator beside
her bed was not on. Amanda found this unuasual, her mum stirred, oh good
morning, sleep well love? no i did not, why? didnt you see the ghost, no what
happened, oh mum it actually climbed into bed with me, oh did it? which one?
Amanda looked at her mum halve smiling, it is no laughing matter mother, i
was terrified. It was the little girl, oh never, her mum replied, maybe she was
looking for comfort. Well i wish she would look somewhere else.
You know Amanda, if you want to go home feel free love. No mom i am
going to try and find out why these ghosts have not passed over. The two got
dressed and went downstairs, ill check the furnace Amandas mother said, ill
get the coffee going, good idea, they both shivered and quickly went about
there duties.
When Amandas mother came into the kitchen, her daughter asked, is the
furnace broken? no, it is not, came back the reply, seeming surprised, it had
been turned off. Amanda handed a mug of hot coffee to her mum, and i have
made gran some tea, oh thanks just what i needed, ill go and check on your
grandmother and take her tea..
Making her way to her mothers bedroom, peeking around the door,
mum she whispered quietly, you awake?. Oh Charlotte, i am not feeling very
good today, think i have come down with a cold or flu, i will stay in bed for a
while. I have brought you some hot tea, lovely, how is Amanda? Charloote
sniggered, the ghost got into bed with her last night, i never saw a thing. You
should not laugh, but Amandas gran did smile. Poor child she must be
frightened halve out of her wits. I told her she could go home, but Amanda has
decided to stay. I knew she would Charlottes mum said, she is a trooper.
Amanda placed her empty mug on the table and it slid on its own to the
other side, sitting still, then saying, show yourself, a little girls laugh was
heard then faded. Sitting at the table, Amanda looked through the kitchen
window at the snow falling heavily, even if she could go home the weather was
too bad, it was if the house did not want her to go.
Her mother entered the kitchen, hows gran? looking up at her mum, she
has come down with a bit of a cold so has decided to stay in bed for a while
and rest. Ill pop up and see her later, yes Amandas mum said, she will like
that. What are your plans for today Amanda? oh just going to relax, might find
a book to read. Yes your gran has many in the dining room on the dresser.
Amanda made her way to where the books were kept, looking through to
see if she could find a suitable story, the family photo album were amongst
them, picking it up and sitting at the dining table, she looked through, photos
of gran and grandad from many years ago, horse drawn carriages, it was
interesting to see things which had disappeared from modern day. The fashion
of that day, gran certainly had been a beauty.

Thump, Amanda looked behind her, a book had fallen of the shelf or
thrown, picking it up a piece of paper fell out. Taking it carefully as it was very
old and could be a valuable document, Amanda opened the folded paper, a
letter, of some sort, she began reading, it was a love letter, not signed. Folding
it carefully Amanda placed the letter back in the book. Getting up from her
chair she replaced the fallen book and took the one book she had picked into
the lounge. Settling on the sofa she began to read.
Just going to check on your grandmother, my mum shouted making her
way to where my grans bedroom was. Her cold was at its worst and she took
to her bed, how are you mum? i feel awful the old lady replied. At my age i do
have to be careful of infections, i know mum, where do you think you caught
this cold? really i do not know. Would you like me to get you anything? no i
do not feel hungry, ill just rest. See you later and with that Amandas mother
left the room, making her way to the lounge. Amanda sat curled up reading.
Hows gran? feeling rough came the reply, i have left her to rest. I am going
out shopping today for christmas, would you like to come Amanda. Yes mum
laying down the book ill just get my coat.
Amanda wrapped up warm and made her way to the car. It was freezing,
but she thought maybe a break from the house and fresh air would clear her
mind. Her mum got into the car and they drove off slowly towards the
shopping mall. Roads were treacherous, and Amandas mum was glad that her
daughter had decided to accompany her in case she got stuck in the snow.
Pulling up outside the supermarket it was fairly busy. They entered the store,
christmas music played and the atmosphere felt jolly. Amanda enjoyed seeing
all the christmas products on offer, they filled the trolley with food and drink. I
will not be shopping again till after christmas, probably when i return home,
same here her daughter replied. The two hours away from the house felt good
and uplifting. Filling the car with all the goods they had bought, slowly driving
back to the house.
Glad you decided to stay Amanda for christmas, once more she said.
That house makes me feel depressed mum, her daughter looked at her, i do not
knoe how much more i can take with supernatural happenings. Are they real?
or i am just in a nightmare. How the hell does gran stay there? i believe her
mum replied, that the ghosts have something to do with my mum, but i can not
figure out what it is. Amanda did not speak anymore just sat in thought till they
reached home. She felt refreshed. Packing away the groceries, the two women
sat in the kitchen talking over hot coffee laced with a tia maria, the festivities
had slowly begun. They laughed and chatted.
Ill go and check on gran Amanda said. Okay her mum replied, i ll take
some tea and biscuits, she might want something to eat and drink. Amanda
made her way to her grandmothers room with the tray, and a bottle of whisky,
approaching her bed the frail old lady turned, welcoming her gran daughter.
Thought you might like a hot toddy, that would be lovely, pouring a sip of
whisky in the tea. Me and mum have just come back from the store and done

the christmas shopping, oh good, the old lady sat sipping her tea, how is the
weather? well it is not snowing but freezing cold. And how are you? the old
lady looking at Amanda. Okay gran, thanks for asking. You coming
downstairs? looking at her gran in bed, not today love, but i do fancy some
soup, oh good. Ill get you some.
Reaching the top of the stairs the air turned cold again, Amanda felt a
shove in her back, a ball bounced down the stairs, losing her balance she
quickly grabbed the bannister saving herself, out the corner of her eye was an
apparition of a woman vanishing through the wall. Amanda sat on the stairs,
she felt as though she were in danger for the first time and did not like this
feeling. Am i doing the right thing by staying here for christmas, thinking to
herself. Making her way to the kitchen, Amanda proceeded to warm some
soup, whose that for> her mum said, gran Amanda replied, she fancies
something to eat, that is good, hopefully it is the start of her recuperating.
Once Amanda had seen to her gran she proceeded to the attic. There
were boxes of things, and carefully Amanda searched, hopefully for an answer,
Books, papers, photos, then finally a letter. A love letter from her gran did not
say who too, it started with my love, but signed by her. Sat deep in thought, the
air turned cold, Amanda shivered as though someone had walked over her
grave, the little girls ghost appeared before her, she smiled for a second
reached her hand out towards Amanda, then vanished. Amanda sat froze, well
at least she did not try to kill me she thought, but the little girls ghost did seem
friendlier than the womans ghost that resided here.
Amanda took the letter she had found and kept it to herself, her find a
secret for now, till she could figure out exactly who gran had written the letter
to. The rest of the day passed peacefully. It was beginning to feel a little like
christmas. Two days to go till christmas eve, Amanda thought as she lay on her
bed, the air once again turned cold, the bedclothes slid from her body, a little
childs laugh could be heard, a ball appeared rolling along the floor to where
Amanda lay, grabbing the ball she rolled it back, she played with the ghost for
ten minutes, the ball rolling back and forward, then it stopped. Amandas
mother entered the bedroom, im going to hit the deck, hows gran? Amanda
asked. She is sleeping but i feel the worst of the cold has past. Climbing into
bed her mum turned off the light and they both retired for the night.
The next morning Amandas gran was feeling a lot better, looking at the
clock the time said 9.45am. Lifting the receiver of the telephone, she
proceeded to call a lady named, Lucy Hayes, who was a medium. Hello, you
are mrs Hayes, yes, what can i do for you, she sounded very nice the old lady
thought to herself. I would like to book you for a seance on christmas eve, That
would be fine Lucy replied but it will be a double fee. No problem the old lady
replying, around 7pm then. Yes Lucy said see you then. The old lady placing
the receiver chuckled to herself, oh time to get up. Slowly getting out of bed
she dressed and made her way downstairs to where the others sat in the kitchen
talking.

Oh mum your up, how are you feeling, a lot better, as she slowly made
her way to a chair, a cup of tea would be nice, smiling. Amandas mum poured
the tea, would you like anything to eat? oh just some toast. How are things
coming along for christmas? the old lady asked. We have all the food and
drink, oh good. Now on christmas eve at 7pm a medium is coming to do a
seance. I have booked her, she is well known and is supposed to be very good.
The two women looked at each other, well Amanda said, i cant wait it will
certainly be interesting. She arose and left the kitchen. Mum do you think this
is a good idea having this medium, waving her hand and rolling her eyes, i do
feel you should sell this place, it is much too big for you. I will not sell the old
lady made it clear and was adamant.

She arose from her seat, i am going into the lounge, and with that left her
daughter in the kitchen, clearing away the breakfast things, she started to
prepare lunch and get her christmas food in order ready for the big day. An
hour later walking past the lounge where her mum sat she could hear talking,
peering through the crack in the door, she quietly watched her mum, it was as
though she was talking to someone and to her amazement, a ghostly apparition
sat in the chair opposite of a woman. I listened intently, Now you must stop
terrifying my grand daughter, she is not here to harm you. The ghost of a
woman seemed to be conversing with my mum. Accidently making a noise my
mum looked at the door and the ghost vanished.
I made out that I had just arrived, the room was freezing, my mum looked at
me sheepishly, how long have you been standing outside the door. Long
enough mum. Now what is exactly going on in this house, my daughter is
terrified. Wait for the sance all will be revealed.
Sitting looking at my mother, all thoughts raced through my head, what was
she up to. A bauble raised itself in mid air and was carefully placed on the
floor, now Daphne behave, my grandmother laughed. Smiling to myself, I
could not wait for christmas eve, becoming more intrigued each passing hour,
or was my mother going over the edge, unexplainable things were happening,
things I had no explanation for.
Christmas eve arrived, Amanda and myself were excited but cautious, what
would happen with this medium. Sitting in the kitchen I asked would they
like a buffet or cooked dinner, my mother piped up a dinner will suffice.
The old lady stood up, picking up her walking cane slowly making her way
out of the kitchen. Amanda`s mother sighed, you okay with tonight? With
this medium coming, you do not have to stay you know. Honestly mom I
am fine, Amanda said smiling, it will be alright.
After the three had eaten, the dinner plates cleared away, they waited
impatiently for the medium to arrive. A knock came at the door, the doorbell rang
loud and seemed to echo through the house. Amanda`s gran made her way to the door
and welcomed Lucy the medium, come into the dining room we are all waiting. Lucy
making her way into the room beckoned everyone to sit around the table and hold
hands. She blessed the sance then began. Cndles were lit in the room and Lucy
called out is anyone there.

Lucy seemed to go into a trance, the room turned cold candles went out, two
mists formed, Amanda held her mum`s hand so tight, holding her breath watched as
two figures appeared. Who are you? The medium asked, i`m Daphne, and I am 8, I`m
Rose her mum, the ghostly apparitions became clear, the old lady with tears in her
eyes my daughter and grandchild, they turned to her, Amanda and her mum were
startled at what they heard. The medium asked, why do you stay in this house? We
are waiting, Rose replied and with that they disappeared. Everyone looked round
Amanda astonished, what are they waiting for? I do not know the old lady replied.
The medium was pleased the sance had gone well. Are you all happy with your
findings tonight. Yes was the reply.
Seeing the medium out Amanda`s mum asked her mother to explain, let us go
into the lounge, all seated Amanda`s gran began, I was happily married to your
grandfather, but he was away so often working. You must remember I was a young
girl, we were having some renovations done on the house, and the workman was so
handsome, he was kind and chatted to me. Being left alone so much, well one thing
led to another and I had an affair. Your father came home soon after and I made sure
he made love to me, soon I found out I was pregnant. That was when Rose was born,
he never knew, you did not come along for another seven years. Rose married and
had a little girl Daphne. They both died of tuberculosis, you must remember in those
days we did not have the hospital facilities like today.
Rose moved away I did not see her much, and for some reason her ghost
remains in this house. Everyone sat in silence sipping there drink, I am glad this
secret is out in the open, Amanda`s gran said. At long last. Well I am going to retire, it
has been an exhausting evening. The old lady slowly made her way to her bedroom.
Amanda and her mum helped, they both decided to go to bed, maybe not so
frightened as they had been.
Christmas morning came, Amanda got up slipped on her dressing gown and
made her way to her grandmother`s bedroom, walking over she took her gran`s hand
which had slipped down it was cold. Mum she screamed, Amanda`s mother ran to
where Amanda stood, it`s gran, going over to where she lay and checking her pulse,
she`s gone Amanda, must have passed away in the night, they both felt tears run
down there cheeks. I will have to telephone her doctor, wiping away the tears with
her hand. Oh mum I love you. Then the air started to go cold, the ghosts of Rose and
Daphne appeared and with them was gran, she smiled, a light at the door, all three
made there way to the light and disappeared. Warmth returned to the room and the
house felt peaceful.
After the funeral Amanda returned home back to the city, her mother put the
house on the market and sold it to a developer his name was Harry Piercon&sons, the
son of the man she had an affair with all those years ago.
THE END

Dark Despair.
Preface.

My life was good, everything a woman could wish for i had. A

lovely husband, very successful and good to me, two lovely
children a boy and girl. Jenny aged 5 and Luke 7. In my
twenties my husband and i had built a beautiful home. Until
horror and terror struck, coming face to face with death. My
life would never be the same again.

chapter one.
Watching the children playing in there paddling pool,
splashing each other, it was a joyful afternoon. Hot and sunny,
as it had been for many weeks, laughing together, i smiled. The
grass brown and sunbaked, would it ever recover, a neighbour
assured me as soon as it rains the green would return.
Approaching the children, picking up the hose pipe i turned it
on drenching the two of them, screaming with joy, running
around the garden, laughing with joy.

Filling the paddling, then watering the garden, trying to save

my plants, some annuals had already died from the heat.
Placing the hose down, anyone for ice creams, the children
cried yes please. Sitting on the terrace in a shady spot we ate
our ices. Schools had been shut for the afternoon because of
the heat. In some parts of the city water shortages were in
place. Watching the children eating the ice creams suntanned,
smiling to myself, wasn`t life perfect.

Anyone home, a voice called as my thoughts were interrupted,

it was geoffrey my husband, out here in the garden calling to
him. Fancy an ice pop, yes please, placing his brief case down
and slumping into the patio chair. Your early today Geoff, no
water at the office, we are only allowed two hours a day now,ah
he grunted i do wish this heat would end.

It had been at least two months since we had any rain, wishing
to myself that the weather would change, i never knew sunny
days could be so exhausting.
I`ll start the evening meal, making my way into the kitchen,
preparing the food, watching geoffrey through the kitchen
window playing with the children, smiling to myself, as he
chased the children with the hose soaking the two of them, the
laughed in joyous delight.
Foods ready, come and eat, sitting outside on the patio, the
perfume from the flowers filled the air. A slightly little cooler,
but so humid and still. Geoffrey sighed, that was delicious.
Everyone had enough to eat, the children replying yes thanks.
Better put your pyjamas on, you have school early tomorrow, i
will come and read you a bedtime story.
Kissing Geoffrey, just go and read the children there bedtime
story i`m exhausted, okay Laura, and with that leaving
Geoffrey in front of the television. Well you two, picking up a
book, i`m hot complained Jenny, let me get the cooler fan,
putting it on, that better, the children smiled and nodded yes.
Settling in there beds i continued to read the bedtime story, 20
minutes passed the children`s eyes closing. placing the book
quietly on the chest of drawers, tip toeing out of there room.
Quietly making my way downstairs to the living room.
Geoffrey had fallen asleep in front of the television, smiling i
did not disturb him, making my way to the garden, tidying the
childrens toys, emptying the paddling pool, watering the
hanging baskets, enjoying the aroma from the flowers, i felt
content.

Pouring myself a glass of wine, and getting a cold beer for

Geoffrey proceeding to the living room, my husband had
awoken, placing the beer in his hand, shall we sit on the patio,
Geoffrey nodded switching off the tv set proceeded to where

the sunlounger seem to say come here, watching the sunset

was awesome, oranges, yellows, reds filled the sky.
The office will probably shut early tomorrow, because of the
water supply. The situation is getting desperate, be glad when
it rains, Laura said, i do like the sun, but this heat, yes,
Geoffrey commented thinking to himself. Sitting in the garden
till ten, enjoying the warm evening sun, feeling tired Geoffrey
and Laura, locked the house and retired.
6am the alarm sounded, another hot day dawned, Laura
arising, getting dressed, proceeding to the kitchen, making the
coffee and getting breakfast ready, the kids lunch boxes had to
be filled. School started at 7.30am and finished 12 noon, until
the heat had broken.
Waking the children at 6.45am, Geoffrey sipping his coffee and
eating breakfast when Laura re-appeared in the kitchen with
the children, helping them with there school uniform. Geoffrey
kissed Laura see you later, have a good one, Laura said and
with that Geoffrey drove off.
Ready kids, to the car, got everything, Laura reversing down
the driveway, proceeded to take the children to school. The
temperature already in the 80 degrees, parking a little away
from the school. Walking the children towards the school
gates, some parents were returning to there cars with there
children, confused, wondering what was happening. As i
approached the gates the headmistress smiled and came
towards me, hello Laura, and how are you all today, isn`t this
heat just unbearable, yes i do agree, be glad to see some rain
now, the headmistress smiled, i am sorry but the school is
shut, there is no water. The children jumped up and down with
glee, laughing, well someone is happy, we both chuckled. Keep
a listen on the local radio, they will keep you updated. Smiling,

okay, turning and making our way back to the car, the children
laughing joyously, no school hurrah.
Returning home, put your play clothes on, what do you want to
do, can we just watch television, sure. Making my way to the
kitchen, pouring a coffee, sipping and having a quiet moment
to myself.
Tidying the crockery, Geoffrey`s car pulled up, making his way
into the kitchen where Laura stood, no water he said. We are
going to be paid but for how long i do not know. Well just get
changed into something cooler, he looked in the living room at
the children. The school is shut, has no water either.
The cooling fans were on in the living room as everyone
relaxed in the cool air, which felt good coming from them, just
hoped the situation would improve soon.
Chapter two
Returning from the mall with my groceries, pulling up the
drive, getting out of the car and making my way to the kitchen
door, i called, Geoff give us a hand, sure my husband helping
me with the shopping into the kitchen. How was the
supermarket? well stocked, not to bad, water is limited and
some shelves were empty. I have managed to get everything we
need.
Packing away the groceries a newsflash came over on the
television which sat in the corner of the kitchen. Heavy storms
and tornado watch in your area. Moving in from the south
west, please be aware, a ninty per cent chance of tornadoes.
The sun had not been as bright today, more humid and clouds
were forming, well the rain would be appreciated, thinking to
myself, as the sweat dripped from my brow. The morning
moved on and dark clouds in the distance were starting to
form. Geoffrey do you think we should put all the kids toys and

patio furniture in the garage, geoff looking out of the kitchen

window nodded, i will put everything away, just as a
percuasion.
Preparing a snack for lunch, Laura noticed the skies were
black, Jenny asked if she could play outside, not at the moment
a storm is moving in. Fork lighting could be seen afar. Loud
thunder claps, the children ran to there mother screaming, it is
alright, Laura trying to reassure them, just the fairies having a
tea party.
Geoffrey turned to his wife, i`ll make sure everything is secure
upstairs, shutting the windows and doors, the shutters outside,
Geoffrey locked them whilst Laura tried to comfort the
children.
Hailstones the size of golf balls started to fall, Laura grabbed
food and drinking supplies, cushions, blankets, making her
way to the basement with the children. Come on lets go on an
adventure, smiling at the children, lets make a tent in the
basement. Settling the children in the make shift tent made out
of old sheets, it was quieter, the children were not so afraid,
and played with there toys.
Two tiny windows were all that lit the basement, putting the
electric light on, helped make it feel safer, the washing
machine and tumble dryer lived down here, and there were
some items that had been stored. Geoffrey made his way down
the basement stairs, closing the hatch. Look Laura, pointing at
the small window, a massive tornado had to be an f5
approaching the house, the noise from it was deafening, then a
groaning and grumbling, the basement floor moved.
Laura trying to comfort the children who had run to her
terrified, what is it, a tornado i think, huddled all together the
four of them crouched in the corner of the basement. The floor

and walls moving, god i think it is an earthquake my husband

whispered to me, trying not to alarm the children.

2 minutes it was all over, has it stopped? Laura said, think so

Geoff replied looking around. the two small basement windows
blacked out by rubble and dirt. Making his way to the
basement hatch Geoff could not move it. Sweat dripped from
his brow.

Laura come here, out of earshot of the children whispering to

his wife, we are blocked in. Horror and terror ran through
Laura`s body, god no. I can not move the hatch. Can we go to
our bedrooms now the children chanted. When we get the
hatch open, it is a little stuck, Laura trying to explain to the
frightened children.
Come on would you like a drink? getting some soft drinks from
the supplies Laura had managed to grab. The children sat and
drank, go and play in your tent, i`m hot said Luke, so am i
retorted Jenny. The sweat running off all there brows.
We are trapped Geoffrey said to Laura quietly, i have tried
everything. There will be rescuers, laura replied to her
husband, just be patient.
chapter three
Exhausted from the heat, everyone had fallen asleep, it had
been a few hours, Laura awoke to find Jenny shaking her arm,
i need the bathroom, come on Laura said, picking up one of the
old sheets, she made a make shift bathroom in one corner of
the bathroom. A few bits of rubble had made its way into the
basement, laura covered up the area which was used for the
toilet to help relieve the smell.

I`m hungry, little Luke said to his mum. Digging into the bag
of supplies Laura pulled out some crisps. Geoffrey spoke, be
careful with the supplies, they may have to last, Laura nodded.

Darkness, lights had gone out and the children screamed.

Alright Geoffrey said, fumbling his way through all the items
that were stored he found a couple of torches, there how is
that, better daddy, as light shone around the basement and
onto the childrens faces, little black marks, looked as though
they had been up a chimney. Geoffrey`s eyes filled with tears
as he watched the childrens faces scared, eating there crisps.
Making his way over to them, consoling the children, we will
get out, okay, nodding there heads.
Geoffrey sat by Laura as they all ate, the heat so oppressive in
the basement, and airflow very limited. How long can we last
down here? Geoffrey, Laura looking pensively at her husband.
A few days perhaps, don`t really know for sure.
Night must have fallen as the family fell asleep, awakening
Laura looking around, thinking i must be in a nightmare, but
reality was, they could not get out of the basement without
help. A few days passed, supplies were low, depression
overcame me. Geoffrey grabbing my shoulders, keep it
together Laura for the children`s sake. Tears filling my eyes,
we are going to die down here. No one has come to rescue us.
Tears streamed down my face, as Geoffrey held me.
Rocking me Geoffrey trying to reassure me, but knowing in his
heart time may run out, if help does not come soon. The
basement started to smell, and it became difficult to breath.
The children played a little. food and water were down to a
minimum. I sat in a daze. We must conserve our energy
Geoffrey said. Do you hear anything upstairs? Laura said, like
rescuers, bulldozers, Geoffrey sat still for a moment and
listened. No i do not.
A few hours sleep, Laura awoke shaking Luke, she could get no
response, Geoff i cannot get Luke to wake up. He went over to
his little boy, cradling him in his arms, picking up the tiny little

hand, his arm around the boys back, feeling for a pulse. The
pulse felt weak, looking at Laura nodding, he is okay, but we
have to get out. Shouting help, help, but his cries were not
heard.
Laura made her little Luke as comfortable as possible, her own
strength becoming weak. The water and soft drinks had run
out and everyone becoming weaker, would the basement
become there tomb.
Two more days had passed with no water and food the family
were weak with hunger and thirst. Laura thought this was it as
she lay by the children we are going to die down here, no one
had found them, in almost a fortnight. Darkness fell over them
as the family became engulfed with co2, little oxygen making
them feel drowsy, and sleep overcame. Was this the end for
Laura and her family, so young to die, maybe it was our
fortune. Not to make it to the outside world, please god Laura
said, why have you not spared the children.
Chapter 4

Gwen, Laura`s mother pulled up in her car, opposite side of

the street to where Laura`s house once stood. The road was
littered with bits of rubble, getting out of her car slowly,
looking over to where the house in all it`s glory once stood,
Gwen put her face in her hands, looking in disbelief. A pile of
rubble where once a house. Slowly walking towards Laura`s
property, Gwen searched for anything belonging to her
daughter.

Spotting items of furniture, smashed, clothing and toys. But no

sign of the family. Gwen looked around frantically, spotting a
rescuer, she made her way over to him. Please have you seen a
family from that house over there?, pointing to the rubble.

Try the church, there are a lot of survivors, the man said, okay.
Being in walking distance, Gwen made her way to the church,
people were mulling about outside, some with slight wounds.
Looking around there was no sign of her daughter, entering the
church, it was full of injured people and families who had
become homeless.
Gwen approached what seemed to be a nurse, i am looking for
my daughter and her family can you help? you are welcome to
look around. Thank you Gwen said and proceeded to search for
her daughter, nothing. The nurse asked any luck? as Gwen left
the church. i cannot see them, what will you do the nurse
asked? return to the place where her house once stood and see
if maybe they are in that area somewhere.
And with that Gwen made the way steadily through the
rubbled streets to her daughter`s house. Gwen`s eyes filled
with tears, a lump in her throat, fearing the worst. Making her
way steadily through bricks and dirt, kneeling and searching
thoroughly for anything any sign of the family.
Walking steadily over to the rescuer, please could you help me
look for my family. The rescuer looking at Gwen, be prepared
for the worst, he said softly.
Shouting and waving to another worker the bulldozer made his
way over to Laura`s ground, starting to move rubble dirt,
Gwen stood and watched, feeling so helpless. 4 hours had
passed, the rescuer put his hand up the machine stopped, there
is something here, Gwen came as near as she could, what is
that? pointing to a glass window.
Looking Gwen suddenly remembered the basement, quick look
Gwen said it is the downstairs basement, maybe there was
some hope. Gwen knelt down to the window and wiped the dirt
of with her hand as much as she could. Peering in, got a torch?
the rescuer passed a small torchlight, to Gwen. Shining it

through the window scrutininsing the basement carefully, she

could see a child`s arm and leg. There is some one down there,
turning to the rescuers, he grabbed the torch and peered
through the tiny window.

Gwen where is the opening? pointing to where the hatch was

the rescuers, worked as fast as they could to get to the family.
Gwen`s eyes filling with tears holding her face in her hand,
waiting for the basement hatch to be cleared, ambulances and
paramedics waiting patiently.

The basement door opened by a strong man. Steadily making

his way down the stairs, Gwen started to go over, when a hand
grabbed her arm. A paramedic spoke, wait just make sure they
are alright, they need to be brought up, that is if that is your
daughter.
The rescuer came out and beckoned the paramedic to come
over, there are four people. Going into the basement the air
seemed toxic, and the stench from human waste, became
overpowering. Checking the pulses, they were weak but alive.
One by one the family were brought out. Gwen could see the
family on stretchers, going over to the awaiting ambulance she
was told, very lucky, they are unconscious but alive, would you
like to come along in the ambulance? to the hospital.
I will follow in my car. Gwen felt tears of relief run down her
cheek, making her way to the car, she drove to the hospital.
thoughts running through her mind, if i had not bothered to
come when i did, they would probably have never been found.
At the hospital she made her self known at the reception and
was told to wait in the relatives room. There were a lot of
injured people and she knew it would be a long wait. Sitting
and praying to herself that all the family would be okay.
Watching another elderly couple being told of bad news. All
she could do was pray.

An hour had passed with no news, when finally a doctor made

his way to Gwen. You are A family member i take it, making
sure. Yes i am Laura`s mother, she has two children Luke and
Jenny, and her husband Geoffrey. How aare they? looking
concerned.
Well Laura and Luke have a collapsed lung, so we have put
them in an induced coma. Jenny has no injuries or her dad but
are still unconscious. They will be with us for a while. May i see
my daughter. You can for a few minutes.
Following the doctor to Laura`s room i broke down, seeing her
helpless with tubes coming out of everywhere was
heartbreaking. It is an induced coma, it will i must emphasize
that, she will have chance to heal, nodding the tears flowing
wiping my nose, i understand.
Sitting for a while with my daughter holding her hand, praying.
Walking out of Laura`s hospital room i asked the nurse who
was looking after Laura`s care, would it be possible to see my
grandchildren. Smiling, follow me. The nurse took me to the
children`s ward where Jenny lay asleep. Looking at her little
face and hands so helpless, the tears would not stop, the nurse
stayed by. How, how is little Luke, the nurse stretched out her
hand, please, following i was led towards the intensive care
unit.
The little boy lay asleep, bowing my head in sorrow, it is not as
bad as it looks, the induced coma will help him recover. As i
watched this tiny child through the window of the intensive
care my heart was broken. What about his dad? would you
really like to see him, you have had a long day. He is okay?
looking concerned at the nurse.
Lets go to the mens ward, there Laura`s husband my son in
law lay unconscious. Turning slowly making my way to a seat
in the corridor, slumping, feeling very drained. A few minutes

had passed as i gathered myself together, making my way to

my car, i drove to the nearest hotel in town, which had not
been hit by the weather conditions, it did seem the town had
been missed.
Parking the car in the hotel car park i made my way to the
reception desk, ringing the bell, a middle aged woman
appeared, her features soft, smiling she asked if she could help.
Have you got an empty room, sure how long do you plan to
stay? asking smiling with such a pleasent manner.
Do not know yet, my daughter and family are in the hospital,
oh so sorry to hear that, what happened? they were in the
basement when the house was hit by an earthquake. On the
outskirts of town? the receptionist said, yes Gwen replied. I
heard terrible, surprised we are okay, just felt a tremor.
Looking at Gwen and taking her hand, softly the receptionist
spoke, i am sure they will be alright. If there is anything i can
do, thank you said Gwen.
Once in her room Gwen collapsed on the bed, completely
drained by the days events. At 65 things were taking there toll.
Dozing into a light sleep. 45 minutes later Gwen awoke to a
knock at the door. Opening, the receptionist stood smiling,
dinner will be served in 10 minutes. Thank you Gwen gratefully
told the receptionist. The room alright? fine Gwen replied, i
will be down shortly.
Sitting at the dining room table, Gwen was not sure if she felt
hungry, her stomach had turned so much with all the upset. A
waiter approached her with the menu and wine list, Ordering a
halve bottle of white sauvignon, she needed a drink. The food
was pleasent well cooked and served well. Gwen enjoying her
meal better than she thought she would.

A middle aged couple approached my table, we have heard

what has happened, please if there is anything at all we can do,

do not hesitate to ask. Thank you for your kindness, i will keep
that in mind. Smiling the couple said it must be hard for you.
Yes do not know how i have coped so far. You have done
wonderfully the couple spoke softly, we are here if you need us,
if only for a shoulder to cry on. Gwen smiled thanking the
couple.
Getting up from her table, feeling weary and drained, she made
her way back to her room, she had no clothes, so sleeping in
her slip, tomorrow would have to buy a few things to tide her
over, whilst she stayed. How long would that be, would it take
weeks for her daughter to recover, not knowing, as darkness
fell Gwen entered into a deep sleep.
Chapter 5

Gwen`s early morning call at 7am awoke her, to her surprise

she had slept well. Showering and dressing, Gwen made her
way down to breakfast, the couple who she had met on her
arrival bid Gwen good morning. How did you sleep? very well
thanks for asking, i must have been exhausted. Shall yoube
seeing your daughter at the hospital? looking concerned, yes
but first i shall be going into town, need to buy a few things for
a change of clothing. I did not expect to be staying in town.

Well we shall let you have your breakfast, see you later maybe,
yes, and thank you for your concern. Gwen ordered a pot of tea
and enjoyed her breakfast, she did not realise how hungry she
was, must be all the turmoil. Grabbing her handbag and
making her way to the car, she went into town and bought
some items of clothing and bathroom products, such as
toothpaste, deodorant. Her stay maybe longer than she
thought.

Making her way to the hospital, wondering how the family

were, and hoping that one of them maybe had awoke. Oh
Laura please be alright, talking to herself quietly. Gwen arrived

at the hospital, going to reception to say who she was, the

orderly told her to go ahead and see her daughter.
Approaching Laura`s room Gwen`s heart raced, trembling
with anticipation and fear at watch she might find. Arriving at
Laura`s door slowly opening, the machine breathing for her,
Laura remained comatosed, slowly making her way to her
daughter`s bedside, Gwen sat down bedside Laura.
Speaking softly to her daughter, rambling on a little hoping
Laura would here her mother. The nurse came into the room to
check on the patient, the nurse told Gwen that Laura had a
good night and her vital signs were good. Things do seem to be
good, Gwen nodded, do you think she can hear me nurse? yes
we do, keep on talking to your daughter, the nurse smiled and
left the room.
Gwen sat by Laura`s bedside for almost half an hour before
slowly making her way along the corridor to the men`s ward.
Reaching the double doors, Gwen heaved a heavy sigh, please
let him be alright god, Gwen prayed quietly to herself. Entering
the ward and looking to where Geoffrey lay, to her amazement
he was awake.
Walking down the isle of beds which seemed a long row ,
standing by Geoffrey, gwen spoke in a soft voice hi, Geoff, he
looked up, Gwen smiling, Geoff held out his hand, thank god
you are here, so nice to see someone i know. Have you heard
anything about the kids and Laura? looking anxiously at Gwen.
No one will tell me anything.
Gwen pulled up the chair and sat beside the bed, Laura and
Luke have been put into an induced coma, one of there lungs
has collapsed. Geoffrey put his hands to his face in horror, oh
my god, apparently the doctor told me it is to allow the lung to
recover. I have to been to see Laura and she has not awoken
yet.

Gwen how were we found? i found you, as soon as i heard

about the earthquake i came immediately, when i saw the
house had gone, gone Geoffrey said puzzled, yes the
earthquake has destroyed your home, go on Gwen, Geoffrey`s
face glued to Gwen. Well i searched for you and got the
rescuers to help, i thought i would be recovering bodies
Geoffrey.

I spotted the basement window and saw a child`s leg it was

horrible, Gwen shook her head, fighting back the tears.
Geoffrey put his hand on hers, it is alright now, the rest is
history the rescuers and paramedics got you out. Gwen i will
never be able to repay you. You don`t have to.
The kids, Geoffrey spoke with worry in his voice, clutching
Gwen`s hand, i do not know yet, i only arrived and hour ago
myself. The doctor approached Geoffrey, looking at his notes
he said how pleased that Geoffrey was making such a good
recovery, please i want to see my kids, Geoffrey pleaded, yes
you may do so, wait one moment, the doctor made his way to
one of the nurses, in a few moments the nurse reappeared with
a wheelchair beside Geoffrey`s bed. I will take you to see your
children.
Geoffrey slowly sat up putting his legs onto the floor and slid
into the wheelchair with the aid of the nurse, wheeling
Geoffrey to the intensive care unit, Gwen following. Arriving to
where Luke lay still comatosed, watching through the window,
the nurse told Geoffrey to wait, i will find out how your little
boy is. Luke lay so still looking so helpless, his little face and
hands, Geoffrey`s eyes filled with tears, the nurse approached
them both. Your little boy has had a good night, his vital signs
are looking better.

Geoffrey put his face in his hand, Jenny how`s Jenny, Geoffrey
said, worry in his voice. Come on i will take you to see her the

nurse said. Arriving at the children`s ward Jenny slept, has she
awoken yet, looking at the nurse in anticipation. The matron
on the children`s ward came over to Gwen and Geoffrey, Jenny
has had a quiet night and slept, we noticed movement in her
hands which is a good sign, onlt time will tell. Geoffrey and
Gwen stayed for a few minutes at Jenny`s bedside, Geoffrey
held his little girls hand rubbing gently, please get well.
The nurse approached Geoffrey, time to go back to your ward,
you still need to rest. Arriving back at his bed and tucked up,
Gwen asked Geoffrey, would you like me to get you anything,
yes please Gwen, have you a paper and pen, pulling out her
note book and pencil, Geoffrey made his list, and maybe some
tihngs for Laura and the kids, of course Gwen smiled. I will be
back later Geoffrey, okay Gwen, and thank you, now what are
mum in laws and grans for she smiled.
Geoffrey watched Gwen walk down the ward and disappear,
closing his eyes he slept. Gwen made her way back to her car,
picking up all the items on the list in town that Geoffrey had
asked for. Making her way back to the hotel for lunch. The
receptionist smiled as Gwen approached the desk asking for
her key to her room.
How are things my dear, the receptionist asked, Gwen replied,
well Geoffrey my son in law has woken up and we went to see
the kids, but there is no change with my daughter and
grandchildren. They are stable, smiling the receptionist, said,
things are looking a little better then. Gwen replied yes.
Picking up her key she made her way back to her room, got a
change of clothing, putting the shopping for Geoffrey to one
side and made her way to lunch.
Lunch finished Gwen made it back to her room and lay down,
falling asleep, two hours had passed when she awoke. Feeling
refreshed, splashing her face Gwen went down to the bar,

oredering a martini, sitting quietly in the corner sipping her

drink, the middle aged couple spotted her sitting alone, they
beckoned her to come over. Picking up her drink Gwen sat by
the couple. How are the family? looking concerned at Gwen,
explaining they were all still unconscious except for Geoffrey
but stable.
it must be exhausting for you the older man said, by the way
call me Harry and this is Beryl, i`m Gwen, pleased to meet you.
It is tiring, but relieved i found my daughter and family, when i
heard about the earthquake on the news, that is when i made
my way to see if they were alright. A good job you did check on
them, harry replied else it does not bear thinking about at what
may have happened.
Gwen shook her head, Are you going back to the hospital later,
no i may leave it till tomorrow. Finishing her martini, Gwen
stood up, it has been nice chatting to you, and to you, see you
again ,Beryl looked at Gwen, with that Gwen waived and
retired to her room, exhausted and drained, resting till
tomorrow.
Morning came, sunny as Gwen looked out of her hotel room,
thinking to herself, and wondering what news would she find
at the hospital. After breakfast, Gwen drove to the hospital to
see her daughter and family. Walking that long corridor to
Laura`s room where she lay, what would Gwen find, Geoffrey
was sitting by Laura`s bedside, smiling he looked at Gwen,
Laura is off the ventilator, Gwen looking at Geoffrey, oh what
good news, has she woken yet? no not yet but i am keeping my
fingers crossed. I have brought all the things you asked for,
thanks.
How are the kids, Jenny is awake and has had a little to drink
and eat. Brilliant Gwen beamed, i`ll go and see her now,
Geoffrey smilng said to Gwen she will be glad to see you take

the toys along with you, i will. Gwen proceeded and made her
way to the children`s ward, little Jenny sat up in bed, holding a
teddy, a nurse had given her from the playroom.

Gwen made her way to where Jenny lay, gran the little girl
beamed, giving Jenny a hug oh so good to see you, how do you
feel, a lot better, oh gran it was horrible in the basement, i
almost died. Gwen sat on the bed alongside her gran daughter
and put her arm around Jenny, look what i have got you, out of
the bright coloured bad Gwen pulled out a doll, dressed in a
bright dress. Thank you gran Jenny smiled and gave the doll a
hug.

Where is Luke gran? Jenny asked, he is in another room, gran

is going to see how he is. Jenny lay down with her doll i love
you the little girl spoke to the doll as if it were alive.
Giving Jenny a kiss on the forehead i will see you later, Gwen
proceeded to see Luke, walking up to the nurse, Gwen asked
how the little boy was doing, the nurse answered, we have
taken him off the ventilator, he should wake up in afew hours.
Smiling the nurse said, the signs are good. Gwen was allowed
by his bedside and she took the little boys hand. So tiny and
small, Gwen was not allowed to leave toys in intensive care so
the car she had bought would have to wait.
Kissing Luke on the cheek, Gwen proceeded back to her
daughter`s bedside. Geoffrey had returned to his bed, Laura
lay still. Kissing Laura on the cheek whispering i will be back
later, Gwen made her way back to the hotel smiling.
Geoffrey sitting by his daughter laughing, look what gran
bought me Jenny smiled, it is lovely her dad replied, how are
you feeling? as he pushed her hair smoothly away from her
face, a lot better , she turned away onto one side cuddling the
doll, closing her eyes. Geoffrey proceeded to Luke`s bedside off
the ventilator and beginning to wake.

Luke`s eyes opened slowly, Geoffrey sat at his bedside, Luke,

the little boy looked at his dad, where am i? in hospital son,
where`s mum?, she is here too. Mum is still poorly, the doctor
came over, please could you step outside for a moment while
we examine Luke.
Geoffrey`s heart felt lighter as he waited in the corridor, things
were looking better. Down in the basement he thought they
would never be found alive, have it had not been for Gwen.
The doctor came out of intensive care, walking over to
Geoffrey, it is goodnews, we are moving Luke onto the ward,
Geoffrey smiled, thank you doctor, you can go and see your son
now. Geoffrey walked up to to the bed and sat on the edge, how
are you feeling, i am hungry the little boy smiled, Geoffrey
laughed, his Luke was back and on the mend.
back at the hotel Gwen smiled to herself as she walked into the
lobby, the receptionist came upto her, Gwen asked for her
room key, and how are your family today? the receptionist
looking at Gwen concerned, a lot better, Jenny my grand
daughter is awake, oh how wonderful the middle woman
replied clasping her hands behind the reception desk, it is
Gwen smiled and my daughter has been taken off the
ventilator, oh the receptionist smiled, good news then as she
raised her eyebrows, it is Gwen replied picking up her keys and
making her way to her room, feeling not quite as exhausted as
she has done.
Back at the hospital, Laura slowly opened her eyes, where am
i ? a nurse leaned over and spoke softly, you are in hospital.
Gathering her thoughts, Laura started to remember, the nurse
fetched the doctor. Examing Laura, well your vital signs are
good. How did i get here, you were found after the earthquake,
the nurse said, Laura beginning to remember, oh yes i remeber
now, the kids my husband, the nurse holding her arm softly

spoke in a soft voice saying they are in the hospital, and

recovering well.

Your husband has been to see you today he is on the mens

ward and your mother, she is the one that discovered you all in
the basement, if it had not been for her well. And with that the
nurse left the room. Laura gathering her thoughts together,
still feeling drowsy.

That afternoon Gwen made it back to the hospital, she beamed

at the door when seeing Laura sitting awake in bed, holding
out her arms Gwen gave her daughter a hug, how are you
feeling? Laura replying a lot better thanks mum. Have you
seen the children, i have been to see Jenny, she is awake, i
hope you don`t mind but i bought her a doll, fine mum, Jenny
is good, Geoffrey is up and about, he has been here. With that
Geoffrey appeared at the door, Geoff Laura, they hugged each
other, Luke is awake, Geoffrey said looking at both Gwen and
Laura.
Wonderful Gwen said smiling Jenny appeared at the door with
a nurse, mummy, the little girl jumped up on the bed, Geoffrey
gave the good news that he was to be discharged tomorrow
along with Jenny. Oh what lovely news, Laura giving Jenny a
hug smiling, relief overcame Gwen. Will you come back to the
hotel Gwen said, yes book a room would you Gwen, of course.
Gwen arose, i will go and see Luke, he is on the childrens ward
now.
Gwen left the room and made her way to the childrens ward,
Luke was sitting up in bed, as she approached the lad Gwen
spoke how are you, he beamed gran, she gave Luke a big hug,
look at what i have bought you, pulling out the big shiny car,
oh thank you gran. As he played Gwen sat and watched smiling
feeling happier than of late.

Where is mum? Luke asked quizzically, where is mum? she is

here in the hospital, you will be able to see her soon, smiling
the little boy continued to play with his car, kissing Luke Gwen
arose, i will be back tomorrow.

Gwen`s heart felt lighter as she left the hospital, back at the
hotel Gwen proceeded to book a room for her son in law and
grand daughter, the following day felt a lot lighter on the
shoulders. Picking up Geoffrey and Jenny from the hospital,
they first went to see Laura before leaving, and were told that
Luke and Laura were well enough to leave in a couple of days,
soon the whole family would be reunited.

Beryl and Harry met Gwen and her family in the hotel foyer,
they approached smiling, we are so happy for you Gwen, glad
to see your family have recovered, thank you for all your
support Gwen said smiling to the couple, our pleasure.
the next couple of days the whole family were reunited, Gwen
told them that they could all stay with her, till the house got
sorted. Saying farewell to the the hotel staff, Gwen drove the
family back to her house. You are welcome for as long as you
like.
chapter 6
Events had took there toll on Gwen, she felt tired, but who
would not at the age of 60, it was nice to be back in her own
bed. Having the family stay made the house alive again.
I am off to see the solicitor, Geoffrey said, have to find out
where we stand. He was told home contents were only covered,
the house was not covered by natural disasters and everything
was lost.
Telling the family this news felt heartbreaking, your welcome
here as long as you like, Gwen said smiling, i will not throw you
out. I do feel tired today as Gwen put her hand to her head, see

you later i am going to take a nap, okay mum, Laura replied,

watching her go up the stairs. Well Geoffrey better get the kids
settled into the new school, yes better had, normality should be
resumed as soon as possible, smiling at his wife.

Laura enrolled the kids in there new school, and there she left
the two of them as getting back into routine would be better for
the children. Geoffrey proceeded to go to work, water was back
on and normal work routine also began.

Arriving back at the house, Laura ran up the stairs, knocking

on her mother`s door quietly, mum, opening the door she saw
her mother asleep on the bed, mum softly she said, taking
Gwen`s hand it was cold, jumping back with shock, dropping
her hand, mum Laura looked concerned. Ran downstairs
picked up Gwens phonebook diary and phoned the doctor.
The doctor arrived in a matter of minutes, examing Gwen,
coming out of the room, looking at Laura, i am sorry your
mother is dead, passed away in her sleep. Laura burst into
tears, is there someone who can be with you, i`ll get in touch
with my husband, Laura sobbed uncontrollaby.
Phoning her husband she told him what had happened, i will
come home immediately, telling his boss, your entitled to a
weeks compassionate leave his boss said sympathetically, give
my condolences to Laura, thank you i will Geoffrey replied .
Laura phoned the undertakers and took care of the funeral
arrangements. Oh mum she said to herself.
The funeral was a quiet affair and tea and sandwiches were
offered back at the house, a handful appeared. Laura still
reeling from her mother`s death, it seemed iconic she survived
and yet Gwen passes away. Without her she would not be alive.
A few days went by, and the will was to be read, Laura had
been left the house, as she was the only sibling. Laura`s family

would make a new life for themselves, the area was good as
there had never been evidence of an earthquake or tornado,
Geoffrey shall we have a holiday, it would be a good idea. Once
booked the family packed the car locked the house and took a
well earned break, a start to a new beginning.
THE END.
