WHAT...?

WHY...?

HOW...?

Ancient cultures

Air pollution has always accompanied civilizations. Pollution

started from prehistoric times when man created the first
fires.

What are the main causes of

pollution?

Some of the main causes of pollution include industrial

emissions, poor disposal of wastes, mining,
deforestation, use of fossil fuels and agricultural
activities. Pollution can affect the air, the land and water
bodies throughout the world.

Types of pollution

Air pollution
Water pollution
Land pollution
Noise pollution

CAUSES OF AIR
POLLUTION

Schematic drawing, causes and effects of air pollution: (1)

greenhouse effect, (2) particulate contamination, (3) increased UV
radiation, (4) acid rain, (5) increased ground level ozone
concentration, (6) increased levels of nitrogen oxides

Greenhouse Effect
The Greenhouse effect is the rise in the temperature of the
Earths atmosphere due to certain gases like, methane,
water vapour, nitrous oxide and carbon dioxide, which trap
the energy and heat from the sun. Without these gasses,
the heat would escape reducing the temperature of the
atmosphere. These gases are commonly known as
Greenhouse gases, because they help to maintain the
Earths average temperature. Simply put, it is a natural
process which make the Earths atmosphere just right for
life forms to flourish.

Acid Rain Damage

"Acid rain" means the deposition of

acidic components such as sulphur
dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides, that
is, sulphuric acid (H2SO4),
ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3) and nitric
acid (HNO3) in rain, snow, fog, dew, or
dry particles.
Acid rain was first reported in
Manchester, England way back in 1852.

NOISE POLLUTION

WATER POLLUTION

WATER POLLUTION

Water pollution is the contamination of

water bodies.This form of environmental
degradation occurs when pollutants are
directly or indirectly discharged into water
bodies without adequate treatment to
remove harmfull compounts.

Causes of water pollution

Organic ,inorganic and
macroscopic contaminants.

CONCLUTION

Pollution Agents
We refer to pollution agents as the chemicals which are
released into the environment as part of the waste products
generated from production and consumption activities.
In other words, pollution agents are the "operators" which
make pollution "happen".
They are also known as environmental pollutants,
air pollutants and so on. Some of them are carbon dioxide,
sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides.

It is the responsibility of everyone to

protect our environment. Let us fulfill
our responsibilities in environmental
protection , creating a quality
ecological environment and sharing
wonderful green living together.
