 INTERNATIONAL
MALARIA COLLOQUIUM
To mark the 60th anniversary of the National Malaria
Programme of Thailand and the 50th anniversary of the Faculty of
Medicine, Mahidol University, IMC 2010 presents the past, present, and
future of malaria elimination and control challenges, hopes, and solutions.
While we recognize the undeniable successes in malaria control in
the last few decades, we also acknowledge the complexity and challenges
of todays malaria situation. The theme for IMC 2010 is therefore
Malaria: New Hopes and New Challenges.
Cutting-edge scientific discoveries including novel
antimalarial under development, transmission-blocking vaccines,
and modified mosquitoes will be presented alongside issues regarding
disease control policies, population and human resistance to malaria
elimination and control measures, and communities self-determination
in selecting elimination and control measures.
The Colloquium addresses the issues at national, regional
and global levels. These issues include, for example, the very real threat
of multi-drug resistant malaria, the new problems posed by P. vivax
and simian malarias and the potential value of strengthening links
among countries in Asia, Africa and the Americas.
IMC 2010 is organized as an integral part of the Joint
International Tropical Medicine Meeting 2010 (JITMM 2010), but
has its own opening session on December 1st, 2010 at 15:30. The
Keynote Session addresses the past, present and future of malaria
control. International authorities on malaria eradication/control
efforts in the past are invited to share their experience and views,
with those leading current global malaria control strategies today.
In order to pay tribute to our distinguished predecessors, we will present
a multimedia review of major accomplishments of the National Malaria
Programme of Thailand over the last six decade.

Institute for Medical Sciences, Bangkok (AFRIMS); the Faculty of Agriculture,
Tropical Kasetsart University; the Faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University
(FTM); the Institute for Tropical Medicine (ITM), Belgium; The Malaria
Consortium Asia (MC); Management Sciences for Health (MSH), Boston
USA; World Health Organization (WHO): Southeast Asia and Western
Pacific Regions, and the Mekong Malaria Programme; and the Malaria
Branch, CDC, USA.
Professor Yongyuth Yuthavong, former Minister of Science
and Technology and a malaria research scientist on antimalarials, is Chairman
of the Scientific Committee. Support comes from international partners,
such as USAID; the Malaria Consortium, UK; and national institutions
including Thailands Government Pharmaceutical Organization (GPO),
the Thailand International Development Cooperation Agency (TICA) and
private partners such as Standard Diagnostics, Inc.
