An Art-Historical Study of an Illuminated Manuscript with the Collection of

Guillaume de Machauts Complete Works (BnF, ms. fr. 1584)

http://machaut.exeter.ac.uk/?q=node/2171

This is the first comprehensive art-historical study of Machaut MS A (BnF, ms. fr. 1584)
since Franois Avrils article from a 1977 colloquium. It is an expansive, unabridged
version of my publication in the first hard-copy, forthcoming volume of Machauts
poetry.
I discuss authorial presence, a breakdown of artists hands, dating, production,
patronage, and more. Take advantage of the numerous, high-quality color details from
the manuscript.
This study is part of a growing and evolving website which will eventually include
editions and translations of all Guillaume de Machauts poetry and music. It is userfriendly, especially for those interested in (and daunted by!) the music.
A series of commentaries on individual iconographic programs for each poem and
some musical genres will follow.
