How to combine two excel les with same elds but

dierent data (dierent years)

Hello Everyone,

I am new to Tableau, I have 5 dierent excel les(2007.xls, 2008.xls.. 2011.xls) with same
elds(lm name, genre,budget, rating, protability) but with data from dierent year(2007
to 2011). Can someone tell me how can I combine the lm name, genre and protability so
that I can see the visualization of 2007 to 2011 in a singe chart ?

I am using Tableau 8.3 Desktop

I know this the Interview Question .

Data Appending from another Data source is the Solution for this.

Below are the XL sheets, where having data for 3 Countries in 3 Sheets.

1) All 3 Sheets are located in single XL Workbook.

2) Connect XL workbook (Sheet 1) to Tableau.
3) Then Extract the Data.

4) Connect to the Same XL workbook Sheet 2.

5) Dene the Relationship Between DB1 & DB2. Then Right click rst DB Extract, click
on "Append data from data source". Then refresh Extract

6) Now we are having data fro 3 Countries (Which are located in 3 XL sheets in 1 Workbook.)

This is not a interview question but thanks for letting me know. I will keep it in mind
while preparing for interview

I am trying to learn tableau with the Hollywood data set (2007 to 2011)

Hi Laxman,

I followed your steps but can't achieve the data appending

Step 1 :

I loaded 2007 sheet and

I tried to visualize the Lead studio vs Foreign gross

When I click extract data. It asked me to save. But I dont see the Extract option which
you are doing here. Its not enabled for me.

Can you tell me how do I achieve this

some times extract won't appear on the pc.
Attach sample packaged workbook, i will look into that.

Hi Laxman,

Please nd the data (both csv and excel format , the hollywood_project.xls has
everything combined in a single excel workbook as sheets)

As per my analysis, All XL Workbooks are having not similar sequence of Columns list.

We have Two columns with same name "Budget".

Check it once more. & Revert beck to this post.

That was the raw data. I attached the proper xls le(removed the duplicate elds) .

Hi,

Still you have to rene t he Database, The XL sheet shared is not having the same
Columns sequentially.

I did some modications & Performed Appending data like my rst post.

Note: If you refresh Extract, Primary data loose the data which was added from

others data sources.

Data is populating like "Major Studio" in some sheets, in other sheets "Lead
Studio"

Note: Columns Sequence & Names should be same Whenever we are adding data
from multiple databases by using "Data Appending" option. (Like while
implementing the Union in the SQL)
